      Tenryo Brewery
      Stop: 2 hours
*In April 2023, we have amended the tour length from 1.5 to 2 hours, which makes price difference. The Hida region is well known as one of the best places to make sake in Japan since we have all 3 key factors for brewing: water, rice and coldness. Tenryo Sake Brewery started in Edo period (17C) and now it is representative of sake breweries in this region. They have won lots of awards not only in Japan, but in overseas and it is served in some high-class Japanese-style restaurants. At the brewery, you will see the inside to know more about ingredients of sake and the brewing process step by step. After the special experience, you will enjoy Tenryo’s sake. Depending on the season, they will offer you their best sake and you can find your favorite one. You can also understand the difference of flavors and how to drink sake.

Fun bike tour through scenic countryside
We had a great time on the 6-hour Maze e-bike tour with Dai in early November. Our route took us through the Hida-Hagiwara town centre, then up the mountains towards Maze village, and the pedal-assist function on the Panasonic e-bikes used on this tour made the uphill portions a breeze and super fun. We really appreciated Dai’s many conversations with our small group throughout the tour, especially his candid sharing about how he moved on from busy Tokyo city life to the countryside. Tour highlights for us were: our bento lunches, thoughtfully prepared using local ingredients by one of the ladies from the village (she even handwrote a menu so that Dai could explain to us what we were having that day); getting to see and touch the crystal blue waters of the Maze River; stopping by a roadside mountain spring to refill our water bottles; seeing pockets of autumn colours on the surrounding hills and mountainsides. We would recommend this to anyone who enjoys cycling!

Winding down at the end of our travels
We had a great time on this tour and Dai was an excellent guide. After visiting all of the city hotspots, visiting Takayama and cruising through the countryside on this cycle tour was a really relaxing way to end our trip. We got to see see the contrast between the city and rural areas, and the packed lunch was one of the best we had!

      Breathtaking scenery and fantastic guide
We had the most wonderful time with our guide Dai, discovering the Hida mountainous countryside, local shires and enjoyed a beautiful prepared Japanese lunch. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for showing us breathtaking scenery off the tourist track with vibrant autumn colours. One of our favourite days on our honeymoon🍁

      Great biking tour
We had a great time biking the rural villages surrounding Hida with Dai. The scenery, lunch (bento box made by a friend of Dai) and exercise made for a day we will cherish for a long time. Thank you Dai and we wish you every success with your biking tours.

      Great small group tour...highly recommend
Thoroughly enjoyed our half day cycling tour in Hida. Far from any other tourists but easily accessible from Takayama. Very professional from the booking process, the guiding and the quality and standard of the assisted E bikes. Highly recommend and great to support a small, local business!

      Gorgeous cycling tour
Dai was an awesome cycling guide. Our tour took us over some beautiful wooded trails, through agricultural areas & the nearby city. Dai explained about the history, industry, natural resources & culture of the region. He was justifiably very proud of the area. He was fun & engaging & very solicitous of our bike riding. The e-bikes he provided were great - easy to learn & handle, & went up the steep hills easily. The half-day tour was perfect for us, & I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys cycling.

      A truly authentic experience!
My husband and I loved this tour. E-bikes were great, new and very easy to use. It was so much fun! We had a very small group, with only two of us and an another couple from New Zealand. We saw beautiful places that only a local like Dai would know. It was also a wonderful opportunity to ask him questions about Japan and hear his opinions and thoughts on many things. We spent 2 weeks in Japan and this tour was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. If you would like to see a truly authentic side of Japan, this tour is for you! :)

      Amazing day at the countryside!
It was really nice to spend the day in the countryside! Even if you are not super fit, the electric bike will make it super easy. It was a rainy day but that didnt stop us from having an amazing experience! Would definitely repeat!

      Unique and fantastic
This is the perfect bicycle tour for anyone with a love of nature, peace and tranquility mixed with a bit of exercise. After a couple of weeks touring the cities of Japan this adventure was exactly what our family needed. Me, my wife and daughters aged 14 & 16 toured through the countryside with Dai who is very kind and informative on many subjects. This tour is a product of Dai’s passion for nature and the local countryside. ‘Commercial’ it is not. Just pedal along and enjoy the wonders of nature, watch the breeze across the rice fields and finishing with a nice river soak. Truly memorable.

      Lovely day with Dai!
Dai, thank you so much for showing us around in Hida-Hagiwara! Truly enjoyed the tour: its so nice to be away of the hustling and bustling of the bigger cities and really feel the countryside of the Japan. It was a good day filled with activity, a lot of extra facts on Japan during the tour, and a very good lunch in a local restaurant! Thanks for letting me ask you anything! best, Sanne

A day away from the crowds.
This was a great way to see a little slice of hidden Japan in a village that other tourists just pass by. The joining point was easy to get to on the train from Takayama, and the cycling through the rural areas was enjoyable. Lunch was amazing and made using some local ingredients. While you still need to pedal, the ebike made things much easier. Dai has done this before so knows when to stop and rest. I would reccomend this tour to anyone who likes cycling and wants a day away from the crowds.

This Sake tour was an easy train ride from Takayama. The tour guide was there to great us at the station and took us to a local Temple and one of Japan's earliest roads on our way to the Sake tour. Even outside of the Sake production season, the factory was still open to show us the different equipment and rice's that were used. The tour concluded with a tasting or many different Sakes from traditional to flavored. Sake cups were provided with purchase. A great selection of Sake was available and I learned a lot!

Dear Ashley, Thanks for coming and sharing your memory with us during the local sake tour. I am so glad to hear that you liked the experience so much. Surely, the sake you had and bought there was one of the best in Japan. As I told you, we have plenty of clear water from mountain, which enables us to make great rice. Hope you will come back to Japan one day soon. Thank you so much again. Warm Regards, Dai

It took a full day of travel to get to Takayama, but this tour was one of the main drawcards and I had high expectations. It didn't disappoint. Dai was friendly and personable, and made us feel warmly welcomed. The tour was small and intimate. Being in a small rural town, it felt all the more special. I'm grateful I had the chance to peek into a sake brewery and to be introduced to the intricacies of sake brewing.

The sake tasting at the end was generous, and I discovered wonderful new tastes in the various types of sake we tried. Luckily there's a shop on-site for you to take home your favourite sake!

Dear Angela, Thank you so much for posting a wonderful review of local sake experience. You seemed to be keen on Japanese culture especially on sake. Honored to show you around the sake brewery. As I told you during the tour, flavor of sake depends on main ingredients such as rice and water. So each region has its own flavor. Next time you visit Japan, you should try some of other sake bottles! Hope to see you again one day. Warm Regards, Dai

Lovely tour in a not touristic place not far from Takayama. The sake brewery is family run so small and genuine with a great atmosphere. It was great to find out more about sake and taste it. Thanks to Dai for great explanations!

Dear Elena, Thanks for coming in the last minute to the sake brewery tour in the non-touristy part of Hida region. It was a great time with you and glad to show you around the area, focusing on the story about sake. It might be difficult to find the best quality sake in your place like the one you had there now but sake is spreading out the world with a big promotion. Someday, you will find the Tenryo sake at the shop nearby your home. Thank you so much again, take care always. Warm Regards, Dai

Dai is a very good tour guide. He introduced to us on the history of Hida and the production process of Sake clearly and in details. Also, the staff from 天領 is also nice and very willing to answer our question. Lastly, I really appreciated that I can try different kind of Sake at the end which further enhance our undertsanding on Sake prodcution. This tour is definitely one of our memoriable experiences in this trip. Really recommend!

Dai is a fun and knowledgeable tour guide, he knows his sake well. I asked him all kinds of questions since I am very curious about the sake process and he was able to answer all with clarity and panaché!

Tenryo brewery has a rich history and goes about its work in a heartfelt manner. There's rooms with large barrels storing the sake and steamers and washers for the rice. They have kept up with modern processes and are one of the few to produce sake in the warm climates when it's primarily a cold weather production process.

Sake tasting was fun as well and we got to try out some Doburoku and Muroka as well (unfiltered, unpasteurized, a stronger taste). Some of them were smooth as water and a pleasure to get thru

Dear Bruce, Thank you so much for a great review about the local sake tour. I was also happy to show you the details of sake in the real factory. As you thought during the tour, sake is very unique to make. Water, rice and Koji, those ingredients dramatically change the taste of sake, and there is no bottle of sake that has same flavor with another one. It might not be easy to get sake bottle in Australia (costs too much I guess) so now you are really missing the taste. Hope you will come back to Japan to find another favorite bottle and buy tons of sake here. Warm Regards, Dai

My partner & I went on this tour and loved every moment of it.
Didn't expect to get to sample so many different types of sake at the end and I must admit I was quite toasted by the end of it.

Picked up both the mid tier bottle & premium bottle for the trip home and once everything is sorted again I plan to return to get more.

My daughter and I met Daisuke and a customer by chance at the train station as it was a last minute trip and we joined them. We began by a visit of a shrine, then the brewery. I have already visited a brewery but the highlight here was the detailed explanation of the different versions of sake. I can now drink knowledgeably ! And Daisuke is a passionate and friendly ambassador for this art. Patrick (Tahiti).

Dear Patrick, Thank you so much for such a great comment about our sake experience. Literally, it was a lucky coincidence to meet you, and a wonderful day as well. Nice talking with you. There are hundreds or thousands sake breweries in Japan but the one we visited is extraordinary with no exaggeration. They are always welcoming and open for any visitors to show their factory. Besides, they offered you a lot of different kinds of sake for tasting. Hope you like Japanese sake much more and taste it in your home too. See you again, we will always welcome you coming back here. Warm Regards, Daisuke

This tour is a must if you are interested in sake. Our guide Dai was very friendly and knowledgeable. I have learned so much about the different grades of sake and the brewing process. Sake breweries are very closely guarded places and this tour offered a rare glimpse inside one. The brewery is not big and they do a lot of things by hand which makes it more interesting.

Masa-san from the brewery who took us around was very friendly. The owner who stays on the premises also came and greet us before the tour. Highly recommended tour and throughly enjoyable.

The town is about an hour outside of Takayama so if is a full afternoon outing. However take note that sake is only brewed in the colder winter seasons. So the brewery might be quiet in the summer.

Dear Joaquim, Thanks for coming and posting a great review one the sake experience in a small country town. It was nice seeing you during your memorable trip in Japan. The questions you shoot us were really good. Some of those were hard to answer but appreciated you loved the Japanese sake so much. As you mention, not so many breweries show inside for visitors to keep it secret, and the best season to see a factory must be winter. Appreciate your kindness to share your tips for other travelers to join the tour. Hope to see you again one day. Warm Regards, Daisuke

I've been to the Hida region a couple of times but always wanted to explore the surrounding towns. Been on the lookout for things to do and came across this site. So glad I ended up booking this tour. Dai-san was an amazing host who did his research and was able to explain and guide us through the town. You could tell he had a good relationship with the people and places that were part of this tour. The food was amazing but more importantly the explanation behind it. The miso was the highlight for me as the taste was not your typical miso you get at a grocery store. It had a lot more depth and was even paired with toast during our visit. It was also educational to see how it was made, something we weren't aware of despite eating it on a regular basis. All in all an excellent trip and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to venture off the tourist track. We will be back for more!

Dear Chris, Thank you so much for joining us and writing a fantastic review on the local town walking tour. I also had a really good time with you and your mom. To my surprise, your knowledge about Japan was outstanding. You said you had been here for couple times but you know better than ordinary Japanese people. It was my pleasure to take you to the small town of Hida and share some local stories you have never heard, especially about food. The miso brewery always does a good job. As I said during the tour, I make miso soup with that miso brewed there since it is extraordinary, much better than any other miso available in Japan. Though it was just 3 hours walking tour, the moment spent with you was so memorable. Hope you will be back to Takayama area in the near future and visit us again. Thanks a lot! Warm Regards, Daisuke
