・Sake Tasting with an Expert You’ll get to try flavours of sake you may never have experienced before – as we’ll introduce you to bottles which have never been exported. Your expert guide will explain the differences in taste – dry, fruity, sweet – and how each of these are produced. ・Food Pairing You’ll also be served various otsumami – Japanese snacks which traditionally accompany alcohol – so you can see which types of food and flavour best accompany the different sake types. This is a fun and educational sake tasting in Kyoto. Recommended to join this experience at the beginning of your trip in Japan!

      Sake edcation at its best!
The experience was fantastic, from start to finish. Our guide, Greg, was extremely well informed and was superbly kind, funny, and witty. We learned so much at the sake brewery and had a wonderful time at the food and sake tasting. It was defintely an evening to remember. Our group was small, and we had a very personalised experience.

A must in Kyoto - do the 3 hour one.
A must if you are In Kyoto - do the 3 hour one! We loved every bit of the history, the tour of this small yet rich brewery. We had a few Japanese Sake tastings at the brewery, bought a nice Japanese Sake from the store. Then Greg, the sake guide took us to their center (walkable) which even more magical. 7-8 tasting with and without food along with so much learning and fun. Great hospitality! Pro tip: if you are new to Japanese Sake, try to do this early in your Japan travel plan so that you are better equipped while having Japanese Sake throughout your trip ahead!

      Must do tour!!’
Greg was not only personable but Extremely knowledgeable about all things Sake. It made it interesting without being to technical and explained it enough that now I can choose a Sake to go with about everything. Especially enjoyed to food pairing part . Totally changed the flavor profiles and expanded our horizons about where and how to drink and serve Sake. I just wish I could do it again, best tour Ever!!’

      Momo blew our Minds!
Momo was a great guide and our group of six was small enough to get to know everyone. Before Momo, we let the restaurant pick the sale (fun fact learned… sake is incorrect . It is actually called Nihonshu in Japanese!’), and we weren’t all happy about the choice. After Momo, we are better able to tailor our choices for individual tastes. Mind blowing!

The best 3-hours - Fun, educational, with practical knowledge that will stay with us forever.
For us, the experience started before the tour. The train ride and the walk through sleepy back streets of Fushimi set the scene after busy Tokyo and Kyoto. We were greeted by Greg at the Gekkeikan brewery. Greg was an amzing guide. Very knowledgeable and kept us amused with lots of stories during the Gekkeikan brewery and museum tour. He then led our group of four on a short walk through Fushimi to the Kyoto Insider tasting rooms where he and other Insider staff took us through a detailed tasting and food pairing experience. Greg showed us how to read sake lables and shared a presentation with us afterwards. We put this new knowledge to extensive use on the rest of our time in Japan and the experience has given us a deeper appreciation of sake and Japanese culture. We recommend this as a "must do" tour if you are in or around Kyoto.

      Great introduction to sake!
What a great introduction to sake! The experience starts at the sake museum with history of sake and sake making, and then continues with tasting. We tasted 10 different sakes. Seven of them we tasted with food pairings as well. Our guide Miyuki was very knowledgeable about all things sake and answered all our questions. Our group had people with some knowledge of sake and people trying sake for the first time. The experience is suitable for anyone really. The tour is in a part of Kyoto you won't get to otherwise, which was interesting to see and explore.

      A must-do experience
Honestly found this a life changing experience. Coming from knowing pretty much nothing about sake, I got such an exposure to it and gained a solid understanding about how it’s made and the different types. Kotaro was a phenomenal guide, who knew lots about sake, and was just so interesting to talk to. I’ll recommend this tour to everyone visiting Kyoto - it’s a must-do!

      Great Sake experience!
Greg was an AMAZING tour guide! The tour through the Gekkeikan was a blast and the sake was delicious. Then the food pairing for the second half of the tour while learning about different types of rice and their different flavor profiles and how they paired with different food was a blast! Greg was super funny and knowledgeable and was great to chat with about sake and Japan!

The best tasting experience, a must if you are in Kyoto
The perfect experience to try in Kyoto and one of the best tasting I have ever had. We booked for the full experience and Greg was our tour guide. He explained everything about the production of Sake (nihonshu), he explained how to read the labels and he we left the tasting fully satisfied (and bit tipsy as well). Now I regret we had this tasting at the end of our journey in Japan! We could have enjoy more the sake after, we will use his lessons for the next visit! Super recommended! After the tasting he also gave few good suggestions on whiskey tasting and we are also very grateful for that!

Great experience, a Must Do in Japan
Great experience, a "Must Do" in Japan. Momoko and Greg, our guides and experts in Sake, were really nice , with clear information, very accessible to all in the small group. We visited a brewery where the process of making sake was shown, by Momoko a Sake somelier with tasting each type according to the fermentation process. Then we went to a local restaurant to learn, with Greg, the food combination with tasting what was being taught. Very interesting, and informative, now I know how to select Sake and how special that is!!

We really enjoyed the sake tasting. In particular, the information you get is very interesting and practical. It is even more fun to practice your new 'sake'knowledge the next days by ordering specific types of sake in Japanese restaurants.

The only downside of the 1.5 hour tour is the price, which is a little bit pricy. However, the quality you get is also high!

I am a sommelier who have an above basic sake knowledge and my expectation for the tasting was for it to be very basic. Nevertheless I signed up because the emphasis was on Kyoto sake. My expectations were totally surpassed. Rieko has an amazing expertise and can relay it in a very charming and unpretentious manner. I am very sorry that I could not participate in her advanced tasting as it was scheduled on the date of my departure. I would definitely not miss it on my next visit to Kyoto. Thank you Rieko! I learned a lot.

This sake tasting experience surpassed our expectations. We were part of a group of twelve fellow tasters/students. Rieko, our sake sommelier talked us through the process of sake, how to read a sake bottle label, and the different types of sake with the reasons for the different tastes.
    Then came the tasting.
There were seven types of sakes. Because Rieko had taught us the reason for the individual flavours, we were able to distinguish them and decide which of the types we preferred.
    Then came the food pairing.
Rieko explained the reason why some sakes go better with some foods - but of course, that’s an individual preference, but the food pairing blew my mind: how the flavour of a sake can be altered by the food. Amazing.
We arrived not knowing anything about sake or thinking of sake as our drink of choice, but we left with true knowledge and a desire to learn and drink more.
    Highly recommended.

My wife and I tried lots of different types of sake in Japan, but this was by far the best sake experience we had. If you really want to learn about sake, how it's brewed, the different types, how to read a sake bottle and deduce the flavor, then this is the class for you.

The class (I'm referring to it as a class since it was definitely an educational experience) is incredibly well done. There's a wide variety sake samples to try and in the perfect amounts. Not too much, not too little, just the right amount to appreciate each one. Pairing each sample with food was also a great idea and brought out new dimensions/aspects to each type of sake we tried.

Our instructor, Greg, was nothing short of fantastic. His passion for and knowledge about sake was infectious and he facilitated some great conversations in our group about all the different sakes we tasted.

Whether you've been drinking it for a while or are completely new to it, I think this class has something for everyone with even a slight interest in sake!

This was an informative, very well-organized introduction to the various types of sake. We also had the opportunity to taste different types of sake with and without food. I have since ordered sake in a Japanese restaurant and felt much more confident in choosing one I really liked. I strongly recommend this class.

Our workshop leader was Mayo - she was very friendly and personable. Mayo provided a thorough overview of the history of nihonshu (sake), the production / fermentation process, and the main types (I.e. Junmai vs. Daiginjo).
The workshop also included sake tasting with paired food.

Overall, this workshop was very engaging, and I would recommend it to any beginner sake enthusiasts who are looking to improve their sake knowledge!

We visited Japan for 17 days and spent the last 6 in Kyoto. Our family is 5 ( 2 teens and we brought my dad along for the trip). I thought this would be a unique experience for the family and wow did Kana and her mom deliver! They are so sweet and welcoming, you feel like you’re in their home. The quality of the fish was excellent, there was plenty of food so make sure to go hungry. They leave you with a wonderful parting gift. Highly recommend!

My friends had a great time learning about nihonshu and how to determine our favorite type when shopping for more! Momoko-san was very informative and made the experience a lot of fun! She even took a moment after the visit to direct me to a distillery, so I can buy some traditional wooden sake cups.

I can highly recommend this event. Kotaro-San was so friendly, competent and empathetic. I used to enjoy Sake before without having any further knowledge. Kotaro-San opened a new fascinating world of Sake for me, provided information in an exciting way which I can easily keep in mind and use lot when now enjoying Sake. Can’t wait to enjoy Sake with that new perspective. Kampai from Switzerland!
