        Batu Caves
Stop: 90 minutes - Admission excluded
Batu Caves is a limestone hill, which has a series of caves and cave temples, located in Gombak district, 13 kilometres (8 miles) north of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It takes its name from the Sungai Batu or Batu River, which flows past the hill. Batu Caves is also the name of the nearby village. Batu Caves is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is the focal point of Hindu festival of Thaipusam in Malaysia. It is also known as the 10th Caves or Hill for Lord Muruga as it is one of the ten most important shrines in India and Malaysia. The Lord Murugan statue at the foot of Batu Caves is the second tallest Hindu deity statue in the world with a heroic height of 42.7 metres (140 ft.). The limestone forming Batu Caves is said to be around 400 million years old. Some of the cave entrances were used as shelters by the aboriginal Temuan / Besisi people (a tribe of Orang Asli). As early as 1860, Chinese settlers began excavating guano for fertilising their vegetable patches. However, they became famous only after the limestone hills were recorded by colonial authorities including Daly and Syers as well as American Naturalist, William Hornaday in 1878. Batu Caves was promoted as a place of worship by K. Thamboosamy Pillai, an Indian trader. He was inspired by the ‘vel’-shaped entrance of the main cave and was inspired to dedicate a temple to Lord Muruga within the caves. In temples dedicated to Lord Murugan, Vel, a divine javelin (spear), is an object of worship. The history of Batu Caves started in 1891 when Mr. K. Thamboosamy Pillai, who also founded the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Dhevasthanam, Kuala Lumpur, sent his very close associates, Sri Thiruvengadam Pillai and Sri Kanthapa Thevar to survey for an ideal and suitable place of worship for Lord Sri Murugan. It was in that year, that the influential descendant of Indian immigrants from Tamil Nadu, India, Mr. K. Thamboosamy Pillai installed the ‘murti’ or consecrated idol of Sri Subramaniar Swamy (Lord Murugan) in the 400-ft. high Temple Cave. From 1892 onwards, the Thaipusam festival in the Tamil month of Thai (which falls in late January/early February) has been celebrated there as the annual festival of Batu Caves. Wooden steps up to the Temple Cave were built in 1920 and have since been replaced by 272 concrete steps. Rising almost 100 m above the ground, the Batu Caves temple complex consists of three main caves and a few smaller ones. The biggest, referred to as Cathedral Cave or Temple Cave, has a 100 m-high ceiling and features ornate Hindu shrines. To reach it, visitors must climb a precipitous flight of 272 steps. At the base of the hill are two more cave temples, Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave, both of which are full of Hindu statues and paintings. This complex was renovated and established as the Cave Villa in 2008. The story of Lord Murugan’s victory over the demon Soorapadam is narrated by many of the shrines. An audio tour is available to visitors. To the utmost left, as one faces the steep wall of the hill, stands the Ramayana Cave. The Ramayana Cave depicts the story of Rama in a chronicle manner along the irregular walls of the cave. On the way to the Ramayana Cave, there is a 50-foot (15 m) tall statue of Hanuman and a temple dedicated to Hanuman, the noble monkey devotee and aide of Lord Rama. The declaration ceremony of the temple was held in November 2001.

Frstrating experience with Tripadvisor and tour operator
Though my VISA account had been charged and the booking showed, that everything is ok, the tour service had not been provided to us, because there had been no tickets for Petronas Towers available had time of booking the tour. We are still waiting, that the price for tour will be refunded to our VISA account.

        Inimpressed with airline
Travelled on Finnair from Singapore to Helsinki (14hrs) and return also in March and not impressed with the airline - Cabin crew looked unhappy (no smiles) and service was sadly lacking, inflight screens and entertainment kept freezing, food terrible. First time I have flown with them and the last also !!!

        Saturday adventure
It was an interesting and hot trip. Take a moment to enjoy a cruise and to wonder on the territory of the beautiful mosques.

Shouldn’t promise if you can’t deliver
We booked this tour primarily because it offered tickets to the Petrona Twin Towers. About 3 hours before the tour we were sent a notice that they didn’t have tickets and offered a substitute. This was not acceptable!

        Great for solo traveler
It was a very personable tour. The driver spoke pretty good English and it felt like a friend of the family was giving the tour.

        We recommend this tour
Our trip to Putrajaya was good. It was booked through TripAdvisor. We didn’t have a tour guide but we did have Arie, a driver who spoke some English. His Malaysian Perodua was comfortable enough. He was on time, friendly and helpful. He could understand our wishes and he was flexible and followed them. We went to each of the tour stops that we wanted to. There was an orchid festival on Putrajaya and so we were unable to go to the Putrajaya Seafood Restaurant for lunch as we had planned. Arie took us to an outdoor area with food stalls for lunch called Selera Laman Perdana and it was just fine. For RM 7 we had chicken and meat satay with a delicious peanut sauce, a cucumber salad and sticky rice. Then we had a dessert recommended by the table next to ours. We spent US$74 for the tour and we were happy.

        Absolutely dismal and appalling!
I booked a half day morning city tour of KL with this company as I was only in KL for a short time and only had a morning available. 9am the driver was at the hotel to collect me, great! We drover straight to Petronas Towers to purchase a ticket. Great. Next stop was 5 different city attractions. I was told we were going to a temple, I saw one of the attractions was a mosque so I assumed we were going there. How wrong I was! We drive, and drive and drive further and further until I ask again where we are going to be told Batu Caves! By this time we are in standstill traffic! This tour didn’t include Batu Caves! I knew to do the caves it would be a full day tour. That is why I chose not to do it. The driver went as far as to tell me we drove all the way there for a ‘quick photo’ as there was no parking and had to be quick! What? As it’s now an hour into a 3 hour tour, I insist that instead of the quick photo at the caves which should be experienced over a longer duration, we drive back into the city! The driver had no knowledge it was a half day tour or where any of the stops were to be and instead just did whatever they wanted. I had the driver drop me off at the Central Markets as this was close to many of the tour supposed attractions and that I would do the tour on foot as I didn’t have time any longer to be in KL traffic in a car as they had wasted half the morning! Sent a request for a refund to this company and was advised that there was no refund as I ended the tour - of course I ended it! I refused to continue it! I had no time to continue it with 1 1/2 hours already spent in the car driving to Batu Caves!!! They also said the driver was still in KL and would finish the tour! How generous! I’m currently in a car on the way to the airport writing this! No I won’t be taking up the offer of the tour being finished! I only had enough time for it in the morning and they destroyed that! My warning to anyone booking anything with this tour company is to book it using your credit card! That way if you end up in a similar situation, you can do as I will be, lodging it with your bank for a refund! Let them deal with the bank and prove they provided the tour booked!

Total disappointment Ipoh Day Trip from KL
To start off, the driver changed the start time from 7:30 to 8 without giving us any reason. He was a subcontracted driver apparently who knew next to nothing about the itinerary and the destinations. He spent most of the trip there on the phone to the other driver getting instructions and as well as making personal calls. He drove erratically and often speeding at over 140km/h. The car itself was clearly lacking any suspension which meant that we were constantly bouncing uncomfortably. While at Kellie’s Castle, we told him that we would only be a few minutes taking photos but when we returned, he and his car were missing. We anxiously waited for more than 1/2 hour in the hot sun thinking that we had been abandoned there and that we had to find our own way back. It turned out he and his friend had left the area to have lunch. No lunch considered for us. When we finally got to Ipoh which by then was 4pm (we still had no lunch even though we requested to have lunch earlier), he couldn’t even show us a decent restaurant but asked us to find one ourselves. He couldn’t tell us where we could get the famous Ipoh chicken rice and white coffee either. Neither could we find one ourselves! Hot, hungry and frustrated we ended up having a small meal in an old restaurant. We were looking forward to seeing the old and new iPoh (as advertised) which he wasn’t able to show us! The trip back was worse than the trip up there as we feared for our lives as the driver began to snore while driving erratically! We had to constantly making sure that he didn’t drop off to sleep again! When it began to rain quite heavily he didn’t turn on the windscreen wipers at all! We counted ourselves lucky to have managed to get back to our hotel in one piece! Instead of booking this trip through other cheaper options we decided to go with a reputable company like yours but how wrong we were!!

Great way to see KL quickly
We wanted to go up the Petronas towers and found we had left it too late to get tickets online so we booked this tour which included the tower tickets . It worked brilliantly . The tour by car was simple but effective and the guide/driver was interactive. At each location you get dropped off to show yourself around. So nothing fancy, but did the job for us

Kuala Lumpur City Tour including Petronas Twin Towers.
Fantastic schedule, we started with a prompt pick up from hotel by James, and then straight to Petronas Twin Towers. The tour at the towers is rather tightly scheduled, that’s how the towers handle their tour, not related to the trip advisor schedule. Jane’s then greeted us after the towers and provided us with a great city tour. National Mosque of Malaysia, Merdeka Independence Square, River of Life, Guan Di (Chinese) Temple, Chinatown (Petaling Street), and at the end we asked James to drop us off at the KL Tower. James provided much information about the separate locations, and was able to answer all our questions. It was time and money well spent with a great tour guide.

AVOID- MALAYSIAN TOURS RIYAS. This guy is a scam.
AVOID THIS TOUR COMANY- "MALAYSIAN TOURS RIYAS" He drove me from my Hotel to Batu cave. He walked to the bottom of the steps with me and then literally disappeared into the crowd of people. After a few minutes I went back to where he had parked and his car was gone. It was not only terrifying for him to have left me, I was stranded as my backpack containing all my belongings (including my wallet) were in his car. When he did show up over an hour later I asked him where he had gone said that he had been there the entire time, but when we walked to his car, it was not where it was originally parked which told me that he had been lying about being at the cave the entire time. I got my backpack from his car walked away from him. He started following and literally was argumentative / threatening before a local stopped him. I contacted TripAdvisor for a refund and the Tour Operator lied to them saying the tour had been completed. Shameful!
