We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Just under two hours in the oh so charming geisha district of Gion. I had read that the group sizes were too large and it was hard to hear, but the price of the tour and the opportunity to have someone walk us around the back streets of a historic district of Kyoto was worth the gamble. Our group was 5, so we had plenty of time to ask the many questions that spring to mind when you are being introduced to such a different culture. Our guide was helpful and knowledgable and very sweet, answering even the most embarrassing questions about the geishas. So in sum the cost of the tour represented an excellent value for my travel dollar! The only (mild) complaint I had was the lack of assistance with directions. The Gion district has limited access, and we were staying near Kyoto Station. So, if you have a Japan Rail Pass and are near Kyoto Station, take the Nara Line to the Tofukuji stop. Switch to the Keihan Line (easy, adjacent and well-marked) and go three stops to Gion-Shijo (160 yen/adult). If you’ve googled the Gion Omoide Museum you should be able to find your group easily as it’s basically across the street. The meeting point is not on the street parallel to the river, but rather close to the corner on a side street perpendicular, roughly across from where you come up from the train (which is actually subterranean at that point). The guides will be standing around holding a stick with a flag (or something similar) on the end so that will help you identify them.

A perfect night out looking around the ‘just like the movies’ Gion Geisha district.

The guide spoke English very well, was imprimatur and very pleasant. She was happy to answer questions and also allowed plenty of time to take photos.

We were lucky enough to see some actual Geisha during our tour as well (you can’t take photos of them).

We booked the 6pm tour and then after it finished (about 7.45pm) we found a place to eat dinner before returning to our hotel.

Highly recommend this tour extremely cheap compared to other operators and well worth it

Our guide Mie was excellent, she was very knowledgeable, amusing and likeable. Her enthusiasm for her job shone through and she gave many insights into Maiko and geiko lives and the changes over the years. We were even lucky enough to see a Maiko going off to a Tea House. We learnt so much about the Gion district even though we had spent a few days there before hand. Would thoroughly recommend it!

A 1.5hr stroll around the geisha district at night time was very informative, not too fast paced, nice in the dark and felt very 'atmospheric' with a guide that spoke excellent English and was easy to understand. Would definitely recommend to families of young teenagers and up. Learnt heaps. 10/10

We had such a wonderful time on this tour with our guide Chie! She had so much great information to share with us about each part of the tour- we learned so much about geishas and even spotted some in the Gion district. Chie was lovely and seemed genuinely happy and excited to be guiding us. She took plenty of photos for us too. Our dinner was delicious. Fun, informative and great food, perfect night out in Kyoto. We would definitely recommend this tour, thank you Chie!

The guide really brought the Gion to life. She was able to explain the history and the life of the maiko and geiko. It was both informative and great fun. Everyone in the group joined in to make the walk a great evening. The guide was able to point out a geiko and later in the evening we were fortunate enough to see a maiko on her way to an appointment. A great evening.

We totally enjoyed our night walking tour of Gion, the principal geisha district of Kyoto. Our guide Provided plenty of insight to the geisha culture from a young age until quite old age. She was very knowledgeable having been an interpreter for the geishas and having many acquaintances within the geisha culture. The tour is not to be missed if you want to learn more about this unique culture.

We had an excellent time touring through the small streets of Gion and listing to all the stories from our guide. Our guide, Mie was fantastic and really knew the area and the history of Kyoto very well. She was very friendly and made us feel comfortable right from the start. Luckily we were able to see a Geisha and Maiko walking the streets.

I booked this very last minute as it looked like good value for money and am very glad I did. Chako was so friendly and extremely knowledgable about not only the geiko-san's of Gion but also Kyoto in general. I'd go as far as to say it's one of the best walking tours I've ever been on as the subject is so unique and fascinating. The tour was filled many fun facts and the time flew by. I cannot recommend this tour enough.
