About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Travel290420591140 contributionsAmazing trip - thanks to BayuThe last few days have been wonderful. Driver Bayu picked us up at the hotel in the morning. During the days, he drove us everywhere. He told stories about the locals and Indonesia. He is very humble, kind and relaxed. On the last day, my girlfriend got sick. Bayu helped us with finding a hotel in Ketapang and translated everything to the lady of the reception. From the bottom of my heart, I am very grateful for that. The tour itself is also unique. We did a 3D/2N tour with Bromo and Ijen, starting from Malang. The sunrise at Bromo and the tour to Ijen are amazing. The hotels are basic, but you have to surrender yourself to it. You get up early every morning, so be fit! Communication with Smartine Travel went very fast and clear. I would really recommend this trip and definitely driver Bayu.Written October 6, 2024
- Sightseer112795902470 contributionsMont bromo/Kawah Ijen with Wildan : perfect !!We chose the 2 days/2 nights option to climb Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen. it was great! we were with Wildan, he gave us lots of explanations, he gave us time to enjoy (unlike other organized tours we saw), he was super friendly, didn't hesitate to take photos of us and helped us find a taxi in bali when he dropped us off at the port. Really, I recommend 1000%!! everything was plannedWritten September 14, 2024
- Robinv12080 contributionsAmazing trip to bromo and Ijen !!!We did the 3D2N bromo-Ijen tour with Mull as our driver and guide. We really enjoyed this experience! The waterfall and volcanos were really beautiful. Mull was an excellent driver! He arranged everything for us and made sure we had everything we needed. He even arranged a little present for our honeymoon. We can really recommend this tour with Mull.Written September 11, 2024

- annevK3813IG0 contributionsGreat experience! Many thanks to our driver Didik! He told us a lot about Java. Very friendly! We had a great tour! Unfortunately Ijen was closed because it was active but we get an alternative programm. The tour operator was very helpfull! Many thanks. You all made our honeymoon perfect!Written August 30, 2024
- VictoriaT23220 contributionsNice trip with Didik!Nice trip with Didik. We visited Tumpak Sewu and Mont Bromo, he was a super driver from Malang to Surabaya. Nice to talk with him, very interesting to speak about Indonesian culture and way of life. Mont Bromo trip is great but the accommodation is not super confort (cold shower).Written August 27, 2024
- B1313PNstefanies0 contributionsDriver DeluxeDodo was the perfect driver and company for three days. Always smiling, very kind, helpful and on time. He gave us a lot of information about Java and took us to secret and stunning places. He checked us in and out of the hotels, bought tickets and drove around safely but still Indonesian style, which we enjoyed experiencing. He even arranged our pick up from the ferry on Bali. We would definitely book him again!!!! Thumbs up for Dodo - I wish there were more than 5 stars!Written August 23, 2024
- lorenzal8120 contributionsProfessionalism, punctuality but also many smiles, information and sociability.I COULDN’T ASK FOR BETTER. The trip went beyond expectations, everything was organized perfectly exactly as I asked. Perfect timing, comfort of the car, perfect accommodation, water always ready. Heri drives so well, he immediately made me feel at ease in his comfortable car. He is a very nice and kind person, he explained to me along the way many things about his country and many small details that made the trip special. He knows all the spot well and knows where to take you to avoid crowded places of tourists and let you discover special places. He is very sociable, with him I had the opportunity to talk to the locals even if we spoke different languages. Professionalism, punctuality but also many smiles and sociability.Written August 21, 2024
- 246enricom0 contributionsBest experience and tour guides! We had an amazing time during our tour! The agency was super helpful, they added sunrise at Borobudur temple and drop off at the end of the tour in Ketapang harbor (ferry to Bali included) on our request. We spent one day with Agung in Yogyakarta while visiting the temples and the rest of the time in Malang and on mount Bromo with Didik. They're both super nice, friendly and qualified. They also speak a really good English so we had great conversations about local history and culture during our trip. Unfortunately Ijen was closed due to volcanic activities but the agency gave us immediately different new options to choose. We decided to visit Baluran National Park and we didn't regret it! We totally recommend this tour and agency!Written August 15, 2024
- alicenB27SE0 contributionsVery nice experienceThe visit was well organized with a tour guide and a driver very friendly and helpful. They also help us with photos and videos! The visit was an amazing experience, the sunrise even more than the waterfalls. Very recommended!Written August 14, 2024
- Chloe20170 contributionsBromo is definitely worth it!I have mixed feeling but both our guide Didin and the volcano did the job! Ups: - Guide Didin very friendly. Was waiting for us at Surabaya station with some fruits. He gave us informations about Java, bought us some local fruits (coconut, sugar cane, snake fruits, etc) and he could show us the best spots at Bromo volcano. - we had a big van for our family of 4. Since we had a long road between Bromo and Ketapang harbour, we had a lot of space in the van. The kids could sleep after the very early wake up to see Bromo. - the sunrise views on Bromo are just amazing and are totally worth the early wake up. Downs: A little disappointed with the Smartline agency. - I had to remind them of my train tickets that they had to buy from Yogja to Surabaya - They did not inform us that Ijen volcano was closed though we had booked a 3 days/2 nights tour. By chance, I heard from a local guide in Yogja that the Ijen volcano was closed and I was the one contacting Smartline for an update. Luckily, I was able to modify our travel arrangements for the rest of our trip but I think that a travel agency should keep clients informed about such important informations. - The hotel that the agency booked for us was really low standard and badly situated due to a late booking on their side. Initially, they proposed Lava Cafe which is not high standard but right at the entrance of Bromo. Finally, we ended up in Lava hill resort which is at a much lower altitude which means that you need to wake up about 1 hour earlier!Written August 8, 2024
- Nicolas150230 contributionsMagical Bromo sunriseWe spent a magical experience at Bromo during the sunrise and the rest. A lot of people but because it was in July and during the week-end but still awesome and beautiful :-) Helios did the best to make us cumfortable. They borrowed us jacket for the cold, water, breakfast, snacks. Furthermore, I asked them for others tours/transfer in Java and they always answered to me and proposed me good advices and prices.Written July 30, 2024
- Cruiser011877409980 contributionsVery good experience.Very good service, well organized and a fantastic driver. We booked 3 days (Malang, Tumpur Sewu waterfalls and the thee plantation) with a drop-off in Surabaya. Great experience.Written July 24, 2024
- marievS3417LL0 contributionsOverall very good experienceDodo was a very kind and helpful driver, even though his English wasn’t always very good, he always tried his very best and showed us the best spots and highlights! Only the accommodation at Café lava hostel was a very basic, there is no heating so make shure that you take enough of wam clothes without you on the trip. The overall trip was very well prepared! We enjoyed it so much!Written July 6, 2024
- justinelD6633QR0 contributions2D1N Mont Bromo and Kawah IjenWe did the 2 days 1 night tour - Bromo (sunrise and top of the volcano) and Ijen (with blue fire), and it was amazing ! Our guide Didin was very competent and we learned a lot of Indonesian words. The views were beautiful, our guide found a spot with less people at mont bromo and we felt safe at mont ijen. We had tea, coffee and fried bananas included during the tour. The hotel (ijen view hotel and resort) was great but we were really tired. Blue fire is not included, we paid 150k IDR, and it was so crowded that we did not really appreciated it, but the rest of the Ijen visit was amazing. Clothes : for Bromo you walk only 15min in a slippery path and then you wait for sunrise. For Ijen you walk way more (5km with 500m elevation) so it is way harder. For both of them it’s better to have hiking shoes and warm clothes. We did the tour at the end of June : on a weekend, during the Indonesian holidays and the start of european summer so there’s was a lot of people. But if you don’t do blue fire there will be less people.Written July 1, 2024

With our family of 5 (age kids 4, 7 & 9) we enjoyed a great tour with Smartine and our guide Virdan and his driver.
Virdan picked us up from the hotel and was fortunately very patient with us since we first had to solve an issue with our hotel. We visited a very impressive waterfall (Makadipura Waterfall) and everything was taken care of. We arrived at Cemara Lawang he showed us a nice view point for the sunset of the Bromo vulcano and he recommended a very nice restaurant for diner.
During the early morning tour to the sunrise he took great care of our kids who were quite tired after a short night of sleep. On the 2nd day he also introduced a great local restaurant on our way to Bondowosso. The trekking to Ijen was tough especially for our kids, but we managed very well.
We could highly recommend Smartine Indonesian Tour operator as a friendly, reliable and well organized travel agency.

We made the tour of three days and two nights and visited the volcanoes Bromo and Ijen. It was fantastic! The organization of the company is brilliant and makes things much easier for the client. The experience of the volcanoes is very good. The sunrise at the Bromo is very beautiful and the Ijen is an unforgettable experience. If you intend to visit the Ijen you have to visit the blue fire (amazing!). It is a bit of a hard trek but nothing that can't be done. Our local guide was a former sulphur miner and it was great to have him as a guide. The Ijen has a sad and unfair part that is also worth seeing and that is that the sulphur miners work in terrible conditions, very hard and expose themselves to serious health problems and earn a pittance. Everything is worth visiting! I recommend it 100% and the agency too. And I cannot finish without mentioning our fabulous guide we had during the three days. He is Mull and he is a real cracker :)

Bromo and Ijen cannot be missed! Worth the early mornings and effort to trek. Enggar was prompt and patient in liaising with me via WhatsApp and email. She worked out a different itinerary for us based on our needs. She even coordinated a Tumpak Sewu waterfall tour the evening before, after another tour operator cancelled at the last min.
Vivin our driver and guide introduced us to local snacks and culture along the way. He was always a call away and helped to troubleshoot issues with our accomm. He also liaised to get a local guide for Ijen who was a previous sulpher miner. Despite speaking little English, Lili really took care of us during the treacherous climb down, telling us where was safe around the crater and pacing us on the journey up. Overall a wonderful experience of Bromo and Ijen on these tours. Would recommend! :)

We did a customized Bromo & Ijen Tour (3 nights instead of 2) and were very, very happy with the whole experience. Figuring out a custom itinerary and clarifying the details was great, as Vinda was very responsive and answered all of our questions quickly. For payment they even have € and USD-bank accounts, which we found to be very convenient.
The tour itself was very good as well, our guide Virdan and our driver Bon were both great guys and did their job very well being always at our service and more than punctual. Virdan speaks great English and therefore could answer all our questions.
Bromo NP and Ijen speak for themselves, both are truly stunning places. In Bromo we had a local driver bringing us around and in Ijen we were provided a nice local hiking guide. The hotels (Bromo Permai and Ijen View Hotel) were as described and good enough for our purposes (Bromo and Ijen are popular for sunrise, so we woke up at very early hours anyway)
I would totally recommed Smartine to anybody who wants to do a tour in eastern Java. Whenever planning the trip, i found it to be a bit hard to find a trustworthy and reputable tour company, but with Smartine i found a very great one!

We had an incredible adventure with Smartine! Hiking Mount Bromo and seeing the blue flames at Ijen was unforgettable, and we extended it to the wonderful snorkeling in Bali (with a fantastic ecolodge, Kubuku). Vinda handled all of the logistics beautifully before, during, and after, and our driver Nendra got us everywhere we wanted quickly and smoothly. I’d highly recommend using Smartine for wherever you want to go- all the local guides got us to the best spots (and know all the best photo ops!). The waterfalls, blue flame, sunrise views, and sea turtle spotting were all memories we’ll treasure forever. Thank you!

Wonderful experience! We have seen the Madakaripura waterfalls + Bromo + Kawah Ijen (with blue flames tour). The driver (Wiwin) as well as the Smartine operator (Vinda) were super kind and professional. Wiwin is fluent in English and this has also made the journeys more enjoyable. Everything was well organized and we enjoyed all the activities with perfect timing, exactly as reported in the tour program. I think it's really worth relying on this tour instead of organising everything on your own: we would have missed something and everything would have been much more complicated without our guide. We didn't have to think about anything because Wiwin took care of every detail. They have made our adventure on Bromo and Ijen simply unforgettable. Highly recommended to fully appreciate these incredible nature wonders.

We had a very good experience with this local tour! The communication beforehand and during the trip was excellent, which made us feel comfortable and well-prepared. At every stop, there was a guide included or our wonderful driver, Dodo, would accompany us to take some amazing photos.
The scenery was breathtaking—Indonesia's natural beauty is truly something to behold. The sunrise at Bromo is an absolute must-see, though it is quite popular and can get crowded. Fortunately, we stayed at a hostel very close to the entrance, making the early morning start much easier.
Our driver, Dodo, was exceptionally friendly and always checked in to make sure everything was fine.
Overall, it was a fantastic experience, although we were a bit disappointed that Ijen was closed during our visit. Nonetheless, we highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to explore the beauty of East Java!

This tour was so so much fun. The trip up to Bromo was amazing, so interesting to see how people live in that very high up region. The hotel was really fun, had a very vintage ski lodge feel. The views were unbelievable- it really surpassed our expectations.
The trip up to Ijen was also really fun, it’s quite intense, a very steep climb followed by lots of smoke and a large stream of people going up and down at the same time- but absolutely worth it for the view at sunrise.
Nendra our guide was really great. He text me every morning to let us know he was ready for us, was always punctual and always made us laugh.
Overall 10/10 trip!

We booked a 3D2N trip mainly for mount Ijen and Bromo. It was a wonderful experience even though we had to set up at midnight and had long travel time on the way. But the beautiful views really deserved. My friends said they highly recommend this place to their friends if they travel to Indonesia. Our guide Virdan is friendly and share with us interesting info on the way. His English is good also. He will inform us the timing and schedule ahead. During climbing up, he paid attention to everyone. Driver bordan has excellent driving skills especially driving on the winding roads. We never feel uncomfortable and rest well on the van. Anyways, so lucky to travel with you all.

It seems like you are cutting things close, time wise. Look at a good map of the island of Java. You will notice that Ijen is a good 60 miles east of the Surabaya Airport. However, that works out to about five hours of heavy-traffic driving. Luckily, the tour company I used (Helios Tours) was very flexible when it came to scheduling. Check with them. They will have the prices, etc.

Aim was to Bromo sunrise on Sun 29th and Ijen crater blue flames on Mon 1st July the get on the ferry to Bali fitting in the other sights on your tour on the route. What would you suggest?
Also is there flexibility to choose accommodation?
