I thoroughly enjoyed the selection of authentic local meals I ate during my tour. I had a great time learning about the origins of Xi’an’s flavours thanks to my guide Jane.

Great night out with the textile-man Buren. Sampled quite a few foods and provided us with a lot of information about other foods we couldn't fit in our stomachs that night.

The Lost Plate Food Tour by Tuk Tuk was not something we would normally choose to do. Our travel company arranged it and we were very pleasantly surprised. Our guide Buren was extremely knowledgeable about food (as well as being very friendly ) and introduced us to delicious food we would never have ordered before. A truly wonderful evening of great food and good company.

The tour by Tuk Tuk was totally worth it. Not only the food was delicious, but we had the chance to visit places that we wouldn't have found by ourselves. Our guide (Buren) is a really nice person, he shared a lot of information in a light and interesting way. I went with my parents and there were people from different countries and ages in our 6 people group. If you are looking forward to try some local food out of the super tuistic restaurants/streets that is a really fun way to do it.

Unfortunately, our experience wasn't good. The food we had was okay. Nothing special for quality/taste and neither unique dishes that we wouldn't have tried otherwise. We started with a big bowl of noodles that filled us more than you want at the start of a food tour. The whole tour felt super rushed, which gave us quite an uneasy feeling. Additionally, we (a couple) were the only ones doing the tour, which resulted in us making small talk to our guide to avoid the awkward silences. We honestly don’t understand why people seem to love it. Maybe if you don’t care too much about food that this could be an eye opening experience but if you’re a foodie I would definitely not recommend it.

We loved our tour with Buren! The food at every stop was amazing — I personally especially loved the dumplings at the third stop, which tasted different from dumplings I’ve had before. Buren was the best guide we could have asked for — I learned so much about Xi’an and its food, even though I was here last year as well. He was also super genuine and enthusiastic, and gave us food recommendations for the rest of our time here.

A food tour is always the highlight of our holiday, and here it was the same: Buren our guide, was very knowledgeable, the choice of restaurants was excellent, the tuktuk drivers were very skilled at their job; I had thought the tuktuk thing would be a bit of a gimmick but they turned out to be absolutely necessary (to give us the required range around the narrow/crowded streets) and very exciting. We have remained in contact with Buren after the tour and are exchanging views on the differences in how Peking Duck and Hotpot are cooked/served. Who could ask for more?

We had a fantastic evening with our guide Buren and visited nice restaurants in the hidden alleys of Xi‘An. Buren showed us authentic food places and explained a lot about the culture as well.

Fantastic tour. Amber was an exceptional host and it was great fun travelling through the evening chaos of Xi'an's Muslim quarter by TukTuk. Delicious food in well chosen restaurants giving a taste of the wide variety of styles native to Xi'an. Highly recommended. If you have the time and want to explore Xi'an's food and back streets this is a 'must do' tour.

We were a group of two adults and one 7-year-old (adventurous, but still very much with a kid's palate - disliking spicy and sour). There was one other family (7 people total, plus guide). Our guide Jane was great, explaining the food and answering questions from adults and kids alike. In no particular order, we ate biang biang noodles, a sweeter cold soup, gourd chicken, soup dumplings (not in soup, but the kind where the filling includes a soup), rice wine, golden bread, beef and lamp kebab, spicy sour carrots, and probably a few things I'm forgetting. For adults, everything was absolutely delicious, covered a wide variety of flavors, and we were definitely full by the end. The 7-year-old took a polite bite of everything (nothing was _too_ spicy for her to at least try), and really dove into the dumplings and the golden bread; she was also full and really enjoyed the tour as well. The tuk tuk rides were fun and through narrow alleys away from cars - no less safe than riding a bicycle and ensured small legs didn't get tired even though it was past bedtime and after a long day of touristing. We signed up the day before the tour, and are very happy that space was available. We went in summer, meaning Xi'an in general had a high number of domestic tourists because of the school break, but Jane was always able to snag a table and enough chairs and manage the total experience. We are already looking at other Lost Plate cities! All that said, the brewery at the end was perfectly fine, and I understand that's how the tours are set up in general, but the last stop felt a bit like a throw-away.
