*WARNING*comprehensive review up ahead*WHY you should take Syam Trekker?*Here are the salient points:

-low guest to guide ratio! we saw many other groups of up to 13 guests to one guide which we thought was absolutely dangerous! Syam ensures a maximum of 4-6 persons per guide for the sharing package.
-only experienced porters hired! this is paramount in ensuring that you are secured the best campsites to get the most awesome views of sunrises/sunsets! we saw a number of people who arrived before their porters and were standing around in the cold waiting for their tents/equipment/food!
-only high quality camping equipment were used! we slept on 2-inch thick mattresses with -10 degrees sleeping bags and air pillows. nonetheless it was like sleeping in our own beds at home, we were warm and didnt feel the hard ground at all and were refreshed for the climb the next day. most other companies we saw used thin rubber mats and sleeping bags, nothing compared to what we had.
-we had the best food on the mountain! imagine reaching the crater rim after a hard ascend to be greeted by deep fried banana fritters covered in cheese and chocolate sauce. in the cold wind, it was heavenly! our every other meal too were exceptionally prepared and tasty and looked much better than what the other people were having!
-value for money! compared to other organizers who charge similarly, Syam includes everything from the park entrance fees, a visit to the waterfall, and also boat to gili (we had a private boat all to ourselves as we took the private package!) and even achievement certificates! if you were to do some simple math and factored in the costs of the transports, overnight boarding before the climb, food and equipment as well as guide and porters, you will realize that they really do not profit much at all and have ernestly pieced together a perfect package to help you make this trip unforgettable!
********************
My husband (36) and I (31) did the Rinjani 3D2N private sembalun-summit-lake-senaru package with Syam Trekker on 28-30 June 2017 during the dry season. This was our first ever 'glamping' experience and also our first time climbing a volcano. Thanks to Syam and his team, we had the best experience of our lifetime!

To sum Rinjani up in short:
This is truly a tough challenge, both mentally and physically! The 3D2N route definitely needs above average fitness and also strong determination!

Syam's team:
These guys are genuine gems. They go all out to ensure that the best standards are met with everything! Syam himself is supremely efficient, knowledgeable and ernest in what he does. He replies any email lightning fast, never failed to answer every one of my queries, and completely puts us at ease even before we met him. He personally came to pick us up from the airport which is a 3-hour-long journey to his base in Senaru. We arrived at night and were welcomed with a warm home cooked dinner by his wife Resi. They both run this company, and previously were experienced guides for many years so they know exactly what the guests want, need, and even our peeves! Everything was arranged smoothly and perfectly from airport pickup to our sending off on a private speedboat to Gili.

The equipment that Syam provides is also top notch. We slept like we were in our own warm beds through the freezing nights in thick sleeping bags on 2-inch thick mattresses with air pillows to boot. The quality equipment we had were much above par compared to the thin rubber mattresses I saw most of the other companies using.

We had Awal as our guide, an honest-to-God, hardworking, thoughtful and reliable soul, God bless him. He was there with us every step of the way to the summit. On this grueling journey, we felt like we were royalty and he was our ever trusted advisor.

We had two porters with us (Amat and Senang) who were very strong and fast. Their speed is the key factor in securing the best spots for our tents (and outhouses!). These porters carry an average of 30-35kg on their shoulders up and down the route while only wearing flip-flops! They also cooked us the most heavenly meals. We never had to wait for our food or our sleeping tents. At every point that we reach we are greeted with hot drinks, food, and a place to lay down and rest! They provide so much food, snacks and and drinks for us, you really dont need to bring anything additional!

The Rinjani track:
This is the hardest mountain we have climbed thus far. The volcanic terrain near the summit was composed of loose sand, pebbles, rocks, and stones the size of fists and at a 60 degree inclination, every two steps up you will slide back a step! We started our summit climb at 2am but were slow in ascending and didnt make it in time for sunrise because we were unaccustomed to the cold..! You really need a good windbreaker and warm inners, gloves and such for this. And also good mid-cut boots you dont want sand and pebbles in your shoes! Bring along something to cover your nose and mouth too as there is plenty of dust being kicked about, our boogers were all black at the end of the day! We also found hiking poles very indispensable, Syam can provide you one.

Awal patiently encouraged us on and even offered to carry our daypack for us! But we refused and we are glad we made it on our own. The struggle was deeply paid off with the magnificent views from the peak. You can see the whole of Lombok and Gilis up to Mt Agung and Batur in Bali! Breathtaking and definitely worth it.

My husband and I are not very fit, we sometimes climb mountains and run in marathons but we arent consistently physically active. As we heard that this trek will be tough (and it certainly was!), we cheated a bit by bringing along celebrex (painkillers) during the climb to ward off the muscle ache and boy did it help..! A tip for those who are not so fit like us but still dream of reaching the summit. Eventhough we were slow on the push to the summit, we descended with no problems and arrived at our final destinations well within the expected times.

All in all:
Just take Syam Trekker. You will be in good hands and need not worry about anything else but to focus on completing the trek. They truly exceeded our expectations in every way. With them, there was nothing more for us to need or want. Good luck!

(last but not least, if you are happy with the service they provided, do tip your guides and porters well. we tipped Awal 400k IDR and Amat and Senang 300k IDR each. the people in Lombok generally live in such poverty and wagers are meager. if you are reading this and can afford to go on this trip, then you certainly can afford to tip them well and encourage them to keep up their superb hard work!)

Before our booking, we had some questions about the trek itself and what to bring along, but Syam answered all of these questions via email. As a result we booked the Mount Rinjani Trek Summit Lake 2 nights 3 days, sharing package from Syam Trekker in advance.

It included a pick up service from any location in Lombok and tranfer to base camp Rinjani in Senaru, our accommodation for the night (which was also included). Before check-in in Rinjani base camp, we've met Syam himself at his house/office and he gave us more information on the trek and the upcoming days. Rinjani base camp accommodation was relatively basic, but the people operating the base camp were very friendly and helpful. The view from their balcony is awesome!
Syam also arranged a guide for a walk to the waterfalls of Sindang Gila and Tiukelep the day before the trek, as we arrived relatively early that day.

The day after there was an early pick-up by our guide Jew and the rest of the team. We drove to Sembalun, where we had to register in the information centre.
After registration, our trek started! First day is only up hill; quite intense, but nature is beautiful and arriving at the Pelawangan Sembalun and seeing the views there is magnificent! Arriving there, Syam's team was preparing the tents and as well as our dinner. Dinner was of very good quality, specially if you think that these guys make dinner on one burner/cooking hob.

Which is important to mention is that Syam's team noticed the environment and collected all of our waste. During our visit it was Indonesian holiday after Ramadan and we saw other groups and guides during the tour, leaving almost everything they had used behind. This created a lot of trash laying around.
So think of the environment, pick Syam trekker or mention to your guide(s) that it is important to take the garbage down and collect it (probably they'll burn it, as recycling is not possible/on top of mind. However, it is good to create awareness for the waste problem).

The second day starts very early (2.00 a.m.) when leaving for the summit. We got a sandwich before leaving, but this was not enough for my boyfriend to reach the top. Advice would be to take or ask for an additional sandwich or some fruit to bring along. The last hour to the summit is very steep and difficult. It is lava sand with many loose stones, and as you take two steps forward you slip one step back. Arriving at the summit around 5/5.30 a.m. we had a clear view and we could see the whole of Lombok, the Gili islands and Bali. After sunset you go down again the same way as you got up. Back at the tents, the team prepared a big breakfast.
After breakfast you descend to the crater lake, visit hot springs and climb up again to the other side of the crater. When we arrived it rained, so we didn't had a good view. However, because it was relatively dark we saw lava coming out of the volcano!
During the night some wild dogs walked around our tent, but luckily Syam's team made sure they left very soon.

The next morning there was a clear sky and the view on the crater and the lake was splendid! We got a lovely breakfast with fruits and sandwiches. Afterwards we descend 4-5 hours to pintu Senaru, the finish.
Transportation back to Senaru and from there to the Gili's is also included in the package.

The trek is very intensive, but also very beautiful! Worthwile if you love being (very!)active and enjoy nature.
We would definitly recommed Syam Trekker for his (pre-)advice, his transparant communication, his friendly and helpful team and their amazing cooking skills! Their awareness for the environment was almost unique compared to other trekking groups. Climbing Rinjani was not easy, but Syam makes sure that the only thing you as a tourist have to do is to keep calm and climb and walk, and climb and walk etc....! :-)

After reading a lot of reviews on TripAdvisor, we decided to go with Syam Trekker for the Mount Rinjani climbing. I made a reservation through their website for the 2 days-1 night Crater Rim group package. The contact through email was very easy, they reply incredibly quick! So this increased my confidence in the organisation tremendously and I was very assured we were not being ripped off...
A driver awaited us at the port of Lombok. During the drive, he wanted to pull over to have a drink so there we sat, at a local "along the road" little shop of a lady he knew. I actually did not really have a problem with it and decided to just go with the flow. Afterwards he took us to Syam trekker's office (read: living room extension) where we were welcomed with a smile and a drink. When we sat down it became clear that something went wrong during the reservation and Syam scheduled us to do a group package to the top of the volcano instead of the rim (even though I had sent about a million emails about it...). Anyways, I showed him the emails so he agreed to give us the crater rim package BUT because we would not be in group anymore the trek would become more expensive: instead of 165 USD we would now pay 175 USD (per person). Looking back at it afterwards it would unfortunately not surprise me if he made the mistake on purpose. It seems rather weird to me that after at least three emails mentioning the CRATER RIM PACKAGE and a reservation through his website again mentioning the name of the package twice ( once in the title and once in the comments) that he would get this wrong accidentally. Looking back, I am actually a crazy woman for allowing him to charge us more because of a mistake HE made.

We were brought to Rinjani Base Camp. Listen to me: book something else. It is uncomfortable, the wifi is not working, the rooms have open parts and there is no mosquito net, no airconditioning and no hot water. After so carefully booking our other hotels in Indonesia looking for a minimum of comfort, I hated myself for not checking this before we went and just thrusting Syam Trekker about it. The only nice thing was that they took us to the waterfalls (must-see!) and advised us to go see the stick fighting.

Next day we left for the trekking. Our guide was absolutely great. I was completely astonished though when I found out what he and our two porters got paid by Syam. 300 000 IDR for the two days. Me and my boyfriend paid Syam 5 000 000 IDR. I was incredibly angry at that point. We ended up giving the porters and our guide a huge tip, but I really think this is not how it should be if you already pay so much for your hike. The tent we got was nice quality, just as the food and the mats. The sleeping bags have been great quality when they bought them probably (they were from Lafuma) but after all the usage they were not really warm anymore so we spent the night being very cold.

It is true that he paid our boat ticket to the gilis. This ticket was extremely cheap as it was with a slow public boat, so it did not really explain the high price of our trip. According to booking.com, Rinjani base camp is not expensive either so now I have one question: why the hell was our trip this expensive??? From what I can see, Syam puts at least 50% in his own pocket, whilst his guides and porters do all the hard work. I am completely furious about this. Also, when we were on the Gilis we bought some snorkelling equipment and talked to the French guy in the store. When I told him what we paid for our trip he looked at us like we were crazy and said we paid waaaay too much.

I hope Syam trekker is reading this and realises the following: we feel completely ripped off.

Oh btw, did I tell you the trip is hard and you only get to see the volcano for about 10 mins? Right, I would consider spending your time more wisely than I did.
For a complete story about this trip you can visit meetourplanet.com if you are interested. I will put a more extensive version there in the upcoming week.

Thank you for giving judgment unfavorable to us Syam Trekker and we have ask the owner of Rinjani Base Camp to repair and now Wifi, hot water is run well. But for other information that we do not agree with you such as: 1. The problem you move your package from Senaru crater rim 2 days with costs 165 USD per person to Summit Rinjani 2 days 1 night with cost of 175 USD per person less than the our current cost 190 USD per person we never force you. 2. All of our guests who have been climb Rinjani never in case the cold because of our sleeping bag (and almost all the tracks organizer in Rinjani most use as we use because the is best quality for made in Indonesia) 3. We never pay a porter with 150,000 IDR per day but we pay 175,000 IDR per day plus 25,000 IDR for a packet of garbage that they bring back to the village. 4. You are wrong to said we took advantage of the 50% from you paid x 175 x 2 = 350 USD x 13,100 IDR = 4,585,000 IDR, because we have to pay for the rental car to pick you up you from the harbor to Senaru 600,000 IDR and return from Senaru to the Bangsal harbor 600,000 IDR and also transport from Senaru to Sembalun pp, transport by boat to the Gili island, a hotel room, your dinner, foods and drinks for 2 days on the mountains for you 2 person and your guides and porters, camping equipment such as a tent, sleeping bag, matrass, toilet tent and cooking gears, as well as the entrance fee to the national park of Mount Rinjani 150,000 IDR per person we paid for you. if we total all the cost we spent for your trip we just took a little profit. You never compare our prices with companies that sold the packages that are much more expensive than us but you just compare our prices with other company sold with cheap prices and you say we take advantage of 50% from you pay 350 USD, you are wrong because you do not know what service you will get if you go with them and you never know how much money we spend to organizing your trip. We strongly object to your writing is too vilify us Syam Trekker without any complained before when you down from the mountain or you are just looking for a thrill that other people hate us Syam Trekker or maybe you want to promote your Blog. Thanks I hope you read this and understand your wrote a review is incorrect.

Our 5 porters and a guide Jar took great care of us throughout the 2 days trip, making sure we were alright and safe. Just remembering you "Do'nt forget to bring your trekking poles and good jacket" very cold up there. Thank you for the awesome experience!

We were a family with 2 kids, by which 1 guide and 4 porters came along who company us, porters carry lots of foods, camping equipment and water so alot of respect for that.
They treated us as friends especially for my kids, cooking great food and providing very good tents and sleeping bags.
We took enough breaks, by which they always provided a mat to sit on with lots of snacks and fruit.
It was one of the best experiences in our life, although it stays really exhausting, and cannot be underestimated, but the views from crater rim Senaru make up for it. Syam Trekker and team highly recommended!!!
