- D9419LGsharonj00Izakaya cooking classAbsolutely wonderful staff and the food was delicious!! I would go back again! The location was good, a bus from the station and a little walk.
- kazlynp00Great Kyoto cooking experienceOur class at Cooking Sun was really well run. Our teachers were great and kept everything and everyone on track, and the food was delicious. We made five dishes and enjoyed them all - with an optional sake at the end. We were given the recipes, so looking forward to trying these out again when I get home.
- F6994QQsamk00Fun Times, Great CookingWould 100% recommend this cooking class if you are spending any time in Kyoto. The staff speaks great English and the whole cooking process is very easy understand. Plus, the food you make is delicious! If you are looking to engage with the culture or take home part of Japan with you, this experience is it!
- Mehill1900Fun cooking class KyotoWe did the Afternoon Izakaya Class yesterday and it was a wonderful experience. The ladies teaching the class were great fun to spend the afternoon with; explaining every recipe and technique clearly. We made some amazing food which was a pleasure to eat during the class. My 15 year old enjoyed the class as much as I did- it will be one of the highlights of our trip. We had notified some dietary restrictions in advance and Cooking Sun were happy to accommodate this. Thank you, ladies for and amazing afternoon!
- JulieLaQuebecoise00Great introduction to izakaya cooking !Very nice and well organized cooking class ! The recipies were simple and delicious, and we were given printed instructions to reproduce them at home !
- AwayFromI00Worth it!The Izakaya cooking class was a great activity to do, especially as an escape from the summer heat. The cooking setup is ideal with each group of 2 people having their own workspace. The food was excellent with just the right split between pre-prepped stuff and hands-on stuff. The instructors spoke English well and it was interesting to learn about the unique Japanese ingredients used. Highly recommend. Our session consisted of two families, 8 people total, ranging in ages from about 10 to seniors and all had a good time.
- LaraDanobeitia00Fantastic afternoon and delicious food. Really experiential.A truly fabulous experience. Everything was so well organised. We cooked 6 delicious dishes (and ate them!) Everyone gets to do everything, not just watch! Perfect for teenagers. The ladies leading the afternoon were so friendly and spoke brilliant English. I couldn’t recommend it this highly enough. Enjoy
- JPASSP00YES!! Take this super fun and tasty class!Great fun and a tasty meal too! My family really enjoyed our izakaya cooking class. The instructors were super cute and friendly and taught us the secrets of Japanese cooking. We had a great time and I would very much recommend this class to anyone wanting a hands on experience of Japanese style cooking! I loved that they had sake by the glass to go with our meal as well as some of the cooking tools for sale onsite. 5 star experience!
- valeriad84600Top experience! We had a great time during the Izakaya cooking class at Cooking Sun. It’s great that you get to cook a whole Japanese menu with all the secrets about ingredients and basic knowledge on the techniques. It’s an experience that I would recommend to anyone while in Kyoto.
- jiji97asd00Simple Dishes, Big FlavorsThis cooking class was so awesome! I have dietary restrictions and they made sure to accommodate me. I appreciate them going out of their way to ensure I had a great experience. The food was excellent! I'm surprised I was able to make such delicious but simple dishes. The guides were lovely and they helped us every step of the way. They were so kind and respectful. I had a great time and most importantly everything seemed sanitary! Highly recommend.
- Rupert M00Super sweet host but not worth it.Our guide was really lovely and caring. Given this, her English was limited. This tour was not worth the price. Our first visit was to a supermarket that's visited by locals, something I could have googled myself and was not explicitly stated in the tour description. We did not get any historical explanations of what was eaten or the any of the sites we passed. For over $200+ this Was very expensive to visit super markets and buying small items of food along the way. All the foods that were purchased was simply not worth the price. I could have taken the train to the market and ordered the foods on my own. Again, the tour guide was very generous and nice. We enjoyed her company more.
- S3612HHmichaelv00Fantastic range of Japanese dishes in this classFantastic cooking class covering a wide range of Japanese dishes, from fresh-pickled cucumbers to dashi-sauced pasta to chicken katsu. I can’t wait to get home and make this menu for my friends!
- Rebecca W00Ideal experienceWe couldn’t have had a better experience! Class was very hands on but not too difficult for our 10 and 12 year old kids, who loved it. We learned new techniques and took home recipes we will definitely try on our own. Highly recommend.
- S3612HHmichaelv00Great tour of Nishiki market and other local food specialty storesFantastic tour of a Japanese grocery store, the basement food court of Daimaru department store, a few local specialty food stores, and a walk through Nishiki market. Momo was full of information and great suggestions, and I had a taste of some fantastic food. The curry bun and sashimi at Nishiki market were my favorites. Thank you again to Momo and Cooking Sun!
- jacquie11700The beating heart of KyotoGreat communication from the provider followed up by our guide Aiko who sprinkled us with interesting details around the food habits, history and culture of Kyoto all with a smile that the rain did not dampen. We had delicious snacks and tastes, be bold and try the things on offer, the kelp and rice was amazing, as were the delicious Hiro beef skewers, melt in your mouth! So glad to have had this opportunity to dive into the detail of this city. Thankyou Sun Cooking

A superb activity and one of the real highlights of our trip. The food we created was lovely and the instructor (Maya) was superb - she gave very clear instructions, answered all of our questions and gave some really interesting and useful additional information on the origins of the ingredients, alternative ingredients to use (including for vegetarians) and advice on how to adapt recipes. I thoroughly recommend the course/activity for others (veggie or meat eaters alike - we had both in our party). Thanks for a great experience Cooking Sun!

A really great experience and well worth it if you can get in - make your reservations in advance, esp during high season. Easy to follow recipe, great instructions - all in well spoken English, clean, neat and very helpful. Lots of assistance if you require and hands on guideance. Great location too. Just do it! You'll love it.

This was a highlight for me and my 19 year old daughter. Our travel agent booked this event. Place is in residential area of Kyoto. Great instructor. We got the recipes for everything we made and will happily recreate once back in the U.S. We made a bento box with Miso soup, teriyaki chicken, tempura, sushi roll and spinach/sesame salad.

The teacher was very helpful and demonstrated each step and gave any needed assistance. They were very communicative and accommodated the dietary restrictions of myself and the others in tailoring the meal for us. They were also very sociable and there was pleasant conversation throughout the lesson. The Bento meal produced by the end was delicious.

Our family loved this experience. We learnt to make so many delicious dishes and the teacher Keiko was kind and knowledgeable and encouraged everyone. We can't wait to make the teriyaki chicken again at home, it was our favourite. A wonderful experience in Kyoto and a highlight of our Japan trip; highly recommend.

I am an unskilled cook -can follow a recipe and that's it- but taking this class gave me hope that I may be able to recreate these dishes at home. Nothing very technical. Great way to socialize with others. You get to eat your own creation at the end!

We had a really great time preparing bento. Our teacher was very patient and knowledgable. A good range of different Japanese cooking techniques and tips to use at home. Don’t eat a big breakfast though as you prepare a lot of food!

Cooking Sun was very accommodating when we wanted to make a last minute switch from the market tour class to the bento box class, and we had a fantastic time. The bento box class is great as you get a chance to try a number of Japanese cooking techniques (tempura, rolled omelet, etc.). The variety of items within one class seemed fairly unique vs. other cooking schools. Our instructors (Maya and Keiko) were really friendly and more than happy to answer questions about the cooking as well as Japanese culture.

I am not a cook and as I’m just retired I thought maybe I’d better learn something new. The teacher has lovely English and is very patient.
She taught us so much in the 3 hours we were there and I was able to eat everything for lunch - I was very full.
The recipes are so good and the results are delicious. The teacher is very informative. I am now able to understand some of the basics about Japanese cooking. For example I didn’t know light soy sauce doesn’t colour the egg roll and is more salty than dark soy sauce!
I highly recommend this as a great way to spend a few hours. The kitchen is well equipped and a lovely atmosphere, with no washing up!

Good afternoon, I am interested to join this class with my partner. I am just wondering where is the location of this class, as I will in Arashiyama and heading into Nijo the same day. Trying to plan my trip. Thank you.
