About
Everyone loves coffee. But how is it grown and processed? Tanzania is exporting coffee and many people are working with it so you can enjoy it. On our trip you will learn the long journey of the coffee from seed to cup. The farm delivering coffee to us is all organic and Fairtrade. Why is that important? Usually the farmers gets a low payment for the coffee. Sometimes its not enough to get their children to school. We pay the farmers 3 times the normal price. The coffee trees are not sprayed with any chemicals making it safer for the farmer and more healthy for us drinking the end product. Dont miss this opportunity to learn about coffee.
This trip includes 2 nights at our guesthouse in the same village as the coffee is produced. You are actually sleeping on a coffee farm! Enjoy our home made breakfast and dinner made by our chef.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Vera S0 contributionsGreat Experience!Had a great tour through the village and learnt about the local community! Then we saw the agricultural fields and the coffee plantation. We also learnt a lot about how a cup of coffee is produced. Richard, our guide, explained everything very well and was very communicative.Written September 16, 2024
- 505frasers0 contributionsAwesome experienceOverall - this was fantastic. Our guide Samuel was wonderful. He took us through his hillside village of 7000 people. He showed us butcher shops, several churches, stores, the courthouse, his home, gardens, family. He was very knowledgable and tried very hard to teach us about his culture, way of life, etc. We walked about 4.2 miles. Easy walk. Special lunch and coffee making factory tour. Very glad we did this. Fun, educational, good exercise. 😀😀Written August 20, 2023
- EKPa190 contributionsCoffee farming 101We started with a tour of a Lutheran church built in the 1800's by Germans. It was simple and functional and interesting and beautiful. The walk from the church to the coffee farm was somewhat uphill on a dirt lane. Be prepared if it's a hot, dry day. The coffee farmer took us around his farm and educated us on every step involved in coffee farming. We hiked down a path through trees that was uneven. Well worth it but be prepared for a hike. We passed several villagers' homes to arrive at a beautiful home of a Scandinavian woman and her African husband where we were served a family-style lunch of delicious local dishes. It was way more than any of us could eat. We were able to buy coffee and handmade items. It was a great way to learn and see the local culture.Written March 6, 2023
- mk3105710 contributionsCreative way to learn about coffee plantation in ArushaWe thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Dickson our guide was very thorough in his explanation and descriptions. We had a long walk through the village and had a beautiful lunch at the end. We met the farmer who walked us through his plantation and explained how they farmer without using chemicals. Very impressive.Written October 22, 2022

- melissadU1031FL0 contributionsIncredible cultural experience!!!We loved the coffee walk, especially our wonderful guide Samwel! It was a lovely experience - interesting, educational and fun! Samwel was an amazing host, spending time taking us through the village, explaining some local customs, touring the farm and coffee factory. We enjoyed a delicious lunch and the company and conversation were fantastic. (Covid update - Samwel is vaccinated and wore a mask the entire car ride so we all felt very safe)Written August 21, 2021
- karinmC1078WG0 contributionsBean to cupOn February 24 we did the coffee tour with lunch with 4 people. Samwel was our excellent guide. We started in the village. Visited the church, local court and walked through the coffee farms. Samwel explained a lot about the process of growing coffee, but also about the local customs. We enjoyed a lot. After the walk we had a delicious lunch and of course tasted the various coffees. Last we visited the factory. We had a very nice day!Written February 24, 2021
- Gill W0 contributionsA fascinating insight into village lifeOur guide Samwel was superb. Fluent in English, German and Norwegian as well as his native Swahili and Meru, he is very well informed and shares what he knows in a really accessible way. It was such a pleasure to meet his family and so interesting to learn about the coffee-making process from seedling to cup. Lunch afterwards was absolutely delicious and we were delighted to meet Kahawa owner Beate and her two teenage sons. We look forward to grinding our beans and drinking our coffee when we are back home in London!Written January 18, 2020
- DanielB172990 contributionsCoffee Plantage MateruniWe booked a trip from Arusha directly to the coffee plantage in mataruni and it was an amazing day! Our driver Nuru did a great job and we can really recommend him. Asante!Written July 23, 2019
- Ron Z0 contributionsFirst day in ArushaWent on the tour with friends. Very interesting in how coffee beans go from "farm to table" Sampled a few different flavors along with some cake. We were given some samples to take home which i have tried them all. Very good, thank you. Village was cool to walk around and the little gift shop has some local items that are not expensive. Our guide was excellent. Do the tour.Written July 11, 2019
- Michelle O0 contributionsGreat tour!We came to Arusha a day before our main safari started to go on this excursion and it was everything we hoped it would be! the slight walk/hike through the village and the coffee plantation was educational, not just about coffee, but also about the culture. The traditional meal was exceptionally prepared and delivered. They also have a guest house where you can stay at Kahawa. Very cool!Written July 30, 2018
- Bessie1340 contributionsVery informative tour! I would highly recommendVery last minute tour on our part, and we were so glad it all worked out! Our tour guide, Emmanuel, was a wonderful host and guide. We started at a village which was stunning scenery - lush mountains, vibrantly coloured buildings, and a beautiful church. We hiked for about 30 minutes through the plantations and jungle, stopping to look at flowers & plants. Emmanuel was highly knowledgeable about the local flora. He even spotted a chameleon and we took the opportunity to take lots of photos! We met a local coffee farmer who took us on a tour of his plantation and explained in detail each step on producing that precious cup. We sure appreciated our cup of coffee after!! We finished with a delicious Tanzanian meal and purchased some of the cooperatives coffee. We so enjoyed our day and would recommend for anyone interested in a real coffee tour!Written October 25, 2017
- reeseprc0 contributionsFantastic tour, great vegan foodWe booked this tour on a whim due to having a free day in Arusha after our safari trip and we're so glad we did. It's so much more than a "coffee tour". We saw the local school, walked through the village, sampled local banana beer and banana wine, and of course saw the coffee process from plant to brew. Amani was the best guide, he knew about all the plants we saw, the people and since he grew up there he knew the village inside and out. The lunch provided was one of the best vegan meals we had during our 2 week trip to Tanzania. We were really blown away. Of course the coffee served after lunch was delicious, it was great to sample the different types. They also give you a chance to buy some coffee and gifts on your way out, and it was actually all very affordable, we wish we had more room to buy more things from them. We can't recommend this tour enough.Written September 20, 2017

We did the coffee walk and stayed at the guest house for two nights. Both was an amazing experience! The guest house and the garden are beautiful, the meals are absolutely delicious and the people are extremely nice. The coffee walk with guide Samwel was very interesting: You get to see the village, talk to locals, learn a lot about coffee and Samwel will answer any of your questions, he is an excellent guide! All in all one of the highlights of our trips, we highly recommend this experience!

For us the coffee tour was absolutely a highlight while staying in Arusha! We really enjoyed the coffee walk and the exchange with our friendly guide Samwel. We’ve learned a lot about the village, the locals and of course about coffee. Samwel was an amazing host and we enjoyed the conversation with him a lot. If you want to do a coffee walk in Tanzania - this is the place!
Not to forget, the coffee was amazing! We’re already looking forward to drinking it again when we’re back home.
