About the operator

- melindac730 contributionsMount Vernon with TomMount Vernon with Tom as our guide was a memory that will stay with me as one of my most excellent travel experiences. Tom picked us up at our hotel, drove us to Mount Vernon with great conversation and information on the way. Tom studies to be sure to deliver on the subject he is hired to guide and makes your time together very interesting. He loves his job, takes his job as guide very seriously, and is very accommodating. Tom's tour starts at the original carriage gate for the property and includes the house and all the additional buildings needed to run such a large, busy home and house the workers who kept the home ready for its many visitors. Tom had historical facts and stories about each and every building and area included in the property known as Mount Vernon. When we returned to Washington DC, Tom took us to the destination of our choice and gave us directions so that at the end of our day visiting museums we could return to our hotel. Tom's openness and knowledge of Mount Vernon, Washington DC, and history of the area made our time with him a highlight of our trip.Written October 16, 2024
- AllanR8150 contributionsThe best tour guide in DC, PERIOD!Tom is the very best! We escorted a Vietnam Veteran friend of ours on a private "Honor Flight" with the specific purpose of leaving his combat boots at the Vietnam Memorial Wall. Tom's in-depth knowledge of the memorials that we visited was beyond impressive. Arlington Memorial Cemetary, USMC Memorial, WWII Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, MLK Memorial, Supreme Court building, Capitol Hill, White House, Blaire House, etc. We saw a lot in a short period of time. We will be going back to DC to see other points of interest that we were not able to get to and we will definitely retain the services of Tom with DC Military Tours. He is the very VERY best!Written October 1, 2024
- Fisher19350 contributionsGreat guide for all his tours.Tom is so knowledgeable about the entire DC metro area and all areas of history with emphasis on military history. He was very flexible during our tour to accommodate our needs. We crossed paths with Tom when we were on other tours and he was friendly and answered our question about that site. Thank you Tom!Written September 27, 2024
- 255leonm0 contributionsExcellent private tours in Washington DCWe spent 4 days touring with Tom from DC Military Tours in August of 2024. Tom was fantastic with great knowledge and has been guiding over10 years. We spent time on Capital Hill, Arlington National Cemetery, Monticello, Udvar Hazy Air and Space, Ford's Theater, Mt. Vernon, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, and National Cathedral. He picked us up on time at our hotel and supplied plenty of water. He also recommended a great Italian restaurant in Alexandria. He had a clear easy to understand voice that projects well. Would highly recommend Tom to greatly enhance your visit to DC.Written August 18, 2024
- MickKathy0 contributionsUnforgettable Tours of ArlingtonThe past two years, Aril 2023 and 2024, I have taken a grandson to DC during spring break and both times we employed Tom for our tours. He is so personable and knowledgeable and easily communicates with both adults and teens. On our most recent tour, my grandson said that if his history teacher was half as interesting he would have aced history, and our grandson from the first tour in 2023 was so impressed he talked about it for weeks afterwards and, perhaps because of Tom's own Navy service, chose to enlist into the Navy straight out of high school. Tom takes care of his clients, placing us in the perfect position to see the changing of the guard. His knowledge of Arlington and his reverence for the fallen soldiers leaves you with a renewed sense of patriotism and respect for this great country of ours. My wife Kathy and I highly recommend Tom for all your DC tour interests.Written August 6, 2024
- paulrE9842XJ0 contributionsFriends tour of 2nd ManassasTom has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Civil War Battlefields. He met us at the Visitor Center and took us on foot and in his spacious vehicle all over the battlefield. He described the action in detail and made us think about the tactics and strategy employed by the various commanders. He paid close attention to our well-being - it was a rather hot day! - and provided cold water and an excellent bag-lunch. I strongly recommend DC Military Tour!Written August 1, 2024
- beevcat0 contributionsBest in DC private toursThomas was a private guide for us whilst we visited Washington DC for the first time. I cannot recommend him enough. He listened to what we wanted and created an educational, informative and enjoyable night tour, which is what we wanted to do.Written July 28, 2024
- robbl9440 contributionsWonderful ExperienceWe spent most of three days having Tom guide us around the Capitol. He was most accommodating and very knowledgeable about all of the sites. He recommended several that were terrific. We saw the war memorials, Washington, Lincoln & MLK Memorials, Capitol, National Archives, Library of Congress, Arlington Cemetery, and spent a day at Gettysburg. I would highly recommend Tom to make your trip to the nation’s capitol informative and meaningful. Five Stars.Written May 11, 2024
- DmL11160 contributionsLook no further and BOOK IT!I can not say enough about Tom and the experience we had at Arlington. His personable nature and knowledge is beyond compare. It was like being with a family friend from start to finish! Tom was so accommodating to all of us (clean, comfortable beautiful vehicle, curbside pick up at drop off at locations of our choosing, sunscreen, cold water on hand just to name a few). He even went out of his was to to make my son wish come true to see Stumby the Cherry tree of all things! Tom and our tour was truly top notch and well worth it! We learned so much more with Tom than could have been done on our own accord. I highly recommend D C Military tours! It is something you will not regret. We will be using Tom in the future when we return to the area. If ease of travel, knowledge, comfort, true professionalism and a worthwhile memorable experience is what you are looking for.. stop searching! You found it! Thank you Tom!!!Written May 4, 2024

- kortk9960 contributionsHighlight of our tripThe John Wilkes Booth Tour with Tom was indescribable. He gave us the feel that we were right there with Booth making the escape. Words of description could not paint the incredible day Tom gave us. Mother nature was against us with rain but Tom's narration made the day sunny and dry as he went above and beyond giving detailed information with insights that no book or books could have told us. If your looking for a tour beyond tours, check out DC Military Tours with Tom. From the comfort of his transportation to the one-on-one service. You will not be disappointed.Written October 29, 2023
- alanandcecilia0 contributionsA Gettysburg tour second to noneTom was absolutely superb and one of the best tour guides (if not the best) we have ever had. He took the time to get to know us and our interests. He then tailored a day that was both memorable and enjoyable. My son, named after Joshua Chamberlain, in particular was raving about both Tom and the tour afterwards. Tom really engaged with him and got him more interested in the American Civil War. That is incredibly impressive and something not even some teachers can do! We really enjoyed his company and had the best time ever. Highly highly recommend!Written August 26, 2023

- Gail S0 contributionsExtraordinary Tour! Our family’s in-depth tour of Arlington with veteran Tom Schultz of DC Military Tours was extraordinary!! Tom is down to earth and mellow and made the tour fun and fascinating for all 3 generations of our family. We greatly appreciated the depth of his knowledge regarding little known aspects of history and the way he illuminated the complexities and ironies of Arlington’s history.Written July 4, 2023

Tom, our tour guide, was the best part of our Old Town Alexandria tour and truly brought its history to life. Our visiting family greatly enjoyed his fun approach, good cheer, and deep knowledge of this historic town. Our night consisted of a well-timed walkabout, interesting for all ages, banks, architecture, an apothecary museum, the most historic cobblestone street, 3 taverns, the Carlyle home (where we lucked on to a bagpipe practice), and stellar restaurant suggestion/s. We have been on quite a few tours collectively, but none came close to our DC Military Tour and Tom's amazing ability to go deeper, engage everyone, and to field any question or request from our group.

Fantastic tour with very knowledgeable guide, not just about Alexandria, but the entire DC area and general American history. Loved how truly dog friendly this tour was. Several indoor stops welcomed dogs. A highlight of our visit. Highly recommended!

Francie, I’m so glad that the two of you finally took a proper history tour of Old Town on your periodic stay. And yes, this is one of the few tours available that’s 100% pooch-friendly. Hopefully, you were able to take advantage afterwards of some discovered indoor venues with your pup. Tom

Tom is very knowledgeable on the history and personality of Alexandria. Wonderful day walking around the sites in sold Towne. Plenty of opportunities to ask questions and delve into various topics of interest. Tom spent lots of time and we departed as he continued towards home and we towards a delightful lunch!

The tour was pleasant, but grossly overpriced, and light on information. Probably would have worked for a larger group with no familiarity with Old Town Alexandria. Time and money would be better spent on a guide book, and in person tours of local properties or one of several specialty walking tours offered by Manumission Tour Company.

My excitement for touring Bull Run battlefield, especially for Second Bull Run, was only matched by Tom's excitement wanting to teach my family, friend and myself. He drove us all over the battlefield, answered all of our questions, showed us what and where the significant events were and what the soldiers would have faced. He discussed the strategy of both sides and the impact of such strategies. We just could not have had a more educational, involved and rewarding experience! I hope to have Tom as a tour guide in the future on another battlefield.

Johnson, Ed, Paul, and Ryan,
Thank you for joining me on a discovery at Second Bull Run (Manassas) Battlefield. I'm glad we had such a fine, warm day as it gave us perspective of the experiences of soldiers of both sides. I learned some Civil War facts from each of you as well. Your group was well read and prepared for the day. Thank you and yes, let's discover more Northern Virginia battlefields together in the future. - Tom

This 2 hour tour was fantastic. Tom, our tour guide, was an excellent teacher and communicator of the great history of Alexandria as we walked the old town streets. He incorporated both history of the George Washington colonial era and the civil war era of Alexandria. The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Shop was very interesting as he explained what medical care was like during colonial times. Also fascinating was the farmers market that is still going on today since colonial times. Tom was excellent in helping us to understand what life was like back then and elucidated on specific questions we had regarding history.
After the tour he gave us great recommendations for restaurants to visit. I know that DC Military Tours does other tours, and if we return to Washington, DC again we will certainly reach out to them for other tours.
