A not to be missed experience in Kyoto
We spent a delightful afternoon learning about traditional methods for dying fabrics and trying our hand at it. We learned a lot and saw some exquisite work that required years to create.

      Just do it!
This was a wonderful hands on experience that gives you something to take home from your time in a Japan that you made. The class was fun, very well explained and demonstrated. The museum upstairs is a must. We had a young gentleman curator that took the time to explain and demonstrate Shibori techniques. I was totally fascinated. He was wonderful and gave me a whole new appreciation for the art of Shibori and its many fascinating techniques and processes. Wow! Highly recommend.

Well worth it. Expect to smile a lot.
This was a highlight of our time in Kyoto. The instructors were very capable and knowledgeable, but most of all they showed delight in our achievements, sharing our excitement at the reveal. After the class, we were given an informative personal tour of the museum, at our own pace, with patience and pleasure.

      Excellent learning experience!
A fun day and way to learn about a beautiful cultural art form. You'll be able to learn more of the many ways of intricate art of tying and dying in the museum after creating your own simple kyo-arashi shibori scarf.

      Great insight into Japanese traditions
This was a great way to learn about Japanese traditional Shibori dyeing. You can dye your own scarf and look around a fantastic exhibit of Shibori techniques. Lovely english speaking staff. Thank you, we really enjoyed this experience.

      Shibori fabric dyeing
A great learning experience. I was instructed in the folding and dyeing of the fabric. As the fabric dried I went upstairs to view a video and see more examples of this incredible dyeing technique. This is a working studio. Welcoming to questions. Enjoyed my visit.

      Highlight of my trip!
Though the museum is close to the subway, I was running late, so I took a taxi there & the driver said it was muzukashii (difficult) to find. It was well worth finding—very kind & talented artisans work there (+ speak excellent English). They are very patient & make you feel like a star! I took two classes to make a cotton furoshiki + silk scarf. While waiting for my “art” to dry, I got a personal museum tour by the owner’s son. Great info + spectacular art--I would definitely return to take another class again!

A wonderful glimpse at textile art
Such a cool museum. It's not large, but it will teach you a lot about shibori. We were led on a tour by one of the shibori artists, who gave us all the information we could have wanted and even demonstrated some of the techniques. There is lots to see, and many beautiful textiles to purchase and take home with you.

Created a unique momentous and had fun
Really fun way to make a unique momento of Kyoto. The room of finished pieces was lovely, and I picked up a couple of unique souvenirs (bag and jacket) which were very reasonably priced. Probably of more interest to women than men.

      A hidden gem
The experience was really enjoyable making a shibori. The staff are lovely and while they dried and pressed our items , we saw a film on the very skilled art and how it is used and dyed. We were then shown an exhibition of art by a famous artist who has made 55 pictures of various places from Tokyo to Kyoto. We looked around their show and bought a beautiful Haori. The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable and it was a pleasure to meet them, would thoroughly recommend this.

A class, little shop, and museum
A little place on a side street. Call ahead to sign up for a class in english. We had fun making our shibori wrapping clothes. There are other options as well. The family have been making cloth, clothing and kimono for many years. The museum upstairs (not wheelchair accessible). Is beautiful. Highly recommend.

      Definitely worth a visit.
Great visit to this family run museum. We had a great time doing a brief shibori class. The attention from the staff was excellent and the class was fun. The staff were also well informed regarding the history and process of shibori. The display was well set up and we had a great hour or so here.

      Unique experience!
The workshop was so much fun -- just the right level of challenge for an absolute beginner like me -- and i was so pleased with the outcome! The instructor was great -- patient and explicit -- and I got the chance to explore the museum while my shibori was drying. I would definitely recommend this experience!

Great Visit for Both a Fabric Pro & an Companion
I am a textile artist and already knew the techniques being taught in the class, so skipped those. I just visited the museum and exhibit. This place is quite small, but the short informational video (in English or Japanese) does a great job of explaining the wonder of this technique in a very accessible way - it was great for both a relative professional like myself and a suffering dragged-along friend ;) The exhibit itself (which rotates seasonally - when I went it was an exhibit of Hokusai paintings recreated in shibori) was mind-boggling!! Because I was really interested, I spent almost 2 hours here, and even found a couple things in their gift shop. Their gift shop pricing is a touch high, but it goes to a good cause - funding museum commissions from artisans to help keep the craft alive. Museum fee was not bad, and their gift-shop is tax-free!!

If you love textiles and making beautiful things, this class is for you! Our group of 6 easily booked the Itajime Shibori Scarf Class with the online request form. The response was immediate, even after the Museum was closed. I requested the class to be taught in English - no problem! I was even able to add our 6th guest at the last minute since the family owned business is so responsive.
We were shown a variety of patterns and colors to choose from and were helped thoroughly for each step. The excitement was incredible when the finished scarf was revelead, quite a memorable souvenir.
While the scarves were drying, we viewed the small museum that was filled with incredible shibori artwork. There is also a gift shop with a nice price range of beautiful shibori clothing, scarves, accessories and purse.
The Yoshioka Family was there on staff to welcome and assist us. Their hospitality was a highlight along with the beautiful artwork the family has produced for several generations!

This was a really fun unique experience! They were able to accommodate a last minute booking. It’s great for beginners with no experience. The scarf dyeing portion is pretty quick and lasts about 20 minutes. I would love it if they offered more advanced workshops for people with higher skill sets, I would happily pay more for a workshop that included more handwork like thread wrapping. But overall I had a great time and loved seeing the beautiful handiwork of the artisans on display.

I really, really enjoyed this class. I loved the opportunity to do Shibori dyeing on a silk scarf that I took home with me. If you are a textile lover, you will also swoon over the collection in the museum (where the class is held). The craftsmen here are the top of their craft and their work is breathtaking. Highly recommend a visit when you're in Kyoto.

Everyone at the Kyoto Shibori Museum were so nice and friendly. They helped my kids (8 and 5) design their scarves and were so encouraging. We came out with beautiful souvenirs and a great appreciation for the shibori technique. This was my kids' favorite activity in Kyoto. I would highly recommend it!

If you like crafts and to learn more about traditional techniques this is an excellent activity. You are guided through the process by artisans and then while they dry and fold your scarf you can visit the attached museum where there are examples of the artisans skills.
This is a traditional technique that has been used in this area for hundreds of years. It is still used today to make kimono.

Our Itajime course was amazing, we learnt a lot about the craft and the staff were very kind and knowledgable and had no problem answering a lot of questions.
Had a wonderful morning folding and then dying our scarfs in their very cute dyeshop. it was lovely to learn about the intricate processes they use to make kimonos and we are still shocked at the length of time it takes to ready the fabric for dying(up to 3 years!)
The museum upstairs is great too, you get to watch a video explaining every type of Shabori with examples shown in the museum.
Beautiful work overall to see & happy to take a slice of it home! Thank you!

I stumbled upon this place when looking for something to do one afternoon. Was so happy I did! A friend and I did the silk dyeing experience and had a blast with the kind teacher. For those of you who don't speak Japanese, the docent the day of our trip spoke excellent English and explained the history and method of shibori in detail.

A great experience for those looking to take a step back from the crowded main streets of Kyoto!

If you’re into arts and crafts this class is for you. Nina our teacher was very nice and patient helping us dye our scarves. She explained the step by step process in achieving our desired design. After the class we were also shown a short video on the history of shibori and how the more complicated designs were made. Very impressive. We had fun in this class and best of all you get to bring home your work of art as souvenir.
