Perfect way to experience cuisine of Guangzhou
I wanted to try out authentic Cantonese cuisine but most restaurants have menus completely in Chinese. Enter Maggie and Eating Adventures - the perfect way to sample a wide variety of foods and understand the cultural significance behind them.

    Excellent food tour
The tour starts with a walk through the busy streets of the Liwan district, which is fascinating in its self. Our guide, Maggie, was excellent with her local knowledge and gives a running narration as we moved along. We had six stops and got to see an area we wouldn't have seen. finished with a great dinner at an upmarket Cantonese restaurant. Would highly recommend Maggie as a guide.

    Liwan Food Tour
My family and I had a wonderful time with our guide Ying Ying last May. Too bad that it was raining most of the time. Nevertheless, it's an experience worth remembering. A great way to see the local parts of the city. It's hard to go around on your own in those parts. Thank you Ying Ying!:)

    Food adventure half day.
It was great as a solo traveller to be taken to the older style markets around the Pearl River. My guide Anna was well informed and I enjoyed tasting the various foods. The Yum Cha at the end was terrific. Highly recommended.

Great insight of the city and local food
I was looking to fill a jet lag day with activity to keep me awake. Visited markets, different restaurants and food stalls. Well worth it and I recommend it as a fun and interesting day out. You don't need to be an adventurous eater, something for everyone.

    Well worthwhile
4 + hours well spent. Wai led us on a food adventure that included a wide variety of food and dishes, interesting markets and historic restaurants. She generously shared her knowledge and love of Cantonese culture and made sure we were all well looked after. The pace was just right and the foods thoughtfully planned.

If you are into food it is totally worth it.
you'll get a good sense of Cantonese food and where to eat in the city.
Maggie will most likely be your guide and she is absolutely amazing. I literally bombarded her with questions for 4 hours and she had the answers to everything

My daughter and I did the eating Adventures Liwan food tour in Guangzhou last Saturday, and we could not have enjoyed it more. Our guide - Wai - was excellent and her English was spot on. It was more than just a food tasting tour, as we saw the fish markets, the pet markets, herbal markets, shopping streets and much more. We learnt a bit about the life of the locals, and tasted some amazing food. The prawns from the fish market, and then cooked at a nearby restaurant were the best that I have ever had. The double milk dessert was a favourite of mine but our lunch was pretty amazing as well. We didn't need much for dinner after our 4 hour tour, so if you are ever in Guangzhou, and have a spare 4 hours, you know what to do, and you won't be disappointed.

One of the best walking tours I’ve been on anywhere. Wai was knowledgeable and took us on an eye-opening and delicious journey through the colorful Liwan neighborhood of Guangzhou. Crocodiles, scorpions, and sand worms were only a few of the amazing items for sale. We elected to eat more typical hairy crabs, shrimp, and scallops before moving on to the best roast duck I’ve ever had, dim sum, and lotus cream pastries. This tour is a MUST for anyone visiting Guangzhou who likes to eat well; next time I’ll do the bike tour!

We were very happy that we could reschedule our tour, as I felt sick the day we planned it. Our guide Maggie even took my wife to a pharmacy for medicines for me. Thanks Maggie!
The shrimps fresh from the fish market, the dumplings, the delicious BBQ duck, the dim sums with tea at that beautiful stylish cantonese restaurant and the sweat dessert cakes afterwards, we all loved it! Meanwhile Maggie showed us all kind of typical things in town, told us a lot about the local eating culture and brought us to places we never would have known otherwise. Thank you Maggie!

Thank you for the wonderful review. It was a pleasure having you and your wife on the tour and it was no problem to reschedule due to illness. Hopefully we will see you back in China soon. regards Wai

Our group were six male business colleagues heading to Guangzhou for 4 days. We originally booked this tour online from Australia and the process was seamless. Communication was excellent and they accept Pay Pal. We were given clear instructions and a map of where to meet including the Chinese translation to show our taxi driver.
Our guide was Maggie who spoke very good english and was extremely knowledgeable about China in general and Guangzhou in particular. The tour is relaxed, includes a diverse range of foods at different types of outlets and at no stage do you feel rushed.
It is the best way to see parts of life you may not otherwise see and enjoy foods you may never have thought to try.

Do yourselves a favour and get yourself on this tour. Thanks Maggie.

Hi Steve, Thank you for your recommendation. Maggie is a true local tour guide, and proudly Cantonese. I am pleased we were able to introduce you to new foods, and show you the cultural side of Guangzhou that most business travellers don't get to see. We appreciate you taking the time to write this review, and thank you for booking direct through our website. All the best, Wai

I came across Eating Adventures while researching for food related things to do in the city and boy am I happy I got to experience the tour.

I had the opportunity to have a personalised tour around the Liwan area - arguable Guangzhou's cultural hub - which was great as our tour guide, Wai answered all the questions that I had. Even weird ones like, What's this foot? (while pointing at a dried out deer foot which apparently costs a fortune but is great for pregnant women) and "What's the best way to cook Scorpions?" (on a skewer barbecued, in case you're curious).

We had quite a lot of food on the tour including some pan-fried dim sum (my favourite part!), chinese tea, yum cha at Guangzhou Restaurant, soup out of a whole coconut at a local soup joint, chinese desserts, a cake shop (for Guangzhou's famous Wife Cake made with Wintermelon paste) as well as egg tarts (safest dessert for non-adventurous eaters). Oh! and I forgot the barbecued goose and nibbles of Mangosteen!

Given that its really hard to order at the local Chinese joints due to the language barrier, aside from the fact that you wouldn't know what to eat where, the Eating Adventures tour was a great way to get a feel of Guangzhou's food culture in the small amount of time I had.

Our tour guide was extremely friendly, spoke great english and even helped me out with other things I could do in the city! It's a must do for foodies who want to explore the Liwan area through its food.

There were only two of us doing the tour, and the pace was just perfect, like a story telling trip through the streets, customs and the many types of foods, ingredients and customs of the region.

We started at the Guangzhou Sea Food Market, with a good walk around the early morning, where things were still fairly quiet... We then purchased some fresh shrimp and went up to one of the many restaurants where they cooked our shrimp in delicious garlic. All washed down with great tea.

We then proceeded to the medicinal market, herbal market, vegetable stores and so on. We stopped to sample wonderful dishes along the way - roast duck, dim sum, dumplings, cake. Had more lovely tea along the way. I don't want to say much more as it's a such an enjoyable meander through the heart of the city, that you'd better go and discover for yourself.

Lastly I'd like to add that Maggie, our guide was the real gem in this wonderful food adventure through the backstreets of Liwan. She has a wonderful pace and manner, and shared her time and her stories with us with great generosity and kindness.

I can't recommend this enough.

Maggie - if you ever come to London, I will do the honours!

Really good day activity, especially if you are new to China and need help with the language etc. Maggie had lots of great recommendations outside of the tour also which were good. You do eat a lot so good to go hungry. Overall great experience.

Wai our very personable guide had as part of our pre-tour prep sent an email containing the meeting address written in Chinese for the taxi driver, which was very helpful.
We started walking through a local market - Portuguese tart, crispy crackling roast pork and sesame snacks were tasted at the market but we visited and encountered so much more - meeting and chatting with stallholders. all the time Wai was answering all our questions.
we then walked to a place specialising in brisket noodle soup where the owner ensured we got the best pieces of meat, coconut chicken soup, a couple of desserts all close by. Wai ordered car for a short drive to a pigeon restaurant- Now this was a highlight the little birds are so rich and tasty - I'm looking forward to the next opportunity to eat it again. Our final stop was yum cha for dim sum. we were so full and so happy from all the delicious food.
The tour is a great introduction to Cantonese food and passions and Guangzhou.

We did this food tour with Maggie back in August 2016. It was our first week in Guangzhou, since relocating for work - there was no better introduction to city than this tour. It made us feel we were getting under the skin of the city a bit, and gave us a number of places to remember to come back to.

Maggie was amazing throughout the 4 hours we were with her. She was waiting for us at the metro stop, and then throughout the day as we wandered through the fish market, and the local neighbourhoods was ready and willing to answer all of our questions. The food was amazing throughout - particularly the barbecue duck and the prawns and the fish market - although I don't think I'll be ordering the chicken feet again (note: ordering this was MY request)!

If you are in GZ, this is a must do!
