What to expect
Following hotel pickup in Hoi An Ancient Town by minivan, you'll receive a safety briefing along with a bicycle and helmet. Then follow your guide on a bike tour of Phuoc Hai fishing village where you'll observe the daily life of local fisherman and their families. Next, board a ferry for the Duy Hai village fish market and watch fishing boats returning with their catch of the day. Here, your guide will purchase fresh seafood for a later lunch. Then visit a fish sauce factory and learn about the production of nuoc mam, followed by refreshments at a local cafe.  Returning to Phuoc Hai by boat, you can join fishermen who employ traditional fishing nets. Then learn to paddle a tightly woven bamboo basket boat, known locally as thung chai, and take a spin around the freshwater coconut forest.  Continuing on to Cam Thanh, get a firsthand look at the manual process of traditional rice farming—including raking, transplanting, sowing, grinding, and pounding—and learn how water buffalos are used to plow the fields. After lunch with a family, you'll return to your hotel by minivan.

Discover fishing village and rice farm
Feb 2020 • Friends
Fabulous day, loads of new experiences - cycled through the villages, visited fishing market; throwing nets for fishing; pulling in the large square nets on a frame; paddling circular bamboo boats; riding a water buffalo; ploughing the paddy field; sewing the rice and doing everything in the field through to cooking our rice pancakes - brilliant. Fab guide (Viet), spoke good english and was very knowledgable. Met some lovely locals. Well paced day - really loved it.

A must do in Hoi An
Jan 2020 • Family
Our family just did the DISCOVER FISHING VILLAGE & RICE PADDY TOUR. This was by far the best tour that we did during our 2 week holiday in Viet Nam. Our guide, Helen, was so energetic and enthusiastic, doing everything she could to make our experience unforgettable. We loved meeting her mum at the local market and visiting her village. The 60+ photos and videos that she sent to us afterwards were an incredible bonus. All of the people we met on the tour were so welcoming, patient with our family, and seemed to really genuinely enjoy their time with us. Despite the early start our family stayed enthralled for the entire 7 hours and were sad when the tour finished. We all had an incredible day and finished the day with sore tummy’s from laughing so much. An exceptional tour and we can not recommend this highly enough and it more than deserves a five star rating. A huge thank you to Helen and her team.

Great eco-tourism experience
May 2019 • Couples
We were taught some vegetable farming skills, were welcomed into people's homes, rode between rice fields (on bikes, and for those unable to ride bikes, on the back of motorbikes), met a buffalo owner, and rode on his water buffalo, travelled up river by boat, watched fisher people casting their nets from two small boats, travelled up a small inlet in basket boats/coracles, were taught how to cast nets from shore and pull up a huge set net. On board the boat or on land, we were well looked after, especially by Viet, who explained things to us in excellent English, and had a very welcoming and friendly manner. We thoroughly recommend this tour and hope you get Viet looking after you like we did.

We didn't expect too much but it was definitely one of the best tour we've ever joined. We enjoyed the buffalo riding and the spinning basket boat. Viet, our tour guide is caring and entertaining. He speaks fluent English.
We definitely recommend this tour to anyone who is coming to Hoi An.

Excellent and Educational Eco-Tourism Experience
Sep 2018 • Family
I wanted my kids to learn about culture, history, farming and how rural locals live in a Vietnam. Our tour with Jack Tran fulfilled all my expectations and more through their engaging activities and extremely knowledgable guides. My kids are 9 and 11 so the hands-on experiences were not only educational for them but a whole lot of fun. They were able to learn about the whole cycle of rice farming from beginning to end by getting their hands and feet dirty. At the end they were able to also taste the fruits of their labor as they were served an amazing meal that included items they picked out at the local market and also cooked themselves. I felt like a good mom because I was able to give them this experience and I hope to find more like it in the future. When we return to Hoi An we will definitely sign-up for more Jack Tran tours. Special thanks to our guide Jenny and the rest of the hardworking team that was so attentive and kind. You are wonderful people and we are so grateful to have met you.

We had a blast with Lily on our fishing and rice paddy tour - we had some awesome guides throughout our trip to Vietnam, and our whole family group of 7 is in unanimous agreement that Lily was one of the best guides we had on our trip. Lily picked us up from our hotel at 6am and took us on a fleet of motorcycle taxis to a fascinating local fishing market where she showed us a huge variety of seafood (she grew up in a fishing village nearby and knows absolutely everything there is to know about fish) and bought some seafood and other items, like freshly prepared rice noodles, vegetables, and fruits, for our lunch. We visited a local nuoc mam (fish sauce) producer where we learned how fish sauce is made in giant vats and distilled for use. We then rode through the village to a local farmer/fisherman's house where they served us a delicious breakfast and showed us around their farm. We love the fact that Jack Tran's company provides employment and support to the local people in this farming and fishing area - the house we visited was built with the financial and labor assistance of Australian visitors and the farmer/fisherman and his family gets some support from the company as well for their participation in these tours. We were really impressed by his work ethic and resilience - he sustained an arm injury in the war, yet fishes, rows, and farms as though he was never injured. He was so friendly, as was his wife and one of his sons who was affected by Agent Orange - they welcomed us into their home and we really enjoyed hearing his story. We then went to a beach, where we learned how to draw up the large suspended fishing nets in the river using a wheel-like apparatus (hard work!) and were amazed to catch a few fish, including some blowfish, which delighted my kids. We then took a larger boat to an area with some fishermen, who showed us how to cast a fishing net, and to water coconut-lined waterways, where they showed us how they spin and rock the basket boats, then we floated through the coconut waterways, seeing some crabs and snails - Lily and her crew folded the water coconut leaves into jewelry, glasses, headdresses, and amazing crickets and floating birds and fish - my kids were totally amazed by what they could make! We transitioned to the rice farming portion of the day - it is a little contrived to be extremely picturesque, with rice set up to grow in its various stages and a little bridge behind the water buffalo for beautiful photos, but wonderful. We rode the buffalos, learned how to plow the earth, and went through the entire rice growing process in great detail, from sowing the rice seedlings, thinning and transplanting them, using a scythe to cut them, threshing and husking the rice grains, and separating them out. We eat rice nearly every day and it was amazing to see the whole process and understand what hard labor it is to make great rice - we will never look at a grain of rice the same way again! The lunch was amazing - local fish and banh xeo made from local rice powder. It was one of our favorite days in Vietnam (out of many unbelievably wonderful days!) - Lily is an outstanding, spicy, hilarious guide who really understands customer service well, and Jack Tran tours is a well-oiled, well-organized machine. We were afraid it would be touristy after seeing the giant Jack Tran billboards on the way into town, but it really wasn't - we only saw a couple of other tourists finishing their water buffalo experience at the rice farm, no others throughout the whole day, and felt that we learned a lot from actual fishermen and rice farmers, which is exactly what we wanted.
