- W5639WTjacquelinec0 contributionsLovelyLovely mix of history and food. I really enjoyed walking through a geisha district, and then touring Nishiki Market. I recommend doing this at the beginning of a Kyoto leg of a trip so you can go back and eat more of your favorites.Written February 7, 2025

- jayrizzy820 contributionsDo this! Skip the crowds!Absolutely worth it. Fushimi Inari is a very popular site, so when this tour said it would skip the crowds, I was lightly skeptical. But what a surprise! Would absolutely do it again. Nobu and Kirby as our guides made a great experience even better. They were able to give cultural context on to what we were seeing, and were just a lot of fun. I’d rate the hike myself as a moderate level, good amount of stairs in several locations, and some rocky inclines. Not difficult and will be your workout for the day.Written February 6, 2025

- Y1655SGmarissaf0 contributionsWalking tour of Nishiki marketThe walking tour through the market was awesome, so many great options in the market and our guide Yutaka was very knowledgeable, helpful, and fun! We started off just by the Kamo River which is very close to many transit options and the Gion area. We walked a short distance through some of the many side streets in Kyoto and also stopped at a Shinto Shrine while heading to the market. Along the way Yutaka asked us questions and explained the history of the area we were walking through. He also answered the many questions we had as we were walking along. Once in the market we were able to stop at many shops and Yutaka assisted with purchases, translation, and helped us to narrow down some taste preferences. We were able to try some free samples, buy big and small items and snacks, and try some other snacks very graciously on Yutaka. After browsing, shopping, and eating our way through the market we had a great lunch conveniently right at the end of the market line. I’m not usually a big Tofu eater but had a wonderful Mapo-Tofu meal set as well as an awesome Junmai Sake from their menu! Really great experience and would have been lost without Yutaka as our guide! Would definitely recommend this tour and Yutaka to lead the experience!!Written February 3, 2025

Kira was a very friendly and informative tour guide for the night in Kyoto that myself and a few other solo travelers got to eat and drink our way through a few spots in Kyoto. While the main focus of the tour is obviously the food and drink, you also do learn some cool facets and tidbits about the area and things that are well-known there.
Food (and drink!) was very plentiful: a full course meal following closely to Kyoto tradition, a small bar where we got a choice of appetizers and drinks, and then a nice relaxing and atmospheric final bar to end out the night with one last drink and snack.
While I would recommend to go as a group, going solo is not only very doable but can be a fun way to meet new people and socialize without too much stress. I really appreciated that Kira joined us in the festivities and ate and drank alongside us and was constantly holding conversations with the lot of us.

Great tour. Peco and Ayaka were fantastic guides, knowledgeable, friendly and fun. We had a delicious multi course dinner, lots of interesting drinks to choose from, then more food and drink at hidden bar full of locals and finally a cafe for dessert. It was great to try different foods and drinks with Peco and Ayaka able to explain the origin, regional differences and much more. It was lovely to spend the evening with these two vibrant Japanese women who were so keen to share their culture with us.

During a cruise stop in Hiroshima, we arrived later in the afternoon. Due to our late arrival, we decided to do the night food tour. Just an FYI, if arriving on a cruise ship, the city's center is about a 30-minute taxi ride, if not long, from the port. We met our guide, Trevor, at a designated location in the city. The tour offered an excellent view of how the locals may spend an evening socializing. We visited three different local bars that most tourists would most likely walk past and not visit. At each bar, we had an opportunity to try a local beer, or other drink of your choice, and tapas (snacks) that were unique to that bar. At each stop, we had an opportunity to talk with Trevor and find out what life is like in Japan. Being an American and having lived in Japan for a number of years, Trevor was able to give a unique prospective of what life in Japan is genuinely like. Trevor was an exceptionally knowledgeable and informative guide and made every effort to ensure it was a memorable night.

We go on food tours in every major city we visit and this was the worst one we’ve ever been on sadly.
We were very excited considering its #1 on trip advisor… but we think it has high reviews because the guides are very nice and request 5* reviews at the end so people give them to help their guide get a bonus or something.
The food was just bad and there was barely any of it?? Only 3 stops and the second restaurant the food was actually awful - 1 tiny tough beef skewer... We were shocked considering how amazing Japanese food is..
All of the restaurants we went to were completely empty, it felt like they existed just for this tour.
For $200 a person you could have a 7 course Michelin star meal in Japan, so this was honestly a huge tourist scam that we regretted immensely .
Our guide was very nice but not very knowledgeable unfortunately.
Please save your money and don’t book this.

Ok, so have been on many food tours and this was a disconnect. Photos on the site did not represent my tour or food quality. Really enjoyed our guide, but it was a struggle to get through the evening. We spent 75% of our time in one restaurant that was not very tasty and for $260 for two, was very disappointed. Poorly organized by the guide service and surly they can do better with so many restaurant options. I could not eat the food option in the second restaurant and everyone in the group seemed mystified at the options. Feedback from our group was very similar and all were experienced travelers. I selected this tour due to the reviews, but this was a total miss….sorry!

Thank you for your honest feedback. We would like to explain about this tour as below.
We take our customers to 3 spots (restaurants & bars) on this tour. Each spot is popular in the Kyoto area and you can feel the atmosphere of the local area. While individual food preferences may vary, the vast majority of our customers enjoy the culinary offerings on this tour. We rarely receive negative feedback regarding the food quality.
We serve Japanese style dishes to let the guests enjoy the food. Depending on the dishes, it may not be preferable for some guests who don't normally eat it. But most of our customers do like this unique experience. For the 1st spot, we take our guests to an authentic restaurant and you can enjoy some course menus made from fresh local Kyoto foods. the 2nd spot is more casual dining bar and you can have some bar food menus with drinks. Because some of dishes in the menu is for Japanese locals and maybe they are not so familiar to you. But you can choose your own dish depending on your food preference. At the 3rd place, you can try a nice Kyoto style dessert together with your own drinks.
If you would like to experience our local culture and local food in Kyoto, we can still highly recommend this tour to you.
Thank you.
Regards,
Magical Trip Support team

We did a private Kyoto Night Foodie tour on 12/26. While our tour guide was nice and spoke excellent English, he was not providing much info about history and culture of Kyoto and Gion district. We first went to a restaurant for Kaiseki type of dinner, then sake tasting w/ fried chicken, and lastly dessert. Food was fine but honestly for the price we paid for the tour, we could have got much better on our own. It was over all fine but we were underwhelmed.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and we sincerely apologize that your experience did not meet expectations. While we're glad you appreciated our guide’s friendliness and English skills, we deeply regret that the historical and cultural insights, as well as the overall tour, fell short of what you had hoped for. We strive to provide a well-rounded and enriching experience, and we're truly sorry that we did not fully deliver on that promise during your tour. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will certainly use it to improve our future tours. Thank you again for your input, and we hope that if you join us again in the future, we can offer you a more fulfilling experience. Sincerely, MagicalTrip

We had a great time on this tour. Our tour guide Yumi gave us a lot of local history while walking between the 3 restaurant destinations. All of the food and sake we had was incredible! Highly recommend this tour if you are going to Kyoto and love eating local food when you travel.

We had a wonderful tour with Yukari leading the way. This tour was a bit different than other food tours we have been on in the past. This one started with basically a full meal with a few stops following that. It was much more laid back and relaxed than other food tours while still giving a very authentic look into a few styles of Kyoto dining and cuisine. We would definitely recommend this to anyone whether you are new to Kyoto/Japanese food or have lots of experience and knowledge.

Yumi is a fun and informative host. On this walking food tour she took us to a multi- course formal restaurant, an izakaya and for dessert. It was great to go to some places we wouldn’t have known about and to hear about some Japanese food traditions- a really lovely evening and we thoroughly recommend Yumi as a friendly and fun tour guide.

We were looking forward to going out very much. The start time we chose was 6pm. The message they sent in advance said to get there 10 minutes early, which to me meant definitely don’t be late. We were to meet at a statue. We arrived at 6pm and joined the group there. There were no other groups. After we walked to a neighborhood and got to know others in the group, we realized we had joined the wrong tour. We contacted the organizers and it took about 30 minutes to sort out that they had left without us, and didn’t reach out to us with a message. We paid over $300 and were given no refund even after we made it clear we would not go to the 2nd of two venues. It was a frustrating and disappointing experience knowing that they had at most 10 guests and didn’t wait for 6pm or text us proactively, and a no refund policy when they didn’t have to pay for our meals or drinks. I think a partial refund would have been appropriate.

Thank you for your comment and we are sorry for your inconvenience for this tour. Although our group was waiting for you from 5:50pm at the meeting place, we assume you have joined another group accidentally on that day. If you could let us know earlier within 30 minutes after the tour started, you could probably join from the 1st restaurant of this tour. Then once we received your first message at around 7:00pm (which was 1 hour later after the tour started), we asked you whether you would like to join from the 2nd restaurant but you refused to do so. We tried to support you as much as we could do once we received your message. But in this situation, we are sorry that we can't refund to you. We hope you could understand our policy.
Thank you.

Hi do you have any availability tonight? Thanks!
Written September 24, 2019
There were vegetarian dishes available, but the selections are off a fixed menu, so it is limited. They know what the menu is, so I would send them an email and ask them specifically. I'm sure you could order off the regular menu, but it would cost more. The good thing is that the guide knows the food very well, so you may be able to try a vegetarian dish you may not know about.

Hi, thank you for reaching out. Did you book through Trip Advisor? If so, the start time should be 6pm. However, we are selling 2 slots, 6pm and 7:30pm on our own page so please contact us again if you book through our page. You'll also receive a reminder the day before your tour date so please make sure to check it.
