Our guide Andreas was excellent and had a great knowledge of the region. We all really enjoyed this tour but be warned its a lot of walking, you will certainly hit your daily step count on this tour.
To be truthful the quality of food did not meet expectations and I would not recommend the Kobe beef... not sure if it was Kobe, as we had Kobe elsewhere and it was superb and just a little bit more cost wise. Anyway the venue was really more about the sites, sounds and feel about the place and it certainly was worth it for that.

Dear GrahamH387, Thank you for your review! Of course, we always strive for 5-star reviews, but I think your critique is fair. We will be looking into the beef quality issue right away, though I would like to say that generally people have been quite happy with it. Please note that "Kobe Beef" is a brand, and more of a marketing device than a product of the city per se. In fact, I don't think there are even any cows in Kobe anymore, since it's evolved into such a big city :) What is referred to as "Kobe Beef" is from the nearby areas, and that is what we provide our guests too. As for the other food, we aim to provide an authentic Japanese pub style assortment of foods, so even from the start, the genre might have been a bit different than your expectations. At any rate, we are happy that you enjoyed the sights and guide, and that you still feel it was an overall worthwhile experience. Thanks again for the review, and thank you for choosing Pinpoint Traveler in the first place.

The tour of Gion was great. I was in Japan on business and was able to take a night to see some of the sights with my helpful guide Mardi. She has extensive knowledge of the history of Kyoto and Gion, and we explored the district on foot. She took me to some cool places and we tried food I would never have thought to order.

We had fun, good food, met some interesting locals, and took some really cool pictures. It was nice to see the usually bustling area in the evening when things were calmer.

I had such a good time and a night free in Tokyo so I reached out directly to Pinpoint directly and Kevin helped me book another great tour.

This food tour was a great introduction to Gion. The food included in the price were all delicious!!! It was a treat that our tour guide Andres was very knowledgeable of Japanese culture that made me appreciate the tour even more. He first showed us points of interest in Gion before taking us to restaurants frequented by locals so our group had a taste of real Japanese dishes. I really enjoyed this food tour and would highly recommend it.

This was just a badly planned experience. The whole tour takes you to standing up restaurants and bars, which is nonsense for tourist that had been walking the whole day.

In addition, we ordered the kobe beef upgrade and we got wagyu instead.

Do not recommend this tour.

We are sorry to hear you were tired from walking all day. There's really no way to avoid doing a lot of walking in Kyoto. However, this experience clearly states in sentence three of the overview that you will "sample regional specialties accompanied by included drinks at standing bars/restaurants." So I believe this shouldn't have been a surprise for you. Also, the total tour time is right around three hours, so I am not sure how you would have been standing for "3-4 hours." More often than not, we in fact are able to sit down at the first restaurant. Since this is not a guarantee, however, we don't write that in the tour description. It is unfortunate that on the busy day you joined us we were unable to hold the table. Tachinomi, which is what these standing restaurants are called, have many appealing aspects to them, and they are a genuine Japanese experience. Tachinomi, by their very nature, encourage socialization, both within our groups and with the Japanese customers around us. Tachinomi also are geared towards lots of small plates. This allows our guests to try upwards of 15 different dishes on the average tour. Quality, interesting dishes, if we may say so ourselves. With regards to the beef, Kobe Beef is a type of wagyu, and there was absolutely no deception involved here. For those that add the beef option (and there is no need to - you get *plenty* of food even without it), you will see it written as "Kobe area beef." Everyone knows Kobe Beef, but in fact Kobe Beef is just a very well marketed one of many types of equally high calibre Japanese beef ("wagyu"). The type served by us is sometimes Kobe Beef and sometimes Omi Beef. Those in the know are well aware that Omi Beef is amazing, and Omi is much closer to Kyoto than Kobe. Regardless, both Omi and Kobe are considered to be in the same Kansai area. Thus the "Kobe area beef" moniker. We always value input from our guests, but we have to admit that this review of yours does not provide us with any particularly actionable points. The standing part is clearly mentioned before purchase, and the beef is loved by most guests and is very much so wagyu. It is our sincere wish your future food tours be more satisfying. We stand by our night tour as being non-mainstream, intelligently designed and executed by adroit guides, and chock full of good info, sights, and tasty food.

I absolutely recommend this tour! My guide Mardi is clearly very sharp and knowledgeable about the history and culture of Japan. It was really great to have a guide who is truly fluent in English to answer my numerous questions. I really enjoyed eating like a local and seeing an authentic side of Kyoto. I booked the tour as a solo traveler, but never felt awkward or out of my element. I had a great time and felt right at home.

I loved the tour I could ask all the questions I’ve been shy to ask about Japan so far. The guide, Mardi had very good knowledge of Japanese culture and history and knew Kyoto very well. She easily adjusted the tour style to fit what I was looking for and recommended some nice sake and sweets to take home. The conversation felt natural as well and I genuinely had a great time which is very important as a solo traveler and worth all the money. I definitely both tried foods and drinks I’d have never ordered and also walked to places I wouldn’t know to visit. Highly recommend the tour and Mardi.
The food was genuinely amazing

Travelling with a teenager can be challenging. Something needs to catch attention long enough for me not to hear the dreaded "I'm bored." Lately, food tours have been my cure. And this tour, which starts with a walk around the sights of Old Kyoto, stories of history and culture, before proceeding to Gion for more walks, stories and eating at 2 great places (the first one was even non-smoking) to sample varieties of food, was a great way to spend an evening in Kyoto. Mardi was a knowledgeable and caring host. She made sure we were all comfortable and had a taste of all the food. I highly recommend this tour!

Normally food tours are just that..you walk around and eat some food and have some drinks and socialize and experience the night life. Not with Mardi's tour in Kyoto and Kevin's tour in Osaka..Both of them outdid themselves. Not only did I have a unique and enjoyable food/drinking experience at every restaurant stop, but they were personable and educated me greatly on the history of Kyoto and Osaka.

If you want a tour that has everything ..Kevin's crew dot's all the I'S AND crosses all the 'T'S"

Thanks again Kevin and Mardi!!!

Hi Discover07181512585, So happy that you chose to take both our Osaka AND Kyoto night tours! They are different just as the cities themselves are quite different from each other, with their own highlights and idiosyncrasies. And not only did you take both tours, but you also took the time to rave about us here. That means the world to us! To say the we "outdid" ourselves.. well, now we're just blushing *^^* Thank you again, and may your future travels also be fun and fulfilling.

Sometimes it all goes wrong and this was such an occasion. The first hour was a stunningly dull walk through a local park (at night??) and an equally drab part of suburban Kyoto, arriving at our first stop, a standing only bar, where we appeared to be totally unexpected. After 10 awkward minutes the 5 of us on the tour plus guide Niko were ushered to a counter where we were served a drink and an assortment of bar snacks, notable only for their for minimal quality and quantity. The Kobe beef option appeared at this location, some stewy, overcooked pieces of meat lacking flavour and texture. And then another 15 minute route march to the next stop on our tour, where not only were we unexpected but unwelcome. The restaurant was full and we were turned away. A flummoxed Niko had no plan B and no idea of what to do. He suggested another standing bar, a 15 minute walk away, where we might be able to get something to eat. No thanks, enough was enough so I left the group and wandered off into the night, hungry and hugely deflated. Sadly, the gormless Niko was totally out of his depth as a tour guide, lacking knowledge, interest and initiative. To be blunt, the tour was a rip-off which promised so very much and delivered so very little. To be avoided.

Hi Jon, We appreciate reviews, both positive and negative. Our almost uniformly positive reviews for this tour, I believe, speak to its quality, at least as most people experience it. Still, with regards to your review, I feel obligated to point a number of things out. 1. You left the tour midway through it, so I am not so sure you have the proper understanding to even write a review. The tour is a story, and you didn't follow it to the end. 2. You got a full refund (a courtesy we extended to you due to your negative experience), so I doubt it was a "rip-off," considering you paid nothing. 3. The tour clearly state that we go to standing bars, so I am not sure why you complain about this. We often get to sit down, but sometimes not. 4. The tour walks through the Gion district, Ponto-cho, and other, very famous entertainment districts. We go nowhere near the "suburbs," as you refer to them. I humbly posit that you are not familiar with what suburbs in Japan look like. Just because you are on a street without hordes of people, that does not place you in the 'burbs. It places you in atmospheric backstreets, allowing us to explain interesting points about the area. 5. We do not stew beef, or otherwise make it stewy. Some people like it rare, some like it cooked more. It's hard to make everyone happy, but most do enjoy the beef option if they buy it (which there is absolutely no need to in first place -- we provide plenty of food without it). Further, this being a foreign culture, how people prepare beef may be different than how you would back home. 6. The restaurant did keep you all waiting for a few minutes, which is regrettable and something I do apologize for (as your guide also did). You visited during Golden Week, which is a period of absolute crowd madness in Kyoto. We tried our best, and so did the restaurant, but once in awhile, things don't go according to plan. As to us being unwelcome at that restaurant, well, that's completely untrue. Do you speak enough Japanese to know what conversation transpired between our guide and the manager? 7. People love our food. It is substantial, varied, and of high quality. You didn't even come to the second restaurant, so your assertion about the food is particularly questionable. 8. Our guide is not "gormless," nor is he the other unsavory adjectives you have conjured, but I don't think it necessary to get into all that. Though your flowery prose does make for a fun literary adventure no doubt, the truth is that we are a small company that takes people into deeper local scenes, streets, and restaurants. We do not loudspeaker about big groups or take them into formulaic food halls where buckets of fried chicken are churned out. We provide honest experiences. Again, we did give you a full refund, so there's not much else left to say or do. May your future travels be brighter!

Just got home after this trip and wanted to say what a fantastic time we had. Mardi our tour guide was brilliant. She was very informative and had a great sense of humour. We were a couple and another solo lady joined us. We were all included and it was a great three hours. The food was fantastic and she took us to places we would never go ourselves. We upgraded to the beef option and it was really really nice and good to try. Great wander around Kyoto. Would be good to do as you arrived to really give you a flavour of the town

Dear Passenger325616, Mardi and I thank you for coming, and also for following up with such a kind review. Small groups, a fun and right-sized informative intro into the area's past and present, and good food across a couple local restaurants: This is our formula, and I'm happy it cast a pleasant spell on you :) Thanks again, and we do hope to see you again someday.
