About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Mark D0 contributionsAn unforgettable jungle experience. We partook in a 2 day 1 night jungle expedition in November 2024. The expedition booking and transfer arrangements made by us from the UK were straightforward. We were picked up in Medan airport and had a private transfer to their ‘hotel’ in Bukit Lawang and were dropped off at Lake Toba afterwards. We spent 1 night in the hotel accommodation run by the man calling himself Mr Cool - quite a full on and fun character - which was actually really good. It was a 1 bedroom air conditioned quirky garden bungalow. The next day we set off into the jungle with our guides Tondi and Janed. Our guides proved to be first class. Informative, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and competent. They made the trip. We were lucky enough to spot many Orangutan on both days as well as many other jungle animals, flora and fauna. The trekking at times was very tough with steep slippy paths both up and down. The campsite was next to a very welcome river which was ideal for bathing :-) The campsite was basic but we were well looked after. The food served, especially during the trekking was exceptional. All carried by the guides. So many thanks go to Tondi, Janed and Daddy Cool you all helped make our jungle experience unforgettable.Written November 17, 2024
- MaritvanderHeijden0 contributions4 days / 3 nights: we loved it!LOVED IT. We did a 4 day jungle hike with Sumatra Orangutan Treks, and it was AMAZING. We slept in 3 different camps overnight, all by different spots of the river in the national park. We saw so many wild animals including many orang utans (mamas and babies), longtail makas, thomas leaf monkeys, black sianengs, white head gibbons and more. Our guides Ahmed and Anto were really kind and amazing at spotting wildlife. They also shared about medicinal plant knowledge and the local culture. At night we were joined in the camp by our chef Andy who made the most amazing food (I’d honestly do this hike again just for his pumpkin curry). Lunch was incredible as well, lots of fresh fruit! We also liked that company is locally owned (most trekking companies are owned by westeners). Thanks for an unforgettable experience! Cheers, Marit and SamWritten November 16, 2024
- Trek412655893780 contributionsPerfect jungle adventure 🦧It was an amazing adventure that I can recommend to everyone. We’ve been so lucky with our guides Amri and BamBam. 🥰 Both of them had so much knowledge about the jungle and were super funny people. They made the experience even better. Next to small monkeys, snakes, bats and fishes we’ve seen a few Orangutans. All the animals felt super relaxed and happy in their habitat. The hike has some steep parts but the view after is totally worth it. The trek was super well organized and the food is amazing! We had a great time in the jungle.Written October 23, 2024
- andrewjP9943DW0 contributionsFantastic Family ExperienceOur family of four (parents and our 7 and 8 YOA kids) went on the seven day tour of North Sumatra. Before going, our kids only knew the city...after this trip they love the outdoors! We had two amazing hikes, one into the jungle to see orangutans and another up a volcano. Completely different experiences but both were amazing! The other days were filled with cultural activities and rest. There was a fair amount of driving between the three locations we visited (each about a four hour drive), but the driver and guide were always telling the significance of sights as we passed or stopped to look at them. Everyone we met was fantastic and went out of their ways to make our trip enjoyable, but we want to give a shoutout to Tondi! He was with us the entire trip, and he was full of interesting insights everywhere we went. Really we can't recommend this package enough, so many great memories!Written October 21, 2024
- silkea3000 contributionsAmazing experience, thanks to AmetWe had an incredible experience with this organization. Although we were a little apprehensive about the jungle at first, Amet immediately reassured us. He knows an enormous amount about the jungle, you can ask any question and he guides you perfectly through the whole trip. We also got to know Janet and Wanda. Together they provided good food, a safe place to sleep and most of all a lot of adventure! Definitely book with this organization because they are really locals and for something unforgettable you should ask Amet to guide you. Many greetings and lots of love from Silke and JonasWritten October 14, 2024
- Dazzerelli20 contributionsOnce in a Lifetime ExperienceWe did a one-day trek with Mowgli and Anto and had a wonderful experience. They are both very knowledgeable and friendly. From our research beforehand, we were not totally confident that we would actually get to see the orangutans but we, with their expertise, we were incredibly lucky and spent about an hour looking at orangutans at two separate points which was a really wonderful experience. Anto was particularly good at always ensuring that we had the best view possible. The trek to see the orangutans can be quite steep at times so we wouldn't recommend this trip for anyone with walking difficulties. The trip included a snack which included lots of fruit and we also had a wonderful lunch, both of which were beautifully presented. Finally, the tour ended with a trip along the river in a raft which was excellent fun and gave amazing views of the forest and the villages alongside it. In short, this was a brilliant experience and we'd really recommend it!Written September 26, 2024
- annevK3813IG0 contributionsGreat experience! It was great! We are just back from our tour, It was a great experience to see some highlights of north sumatra in a short time. We saw a lot of animals in the jungle, climb a vulcano and relaxt at lake toba. Our gide Kolong was great! A very friendly local that knows a lot about his beautiful country. He told us a lot about the places and the people we have seen. We also had a lot of fun with him. Also many thanks for the lovely people at the jungle! We feel very welcome. In this tour you dont have to worry about anything. You also get some time for yourself. We had a very good driver Simon. He was driving very safe. The traffic in sumatra is hard sometimes. Thank you so much for this experiene! Xx Evert and AnneWritten August 24, 2024
- melonyw1350 contributionsPeaceful paradiseWe did 2 day one night trek - with tubing back down the river. Also elephant grazing (you must do this with the wash as in natural habitat). Stayed at their villa also. Very peaceful and tranquil- this is the point of difference from other big guest houses. Very intimate and so staff make you feel like family. They are very helpful - and not pushy. This was a bucket list trip which was made ever more special by the staff! Trek and campsite very authentic. Indonesia is different from Western Society with bookings etc. For some their systems may question your validity but this is a very reputable and honest company. Thank you so much - I will always fully recommend.Written August 22, 2024
- danai2710 contributionsTrust me, you don't want to miss out on this tourThis tour was everything and even more than we expected! It had perfect blend between a bit of adrenaline, getting out of comfort zone and time to chill and relax. There was not a second we would feel bored or over something, because tour is done in a wonderful way, where you get to experience jungle to its core, see animals (in jungle and while driving from one place to another), try local fruits and local cuisine (amazing by the way), nature, just EVERYTHING! We had quite a time to drive in the car, so use this time to ask any questions about Indonesia, culture, nature, history, politics, religion etc - we got to know more about local life than we ever would from National geographic. The only thing that we needed to do - is to wake up, dress, grab bottle of water, go for breakfast and be on time to depart. Everything was taken care of, and if we wanted to hop in coffee shop or any other place, staff would make sure to arrange that. This tour definitely will make you crave more of Indonesia! The thing that we appreciated the most were people that took care of us - you are truly great hosts and guides! We truly felt like on a vacation, where we don't have to think and deal with problems - you always soved them once we asked for help. The mutual respect was there from the very first minute, and I am sure we made great friends at Indonesia. We want to say huge thanks to manager Daddy Cool, to Mulgi and Anto who were guiding us through jungle and biggest thanks to our guide Konong who brought us to Berastagi and lake Toba. We can't thank you enough. As Jurijs said - you are a great guy and a great guide, and I can't agree with him more. These people are just amazing, and we would redo the tour just to meet and spend some time with them again! :) With love, Dana, Inese and Jurijs.Written August 18, 2024
- U739GYfc0 contributionsPriceless tour in the jungleThe jungle trekking provided by Sumatra Orangutang treks was amazing. Our guide, Tondi, did everything he could so we would have the best views and experience as possible. Besides, he is very concerned about the ecological side of the tour, so he always made sure everything happend in a responsible way. He was always very enthusiastic and friendly! Thank you Tondi! Thanks to Daddy Cool as well for the warm welcome. The tour is 100% worth your money. To see and experience the jungle is priceless. There are tons of companies who can offer you this tour but this company really makes the difference with the warm people who work here!Written July 29, 2024
- 125risat0 contributionsAn unforgettable experience! My 13-year old son and I went on a mother-son trip to see orangutans in Bukit Lawang, and I couldn't be happier with the 3-day package. We were picked up from the Kualanamu airport by our driver, Berlin. The drive was easy and smooth, and one can tell very quickly that Berlin is an experienced, reliable driver. The car was clean and brand new, and he made the 4-hour drive to Bukit Lawang very comfortable. On the day of the hike, we saw many orangutans -- one mother with baby, one 40-year old male, and many others swinging between branches -- a few long-tailed Thomas monkeys, a family of pig-tailed monkeys, a monitor lizard, macaque monkeys. We also heard a herd of gibbons singing from afar, but we couldn't see them. It was an amazing experience. They were gentle and healthy, and we felt so lucky to be able to see orangutans in the wild. Our guides, Helmi and Anto, were fun, cheerful, knowledgeable, and respectful. They knew where to walk to help us spot the orangutans, and they prepared a scrumptious array of fruits (mangosteens, rambutans, passionfruits, bananas, oranges, watermelon) for our snacks, and some nasi goreng served in banana leaves for our lunch. The hike itself was smooth, but there are no paved walks/steps and some parts are steep and slippery. We enjoyed the challenge, but I imagine this could be difficult for people with mobility and balance issues, especially after it rains. We took the "jungle raft" down the river, which was so much fun! I had worried that the ride would be bumpy, but the water was relatively calm. We got wet, but our clothes dried off within less than an hour as we walked around afterwards. Compared to other, more touristy parts I've seen in Indonesia, I was so impressed by how clean the river was. We saw the batcave immediately thereafter. We didn't spend too much time here, but we enjoyed the climb into the cave, the trees, and the stalactites and stalagmites we saw in the cave. On the final day, Dedi took us on a tour of the village, where we saw demonstrations of how people make tofu, weave thatched roofs, and cook brown sugar. We topped off the tour with a drink of fresh coconut juice and ate some ubi goreng under the trees, before heading back to our villa, before Berlin took us back to Kualanamu airport. All in all, it was a remarkable experience. I wish we had booked for a longer stay, where we could stay overnight in the jungle. Next time!Written July 25, 2024
- 626mirthev0 contributionsGreat jungle trekking!Very nice walking trip up and down in the jungle! Amed was a great guide! We saw a lot of apes and monkeys next to orang utans! Nice food and sleeping place in the jungle!Written July 20, 2024
- Safari3235850 contributionsAmazing trip in North SumatraWe have just got back from our tour with Sumatra Orangutan Treks. We did really enjoy it. The absolut best bit was, of course, seeing so many free orangutans. Lovely, like in our best dreams. We also saw a lot of other apes/monkeys. We had Tondi Sirat as a guide and he was amazing. Not only did he guide us and comfort us when needed (the walking was sometimes challenging. We are over 60 and not untrained but neither topfit) he also told us a lot about the wildlife and the plants and about people in Indonesia and about how it is like to live there. The rest of the trip was also good. The views over Simabung and the the trec up Sibayak in the morning was beautiful. So was Samosir in lakeToba. We enjoyed the views and also a swim in the lake. We had Simon as a driver. He was a safe driver on sometimes very winding roads. The accommodation was good, maybe except fot the plastic mattress in the jungle (but that was an experience in itself). The food was delicious. I think the absolut best was the food in the jungle! We can really recommend this trip!Written July 13, 2024
- Ana M0 contributionsCouldn’t recommend moreI’ve done the jungle immersion with Amat and Amso in August 2023 and was amazing, they are both very knowledgeable about the jungle and the orangutans, but are also super friendly. I went alone and a driver picked me up at the airport and drove me to the lodge, and the same on my day back. The guys bring food prepared for the meals and loads of fruit for snacking along the trek, everything was great. I was in a group of 4 and slept in a improv tent with mattresses and mesh nets.Written July 8, 2024
- X6364XXirism0 contributionsOnce in a lifetime experience! We did a 3 days/2 nights tour with Sumatra Orang Utan Treks Team and it was an absolute fantastic, magical experience we will never forget. Already before the tour, the communication via e-mail was very uncomplicated and easy and the responsiveness and friendlyness was amazing! The pick up at the airport was perfect and our guide Dondi and Simon brought us safely through the Indonesian streets to Bukit Lawang with a stop in a local restaurant for dinner. I could write a long story, so just let me say the highlights: Our guides Dondi, Anto and Barjan (best chef in the jungle), the Orang Utans (we saw at least 15 of these wonderful creatures), Gibbons, Thomas, Makas, Turtles, an absolute wonderful jungle, which looked sometimes unreal like a movie set, the floating on tubes down the river through the jungle….. everything was just perfect! a big thank you also to Dedy Cool and the whole team! we would book the tour always again with them and highly recommend to all of you if you want to have a perfect experience in Sumatra!Written July 6, 2024

We had fantastic days with our guides Konong, Ahmed and Bangbang. The jungle trek was amazing. Unfortunately, we became ill during the tour, but the guides were very flexible with this. The hike on Mount Sibayak was certainly a highlight!

We gave Sumatra Orangutan Treks a well deserved 5 out of 5 rating in all areas. To be honest, we expected this tour company to be reputable and reliable based on its excellent ratings on Trip Advisor. To our surprise this family run tour company is truly exceptional and it exceeded our expectations in every way. When our Batik flight’s arrival time was delayed from 9 am to 8pm we thought our tour would have to be shortened by a day but Sumatra Orangutan Treks managed to have a driver meet us at the airport, wait for us to eat a quick dinner in the airport and then drive us to Bukit Lawang that evening so that we could still start the tour on time. The family met us with refreshments at 11 pm for our orientation and then took us to an amazing new cottage in the middle of some very scenic rice paddies. The large bedroom and gigantic upscale bathroom were over the top. The restaurant food in the main building was excellent even for people like us who are vegan.
The jungle trek and raft trip the next day ended up being more memorable and adventurous than we expected. We were lucky to spot a mother orangutan and her child early in the trek and another similar pair later in the trek. The spread of exotic fruits and the lunch on banana leaves were great. The next day we saw the bat cave before being driven to Berastagi. That cave and its bats were orders of magnitude more impressive than what we were expecting. This series of caves is not to be missed if you are reasonably fit and agile. A similar world class system of caves in the U. S. would be electrified with man-made steps and guardrails. The Indiana Jones experience of going through these caves was the most unexpected highlight of the tour. Later that day we saw the ghost town near Mount Sibuatan volcano. Before dinner we saw Berastagi with its fruit market, etc. The tour guide spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna. We got to sample medicinal plants, local fruits and spices in the field and in the market. That night the tour had us stay in a very high-end Berastagi hotel with a rooftop restaurant and a miniature jungle with a Koi pond and bridge that you walked over to reach the reception. I’m not sure why … but we lucked out and got bumped up to an amazing rooftop suite. However, I don’t think this particular room is usually included in the tour. The next day we saw Mount Sibayak volcano which was very scenic with its various steam vents. That trek was actually easier than we expected. We opted to skip the hot springs stop as it was Sunday and it wasn’t directly on the way back to Berastagi. Instead we had a memorable lunch overlooking Berastagi before heading back to our airport hotel.
We had a very successful private tour in Sumatra with Sumatra Orangutan Treks where we felt like VIP (very important persons) every step of the way. Even the SUV that we traveled in was new and luxurious. We even received a follow up call from Sumatra Orangutan Treks back in the U.S. shortly after we got back. I’m 71 yrs old and my friend is 63 yrs old. I’ve visited over 100 countries and this tour was among the top three tours I have ever taken. Sumatra Orangutan Treks has definitely earned our highest possible recommendation.

We were picked up from Medan airport by Konong who was our guide for the entire tour. He got us a sim card (along with Berlin our driver) and Konong was telling us about the tour, what to expect and about the culture of Bukit Lawang and Berastagi and it was super informative. We arrive in Bukit Lawang to an extremely friendly team at the restaurant who gave us a welcome drink and dinner. Then Heri spoke to us to explain the itinerary and we went to our accommodation which was beautifully set around some rice paddies and other trees.
We started the two day jungle trek with Helmi, Konong and Antong as our guides and we saw Orangutans, Gibbons, Langurs and Macaques. Konong and Helmi were also helping us know the different flora around Bukit Lawang. The hikes in the jungle are intense and instances where it was slippery. The camp site was in the jungle and we played cards and had dinner in candle light. It was the best experience. The amenities here are very basic but still comfortable and we sleep or wake up to the sounds of the river flowing.
We do a return hike and arrive at the site of the river tube rafting and it is even more spectacular. After tube rafting we went to a bat cave and saw our eleventh and final orangutan for the trip. we say goodbye to our jungle guide, Helmi here and he was definitely one of the best guides I've had on tours.
I did a soap making workshop in the morning before we left to Berastagi. Konong is the mountain guide and he took us around Berastagi markets and we had dinner. The following morning we hiked the volcano which was beautiful. Konong brought us coffee and then we visited hot springs and Lake Toba. End of the tour and we return to Medan on the final day. Simon was the driver this time and he dropped us off on time for our flight.
The food, people and the tour was just outstanding.
Things to note:
If you are vegan, make sure you specify it to Heri when booking and they cater to vegan/vegetarian food in most places except a couple of places in Berastagi but Konong helped me find some there too.
It is not an easy trek so be prepared to trek some long hours and as it is a rainforest, the sweat and dew in the jungle will not dry you or your clothes off so easily. Please carry everything the tour says "what to bring".
All of the tour is ethical and our guides did not cross the lines trying to get us the perfect Orangutan view and they are willing to learn so if you don't like something, please let them know and they will take it onboard. They are lovely, hospitable people and supporting them is something we can do for the betterment of our rainforests, culture, planet.💚

Do it. It was an I Incredible experience I would recommend for anyone considering a Sumatran jungle + volcano trek. They use local guides from each area and support local food market vendors. There is ethical treatment of wild animals in that there was no feeding of the orangutans to encourage them to come close to us and all fruit was cut so scraps left for compost wouldn’t introduce diseases to foraging animals. We managed to see 11 orangutans, some up close, countless monkeys and gibbons, a turtle and peacock.
Our guides, Konong and Helmi, went above and beyond to support us and make sure we had an amazing time. This included helping to fix my trekking boots 2km into the trek when the rubber gave out, first aid for a leech, and keeping me laughing at the same time. I was nervous about trekking the inclines but we took a steady pace and it was lots of fun.
The drivers and accommodation staff were brilliant, the food was delicious and they were able to cater for my vegan boyfriend as well.
Absolutely recommend!
