We had the privilege of touring the Nishiki Market and indulging in a wonderful traditional Japanese lunch in Kyoto with our fabulous host, Rosalia. The tour was very well planned, paced, and executed. Rosalia gives a personal touch to the tour as a Kyoto native and taught us many things about the food and culture there. I would recommend this tour to anyone, even those with food allergies as these were accommodated well.

Sets the surrounding stage well culturally and historically. We were able to eat food that varied a lot from one another. Having guidance was great. As far as orienting ourselves with culture in Kyoto this was a great way to start. Timing was perfect-the market gets much more crowded late on in the day. Our guides were great.

We find these tours a fantastic way to orient ourselves with the unique aspects of the culture, area and food. This was a great tour. We learned quite a bit, tasted many samples - virtually anything we saw along the tour that we wanted to try. The market is fabulous. It was a true farmers market for centuries and remains a place the restaurant chefs come for special foods. But so much more! Not a tourist trap, it was lively and clearly a place for town residents.

Now the lunch. It was fabulous. Seven courses may sound daunting but it is done in the small bento-box size so not at all overwhelming. I am a tiny eater and this was not too much to comfortably handle. The foods, style and service was very much that if the Kyoto region. The tour guide explained and answered many questions.

The tour guide. Abiyan was wonderful. Handled our little group gracefully and was most informative. The tour company clearly is very good and finding guides that will work well with guests.

We did this tour this morning with our guide Rinrin and we couldn't recommend it more! Rinrin was knowledgeable, experienced, pleasant, lovely and hilarious! The tour was delicious, informative and most of all- a lot of fun. Really a great way to get to know Kyoto's cuisine, plus lunch was AMAZING!
Very highly recommended!!

I went on this tour with Jennifer as our guide. She knew the vendors and answered all questions when I random pointed to something to say "what is that"

The market tour is about 40 minutes, stopping at a few vendors to try small food samples. I do wish some of the sweets were incorporated into the market tour.

The 7 courses tofu lunch was definitely the highlight. I never had tofu and have been adverse to trying it back home, but this was divine. Jennifer explained the thought process that goes into preparing food, how to eat a Japanese meal, and the history of Kyoto and food.

I can't recommend this tour enough. You get to try some market food you may have walked by and you get to eat some of the best tofu in the world.

Though I've staying in Kyoto for couple of months, I found this gastronomical tour really refreshing and educational! Personally I would highly recommend it to tourists who loves food and would like to learn more about Kyoto's culture without any language barrier.
Despite the morning hiccup, it was quickly fixed with the team sending an email to notify us, would be great if it's via call (on WhatsApp/ LINE) instead though.

So happy you enjoyed the tour! Sorry for the little glitch in the start time we are thrilled that it did not cause too much trouble for you. Nishiki is really wonderful and though people often go with out a guide we feel a local can really share so much more info about the history and ingredients in the market. Glad you enjoyed and thank you for your kind review!

We felt so lucky to go on this food tour. Our host Rosalia was extremely knowledgeable about the market, vendors and all things unique to Kyoto. We even learned the way to say "Thank you!" for the regional dialect. This market is seasonal so there was much fresh vegetable and fruit to view. They preserve many things in Kyoto and we learned about different ways they preserve fish and vegetable. We tasted so many yummy things on our Nishiki Market tour: octopus, pickles (lots of pickles), fresh mochi with strawberry, fish cakes, tofu and some yummy natural drink made with local honey and fruits like yuzu. Rosalia showeed us how some hers and spices can dynamically change the taste of our dashi - oiishi! We also were privileged enough to have a quick sake tasting! So yummy!
Our lunch was in a beautiful restaurant served in a very traditional style with our choice of some dishes and drinks (lunch is included in the price, but alcohol is additional). The lunch featured some of the types of food from the market as well as tofu, salad, soup, chawanmushi (savory custard), vegetables, and a rice dish with our choice of protein. It was a great way to learn about the food of Kyoto.
As a parting gift, we received dashi packets from Rosalia to use in our own home - so yummy. We learned more about the festivals in Kyoto and Obon - they have some very special ceremony for the ancestors! We had a wonderful morning of learning about the food and culture of Kyoto. Rosalia is an absolutely wonderful host. i'd do it again! Okini!

We enjoyed our tour through Nishiki Market with our guide Chie. Chie was knowledgeable and sweet. We stopped at many shops in the market, trying a number of delicious dishes including fish cakes, octopus, sea urchin and clams. The final multi-course meal was also tasty. Chie gave us great tips throughout (shopping, etiquette, etc), including some for our day trip to Osaka immediately after. A great way to spend a few hours.

Left the same review under Arigato Japan's page, but wanted to leave here as this is how we connected. My partner and I had the opportunity to go through Nishiki market with Akari and company. They took us to many wonderful points to sample delicious treats. We stopped in many shops for souvenirs that I don't think I'll get an opportunity to pick up anywhere else. The final 7 course lunch was amazing :-) Rena and I were lucky to be the only ones to be on this tour. We found it educational and a great opportunity to learn more about the area and culture. Akari and her partner were super friendly. I'd recommend this group and tour hands down.
