About
“When a garden is used as a place to pause for thought, that is when a Zen garden comes to life. When you contemplate a garden like this it will form a lasting impression on your heart.” — Muso Soseki, 13th c. Zen master The Japanese garden defies quick and easy understanding. As we move in awe through one of these masterpieces we can feel that there is something deeper than just the physical beauty that surrounds us. This experience is designed to go to the heart of that "something deeper". While occupying 3 temples of the Nanzen-ji Monastery, you will hear in-depth explanations and insights into the world of Japanese gardens that you would never learn about otherwise. The Japanese garden will be revealed to you as an expression of profound art. As you will undoubtly visit at least several temples and gardens while you are here, this experience will equip you with all the tools you need to help make your experience in Kyoto one that will form a lasting impression on your heart.

Andrew is the Zen master! Andrew is the only one that could put you in the Zen gardens in a virtual tour in mind and spirit that is like physically being there. His passion and knowledge is unsurpassed and is recommended for any English speaking person who desires an authentic tour by an American who knows the local culture because he lives there and he is also a fluent Japanese speaker so I would recommend this tour for any Japanese speaker. I have been on other tours standing right next to the tour guide but none of those tours comes close to what Andrew accomplishes for his audience on his virtual tour of the Gardens. I wish that every tour guide could be Andrew. His self produced unique presentation puts you there! You must book the tour. If I sound excited, well I am! I will book this same tour again because this tour is like a great movie that you need and want to watch over and over again. This is an unsolicited review. Contact Andrew.

Andrew was so great! He led a virtual tour for us during the Covid-19 pandemic, and it was really nice to be able to "travel" during lockdown. Japan is our favorite country in the world to travel and we had to cancel a trip this year due to recent events, so being able to experience this country we love during such a difficult time was amazing. We will definitely be reaching out to him when we are able to make the trip in person--he was so knowledgeable and passionate. We were with a group who was a little shy to ask questions, but Andrew gave a wealth of information in response to every question we had. We wish you the best, thanks Andrew!

Learned a great deal from Andrew's online tour "Zen Garden, Zen Mind Autumn Edition". Taking little known gardens and explaining their meanings was eye opening and very enjoyable. Andrew was very open to questions and insured we could understand and appreciate what great art the zen gardens are. Cannot wait to see Kyoto in person again and enjoy one of his tours!

My husband and I met Andrew through his online tours, which were excellent as well. Seeing the places in person, pausing for more time, and asking questions leading to side visits not on the original itinerary were priceless. He is deeply knowledgeable, but beyond that excels at human connection and communication. If you are visiting Japan, or live here like we do, no doubt spending time with Andrew will be a highlight of your time. Excellent value.

We did a personal tour of temple gardens in 2019 pre Covid (Ignore date below) with Andrew and he taught us such a lot. Really recommend this tour before you embark on any Japanese tour as it will help you understand about Japanese Gardens and culture. Subsequently did online your with Andrew which is the next best thing. Good luck to Andrew and his family n the difficult times ahead. Warm regards. Paul and Marcelle Zuckerman Cape Town South Africa

My team at work had a wonderful virtual experience with Andrew, as he takes you through the Zen Gardens with the stories you feel as though you are there in-person and really appreciate the beauty and history of the garden. You start to feel overwhelming peace and appreciation for all the work and talent that is before you. Looking forward to visiting in-person one day soon.

We toured zen gardens with Andrew and were introduced to the Zen mind twice - the first time was a year ago in Kyoto and the second time was via his virtual walk this past Saturday. Touring with Andrew was eye and mind-opening, and allowed us to experience so much more of Kyoto and the Zen gardens and temples we have visited afterward. Having the opportunity to experience it again, from a different angle, and this time with our family via his online tour, was a real treat. Both to be reminded of the beautiful things we have seen and learned in Kyoto, and of some of the Zen teachings, which are always so relevant. I've been through several online walking tours and I can say Andrew leads his tours skilfully both in-person and online. Highly recommended!

My daughter (13) and I thoroughly enjoyed the online tour. We had no idea what to expect from an online tour and we were so delighted with how Andrew presented the Zen Garden. We have never traveled to Japan but by way of this tour we felt transported to Kyoto. Andrew's storytelling was my favorite part - relating the environment and structures to the art, history and traditions was what we found helped us feel as if we were there. We highly recommend this to anyone wanting something new and fun to do in your free time! This was more than a tour.. this was an experience and i look forward to the next one!

Andrew took us on an in-person zen garden tour on our weekend from Tokyo. It was a rainy day so we were thinking of rescheduling but Andrew suggested it was an ideal time. He was right! The light rain made the gardens more beautiful! It was also very quiet. We loved sharing Andrew's passion for these gardens and his unique perspective from both a trained Japanese style garden designer and a passion for zen. His insight and stories made and amazing experience much more meaningful and made our own visits to other temples, shrines and gardens far more enjoyable as we could understand them better. I would highly recommend this tour!

Andrew was so knowledgeable and you can just feel his passion for what he does and I am so glad I got to experience that! Well needed during these times to be able to deliver that zen experience through Zoom was beyond incredible. I really felt like I was there and felt the serenity and peace the gardens have to offer. I cannot wait to see it in person soon!!
