Amazing Matcha Tour with Amazing Local Guide Sanae
While planning our trip to Japan, my partner and I wanted to find a fun event where we could learn about the matcha ceremony and buy good matcha in Uji. We stumbled upon this tour and decided to sign up, not knowing what to expect. The tour was a small group of my partner, me, and our tour guide, Sanae. Before attending the matcha ceremony class, we stopped by some temples in the area and some local shops. The whole experience was elevated by the knowledge and personality of Sanae who was able to give historical context of not only that day, but also some previous days. The Matcha ceremony was also a blast. Sanae introduced us to Toby who showed us how to grind matcha and what goes into different grades of matcha. My partner and I would happily recommend this tour to anyone who will be travelling around Kyoto especially if you can get a tour with Sanae.

    Great intro to sake
We had a walking Sake tour in Kyoto which was excellent. Our guide, Thomás was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We were just a small group but it was a lot of fun and we got to see places which we wouldn’t have on our own. Highly recommended

Tasty, interesting and informative tour of Uji
This was a lovely tour of the town of Uji, given by Tomas and Dani. It blended food tastings with the history of Uji (and Japan), along with a visit to the oldest original Shinto shrine in Japan and an ancient Buddhist temple. Our food samplings started after our shrine visit with a lunch of matcha soba (thin noodles with a very pleasant, mild matcha taste) and tempura. After walking through the town, we stopped for a hands-on lesson in grinding matcha (note... it's a good upper arm workout), preparing the tea (note... frothing the tea is harder than it looks!) and properly enjoying the tea. And we finished the tastings with matcha ice cream that was very good. Our final visit was to the Byodo-in Temple, which is spectacular, and the adjoining museum, which has some lovely artifacts from the temple, including originals of the phoenix sculptures from the roof. We enjoyed the temple so much, in fact, that after saying goodbye to our guides at the end of the tour, we spent more time on the grounds admiring the temple and the colorful fall foliage reflected in the surrounding water. Transportation from Kyoto is on your own, but the train is very easy to take there (just be sure to arrive at the Keihan Uji station rather than the Japan Rail Uji station). I'd highly recommend this tour, and hopefully you'll get either Tomas or Dani as your guide.

    Must-do tea tour
Sanae with arigato Japan was a wonderful tour guide! we saw some great sites, ate delicious food (and lots of it), and the tea of course was 11/10. Definitely will be the highlight of our time in Kyoto.

    Uji Matcha & cultural tour
Sanae was a fantastic host - we were able to see so much of Uji (more than just matcha). She was incredibly knowledgeable and we enjoyed our time together - highly recommended!

    Wonderful Uji Tour
Wonderful walking tour exploring the town of Uji, its temples, a lovely lunch along the river, and ending with a tea ceremony at one of the oldest matcha/tea stores in town. Our guide, Sanae, was absolutely wonderful - very knowledgeable and a delight to chat with. Would recommend to anyone!

    Brought Kyoto alive
What a great tour, we tried food we’d never have done on our own, plus the insights on culture and history brought the city alive. Great fun and Russ was always checking in with everyone. This a must do!

A great Sake tasting and education
I cannot say enough about our tour with Sae - she was such a pleasure to be with on our tour. We received so much information about sake and the differences between gingo etc. - she provided such great insight to enhance our experience. We have done a fair amount of sake drinking but this was by far the best. Great to see a part of Kyoto where we could never have visited on our own!

    Delightful evening with Spencer
Spencer gave us a terrific tour of Kyoto food culture. We particularly appreciated the historical aspect--what was in vogue during different periods of Japanese history--and his ability to connect what we were eating to the culture and agriculture of that part of Japan. We also enjoyed learning about Japanese dining culture--not just the food, but the etiquette & the way it fit into Japanese life. & of course, the food itself was great and we were taken to off-the-beaten-path places that we would never have found ourselves.

    Fantastic tour!!
Our guide Sae was wonderful — so knowledgeable and kind — and taught us so much about Sake! The tour was so fun and the lunch was delicious. My husband and I chose the tour on our honeymoon and it was definitely a highlight! We learned about Japanese customs, manners, sake, and more, and Sae was a perfect guide, adding helpful and interesting info as we strolled place to place. Definitely recommend for any trip to Kyoto!!

Kyoto Sake Tour - great for sake enthusiasts!
Me and my two friends ended up being the only people on our Sake Tour, so we unintentionally got a private tour. Sae was an amazing guide, she had so much knowledge but was also so friendly and easy to talk to! The Gekkeikan Museum was super informative, I learned so much about the brewing process that I didn't know before - we were really curious about the production process and both Sae and the museum staff were wonderful about answering our questions. Throughout the stops we sampled around 15 different kinds of sake, and Sae went above and beyond, asking us each which types we liked best and making sure we could read the labels and know the terms to ask for the kinds of sake we wanted. The tasting with a sake sommelier at the end of the tour was also a highlight. An amazing tour, 10/10 would recommend!

    Fantastic Local Experience in Kyoto
Our tour guide, Thomás, was fantastic and we were lucky enough to have him to ourselves for the evening for this experience. We visited 4 bars and restaurants, each of which had its own vibe. My husband, the more adventurous of the two of us, enjoyed all of the recommended foods and beverages. I, on the other hand, am not very adventurous and still had a great time. I had the best drink I have ever tasted at Bar Kingdom. The food establishment we went to was touted as rarely visited by tourists and we dined on local specialties from Kyoto. Thomás was friendly and knowledgeable about the drinks, food and the area in which we toured. A small FYI for those booking this for the future...meeting at the Kyoto Kawaramachi Garden World Clock actually means to meet where there is currently a large map of the world embedded in the wall.

    Beautiful Uji
This Uji tour was a great way to learn about all the wonderful things the area has to offer. Our guide (Mickey) was fantastic. She brought us to important historical sites and helped us understand their history and importance. She explained some of the religious customs and practices which enriched our experience when visiting the religious sites. It was so nice to have someone to organize all the food, our tea making and be able to ask questions of all the tea shop owners. I would recommend this tour of Uji; it is beautiful, quiet, calm and a different side of Kyoto.

Marie was fun, knowledgeable and engaging with our teen kids and us. We learned tons and stopped at a few sweets stores while walking thru beautiful Gion. Loved every Alley, Pontocho was great! Just a cold magical afternoon and evening. The magic was gone the moment we started the kaiseki meal at the Four Seasons Restaurant (not related to the hotel). The sashimi was chewy, the beef was sub standard, and among other things, we had to be calling the waiters to clear the dishes on the table. They seemed overwhelmed. Think Arigato is a great company and we had an outstanding experience with them in Tokyo, but they definitely need to look for a better restaurant to take clients after such an amazing tour in Gion.

Hi, I believe you booked through byfood.com and left a similar review there. We are so sorry you did not enjoy the food. We normally get great reactions to this restaurant. So glad you enjoyed our guide and information, but I think perhaps the restaurant was having an off night. Thank you for your feedback we will discuss with the restaurant.

We just spent the most amazing evening with our tour guide Sae. She spoke impeccable English (for which we were very grateful) and was so knowledgeable about the areas of Gion & Ponto, everything to do with Geisha & Maiko and about the traditional architecture, customs and food. The tour was the perfect blend of culture and food. We ended with a delicious Kaiseki meal. Sae was very informative in the right way to enjoy this exquisite meal. We can highly recommend her and Arigato Japan. Iroiro Arigato Gozaimashita, Sae. A perfect introduction to Kyoto

My wife and I spent 22 days in southeast Asia. This was one of our favorite activites. You get a lay of the land and get to try a lot of good food and drink along the way. You end the night with a traditional Kaiseki meal. This included many courses, sake, etc.. The guide was wonderful in giving us recommendations for the rest of our stay. We learned a lot about the culture and history while also throwing back some sake and having fun.

I booked a spot on the Gion Food Tour as part of a trip around Japan. This particular food tour had been recommended to me. The tour was lead by Akari who instantly made everyone feel welcome and at ease. The tour itself was fabulous; we started off exploring the old windy streets in the Geisha District (we were fortunate enough to see some real geisha scurrying around!), sampled some matcha tea & white chocolate cookies and plum jams before heading to our amazing 10 course meal at a traditional Japanese restaurant. Akari explained what each course was and also about Japanese cuisine. I had a great night, with a group of lovely people!

If you are stopping in Kyoto for dinner you have to do the 10 course Kaiseki dinner and hopefully you get Chie as your tour guide. She took us behind the scenes in Gion and we got to see a Geiko Geisha with her Maiko as well. She told us about what the scriptures on the housing were and a little insight of teahouses, caterers and boarding houses. Dinner was equally fantastic as we were served with a 10-course meal that was over the top delicious. Highly recommended and a must do in Kyoto.

I had a lovely tour with Pia in February 2020. I very much enjoyed the evening walk in the Gion district and the sit down dinner which felt very authentic and interesting. The various foods were fresh and delicious. Pia was a well informed guide and Kyoto is a lovely city.
Absolutely the only thing is that it would be great if, after the tour, you would walk the customers to the nearest major street. I didn't have a functioning phone, it was dark and didn't want to be a bother to the guide so I got lost trying to find my way back. Having said that, I got lost constantly in Japan.

Yoshiko and Yoshie were fun tour guides. They gave us a lot of history about Kyoto, in general, and the different "Flower Districts". Gion was the main district we toured. We were treated to macha sweets, ume samples, and several other items as we made our way to the restaurant - Hamacho Four Seasons.

There we sat upstairs on tatami (hole in the floor). The food was interesting, and tasty. The menu changes often so I won't provide details on the dishes we were served. Yoshiko also told us about making dashi - traditional way, and quick way. As each course arrived, Yoshiko described the dish and told us about the preparation.

I would consider going on this tour again. I am recommending it to friends who are visiting Kyoto.

We had a great time on this food tour. Our guide was excellent, the food was fun and plentiful, plus we learned a lot from our guide. We highly recommend this as an activity in Kyoto. I wish I remembered the name of the spice store we went to. I will be recommending this as a fun activity all over Japan.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Kyoto Gion tour by Arigato Food Tours. The walk around Gion and Ponto-cho was very pleasant and informative, with several stops for sweets along the way. But the highlight of this tour was being able to enjoy a kaiseki dinner at Yoshina with our guides, Hiroe and Agustin. The food was very good, served in a beautiful, private room along the river. But the best part of the tour was the conversation, and learning about Japan, Japanese culture, and Kyoto, in the company of other like-minded travelers. This was truly a unique experience, and I especially recommend this for solo travelers – it was a great way to enjoy an evening in Kyoto!
