I loved this experience, and I think you will too!
Ko, our guide, was a pleasure to chat with on the small hike up to the temple. He was a fantastic photographer for us in the bamboo forest. Lastly, he was clearly knowledgeable and gave us foundational context to Kyoto, the forest, and Zen Buddhism.
The small, but steep, hike up to the Zen temple was totally worth it. Ko acted as a translator while we were guided by Osho, a Zen monk through meditation and a tea ceremony.
This tour was a highlight of our 2 weeks in Japan. Thank you Ko, and thank you Osho!

Today we visited Bamboo grove, Nonomiya shrine and the Daihikaku Senkouji temple. Our guide Fumiko was just lovely and very informative. The group was small, felt very casual and felt more like a group of friends going on an adventure. We met a monk of the temple and got to practice zen meditation and learn traditional tea ceremony. I would definitely recommend this tour to everyone!

Thank you manni_321 for your review. We are so glad to hear that you enjoy the special moments in Arashiyama. Zen meditation is one of the unique experiences you can do in Japan and the Senkoij is a very special temple hidden in the mountain. We are sure loved the view from there too. Kyoto has a lot more to offer, so hope you enjoy them as much as you can while you are here. Thanks again, Hiroko

Ko’s a cool guide. He made the experience pretty much chill but informative at the same time. The path leading to the temple is breathtaking. The quiet moment with the monk and the discussion with him, through the excellent assistance of Ko, is something that is one for the books for my husband and I. It felt so special. It was a pause from life that I felt we needed. Meditation is something that I have always wanted to learn personally, and being able to learn it from a monk just made it incredible and I am grateful for that opportunity. The tea ceremony added to the serenity and mindfulness that the experience promised to offer.

Insights from Ko, particularly the spiritual history of Japan, is very much appreciated by my husband and I as it was our first trip in Japan. We made the right decision booking this experience. The sights along the walk were as beautiful as we expected it to be. It was a day of less tourists around, so we got lucky seeing more and having a quiet walk. Our chats along the way were fun, too. We are glad to have met Ko as he did his job very well.

Thankful for this experience! :)

We had Julian as our guide and he took us through forest spirits of bamboo and zen. Julian has rich knowledge of the Japanese history and the tour surroundings and we learnt soo much more than we would had we done the route ourselves. The Tea ceremony was interesting and we were lucky to have mediated with the monk. Julian was able to translate the words of the monk which gave even more history on Japan. Dont miss out on this its a must!

Starting off with a trip through the famous bamboo grove we were introduced to the significance of the various shrines and temples we came upon as we walked.

The tour continued up to a small shrine where we got to participate in a meditation session and a traditional tea ceremony with a local monk.

We came here during the autumn season so the view was stunning even if it was quite crowded.

Our guide Ko was great fun to hang out with and was very knowledgable making this into a really fun tour.

This was a unique mix. Our guide was a young Chinese/Japanese man named "Zen" (yup) who was quite forthcoming and open in answering questions that I wouldn't have felt comfortable asking an older, more traditional Japanese person, so I got lots of insight into Japanese culture, just talking with him. As expected, the Bamboo gardens were lovely and peaceful, but there's just not a lot to say about them. The incredible highlight was a bit of a high walk to a Zen monastery where a small group of us (only 3 women) were able to chant the heart sutra, meditate and ask questions of the sole monk who lives in an isolated monastery not far from the Bamboo walk. He answered many questions that I had about Zen meditation and the traditional path to enlightenment "Zen style." It was one of the highlights of my two week trip in Japan. Worth every penny. I came back to the US inspired to restart the Zen meditation practice of my youth.

We did this tour few weeks back and have to say it was a great experience. Originally planned to do Arashiyama bamboo grove on our own but at last minute decided to join this tour. And it was totally worth it. Our guide Masayo was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of information about the sites. Visit at the temple was a highlight. Yes, you have to climb a bit (well, walk up the long flight of stairs so not much climbing per se). So take water with you. Temple itself is small and has fantastic views over the forest and Kyoto in the distance. Monk living in the temple doesn't speak much English but Masayo was a great translator. We've learnt a lot about Buddhism (you can ask as many 'stupid' questions as you want and all will get answers), did a short meditation and tea ceremony. All in very friendly and family like atmosphere. Simply must do.

In this small group tour, we went through the Bamboo Forest, Nonomiya-shrine, and met with a Zen Buddhist monk in Daihikaku-Senkoji.
the walk along the river and the climb to Daihikaku-Senkoji was so beautiful, and the time we spent there helped me learn so much about Japanese Zen Buddhism. it was an intimate talk, where we could ask anything, participate in small rituals, and really get the feeling of it all.
Nobumasa Miyake san was very knowledgeable, and led the group in a most pleasant and patient manner.
