What to expect
  • Take a hands-on journey into Japan’s food culture during this exploration of Kyoto’s top food markets and a sake brewery, finishing with a 1.5-hour cooking class where you get to bring your day’s food experience to life. It’s the perfect excursion for anyone looking to take a deeper dive into the culinary ingredients and traditions of Japanese cuisine. Start your food experience with a meet-up at the city’s Daimaru Kyoto Department Store in the afternoon, where you’ll meet your guide. Follow your guide out into the city for a 2-hour walking exploration of some of Kyoto’s food hotspots. Visit the famous Nishiki Food Market, where you’ll explore the wide variety of Japanese foodstuffs for use in your cooking class later that day. Explore the market’s collection of spices and produce as you sit back and observe the blur of activity at the city’s main food center. Then head to a former sake brewery and museum, where you can taste a few of the country’s wide variety of sakes. You’ll also learn about how this celebrated beverage is created (Please note, if the museum is not open on the day of your trip, an admission ticket will be provided for later use). Continue after your tasting to the machiya, a typical Kyoto-style wooden home, which will host your cooking lesson. Your 1.5-hour session teaches you to prepare a classic Japanese dinner, including items such as miso soup, cooked salad, sushi and seasonal fruit.  Enjoy your meal with the other guests before spending the rest of the evening exploring Kyoto at your own leisure. For those who wish to return to their hotel after the tour, your guide will help coordinate transportation. Note: Click the ‘View additional info’ link below to see a map of the meeting location.

Great Walking Tour
Jan 2020 • Couples
We had an excellent walking tour round the market and a fabulous cooking experience perhaps the Sake tasting could have been a little more informative, so if you want the focus on looking at food, buying ingredients and cooking them this is for you, overall a great trip

Price higher than advertised -BEWARE
Dec 2019 • Couples
Price was not as advertised. After booking and being initially charged. The company refused to give us the address we required, unless we paid an additional 3500 yen each. Essentially extorted for more. Expensive, cooking class had minimal English, but nice lady. Would avoid.

Thank you for joining the WAK JAPAN's tour at the last year-end and also your review. We're sorry for the inconvenience this time regarding the additional year-end fee, however we remember you agreed with our request and finally charged the additional fee with your consent. We hope you enjoyed our walk tour with sushi cooking as well as trekking the day before the tour.

Fantastic market and cooking experience!
Nov 2019 • Couples
We were met at the entrance to the Nishiki Market by our very friendly and knowledgeable guide Yumiko. Yumiko spoke outstanding English and gave us a lot of insights to the history of the market and explained all of the traditional foods. During our market visit we bought 3 ingredients for our cooking class and Yumiko taught us the correct Japanese phrases and pronounciation, including the local dialect. We enjoyed the market visit immensely!! After the market we hurried off to do some Sake tasting and then to our cooking class / demo. Also here our teacher spoke perfect English and was SUPER friendly! We made miso soup, a spinach sesame salad and a rolled omelette which we used to fill our Sushi. The cooking was fun and the food very tasty. We can highly recommend this tour!!

Yoshie and the course was fantastic
My wife and I was on this course as part of a package holiday. It was amazing, we were joined by another really friendly couple. We walked through the market and learn’t so much about this history behind the food and the market and the local delicacies. Then at both the sake sampling and the cookery class we had some high quality food and drink and we could not have wished for more. I will definitely be trying some of the recipes when I get home!

I am not sure how much we paid for the afternoon as it was part of the package, however the prices on trip advisor currently would mean that for me it is just a little bit expensive for me to say it is outstanding value for me it is good value.

A couple of points to note you will be on your feet for at least 90 minutes and in the cookery class you are sat on low stalls so might not work for all of those with mobility difficulties.

We had such a great time!! It was fast paced but still casual. The tour was informative and energetic with the hustle and bustle of the market. The cooking class was so much fun and the hands on experience was just what we wanted. And to top it all off, the food was DELICIOUS! We highly recommend this experience.

Amazing tour and class
Jul 2019 • Couples
This is such a well run, and interesting tour! I'd highly recommend to anyone interested in Japanese food culture and cooking. The tour of Nishiki market was interesting and we got to learn about all sorts of interesting foods and but some ingredients for the cooking class. There was a short stop for sake tasting, which was a nice addition. The highlight of the tour was the cooking class with Machiko who was an excellent and enthusiastic teacher! We loved learning how to cook and roll sushi, and sitting down to eat at the end of the afternoon was delicious and rewarding!
We did this in a group of two and it was really fun.

Great activity
Jun 2019
This tour was exactly as promised. Our guide showed us through the market, explained types of foods on sale, encouraged us to sample wares, and taught us basic words for shopping. Enjoyed the sake factory tour and tasting. Finally, the cooking lessons was perfect, focusing basics of home cooking and then a very enjoyable dinner.

Great group experience
Jul 2018
I took this tour and cooking class with my wife and friend and it was a lot of fun. We learned some history in the market, a little Japanese language and culture and had a great time critiquing each other's cooking skills. Definitely a great time for all of us and a very memorable experience.

Outstanding private cooking class
Jul 2018 • Family
We were very fortunate to take a cooking class at a private home.
Machiko Kimura, our cooking Instructor was incredible. With a perfect English and a lot of patience, she showed us how to cook typical Kyoto specialties. The meal was delicious and we wish we could spend more time with her.
