I set up a food tour with my family of four, wife and two kids, hoping it would provide a different and unique experience of viewing the culture of Kuala Lumpur. Our guide, Danny NG, provided just that and more. We were all very well pleased with the different food entrees, deserts, bakery and fruits that Danny guided us through. But most importantly, he did a nice job of explaining where we were going, the culture and context behind the different food items we tasted. It really gave more meaning and important to the food we tasted and the food was really good! Especially the noodles! I would highly recommend using this tour group and ask for Danny NG as your tour guide. He was wonderful. We did this tour on the last day of our stay in Malaysia and it was a nice way to end our trip through this wonderful and amazing country!

THANK YOU so much to EEZ for making our KL trip such a wonderful adventure! We experienced fascinating places like Chow Kit market and tasty local foods we likely would not have discovered on our own (such as the delicious tumeric stew and native fruits). We especially loved the Nasi Lemak restaurant and the detailed explanations about the cultural and historical significance of the sites we visited and foods we ate. A fun bonus was seeing the Chinese New Year lion dance at Petronas Twin Towers. Thank you for honoring our tour reservation despite the holiday!!

We enjoyed our “Flavors of Malaysia (Off the Beaten Track)” tour with Ezy in December 2019. We had wanted to visit the Chow Kit Market and so doing a guided tour in this area seemed like a great way to go. We’ve done other food tours in Asia (including the “Eat Drink George Town” tour also with Simply Enak), and they’ve been a great way to try lots of delicious local food and spend less time figuring out where to go, what to order, and/or dealing with language challenges.

Ezy is a wonderful guide. She knows a phenomenal amount about all the food, as well as Malaysian history past and present. I loved how she took us to so many little stalls and stands. Some food highlights: chili pork noodles, chicken rendang, fried banana, fresh iced coconut juice with slices of coconut in it, and a crepe-like taco-like thing with a sweet peanut sauce inside (more about that in a minute).

Although this is a walking tour, you cover a couple really cool neighborhoods: the Chow Kit Market area, as well as Kampung Baru. Both neighborhoods have tons of character and haven’t been reduced to endless skyscrapers and shopping malls. (We hope that they can somehow remain that way). In between the 2 neighborhoods, you walk through an area with some traditional Malay houses on stilts. I love markets, so it was so fun to walk through the expanse of Chow Kit and see everything under the sun for sale: herb tonics for a number of ailments, all kinds of street food carts and stalls, fruit and vegetables, chickens, seafood, etc. Kampung Baru has a few large streets with all kinds of food for sale. We stopped at a place that had so many kinds of chicken with delicious sauces: sambal chicken, fried chicken (coated with tons of herbs and spices), chicken rendang, etc. When we were walking after that, I saw a vendor with a cart making something that looked like a crepe that had a dollop of peanut sauce on the inside and was folded like a taco. I was curious about it, so Ezy got a couple for us. It was delicious! It’s too bad I have no idea what this dessert is called. If you see it, you must try it.

You meet the tour guide at the Chow Kit monorail station, which makes it easy.

We met Eez and immediately connected with her fun and informative narrative on the history of KL. We walked around the locality trying everyday food eaten by locals in everyday places. We certainly wouldn’t have found these on our own, and we were made welcome at each one, clearly Eez was well liked. Visiting the markets was a highlight with the added bonus of seeing & trying new fruits and veg, and then touring the meat and fish markets. These markets showed us how the Malaysians, Indians and Chinese all live, eat and work in harmony. If discovering new foods eaten by locals is your thing then don’t miss this lively, energetic and delicious tour!

'Simply Enak' really lived up to its name: Enak means delicious in Malay. I went on the tour to Chow Kit, and was really surprised how many fantastic things there were to see and eat all in the one district, and so close to central KL!

Unfortunately the other participants in the tour turned up around an hour late (this was more frustrating to the guide than it was to me!) that was one of those unfortunate things no-one can do much about. When they arrived we headed promptly to Chow Kit market, working our way through the labyrinth of stalls and stopping to eat along the way. We tried absolutely delicious chicken and beef kebabs/skewers, and a corn-and-peanut pancake that tasted far better than I've ever had corn or peanuts before.

Some of the fresh food (produce, meat) stalls had closed by the time we got there, but we did get to see a man blowtorching a buffalo hide. Unexpected but interesting. After the market, there was lots of wandering through the backstreets to various restaurants. Yummy pork noodles (Chinese) was followed by roti and curry at a Mamak (Indian), and then a stroll through more markets (tasting a few fruits along the way I'd never seen before), and finishing with one of my favourite dishes of all: Rendang! (Malaysian Curry). Wish nasi lemak, of course.

At the end of the evening I was feeling rather full, but it didn't feel like I'd eaten myself sick. It was a good amount of food, and the walking between places helped with the digestion was well as making it an enjoyable sight-seeing journey as well as food tour.

The guide was fantastic too!

We have a fascination with food touring, and have done many around the world. When we found Simply Enak on TA we were thrilled at the chance to see the culture of Malaysian food in KL. This was our first visit to Malaysia and it was a most pleasant introduction into the culture and the food.

Our guide Alex met us at Chow Kit (which is super easy to get to by monorail) and we started off through the stalls of the market. We were the only Westerners in site for the duration of the tour, we were certainly eating off the beaten track! We enjoyed all things local and interesting, and Alex rose to the challenge of finding options for me, a strict vegetarian. And trust me, I certainly didn't go hungry, quite the opposite!

We love tours that don't necessarily have set stops and set schedules to follow. Alex knew some of the places that he wanted to take us but he also stopped along the way if there was something that looked different or if we had questions about something we'd never seen before. We tasted all kinds of treats, fruits, food on sticks that we might not otherwise have tried if someone hadn't been telling us about what they all were.

We also appreciated the history and culture that Alex shared with us. We ended up having comfortable conversations about life in KL vs. feeling like we were getting a rehearsed speech from a tour guide.

Overall it was a very enjoyable experience, and one that we were quick to tell others about as we met people in various points of interest in KL!

Great experience touring the wet market of Chow Kit, sampling the delights of Malaysia cuisine and generally getting a truly local Malaysian experience. Thanks Pauline!

My family and I love to travel and trying new food is always one of the most important parts of our adventures. Arriving in Kuala Lumpur was a little disorienting at first but spending the next day with our guide Tony made KL one of our most fun and favorite places in Malaysia. As we were a family of 4 limited by the fact that we don't eat meat we hired Simply Enak for a private, family-only, vegetarian food tour and it was truly worth it! Tony was the absolute best and I know we were all sad to say goodbye to him. He is knowledgable, warm, and knows where he's going and what places to eat. We ate at a lot of very small street stalls and got to talk to the cooks and it was great to be exposed to so many different types of food that when new to a country and limited by language you might not have the opportunity to try. This was such a fun day and we ate a ton and even did a small amount of street shopping, but mostly walking, talking and eating. I would ask for Tony again in a heartbeat and I miss Malaysian food already! Don't forget to ask Tony to get you a cup of Cham -- pulled coffee with dark tea and sweetened milk - yum!

Loved our foodie tour: Flavours of Malaysia - off the beaten track. Our 2 person tour with guide Alex was fantastic - of course the food was delicious, but our local guide Alex lifted the tour to absolutely outstanding. Alex spoke about the history of malaysia through the blend of cuisine influenced by the Malay, Chinese and Indian people. He guided us around the local area of Petaling Jaya, about half an hour west of KL and started customising the tour for us when he realised it wasn't our first trip, and kept plying us with more exotic, unusual and traditional dishes that are slowly disappearing as Malaysia gets ever closer to first world status. It was so much fun and we had to stave off the last course because frankly we just couldn't eat any more. Or walk without grunting a little. And waddling just a tiny bit lol. Alex also put us on to the best places to shop in Kuala Lumpur which was pure gold for my christmas shopping list, thank you Alex! You know it's great when the retailers look surprised (and happy) to see you and there are no other westerners in sight for the whole 9 floors of shopping joy :0) I wholeheartedly recommend Simply Enak food tours with excellent guide Alex, and would definitely go again.

Just finished Simply Enak’s “Street food of Kuala Lumpur” and thought it was great. Definitely worth the money. There was a wide range of foods from different cultures and types of vendors, from a multiple generation sticky bun stall to a cutting-edge restaurant in a gentrifying Chinatown location.
