- M8887FJkristyc0 contributionsGreat Cooking ExperienceMy husband and I did a cooking class with Emika in her home in Kyoto. We had the best time making sushi, miso soup, a cucumber dish and a bitter melon dish. She grows all of her vegetables in a local garden and was very knowledgeable about the dishes. She also taught us how to make nigiri and explained all the fish we were eating. We also loved the matcha tea ceremony at the end. It was a really great experience and I would recommend it to everyone! She also gave us the sweetest origami box as a gift since I told her it was our honeymoon. Emika is the best!Written August 7, 2024
- BatureGermany0 contributionsEmika: Straight from Garden to TableEmika provides a peaceful oasis in Kyoto to learn, cook, and enjoy. After temples, shrines, and summer heat in Kyoto, Emika provides a respite to learn home cooking. Emika gathers her own fresh vegetables in the morning from her garden. For our cooking experience, we chose gyoza accompanied by seasonal salads, miso soup (with extraordinary miso paste made by Emika’s uncle), finished with matcha tea ground by a family friend. We liked getting out into a Kyoto neighborhood and the very hands on cooking experience. We appreciated Emika’s attention-to-detail and friendly welcome. Highly recommended!Written July 21, 2024

It was a lovely way to experience what local life and food culture is like in Sapporo. I recommend you skip lunch, and make sure you try Shiori’s plum saké, you won’t regret it!Written July 7, 2024

- noela6000 contributionsHuge Variety of Homestyle Japanese DishesAs I’m in Hokkaido studying Japanese, I’m looking for opportunities to learn more about Japanese culture and practice my Japanese. Shiori Ogawa’s Japanese home-style cooking class was perfect. I was introduced to a wide variety of Japanese dishes and was able to practice my Japanese. Since I was the only class participant, Shiori Ogawa was gracious use both English and Japanese. Shiori took the time to explain the conveniences of Japanese kitchens, introduce me to important Japanese ingredients, and kindly showed me the technique of sharpening a knife on a sharpening stone. Prior to my arrival, Shiori had already prepped most of the dishes. I did get to make a maki roll. Then I was treated to a feast of huge variety of delicious homemade dishes.Written June 22, 2024
- 861jadenk0 contributionsAmazing experience!Tucked away in a cute Kyoto suburb, the host was extremely nice and gave a fantastic sushi making lesson. It included homemade vegetables from her garden, homemade miso soup, homemade sushi, as well as sake, matcha, and dessert. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto.Written June 6, 2024
- jenniferkY3485QB0 contributionsA MUST experience! Our cooking class was the highlight of our trip to Kyoto! Emika was warm, kind, and an excellent chef. Being in her home gave an authentic experience unlike any “tourist activity”. Emika was wonderful in explaining the traditions of what we were preparing and most of the vegetables came from her own garden. This was a wonderful bonding experience for our family and I would recommend it to anyone. She reached out before hand to ask our options on what to make. The walk through the beautiful neighborhood to her home gave a glimpse into an authentic Kyoto lifestyle, away from the tourist atmosphere elsewhere. This is an absolute MUST for anyone with a genuine interest in local culture and food.Written June 3, 2024
- nicoledX828JC0 contributionsSuch a fun and enriching experience. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I absolutely would. We booked this at the last minute and are so grateful we invested some of our time in Kyoto in this fabulous experience. Rita is a treasure! Warm, funny, present, curious, knowledgeable, genuinely interested in connection, and a fantastic cook! A Kyoto native, her passion for Japanese cooking, culture and connecting through food was evident from start to finish. We spent 3 hours with her, beginning with touring the modest tofu shop of her friend (a 4th generation tofu maker), where we learned about the various stages of the process, the importance of various elements (like the water used) and were treated to samples of different kinds of fresh tofu, soy beans, and soy milk. Upstairs in the kitchen, Rita had a delicious and authentic meal already underway, but eased us into the cooking process with her to complete our meal together. She taught us not only about tofu, but about meal etiquette, Japanese seasonings and marinades, the aesthetic of meal presentation, and even the spiritual meanings behind some of the food customs. She also accommodated our food preferences (we’re pescatarians), which was so appreciated. We enjoyed every minute and morsel and left with a full and happy belly, printed recipes for everything we ate, gifts (including a lovely cotton kimono for our daughter - see photos), a new friend, and knowledge about the wonderful Japanese culture that is sure to enrich our experience in this fantastic country. Highly recommend.Written June 3, 2024
- S2194EKdavide0 contributionsSuperb Evening in Kyoto! This is a "hands on" cooking class! Emika kept us busy preparing a multicourse meal that was top notch. I had tried making sushi in the past, but this was far better than any previous efforts. Emika grows many of the ingredients in her own garden, adding a personal and delicious touch.Written May 26, 2024
- tamim7980 contributionsHighly recommend this activity!!!Aki's cooking class was an absolute joy from start to finish! She not only taught us how to make numerous delicious dishes, but she taught us about Japanese culture as well. My husband, kids (18 & 20 years old) and I enjoyed every minute of our time in Aki's beautiful family home. She was also able to accommodate my kids' tree nut and fish allergies. Definitely one of the top three things that we did on our two week trip to Japan! Thank you for making our 30th wedding Anniversary so memorable Aki!Written May 20, 2024

- Katie F0 contributionsIf you want an incredible authentic Japanese marketing/cooking /delicious meal experience, we highly recommend Aki.My husband and I had an incredible experience with Aki. Her instructions were clear and we met her right where she suggested. We started our tour at a local covered market street mall. She introduced us to many merchants, who greeted us with a smile. One man, who cured and sold dried bonita, was in a third generation family business of over 70 years. As we perused a contemporary market, Aki explained different pickles, fish, noodles, vegetables, sauces and so much more that are used in daily Japanese cooking. We then took a bus to Aki’s lovely home in a quiet neighborhood. We instantly felt welcomed. The table was set, sauces and stock were marinating and recipes were available to us to begin making the dishes. Aki emailed us our meal preferenes so we had an idea of what we were making. We chopped garlic, ginger, carrots, mushrooms and various Japanese root vegetables, made miso soup, fish broth, Waygu beef, vegetable salad, mainated chicken wings, eggplant and more. Aki’s English was very good, we had excellent communication. By the end of the meal we were full, happy and grateful for this incredible opportunity. We highly recommend Aki for a wonderful Japanese dining expereince.Written March 12, 2024

She used fresh vegetables from her garden, explained the process well, had a variety of delicious fresh sushi meats, and provided written English recipes for us to take. She was an overall delightful professional to spend the evening cooking together! Hearing about her family’s culture and traditions local to Kyoto and her beautiful home was an experience I will never forget! Thank you, Emika!Written February 14, 2024

My daughter and I spent a very enjoyable evening cooking, eating and having great conversations with Michiyo and her husband, Kenji. We were picked up and dropped off at the train station by our hosts and getting there from downtown Kyoto was a breeze. A special vegetarian menu was prepared for us with an explanation of the ingredients and cooking process at every step. The meal, with sake, was delicious. I have to admit that Michiyo and my daughter did all the food preparation and cooking because I so engrossed in a conversation with Kenji. When we left we forgot to take the printed recipes Michiyo had prepared for us. Michiyo kindly went out of her way to forward these to us at our next hotel in Osaka....this was so nice!! Our time spent with Michiyo and Kenji in their home was a great experience and certainly one of the highlights of our trip to Japan!!

Purchased this experience as a Valentine’s Day gift for my fiancé. We both had such a wonderful time learning to cook with Emika. She was very friendly and patient with us. We chose to upgrade to the option where Emika picked us up and brought us to her house. It probably would’ve been a bit difficult to find on our own. We highly recommend this for couples looking for a unique experience in Kyoto!

We had a wonderful experience cooking with Michiyo and enjoyed an exceptional dinner with her and her husband, Kenji. They picked us up at the train station and invited us into the comfort of their lovely home. We enjoyed learning about essential Japanese ingredients and the prominent role dashi plays in cooking! Michiyo guided us through dishes such as miso soup, Japanese omelet, beef stew, sesame spinach, grilled salmon. We were delightfully served sake with some history from Kenji. It was comfortable, enjoyable and delicious spending time with Michiyo and Kenji and we would highly recommend attending one of her classes.

Michiyosan is a lovely lady. She informed me beforehand about the exact train details and where to meet.
We learned a lot from her teaching. As our son is only 6 years old, her husband entertained him with origami.
The food was just divine 🍲😍 love love it!!! Cannot wait to try it back home.
This was a true inside of a local home cooking environment, we even all shared our views on current matters. Very pleasant encounter. Thank you very much 😊

The most wonderful immersion into Japanese culture you'll be able to find! Michiyo and her husband both spoke excellent English, so you needn't worry about a language barrier. It's obvious she's hosted lessons many times, as our hostess had packets of information for us including recipes for each dish we made and information that will perfect these dishes when we make them at home. They also gave us treat bags of Japanese desserts and some instant dashi stock mix for us to take home. Michiyo seemed to know quite a lot about the soy sauce types and ingredients available overseas (at least in America) and ways we could adjust our recipes for cooking at home, and conversing with her and her husband while cooking, during supper, and after the meal answered a lot of questions I had (and many that I didn't know I had) about Japanese cuisine and culture.
I tend to research before traveling, and my research gave me questions about the language, certain aspects of the culture especially in the Kyoto area, and Kyoto obanzai cooking. If you visit a ryokan (maybe in the Gion district if you're lucky!), you'll have some of the same dishes you'll make here and many more (most of which will be more exotic than these milder dishes), so this is a very good stepping stone to the variety of dishes you'll find there that may be a bit less typical for the American or European taste buds.
It's hard to choose a favorite thing about this particular course - the instructions to get to our meeting point were perfect, we learned so much about obanzai cooking and in a way that we can remember it when we cook the dishes ourselves, the friendly conversation we had during the evening brought a lot of joy to the experience. Perhaps my favorite part was getting to learn about Japanese culture from people who could and would explain things to us - learning about how words are used in Japan (including the structure of their sentences), hearing about the Japanese perspective of travel and work outside of Japan, seeing what houses look like in the suburbs of large cities.
When Michiyo and her husband open their home to you, you'll feel overwhelmed by their kind hearts and full of excitement because of their eagerness to share their piece of Japan with you. The more you research any part of your trip to Japan, the more you'll get out of this lesson. Enjoy your time in Japan, and enjoy eating well!

We enjoyed such a delightful evening with Michiyo and Kenji, who welcomed us into their home to cook and eat with them. Michiyo had prepped Dashi but told us how to make it and gave us each a packet of instant to take home with us. We made 5 dishes including traditional Japanese omelette, miso soup, a spinach sesame salad, salmon, and beef stew. Michiyo sent us home with all of the recipes so we can recreate the meal at home. Being our first time in Japan, having this private experience was a fantastic introduction to “real life” and authentic food, not just what tourists experience in Kyoto.

We had a great time learning Japanese home cooking with Michiyo. She was a patient teacher and demonstrated every step clearly. We made 5 dishes and ate together with her husband at her house. The food was delicious and we enjoyed our conversation over dinner as well. We will definitely make the dishes at home, and I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in Japanese cuisine and culture!

What an amazing experience! Michiyo-san and her husband are delightful, some of the nicest people you could ever meet. We learned about Japanese seasoning techniques, and the dishes were cooked with ingredients we can find at home. They even gave us printed recipes so we can try at home. Regardless of whether or not you know any Japanese, I would recommend this class to anyone who is at all curious about traditional Japanese cuisine!

From start to finish this experience was wonderful. Initially we were a little uncertain of how things would be, but all directions from Michiyo were easy to follow so we relaxed once the cooking began.
We were making a traditional Japanese evening meal - with 5 courses. Michiyo spoke excellent English and had us making miso, special omlette, marinated salmon, beef 'stew', spinach with sesame seeds and sticky rice.
Then we three sat down, with her husband, to eat what we had made. It was delicious and they were both extremely friendly and easy to chat to. We washed it all down with sake and beer - really enjoyable.
In fact we both decided that it had been one of the highlights of our trip to Japan and would certainly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Japanese cooking mixed with an insight into a Japanese family's way of life.
Wonderful - thank you Michiyo!
