Takayama is a beautiful town but we realized soon when it is getting close to 8 pm the options for night experiences get limited. Luckily we stumbled in the streets at night time on this wonderful little theater in the heart of Takayama. We heard about this before but were unsuccessful in buying tickets online but when we walked in we were welcomed with open arms. We felt like VIPs. The staff made sure that we were looked after before the start of the show. Some great memories were made in traditional Japanese clothing and I even was allowed to try myself on the drums. It was beautiful. The evening was incredible. The passion and discipline of the artists on stage was so inviting. There was even some scenes where me and my husband were able to be included into the night festivities. I would recommend this to anyone trying to find a great change of scenery when visiting Takayama. Please feel free to walk in and purchase the tickets. It’s a night to remember.

We had a fantastic time at Dekonaru-Za. We went on a weeknight, so it was less busy but we felt like we were in a room full of people as the performers were so energetic and engaging. We loved the story line, the dancing, the folding fan lesson and the drums! Absolutely not to be missed in Takayama. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

My boyfriend and I were visiting Takayama and decided to go to the show as we hadn’t seen the Japanese drums before. The performance was amazing, so well practiced and a good mix of different Japanese arts including swords, dance and drums. The show was very interactive with the audience and parts of the performance was narrated in both English and Japanese which was great as our Japanese is very basic. I would highly recommend to all!

Thanks to the performers at Dekonaru-za, me and my wife had the best experience in Japan and carry the fondest memories of the evening back to India. We were the only two members in the audience, but that did not wane the enthusiasm of the performers who put in their very best in manifesting their passion to entertain us. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you are in Takayama and very much value for money.

We made reservations for the early performance before we came to Japan so we were quite surprised that we were the only 2 guests at the show. We offered to return later but the friendly team were happy to go ahead even with such a small audience.

The show lasts about 50 minutes and includes a fan dance, a lion dance, a fox dance and some audience participation with fans. But the real attraction was the drumming which was amazing and one of the highlights of our visit to Japan. The performers were so energetic and we were absolutely mesmerized by their drum-playing skills and stage presence.

We couldn’t believe that the show wasn’t packed out and we’d urge anyone visiting Takayama to consider going as we thought it was a memorable show that deserves to be packed out for every performance. Please don’t miss out!

Thank you for coming far away. It is hard to tell their existence, and it is still struggling to attract customers. Help people like you so that as many customers as possible can watch and enjoy it. I will do my best every day. I am really happy to receive a high evaluation.

The performance was truly an amazing show of Hida Culture. It was close-up and personal and despite having less than 10 people in the audience, the performers were so dedicated and committed to putting up a performance to remember. My two kids 8 and 11 were enthralled by the costumes and simple yet powerful stage effects. The music was beautiful, haunting and invigorating. I must commend the talent of each performer. The performance was preceeded by an introduction to Hida folk song and dance and the significance of the fan in Japanese culture. It was informative and interactive and the performers were very friendly and open with the audience and my kids had a blast. We watched the 530 performance and it lasted for about an hour. After the performance there was opportunity to take photos with the perfomers, and a corner to dress up and snap pictures with props. We couldn't stop talking about it at dinner. I think everyone coming to Takayama should take the opportunity to enjoy such an amazing performance for all ages.

It was just my husband and I watching the show, but despite being only the two of us, they gave us an amazing show and performed with the same passion as if they had a full house.

They had a pamphlet with the story in English as well, so you know what is going on through the different scenes. The show had an interactive part, also translated in English. So, don't be afraid of going there and feeling lost if you don't know Japanese.

If you arrive early enough, they let you try on a kimono for free and take pictures. The staff even tried to do my hair and everything. They were incredibly friendly and professional. The venue has excellent lighting and acoustics, and you could really feel the drums. Of all the things we visited in Takayama, this was by far the best.

Thank you very much for coming from far away. We seem happy and we are happy. The kimono looked very good too. Although there are still a few audiences, I will do my best to increase the number of people who can enjoy like you. Thank you for your high evaluation.

We saw the Dekonaru-za show to fill some time between arriving by bus and having dinner in Takayama. We were so glad we did. The show was great and covered singing, dancing, some audience interaction learning some fan routines, a lion dance, and the highlight for me: Japanese flute and drums, which were amazing.
Great fun and great value.
