Hokkaido Sake Tasting Experience - well worth it!
Some friends and I were in Hokkaido over New Years and we wanted to do something fun and special while we were in Sapporo. Since we were only in Sapporo for a few days, I thought this tour would be a great way for us to see the city and find some good places to eat and drink. Our host, Asuka, was great! She emailed me well ahead of our trip with a rough plan for our tour, and with some input from me, she put together a great itinerary for us. She took us to a stand-up sake bar, and then to a small izakaya where we got to taste several different types of sake and had a great dinner with lots of local dishes (the dinner was extra), and then we ended at a parfait cafe where we had very elaborate and decadent desserts. All of the places that Asuka chose for us were very representative of, and unique to, the Japanese culture, and she walked us through the main shopping districts and gave us a good understanding of the layout of the city. Asuka was also such a good sport, answering all of the questions we had for her, about herself and Japanese culture in general. Also, I should mention that we had 10 people in our group, so it was so great that Asuka was able and willing to take us around the city and find places big enough for all of us, especially when most places were closed for the holiday. I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone who wants a personal guide to show them around the city and lead them to some great spots. And I would highly recommend Asuka as a great guide!

We had a guide who had no plan about what to do and really didn’t want to engage at all.
We would have been better off taking ourselves on a walking tour with a map and compass. Don’t bother with the cost of this trip is isn’t worth it.

If you are interested in experiencing Japanese food, seeing the sights of Sapporo or just chatting with a local and learning a bit about Japanese culture do a tour through Cityunscripted as we did a couple of days ago.
My 19 year old daughter and I did a 3 hour personalised tour of Sapporo with a lovely local girl, Asuka.
Through Cityunscripted we requested that we wanted to try some local specialties, visit some interesting stores and learn a bit about Sapporo.
They then match you with a local English speaking guide who then contacts you and works out an itinerary.
The communication process via email was faultless.
You can also nominate your start time.
Asuka met us at our hotel, she was lovely, we learned about her life in Japan, and about her family and her travels.
She took us to 2 different restaurants, a soup curry place( a Sapporo delicacy) where we had a wonderful curry soup.
Then on to a beautiful store selling good quality goods made in Japan.
Then to a seafood izakaya restaurant where we of course had some great seafood inc drinks.
Obviously the guides have a food budget to adhere to depending on your requests, had to pay a bit extra for some extra drinks but that was understandable and fine.
    Very full after all that!
Asuka also emailed a few other sights and restaurants to go to in our spare time.
To sum up, this experience was well worth it and I would highly recommend using Cityunscripted and meeting the locals.

While the tour did not fully align with the advertised food-focused itinerary, our experience with Ryuki, our knowledgeable and engaging guide, made it memorable.
Ryuki's excellent English skills and deep knowledge of Sapporo and Japanese culture enriched our experience. He took us to an overlook of the city, explaining its history, and guided us through the Sapporo shrine, sharing insights into local rituals.
We enjoyed exploring local eateries and indulging in authentic ramen and sushi.
Ryuki's expertise in guiding us through the sushi menu and encouraging us to try new flavors made it the best sushi experience we've ever had.

It should be noted that the tour's actual itinerary deviated from the advertised food-focused experience titled "Eat like a local in Sapporo".

Despite the itinerary discrepancy, we recommend this tour for travelers seeking a personalized and informative experience in Sapporo. Ryuki's expertise and the opportunity to discover hidden gems, including a truly exceptional sushi experience and cultural insights, made it a worthwhile adventure.

With just a day to explore Sapporo from our cruise ship, we decided to get a taste of the city by booking a food tour. Shiunn was a fantastic guide who took us to an amazing fried chicken restaurant, followed by a visit to the Sapporo TV Tower and a popular bakery where we tried some savoury treats and onigiri. We then saw some sights on our walk to Shiunn’s favourite soup curry restaurant, and finished off with an icecream parfait. So much food!! It was a great way to see the city and enjoy some local delicacies at the same time. Thank you Shiunn!

The guide was friendly, and I appreciated the ideas of inviting locals to introduce their city. However, the overall experience could have been better.

Initially, I encountered some technical issues while filling out the survey for the tour. I contacted customer support and the tour guide with my survey responses and received prompt replies. I appreciate that.

However, I must express my disappointment with the actual tour experience. Despite my specific request for an "off-the-beaten" path, focusing on culture, history, and traditional folklore, the tour itinerary did not align with my expectations. The three-hour tour primarily showcased popular landmarks such as the Clock Tower, the TV Tower, and the Botanic Garden, offering readily available information that could be obtained through a simple online search.

While I acknowledge the guide's friendliness and effort to showcase the city, the overall experience fell short, especially considering the tour's pricing. I am inclined to request a refund (though I think it’s not possible). I have noticed similar sentiments in reviews from other travelers, and I hope the company can take this feedback into consideration to refine their service.

Karen was our tour guide. She is an expatriate that has adapted to the local environment and knew local Japanese food very well. She directed us to an interesting local restaurant where we had grilled local seafood and we then walked to the Susukino district where we had drinks at the Nikka distillery restaurant. A nice evening but not too informative about Japan or the city. We didn’t see much of Sapporo at night beyond the restaurant and the drinking establishment. Not much was customized about this trip and can’t suggest this for those who want to see more of Sapporo at night.

Emilio was a wonderful tour guide. He has lived in Sapporo for several years and knows the city very well. We started our tour at a wonderful fish market away from the heavy crowds. He introduced us to the subway and the fascinating underground city of walkways and stores. We also visited the top floor of a tall downtown building to get great panoramic views of the city. He then showed us to a wonderful restaurant for lunch.

All the while he spoke beautifully of the city, its people and what he loves most about Sapporo and what he finds challenging. He also shared his views of Japan in general and gave us advice on how to enjoy our trip going forward. Overall an A + rating for Emilio who we enjoyed very much. Thanks to Emilio and best wishes to him and his young family.

I came on a solo trip to Sapporo, Hokkaido to snowboard at Rusutsu. While here, I thought why not have someone help me look around and show me things I missed? I booked the half-day tour, my guide was Akihiro and I specified that I would like them to meet me at my accommodation. Akihiro met me exactly on time on the day of. He was very friendly and very knowledgable. He shared with me knowledge about Sapporo that helped enhance my experience.

There was a pretty strong snow storm the night before and it was still snowing the morning of the tour, so we were both very layered up in snow gear and doing a lot of walking around under falling snow. This also impacted what was available to us. For example, the ski jump area was closed for the day and we guessed that the visibility would not be great. In total, we visited Murayama park, Sapporo beer museum, Sapporo factory, and a local food convention showcasing local Hokkaido foods for that week only. I had a great time and got to see things that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. I think for a half day trip, I would have liked to spend less time at some stops to fit in more stops into the trip. But I'm also glad that I was given the time to take everything in. When I come to Sapporo again, I will consider asking Akihiro to show me more of Sapporo.

Our tour of Sapporo was fantastic! Ryuki went above and beyond what we expected. We were expecting to pay for taxis to get around to the various sites in the city but he drove us around in his own very comfortable car. He was friendly, outgoing and very knowledgeable. Not only did he take us to the various sites, but he also explained to us the cultural history and significance of the various sites. His English was impeccable. If you're looking for an English speaking tour guide in Sapporo please do yourself a favor and use Ryuki!

Good tour to get to know most of the highlights in the city. Emi was very clear in her explanations about the things to do and orientate us on the city centre. She also took time researching and preparing a file of travel schedules and places to visit at Jozankei as we had indicated an interest. She surprised us with a Japanese kanji translation of our names as well!

Thank you for the wonderful guided tour throughout Sapporo. We really enjoyed hiking through the parks, the view of the city, and the temple area, while learning how to use the subway and bus system. Of course, the meal in a traditional restaurant was perfect. This was a great way to explore the city.
