Fun evening playing Mahjong and eating local food!
I had a combined experience with Michael. First we played Mahjong and he brought some friends because I was a single traveller, and his friends completed the Mahjong table for me. After some good fun, we went for a food tour through Xi’an, where I could try some delicious local food with him. I was happy to have found Michael and that he adjusted the tour for one person only. Michael is kind, patient and he speaks very good English. He also likes eating like I do. I hope to return to Xi’an one day and play few more Mahjong rounds with him 😃

One of the most fun experiences I had in China!
I had seen Mahjong being played in so many movies and always thought it looked so cool. When I was researching before my trip, I was so excited to see this tour and finally have a chance to learn how to play! Winter is a really good teacher, and explains the rules in such a simple way that within a few minutes, we were already playing practice games, and within an hour or so, we were playing for real! The beauty of Mahjong is that the rules are really simple, but you really need to use your head (and you also need some luck) to win. I definitely need more practice because in the end, Winter took all my money! (Just kidding, we were only playing with chips.) I had such a wonderful time laughing with Winter, and that evening will be in my fond memories. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the awesome experience Winter!
We had an awesome food tour with Winter again! By chance we were the only two people on this tour so we were able to ask lots of questions and explore exactly what we liked as we walked the streets before. With the expert knowledge of Winter the following day, all of our questions were answered, and we even got to taste it all! The walking tour started with a couple of local dishes, followed by a quiet market in an amazing off the beaten path. We then picked back up with some more dishes from vendors on the street on our way to discover it. The tour wrapped up with a delicious dinner with beer!(it is not allowed to have a beer in the Muslim part) The highlight for us was the soup-dumplings! A must try! Thanks for the awesome experience Winter!

      A pleasant surprise!!
We weren’t planning on taking a cooking class on our trip. We were more interested in tasting the food than actually making it, but some how we ended up in a cooking class with Winter and I’m so glad that we did! Not only was the class a memorable part of our entire trip but also a fun break from so much walking. Winter is a wonderful person, a great teacher, and now also a good friend. He also continues to send me the updated cookbook that he is working on. I will attempt to make Biang Biang noodles at home soon but I’m sure they taste better in China! I highly recommend taking a cooking class or foodie tour with Winter!

So excited to know the "Chilli Cool Experience is now available in Xian!
You must try this mini adventure if you are in Xian...there is no better way to get in touch with locals at the market and have a little understanding of the food scene in China. Educational...interesting..lots of fun and laughter....Get cooking with Chilli Cool! We loved the guides and the whole experience...very different than marketing and cooking in Canada!!!

      Great work!
Both Lance and Winter from The Chili Cool Cooking Class have been tremendously helpful during our stay in chengdu! We had quite special requirements and they out did themselves. Our trip wouldnt have been the same without their support and knowledge. They now allot about food, the region and are translator experts. Thank you both!! Let’s keep in touch!! 🏁🏆

We met our guide Micheal at the metro, near a local food market in the morning. He was so friendly and informative, we learned a lot about food in the Shaanxi region, picked up some crazy cheap walnuts and various other bits to cook with. The class itself was great, we were cooking in a local restaurant, both my mother and I kneaded the noodle dough and hand pulled out noodles, eventually leading to a giant bowl of noodles for each person. My mum is veggie and the cooking class accommodated for that. Really enjoyed my time and would highly recommend as a way to explore real chinese culture.

We started with the visit of an authentic local market, with many tasting and lots of explanations about the whereabouts and products.
Then we went to a restaurant kitchen and met the chef, and were well explained, step by step, and with a touch of humor how to cook the famous buang biang noodles. After some time we were finally able to have a taste of our own cooking, sharing the meal with both Dongcheng the guide (and food lover) and Yan the chef.
A great morning for every cooking or food lover!

If you love food and enjoy exploring new places and really experiencing how the locals live their daily lives, this tour is perfect for you.
Winter is a wonderful guide: kind, informative, and funny! He showed me around the spice market and I had so much fun trying different snacks and learning about the food culture in Xian. If I had been there on my own, I am sure I would have felt a bit intimidated to ask shopkeepers about their products. That's where Winter came to the rescue and answered all my questions, or asked the locals for me! The locals at the market seem to like him a lot as well.
After the market, we went to a beautiful local restaurant/Baiju tavern where we hung out for a while and drank some delicious tea. Then a local chef gave me a lesson on how to make these awesome Biang Biang noodles. It was challenging but so much fun, and very rewarding in the end. Enjoy the noodles with bites of raw garlic, like a local! It gives it a nice kick!
When I visit a new city, I usually try to book myself these types of tours, and one thing I really appreciated about this one was that Winter was totally relaxed and really just felt like a friend whom I had come to visit. I've noticed that some tours can feel rehearsed/forced and although they are super nice, sometimes you can feel that the host is just "doing his job." Well, not this one! If you meet Winter, and spend the day with him, I am sure you will know what I mean. Book this tour if you want a really cool and fun experience, and if you want to make a friend in Xian. Thanks Winter, for a great time! :)

This was my third time visiting and exploring Xi’an. I have always enjoyed cooking and thought that this experience would be lots of fun. And, I wasn’t disappointed.
We learned about the various local produce, meats and spices. And, many people purchased items to take home with them.We all had a great time learning the tricks and tips of cooking this SPECIAL noodles of China. And, sitting down to enjoy the fruits of our labor was also quite a delight.

Definitely take the time to have this experience with Winter. You will not only walk away with a full belly, but also with a smile from your fun class.

My family and I went on a half day class, while in Xi'an for a week.

We had visited some of the markets before we went with Winter. The market he took us to was one of the best and it was great to be able to ask him questions about the things we had been wondering about. The kids especially enjoyed the chilli cool challenges - which got them searching for the hottest chilli etc. The cooking class was also great, hosted in a courtyard , the facilities were excellent. I definitely feel confident I could make Biangbiang noodles at home now.

Winter was a great host, all the chilli cool staff were very nice and it was a fun and interesting afternoon which we all enjoyed (even the four year old). Thank you!

I really like the Biangbiang noodles course I did with Winter and the local instructor.

The spice market tour was very fun, especially when it became hands-on. I had to try a special egg and learn the Mandarin to buy some. This was a lot of fun and I'm so glad that it was a part of the experience.

The cooking experience was also fun as well. Thankfully, it's not very complicated. They walked me through all the ingredients before we started. It definitely feels like something I can replicate on my own. And oh the noodles were delicious!
