    Short and sweet
This show lasts about 1 .5 hours and the program includes 12 scenes that represent life for the farmers in Vietnam. The puppet masters stand behind a screen in knee deep cold water and the puppets are on the end of long poles that are extended under the screen. Some scenes were hard to understand while others were quite funny.

    Surprisingly very good!
We visited here and paid I think 300,000 each for a ticket. The show last about 45-50 minutes. It is in Vietnamese but each story is slightly different along the way and most of the time you can follow what is going on! The show itself is very clever and the puppeteers are very talented. The musicians and voices are also very good! It makes a change from your usual SE Asian activities so I would recommend giving this activity a go one evening!

Interesting insight in the vietnamese culture
The water puppet show contains many small acts and each displayes a part of the vietnamese culture. The puppets were really beautiful and the show was lovely. It was totally worth the money and an amusing show.

    Must go and see!!
Was raining ad I went here thinking that was a tourist trap. I made a big mistake. it is a puppet show on the water where the authenticity and simplicity of the Vietnamese people is exalted overbearingly. A simple but at the same time articulated show that manages to excite. I highly recommend it in the evening version.

    Delightfully unique
I didn’t know what to expect when we went to see the water puppets. It was a marvelous show that depicted the themes and mythology of the Vietnamese culture. The skill of the puppet handlers to synchronize the movements was impressive.

    Sublime! Recommended for all ages
I had never attended a Water Puppet Show, and this one was delightful indeed! You will enjoy it regardless of understanding the short dialogues, because what matters is the choreography mostly, and nevertheless, there is an english narrator at the beginning of each act. If you are travelling with kids, don't hesitate to assist with them! I suggest wearing winter clothes if depending of the season, as the theatre has a roof but is not indoors.

This is like a water version of a Punch and Judy show. Don't take it seriously and you will totally enjoy.
This is just a short show 45 minutes and is ideal. Tells you a list of short stories through the water puppets. Most is quite amusing and is colourful and really well done. We are really happy we went along and enjoyed it

    Delightful, just delightful.
What a smashing hour out from the usual tourist rushing and visiting. Worth leaving the old town, an easy walk. 80,000d and only 13 of us in the audience

    Enjoyable
Water puppetry is a traditional art form in Vietnam. In the show we can see Vietnamese traditions by means of puppets like the life of a Vietnamese farmer cultivating, catching fishes etc.., and community entertainment like dragon dancing or historical legends. The show is performed in a pool of water as the stage for puppets. It is very interesting and enjoyable. The show is only for 30 minutes. The tickets for this show costs VND 80000 for adults and 40000 VND for children. A must see show.

A little slow for older children
I took our 7 year old daughter to this. She asked to leave about 10 mins before the end, but I enjoyed it. I think she would have enjoyed it more when she was younger. There were a few very bored looking teenagers too. That said, I personally found it charming. The English language intros are very helpful - though I’m sure much nuance is lost in not actually understanding the words. One of the earliest little sequences was a bit like a Vietnamese Punch & Judy is which the woman was quite inexplicably had her breasts on show. I couldn’t fathom why. Was quite amusing. All in all, a sweet show. About 15 mins too long. For the money, it felt very reasonable value. It’s on a very busy crossroads. The map they gave us must not be to scale. It took us 30 mins to walk from the Japanese bridge. Not a nice walk with a child, as it was dusk and the pavements were all parked up with motorcycles - so we were constantly stepping out onto a busty road, at what seemed to be rush hour. Plenty of seats. Was only about a third occupied. Clean toilets on site.

Unique & skilful performance found only in Vietnam
Would highly recommend that everyone visiting Vietnam watches a water puppet performance at least once. Entertaining for both children and adults despite being delivered in the Vietnamese language-no problem following the storyline. Good exposure to Vietnamese culture at an affordable price. Do note that it is closed on Wednesdays.

A fun show anyone can enjoy (and the price is right)
The Hoi An Water Puppet Theater it at the edge of the Old Town, and easy to walk to. We enjoyed a show on a Friday and it wasn't particularly busy, we got there 15 minutes before the show and got our tickets and seats no problem. The cost is 80,000 for adults, which is more than fair. The show is just under an hour. You get a program in several languages when you enter (English is one of them) that tells you about the show. It's a bunch of different skits with the puppets, about farmers, catching fish, fairies, and village life (mostly). The sound system announces the up-coming skit in English to give you some context, but the skits are easy to understand without knowing any Vietnamese (for example, anyone can relate to a wily fish outsmarting a fisherman). The puppets are colorful and fun, there are dragons, snakes, farmers, children, cats, and more. The theater is open-air, but it's covered so if it rained you wouldn't get soaked, but this is no indoor cushy spot - hard chairs aren't super comfy but hey, the show's pretty short. Taking photos or video is no problem here. Shows start at 6:30pm most days of the week. If you're in Hoi An for at least 2 days, you're guaranteed to be able to see this show. Well worth it! Hey - if you found this review helpful, give it a thumbs up so others can find it. Thanks!

Very cool! Unique show to watch
The water puppet show was fantastic, more geared at families but we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless! There are several short stories/performances across 45 minutes and the show is done very skillfully by local puppeteers. Would be great for kids.

I'd heard of the Vietnamese culture of water puppets. From a Western perspective the whole thing makes no sense and one is expecting a very Punch & Judy. But no, it's a recreation of Vietnamese traditional village tales through the medium of puppets seemingly floating on the water and interweaving with other puppet characters in the water. For a while I focused on the How it was done, but then just relaxed into it and enjoyed the show. They do explain things very well with details of the stories being portrayed. In some ways it's more like ballet than puppetry. And it is very cheap too - buy your tickets from the kiosks which charge you for your entry into the old town. All over inside an hour and I recommend getting a taxi out there and then walking back into town.

I had hear about this unique Vietnamese entertainment and it is well worth seeing. It is so clever and very entertaining. It gives an insight in the culture and the imagination that goes into the presentation is great. There is no problem understanding as there is an English voice advising what is coming so you get an idea of what to expect. It is approximately an hour of fun suitable for all ages.
