About
Kyudo is a Japanese martial art based on shooting an arrow from a Japanese bow to a target to reach a complete focus of mind and body. The main difference of kyudo and western archery is that, in kyudo, every movement follows a traditional routine that pays respect to the equipment and to the opponent. You will come to the archery range and dress in an authentic kyudo uniform, which will include dogi—the upper wear—and hakama—the lower wear. I'll give a brief explanation about the art of kyudo as well as instructions and demonstrations. With the knowledge you'll gain, you will learn to shoot arrows at the target. You'll also understand the fun and challenging aspect of the sport, particularly while wearing the traditional hakama and armor. Usually in kyudo, you are not allowed to pull the arrow unless you master the basics. But during our lesson, you will be able to enjoy the real kyudo experience even as a complete beginner. It will be a great time if you are looking for a nice photo or movie to show to your friends.

- ConstancePrunet0 contributionsA great experienceIt was excellent. The instructor was nice and friendly, explained a few stuff about this traditional archery and let us practice and even fight each other in a tiny competition. Do not expect a big dojo as this is a small practice room for seated archery, but this was great and not easy!Written March 28, 2023

We booked this discovery class for a family of 4, inclusing two teenagers. It is an unusual activity to make in japan, far from the traditional arts crafting and tea houses. We were looking for something that our teenage kids would enjoy and still learn about japanese traditions and way of life.
The owner speaks english and was very patient while showing us over and over how to handle correctly the bows.
We paid for the extra traditional clothings: it really helps you getting into the spirit of this sport, and it makes photos and vidéos much cooler !
We took the 30min class : starting with a 5min explanation, then we shot approx 10 arrows for training, then we had a competition for the best out of 8 arrows. All in all it was quite short but enough to satisfy the kids. For a group of adults I would advise taking the 60min class.
I give a special 6th star for the owner who was very friendly and helpful.

The teacher was very professional and friendly throughout the whole lesson. They gave a brief history and explanation about the different bows before giving a demonstration on how to use one of them. They then gave me the opportunity to practice firing arrows using the same bow. The teacher gave very clear instructions and was always quick to correct any mistakes I was making. By the end I felt like I was really getting a hang of it and I appreciate the time and effort that the teacher took to get me to that stage. It was a very fun experience and I would definitely recommend it to any travelers who visit Hiroshima. Thanks so much!

This was incredibly fun! And Challenging! The Host was a great teacher. Though he isn’t fluent in English, don’t let that deter you! It was very easy to communicate with him via any of your default translation apps on your phone.
He tells you the history of the sport and will answer any questions that you might have, just ask!
He will also teach you different techniques until you find one that works for you. For me, going by “feeling” was the best. “Like throwing a ball.”
This was a fantastic experience with a charismatic and enthusiastic host. He will take pictures and videos of your progress during the scoring test. Yes, you shoot a bunch of rounds and get scored and given a score card (sticker) so you know what you need to beat next time.
Highly recommended.

The Japanese archery experience was amazing! The classes are conducted in small groups, and we were privileged enough to have the session to ourselves.
The instructor (I cannot remember his name) was really friendly, patient and engaging. We felt very comfortable during the whole experience even though his English was limited, plus his instructions were easy to understand. He also gave us a short educational history on the art of Japanese archery. During the experience he was also proactive in taking photos for us and they were of really good quality (not sure if he dabbles in photography).
Definitely a unique experience I would recommend to anyone visiting Hiroshima, even if you have done western archery before (it's very different, and imo harder). I would definitely go back again if I'm in Hiroshima.
Thank you for the great experience!

Our instructor was experienced and thorough. We dressed in traditional clothing and learned the Japaneese method. After practicing, we had a contest and won reward stickers. Our instrructor used Google translate, which worked very well both Japaneese to English and vice versa: communicatin was easy and complete. We made a reservation for 5:00 PM, but went to the studio early, and were able to begin immediately. Suggest you make a reservation, but then if you like, call or stop by.

Oh this was so much fun! I rarely write reviews after I travel but this is worth taking the time. We had a great time learning the bow technique at this place. The lesson comes with the traditional outfit and the guy who taught us was just great. Highly recommend this as a fun and easy way to experience a martial art in Hiroshima, japan.

I have so much fun!! The instructor is very patient with me and instructions are easy to understand. Price is reasonable. I came in at a quiet time (around 6pm), hence, I have a one-to-one learning experience (lucky me!!). Instructor also email me pictures & video of me shooting arrows. It was so much fun, you have to come!

Booked the tour as a family of 3 with our little guy for one hour, very intimate and only us there. Dressed up and instructed on the way to handle the equipment, shoot the arrows etc We had great fun and really enjoyed the experience. Tiny couple of notes, it wasn't until halfway through that the instructor realised that our little guy as only 9 should have had more help from the instructor, they thought that he was 14 years (he's tall) and it's not the easiest to find as it's a doorway leading upstairs, googlemaps got a little confused, it's right next to a craft beer restaurant. Would highly recommend, great time!

The experience was lots of fun. The instructor was very knowledgeable and made sure that all safety rules were followed. Despite his limited English he was able to explained everything clearly. He used the Google translate program to help when explaining the shooting procedure.
He had me dress up in traditional Japanese archery dress which made the experience even more fun. They took photos and videos of me. They even got a video of me shooting a bullseye. I will have long good memories of the archery traditional experience.

Anyone who has never really shot a bow before or is interested in the traditional Japanese way of shooting a bow will get their money's worth here. The traditional grip technique is explained and instructed in detail, and the optional wearing of traditional clothing allows for some nice pictures of the experience. Shooting takes place until the time is up. The rooms seem a bit small at first, but are perfectly adequate and contribute to a private experience. All in all, the price/performance ratio was very good, but I would have liked a little more background information on traditional archery.
