    Best food tour with Thomas
Booked this tour back in November with Thomas, and we had such an amazing time! Thomas was brilliant and gave a very thoughtful and really fun trip! He clearly knew all the ins and outs of Kyoto, and balanced being smart with being super personable. The dinner is amazing it’s like omakase but with more substantive food so definitely recommend coming hungry! Really recommend the tour!

Amazing Matcha Tour with Amazing Local Guide Sanae
While planning our trip to Japan, my partner and I wanted to find a fun event where we could learn about the matcha ceremony and buy good matcha in Uji. We stumbled upon this tour and decided to sign up, not knowing what to expect. The tour was a small group of my partner, me, and our tour guide, Sanae. Before attending the matcha ceremony class, we stopped by some temples in the area and some local shops. The whole experience was elevated by the knowledge and personality of Sanae who was able to give historical context of not only that day, but also some previous days. The Matcha ceremony was also a blast. Sanae introduced us to Toby who showed us how to grind matcha and what goes into different grades of matcha. My partner and I would happily recommend this tour to anyone who will be travelling around Kyoto especially if you can get a tour with Sanae.

    Great intro to sake
We had a walking Sake tour in Kyoto which was excellent. Our guide, Thomás was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We were just a small group but it was a lot of fun and we got to see places which we wouldn’t have on our own. Highly recommended

Tasty, interesting and informative tour of Uji
This was a lovely tour of the town of Uji, given by Tomas and Dani. It blended food tastings with the history of Uji (and Japan), along with a visit to the oldest original Shinto shrine in Japan and an ancient Buddhist temple. Our food samplings started after our shrine visit with a lunch of matcha soba (thin noodles with a very pleasant, mild matcha taste) and tempura. After walking through the town, we stopped for a hands-on lesson in grinding matcha (note... it's a good upper arm workout), preparing the tea (note... frothing the tea is harder than it looks!) and properly enjoying the tea. And we finished the tastings with matcha ice cream that was very good. Our final visit was to the Byodo-in Temple, which is spectacular, and the adjoining museum, which has some lovely artifacts from the temple, including originals of the phoenix sculptures from the roof. We enjoyed the temple so much, in fact, that after saying goodbye to our guides at the end of the tour, we spent more time on the grounds admiring the temple and the colorful fall foliage reflected in the surrounding water. Transportation from Kyoto is on your own, but the train is very easy to take there (just be sure to arrive at the Keihan Uji station rather than the Japan Rail Uji station). I'd highly recommend this tour, and hopefully you'll get either Tomas or Dani as your guide.

    Uji Matcha & cultural tour
Sanae was a fantastic host - we were able to see so much of Uji (more than just matcha). She was incredibly knowledgeable and we enjoyed our time together - highly recommended!

    Wonderful Uji Tour
Wonderful walking tour exploring the town of Uji, its temples, a lovely lunch along the river, and ending with a tea ceremony at one of the oldest matcha/tea stores in town. Our guide, Sanae, was absolutely wonderful - very knowledgeable and a delight to chat with. Would recommend to anyone!

Russ and Mitsuki are rock stars
We had a fantastic evening with Russ and Mitsuki. The places we visited, the food, the sake and their company combined to make it one of the most enjoyable evenings of our holiday in Japan.

    Brought Kyoto alive
What a great tour, we tried food we’d never have done on our own, plus the insights on culture and history brought the city alive. Great fun and Russ was always checking in with everyone. This a must do!

Delicious and Educational Gion district tour with Kaiseki dinner
Highly recommend. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the district and the history of the places we passed on the way . I loved how we were able to stop at some of the best stops on our walking tour. We were able to see a total of 7 Maiko/Geiko on their way to work. The pièce de ré·sis·tance was the very delicious Kaiseki dinner. Every dish was very tasty.

    Delightful evening with Spencer
Spencer gave us a terrific tour of Kyoto food culture. We particularly appreciated the historical aspect--what was in vogue during different periods of Japanese history--and his ability to connect what we were eating to the culture and agriculture of that part of Japan. We also enjoyed learning about Japanese dining culture--not just the food, but the etiquette & the way it fit into Japanese life. & of course, the food itself was great and we were taken to off-the-beaten-path places that we would never have found ourselves.

Sae is a wonderful host for the evening
Sae showed us around some of the beautiful sights and food shops of Gion, telling us snippets of history and culture as we went. She is an absolutely charming young woman and kept us entertained with stories of the city and her life (growing up in a mountaintop monastery with a bass playing monk for a father, is a pretty cool backstory!) Very highly recommend an evening out with Sae in this historic and atmospheric part of Kyoto.

I cannot say enough about our tour with Sae - she was such a pleasure to be with on our tour. We received so much information about sake and the differences between gingo etc. - she provided such great insight to enhance our experience. We have done a fair amount of sake drinking but this was by far the best. Great to see a part of Kyoto where we could never have visited on our own!

Our guide Sae was wonderful — so knowledgeable and kind — and taught us so much about Sake! The tour was so fun and the lunch was delicious. My husband and I chose the tour on our honeymoon and it was definitely a highlight! We learned about Japanese customs, manners, sake, and more, and Sae was a perfect guide, adding helpful and interesting info as we strolled place to place. Definitely recommend for any trip to Kyoto!!

Me and my two friends ended up being the only people on our Sake Tour, so we unintentionally got a private tour. Sae was an amazing guide, she had so much knowledge but was also so friendly and easy to talk to! The Gekkeikan Museum was super informative, I learned so much about the brewing process that I didn't know before - we were really curious about the production process and both Sae and the museum staff were wonderful about answering our questions. Throughout the stops we sampled around 15 different kinds of sake, and Sae went above and beyond, asking us each which types we liked best and making sure we could read the labels and know the terms to ask for the kinds of sake we wanted. The tasting with a sake sommelier at the end of the tour was also a highlight. An amazing tour, 10/10 would recommend!

Thank you Sae for a wonderful introduction to the history of sake brewing in Kyoto. You were extremely informative and we thoroughly enjoyed every sip of Sake which warmed the soul! I will forever look out for the green cedar balls and head straight to that bar or restaurant.

My husband and I were led by our amazing guide, Hiroe and her assistant, Ayaka, through the neighborhood of Fushimi via back alleys and along waterways. We've been on tours about tequila, beer, wine, etc, but it was truly amazing to learn about the history and see the process that goes into making sake. There was a bit of walking involved, but nothing strenuous. We also tried several of the local spring waters around, which of course is a huge part of the flavor and creation of sake brewing. Our lunch was delicious and came with a sake flight that paired nicely with all the different aspects of our deluxe bento box. We also visited a food stall restaurant where we were able to try 18 (!!!!!) select sakes from the 20 breweries in the area along with some traditional (and delicious!) snacks and finished up at our favorite stop -- a local brewery where we were able to purchase sake that we watched them pour into a bottle straight from the tap! The tour was a great combination of tiny local places, trendy places, more manufactured places, and a palatable version of the history and sake making process. 10/10 would recommend!!

We had a really relaxed, informative and enjoyable tour with our guide, Mana. She shared with us the importance of the water used, the quality of the rice, the manufacturing process and the different tastes of the finished product. It was really interesting to see how saki was made at the museum. Our lunch was excellent and we had the opportunity to taste a range of different sakis - even saki ice cream - delicious!
Mana was really helpful answering our questions and gave us some brilliant ideas for seeing other interesting parts of Kyoto.

Had a lovely time with Russ in Kyoto!
My boyfriend and I decided to stop in Kyoto for 2 nights and really wanted to make the most of our time there. Booking a tour with a knowledgeable guide was definitely the best decision. The food was delicious, Russ was fun and informative and I ended up finding my new favorite sake. 10/10.

I was initially very excited about this tour however that changed as the tour progressed. The Fushimi area was beautiful, the museum was nice, and tasting different Sake, unfortunately that's where it ended. Our tour guide was nice but we felt she was not enthusiastic as a guide should be, nor confident in what she was explaining - she kept referring to her notes, unfinished explanations of the process, and was very vague. The whole purpose of the tour was to get a comprehensive understanding from a local Japanese guide on Sake making and its origin. We did not get this. In addition this tour promised a 7 course lunch this was definitely not the case and we waited over half an hour just to be seated for lunch which wasted a lot of time. During the tour we were told that we would visit one of the famous sake bars which we didn't even visit. For the price paid and for what we got out of it we actually could've explored this area on our own without a guide. Some of the other tours with this company may be good but this one overall was very disappointing!

Hello, thank you so much for the feedback and we are sorry that there were various misunderstandings on the tour. We are speaking with the guide to get more information. One thing I think was a mix-up, our Nishiki Market tour has a 7 course lunch but the sake tour has a lunch in a local restaurant with various dishes not a course meal. We will try to make sure this is more clear for everyone on our site. Sorry again for the confusion. Our Sake tour has been very popular but we will consider how to make sure we explain clear expectations for the stops and tastings on the tour. We take all feedback seriously and we appreciate your sharing your feedback. It is always our goal to share what we love about Japan.

My husband and I did the Kyoto Sake Brewery Tour with Akari on our last day in Kyoto and it was a highlight of our 2-week trip in Japan. We were the only ones in the group so it became a private tour.

We started at the Sake Brewery Museum and then walked through Fushimi, a neighborhood that is home to 20 local breweries, with stops for tasting and a delicious lunch.

Highlights:
-Akari is very knowledgeable, not just about sake but Japanese history and culture in general. We seized the opportunity ask her some of the questions we had from being in Japan for the past week.
-Fushimi is very residential, so we got a better sense of how locals live and where they shop. Outside of the sake museum, you're hard-pressed to find other tourists in the area, which was a welcome change after hitting up your typical tourist sites in Kyoto.
-It was informative! We now understand the variations of sake and have a deeper appreciation for it.

The tour is slightly pricey, but we found it to be well worth it. Akari is passionate about what she does and took us to hidden gems that you would only know about by living in Kyoto. It was clear we were getting an insider's view. It was one of the highlights of our trip!
