A good way to see and feel some of the history of Kyoto
Our guide Andreas was excellent and had a great knowledge of the region. We all really enjoyed this tour but be warned its a lot of walking, you will certainly hit your daily step count on this tour.
To be truthful the quality of food did not meet expectations and I would not recommend the Kobe beef... not sure if it was Kobe, as we had Kobe elsewhere and it was superb and just a little bit more cost wise. Anyway the venue was really more about the sites, sounds and feel about the place and it certainly was worth it for that.

Dear GrahamH387, Thank you for your review! Of course, we always strive for 5-star reviews, but I think your critique is fair. We will be looking into the beef quality issue right away, though I would like to say that generally people have been quite happy with it. Please note that "Kobe Beef" is a brand, and more of a marketing device than a product of the city per se. In fact, I don't think there are even any cows in Kobe anymore, since it's evolved into such a big city :) What is referred to as "Kobe Beef" is from the nearby areas, and that is what we provide our guests too. As for the other food, we aim to provide an authentic Japanese pub style assortment of foods, so even from the start, the genre might have been a bit different than your expectations. At any rate, we are happy that you enjoyed the sights and guide, and that you still feel it was an overall worthwhile experience. Thanks again for the review, and thank you for choosing Pinpoint Traveler in the first place.

Great walking tour of Gion area of Kyoto
Dec 2019
We had a great time with Mardi during our short stay in Kyoto as we explored the streets of Gion and learned about the area's rich culture. Mardi has a lot of knowledge of the unique culture in Japan and as an ex-pat she really filled us in on how things work in Japan (particularly for a foreigner). I would say the food part of the tour was not bad but it was not a focal point; the tour was more about history and exploring certain parts of the city.

Hi Depo810369, Thank you for the super positive review of Mardi and our tour in general. We do try and get to that sweet spot between informative and info-overload, all the while trying to keep it fun and interesting. Glad Mardi did that for you :) The food part being "not bad" isn't exactly a win for us (lol), but we appreciate your honestly, and Mardi and I will discuss what foods have been most popular on our tours. Happy travels!

Very accommodating!!!
Dec 2019 • Family
Mardi was wonderful! It was just the four of us, a private tour! We were very jet lagged but Mardi really adjusted the tour for us. After some great history and walking the shrine and Gion, we went to eat some authentic Kyoto food, some very unusual! Mardi could tell we were dragging so suggested we change the next stop to Ramen- we could not have been happier! I highly recommend this tour- so interesting!

Less out of the ordinary food than expected
Martin was a decent guide and we learned a few interesting facts about Gion, which we had it heard before.
There was constant light rain which hampered the walking and probably limited the guide in what he pointed out, but that’s the luck of the draw.
The disappointing aspect was that we expected more little snacks from specialist small shops or street vendors, as we walked, but we only had 1 and the rest of the food was in 2 small bar. These were ok, although the ‘book shop’ bar was standing , so we ate the food standing. After 2.5 hours walking, that was a poor choice!
Had much better food tours in other cities, but the guides knowledge was good, especially as he was German and only in Kyoto for 18 months.

Dear PJEColchester, We appreciate you taking the time to review our Kyoto Night Tour. There seems to have been a bit of a misunderstanding on your end, as we clearly state early on in the description what kind of eating, and at what kind of places you are going to be doing it. To characterize the restaurants we go to as simply "bars" is misleading - at best. They are full on restaurants, with full on kitchens, making food to order. At one of them, you were seated at a table, and at the other one, you were provided food and drink while standing at a typical counter-service type restaurant ("tachinomi" in Japanese). A full meal was provided across these two spots, alongside two drinks. In Japan, eating while walking around or in front of food shops is considered to be of poor character. That is why, outside of festivals and very touristy, inauthentic foreigner-oriented snack ghettos, it does not exist. Our tour does not represent itself as a grazing about food stalls kind of thing. The one snack we give you is just a bonus (we don't even talk about it as an inclusion in our marketing materials) just to tide you over during the initial walk around the Gion and Yasaka Jinja areas. We think Martin is a great guide. When you're as into Japan as he is, 18 months in more than enough to have greater knowledge than most Japanese people.

Interesting places and food
Nov 2019 • Couples
Darkness adds to the intrigue as you move from one place to the next through a variety of streets and alleys, stopping along the way for history and contrast to present Kyoto. Andre, our graduate student guide, was well versed in the area. The group is limited to six, a welcome change from the large group tours. We enjoyed local places and foods, with plenty of options and of drinks. Have a sense of adventure and be willing to try something new and local.

Mardi is an excellent Host
Sep 2019
My friends and I had a wonderful evening with Mardi on the Gion and beyond tour. Mardi is an excellent host and has an amazing grasp of the history and important nuances about Kyoto. She took us to some amazing local bars which we would never have visited on our own; and her selection of eats was spot on. she catered to all the do's and don'ts of our group which were quite varied and despite the constraints the food was delicious.

Great food, great guide
Nov 2019 • Solo
Marty was great, this was billed as a foodie tour, however we began the night with a walk through Gion which she was very knowledgeable on. We learned a lot about the area and got some great snaps along the way. We then visited a few hidden a gems where we enjoyed some great food, sake and sweets before finishing the night with some Kobe beef (this carried an additional charge and was paid in advance) at a cute standing bookshop restaurant-this was a fantastic tour, would def recommend!

Night tour with Mardi
Sep 2019 • Solo
This was my first night tour at Japan. I had a great time listening to the very detailed explanation our guide Mardi gave us. We went to different local bars and she was there all the time speaking in a perfect Japanese with the waitress and the owner of the pub. Also she was very kind . Great choice for a closer approach to Japanese night culture.

Perfect Evening Excursion
Kyoto has a lot to offer. But if you’re stuck at a week-long conference, it’s difficult to find time to explore. For someone with a tight schedule, this tour offered a great opportunity to sample the Gion district. We visited the iconic Yasaka Shrine, tasted popular Kyoto desserts, visited two marvelous Izakayas, and strolled through the district’s neon-lit streets and hidden alleyways. All while our guide Mardi entertained us with insights into the history and traditions of this storied area. This was an evening well-spent.
