About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- PaulMahdib0 contributionsThey looked stunning! My wife and daughter rented the kimonos and they looked stunning. My daughter got her hair done (1000¥ extra) and afterwards my wife said she had wished she had her hair done as well. We wandered around the shrines and gardens to the east of the rental shop. This isn't just a cheesy tourist thing as probably about a third of the women (and a tenth of the men) were also dressed in kimonos. Note, they moved their shop but the signage is still on the building in the old location. The old location has signage indicating they are on the 3rd floor. That is the wrong building. Head north from there about 200 meters and they are on the 5th floor with new signage. It was quite confusing and hopefully they remove the signage on the old building soon. (The instructions they send you aren't helpful since the address is in Japanese and addresses aren't obvious to my eyes.)Written November 21, 2019
- cleeyy0 contributionsToo many customers at one time hence long wait even with prior appointment setArrived on time for our appointment but felt overwhelmed and lost as customers kept pouring in and they kept serving those furisode customers (higher-end package) and we felt insignificant and adrift without much direction. We wasted a lot of time standing around and waiting for our turn and not knowing when we would be served since there's no systematic queue set up. The dressing, makeup and hairdo felt rushed hence quality is of course debatable. The kimono we picked is nice but we were so lost how to pick the right belt and staff was too busy to be interrupted for help. I wasn't even asked or shown pictures of hairstyles to pick from. Staff just decide on her own and begin tying up my hair once I sat down at the makeup area after dressing up. To be fair, she did at least asked what hair accessories I wanted. Oh, I almost forgot their bags are very limited and most was damaged and faulty. I had to settled for a damaged one. Overall, I think it's overpriced and the experience is rather stressful instead of fun and interesting as I was hoping it would be. Not blaming the staff as they are really too busy and understaffed to handle such large crowd. So they did their best to cope in the situation I guess.Written November 24, 2018
- Amber S0 contributionsNice kimono rental serviceThis kimono rental service is convinient, fast, and they have lots of choices and possibilities. Though the dressing up face could have been more personal, I understood it was very busy and they were trying to help a lot or customers at the same time. When I came back later the lady took more time talking to me and she was really nice and helpfull. The kimono experience alone was one of the most wonderfull things i've done in Japan. The kimono was comfortable and not hot though it was a very hot day. The service is close to a nice touristic area with lots of souvenir shops, food to taste for free and a very beautiful parc to shoot some nice pics.Written August 11, 2018
- Anastasia S0 contributionsValue for Money, Great ServiceThere are many kimono hires in Kyoto area, but I found this to be one of the cheaper ones. The ladies at the place were very efficient and quick with dressing and undressing us! They took their time in choosing what kimonos would suit us and could match with our spouses! Despite the language barrier they were extremely forecoming and friendly. They did speak a little bit of English, and fluent Mandarin. It is a little hard to find as it is on the 3rd floor of a back shop (you have to find the tucked in elevator) but was constantly communicating with us via FB messenger which was all good. In the end they gave us a significant discount and offered to do our make ups and hair for free (just a hair accessory rental for some of us) plus earlier deductions. I would definitely come back for this cultural experience and recommend REI to everyone! Tips: - for guys make sure you loosen your kimono a bit as the men in our group were walking like penguins the entire day - in winter make sure you wear thermals, it is still fine without but for those not used to the cold extra precaution is good - the sandals are quite painful and dont offer much support! So plan to not do a whole lot of walking in them and visit nearby shrines as they are literally just pieces of wood with cloth!Written February 14, 2018
- Cassie19110 contributionsMust do in KyotoI booked this in before I went to Japan and paid for the basic package. It was very easy to find - in the Gion area opposite the Yasaka shrine. You head to the 3rd floor to begin with, where they will take you to choose your kimono and will explain what is included for you. Then you get changed....be warned - if you're not comfortable with someone dressing you, this might not be the best activity for you. The ladies are very professional and try to do everything they can to make you comfortable. My package only included the actual clothing and shoes, however for an extra 1000 Yen, I opted to get my hair done as well. After you're done, you can go out and go sightseeing in it, as long you return it by 7pm. The whole experience was just incredible - I had no idea everything that went into wearing a kimono!! Tip - keep on eye on the whether for the day you're going to do it - we did it when it was humid (no other free days), but it meant that we didn't stay in them for as long as we would've liked.Written November 19, 2017
- oreaband0 contributionsPhoto taking with online bookingWent there 30mins early for parents to take photo. Had made reservation thru online booking and made payment. There is one english speaking staff. When my mother start to choose the kimono, she chose items that are not in the paid plan. We are fine with extra charges. After the kimono and hairdo is done, we are needed to make payment. The staff calculated everything inside. I reminded her that I had made the payment and only need to pay for extras. The staff quickly apologize. Everything is perfect and the staff are very professional.Written March 16, 2017

I am a traveler from China and this was a very bad experience. In the case that the price is more expensive than other similar stores, we still chose this store with the purpose of trusting our compatriots in our country and making it more convenient. But from the beginning to the end, the Chinese shopkeepers, shop assistants, and especially the photographers who took pictures were very impatient, not serious, and unfriendly to us. There was no clerk to help when choosing a kimono, and no one helped to change the clothes for a long time after the selection. My girlfriend's hairstyle did not have a clerk to help communicate with the Japanese hair stylist, and the hairstyle was completely different from the reference photo. . And since I'm a boy, the shop owner has been urging my hair stylist not to be so serious, just to do it casually. Very enthusiastic when receiving money. And the photographer was not serious about shooting, the process of taking pictures was very hasty, and the shooting equipment was very ordinary, not as good as my own. We don't show us the original photos and don't guide the actions. The refined picture after shooting is even more disaster. It took a few days just to do some minor microdermabrasion and add a very ugly filter, even the color of the clothes was distorted. It makes people question his professionalism. After making a modification suggestion, nothing was changed for five days, which made people very angry. In the end, he was asked to return the fee for repairing the pictures. He only refunded a few dollars for each picture. This fee is indeed in line with his strength, and the kimono shop did not help us in this matter from the beginning to the end. something happened. Warmly remind Chinese compatriots and friends from other countries not to come to this store.

One of our favorite experiences in all of Japan was this! We had tough time finding the place via directions on Uber (taxi) app, but after being dropped off a few blocks away, we found it. Right away they greeted us, and very calmly instructed us what to do. My wife and two daughters got dolled up, and I was pretty quick. I did not wear the wooden shoes, instead opting for my cool NoBulls. One daughter wore what they offered us. Then we were off sightseeing and fitting right in. Everyone was cool to us, and one of my fav Dad/husband moments was seeing the girls all standing under a tree in their kimonos hiding from the healthy sun. I highly recommend this experience!

The service was fast, efficient and they had a lot of variety for me. Our hair was done well and accessories very pretty. We were a little late for our appointment but they were happy to let us still come for the rest of it.
The whole process was however a little rushed and the place quite messy. Personal belonging bags were sprawled across the floor, shoes heaped in a pile by the lift entrance. There was many options for my daughter (6), granted we had gone later on in the day. She did manage to find something sue looked lovely in.

Add this experience when visiting The Cup Of Noodles museum. This is a, “Must experience,” and doable in 2 hours. All of The kimonos comes already made. What we ended up doing was customizing the kimono to our size. Customizing the kimono is easily done by cutting the kimono once and hemming the parts that was cut. Most of the time was spent choosing what we wanted. You know how us women can be! So many choices to choose from!!
I booked this experience the night before and was able to get an appointment for my sister and I.
We had ended up choosing Yutaka instead of the kimono and couldn’t be more thrilled.
You should visit The Cup of Noodles museum in Yokohama; do both the exhibitions on how to make noodles and then designing your cup and personalize the flavors; explore the rest of the museum, walk down the street to The Red Brick Building for an indoor farmer market, then hop on the bus for 45 mins to Koto City for the kimono experience.
My sister and I did this and enjoyed the itinerary very much. After the kimono experience, we headed back to our hotel. It was the perfect itinerary and day spent well.
I do recommend doing the kimono experience first thing in the morning so you can enjoy wearing the kimono outfit you just made. And then head over to the Cup of Noodles museum.
Here is a summary of the process I went through so you can get an idea.
1. Directions and address to place was easy to navigate.
2. Upon arrival we were immediately greeted and was instructed to freely pick out what we wanted to try on.
- the kimonos are tagged with different colors and on the wall, there’s a sign with pricing for the colored tag.
- we got to try on everything we picked out.
3. Once we selected what we wanted, next came the measuring and fitting. That was a really quick process.
4. After fitting, we got to cut our measurements. It was basically a straight cut across the waist of the kimono 👘.
5. Sewing was done quick and efficient. Instead of the typical sewing machine or sewing by hand, we used the heat and bond method to hem our yukata.
- after hemming, we put on yukata. They even gave us an elastic band that was used to hold the bottom piece of the yukata.
6. Once this was completed, we got to choose what colored obi belt, stash, and string.
7. Next came the grand finale, taking pictures. It rained the night we book the experience so we stayed indoors to take pictures. It was still very fun. Our host had such an amazing and joyful personality that she made everything fun.
8. Last step - payment. Payment was accepted via card and yen. After payment was done, our host bagged our yukata and when asked, she very happy to show us how to properly fold our yukata. She even showed us the simplest way as well since the proper way had many steps to remember. Our host was very patient with us and even allowed us to video all the steps to properly dress ourselves in our yukata.
Overall, it was a great experience.

I can only seem to book for 9 people max, but I'm intending to come with a group of 11 students, and 2 adults. Do you take group bookings? And do you offer any student discount for a kimono, hair and make up package?
