- O4514JLjasond0 contributionsFabulous cooking experienceIf you want a wonderful day learning about Balinese food and culture, this is the experience for you! We started the day visiting a local food market. Our host, “Goose,” took the time to explain all about the different types of food, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. We then visited his family’s rice field and he told us about the process for making rice. Then we went back to his family’s home and spent a really fun time cooking. The family talked through each step and helped us make an amazing 8 course meal. The cooking was super fun and the food was so delicious. We went with our 2 boys (ages 7 and 10), and Goose went out of his way to show them the steps. He also explained a lot about Balinese customs and culture. Thank you for an amazing experience!Written December 30, 2023
- 115freddiee0 contributionsDelicious food and great company! We booked a cooking class following a friend’s recommendation and we were not disappointed! We were catered for (being vegetarian) and thoroughly enjoyed learning about traditional Balinese cooking and life. Would suggest booking a morning class as that included a trip to a local food market.Written January 4, 2020
- Sparkykat0 contributionsReal good experienceJust outside of Ubud, the jambangan cooking school is located in a small kampoegn. After a visit to the local market for some ingredients you’ll transported to the location. The whole family participates in teaching you a couple of local dishes. Real good activity for half a day or soWritten September 19, 2019
- Madeleine_Austria0 contributionsExceptional Cooking ClassJambangan Cooking Class is absolutely fabulous. Pick-up from hotel included. Authentic family business, very funny and friendly. Fresh ingredients, lots of different dishes, traditional Cooking methods, very well organised - you even get recipes and a certificate. I recommend it very much. Memories that will stay.Written August 2, 2019
- pimplepopperDO0 contributionsAuthentic cultural experience with a sweet Balinese family! This class could be considered a cultural enrichment immersion. The driver picked up our group of eight. He took us to a rice paddy where he described how the rice is planted, cultivated and harvested. He described the labor involved and the types of rice grown. It certainly gave a deeper appreciation to all of the rice I eat - and waste. Like all the Balinese we met, he is a joyful spirit. The next stop was his home which houses the cooking school. He described the home setup in Bali, the buildings and how families transition through them, as well as the home temple. We were taken to the (outdoor) kitchen where all the raw ingredients awaited us. We worked diligently chopping and grinding. Cooking was done over portable gas stoves and with coconut oil that was hand-pressed and boiled by the family that day. The teachers (the family) made the class so much fun with their warm and funny personalities! We ate soup first while the meat cooked. We then ate our meal and returned to the kitchen to prepare dessert. It was a very special evening and the family made it even more fun. I’m so thankful we did this!Written April 26, 2019
- Stephie C0 contributionsGreat Cooking class experience!!The class started with a visit to the local market where we were shown around the different stalls and were explained the different local ingredients.. The traditional family home where the class takes place is quite beautiful and you are given a lesson on the design and layout of Balinese homes. The class, given by the same family members, integrates ingredients, culture and cooking quite well, the explanation of each dish is clear, and the food absolutely delicious. Everyone is really kind. If you are looking for a cooking class, Jambangan is definitely recommended!Written March 31, 2019
- Sarah O0 contributionsFantasticLoved this cooking experience in Bali. We were staying in Ubud and were collected and brought to the family compound, very comfortable. The class was very well run and we also learnt a lot about Balinese culture and how they live in their family compound. We also loved finding out how coconut oil is made! So interesting. The cooking was very well guided but at the same time you get total hands on experience making it all. The food was so delicious. We were delighted to get our certificate at the end and the recipes so we can introduce our friends and families to the delicious Balinese food! Can't recommend this experience enough for anyone looking for an authentic Bali cooking class.Written January 27, 2019
- trvlNlrn0 contributionsA must-do in Ubud! While is Bali this was once of the best experiences we had, which says a lot because there are so many amazing things to do in Bali. Made, our hostess was extremely welcoming and informative and made us feel like family. I felt like I was learning to cook with a relative. The recipes were surprising easy and not as intimidating as you would think such delicious food would be. We attended that class in the afternoon so we missed the morning market but on future visits to Ubud we will definitely being doing it again, this time in the morning to catch the market. It was such an amazing time I'm recommending it to EVERYONE. Love you Made and family!Written January 3, 2019
- anitsirhc19800 contributionsSo much more then a cooking class! This was such an amazing experience. We learned so much about the Balinese culture. The lady who runs this (Madi) is the cutest human EVER!! She brings you into her home and shows you where she grows her food, and teaches you all about the customs and traditions that the Balinese people follow. We where lucky enough to be there during Galungan so her home and village were so colorfully decorated. The food was AMAZING, and she made cooking fun.Written December 26, 2018

- 1973JNeill0 contributionsOne of the best Bali experiencesDid 2 cooking schools in Bali and this was definately the best for authentic experience. Our host were amazing. We learnt everything you need to know about the production of rice on our trip to the school. My daughter and I loved that we made everything from scratch the traditional way. I'm sure they have a blender hidden to make their own paste 😉. We were the only 2 in the Class so we made to much food. They even packed the left overs up for our dinner. Will definately return.Written December 15, 2018
- LIKN0 contributionsSuper nice cooking classIt was a great experience. The family was soo nice, explaining not just about cooking but traditon, religion and rice... We had good fun, a lot delicious food to eat and recipes to take with us.Written December 12, 2018
- chloerose120 contributionsAmazing hosts and food - we will be returning! We had an amazing experience today with Jambangan cooking class. We were referred through someones blog and are so happy we chose such an amazing place. The cooks, guides and owner were so welcoming and happily helped out with all of our cooking queries. This is a must see if you are in Ubud- lovely family atmosphere. Couldn’t recommend enough.Written December 10, 2018
- WhatDoesntSuck0 contributionsBEST Cooking Class Experience EverStarting from the extremely friendly guide and hotel pick-up, we started straight to the local market to learn about and buy all the veggies, rice and herbs we would cook with. Stopping in the rice fields before going to the cooking school, we learned about the process of growing and harvesting rice. We were welcomed so warmly into the home, met their amazing family team and had an absolute blast cooking together, 9 dishes in all and we were left STUFFED. So much better than Thai cooking classes where you just make spring rolls and pad Thai - we made salads and sauces I’ve never heard of before and all was DELICIOUS! Would come back in a heartbeat, great place to bring family and friends.Written November 9, 2018

We cooked some classic and excellent balinese dishes with Wayan and his family. Wayan and his family are so friendly people and have given us a really good access to balinese kitchen. I can recommend Jambangan Bali Cooking class to everybody who are looking for a good price-performance ratio!

This was a brilliant experience. We got picked up by the super friendly and outgoing Gus who brought us and the rest of the group to the market in the morning and explained the variety of fruits and vegetables! We had some time left so he suggested going to the Coffee Plantation which was an added bonus with complimentary tea and coffee. The cooking class itself was full of fun and so informative. The food and company was epic and would recommend anyone to try it out if you’re in Bali! Thank you Gus, Rakesh and Putu for such an enjoyable experience.

I joined the Jambangan cooking class, and it was absolutely amazing! The atmosphere was so warm and inviting, and our instructor was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly passionate. We learned how to make some authentic dishes, and I loved every minute of it.
The hands-on experience was fantastic, and I appreciated how we got to explore local ingredients and flavors. Plus, the food we cooked was simply delicious! It felt like a true cultural immersion. If you’re in Bali and looking for fun activities, I highly recommend this class. Can't wait to try these recipes back home!

This cooking class is incredible! I highly recommend the afternoon class - even though you won’t see the market (it is only open in mornings) instead you can experience coffee and tea tastings. So relaxing and fun!
The cooking class itself was amazing. We learnt so much and ate some of the best food we’ve had in Bali. Gus and his family are so generous, it’s a privilege to learn from them.

We loved the whole experience. Gus and his family were lovely and the food we produced/ate was possibly the best food we had in Ubud. It was really tasty and it also expanded our knowledge of Balinese cuisine because if we had seen some of the menu items on a restaurant menu, we might not have picked them but now, we probably would.
Highly recommended… 👍🏼

Wife and I are extremely glad we took the "Jambangan Bali Cooking Class".
We were welcomed into a Balinese home and explained lots about family and the way of living in Bali.
The atmosphere from the start was friendly, funny and welcoming - shoutout to cooking instructor Putu "the handsome" and Gus :)
The cooking class is for everyone, you cannot mess up the cooking even if you want to.
Food is made by attendees and is eaten freshly cooked at the place.
In the end an amazing, tasty, funny, learning experience.
Would recommend to anyone!

We were picked up from our hotel and headed to the local market in Ubud. We didn't buy the ingredients for the course because the market is open from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. (Putu did it at 4 a.m.).
Welcomed with a refreshing drink, we were able to make an offering then we began the cooking class.
There were only 5 of us, which was very nice.
The dishes were good and plentiful.
Finally we were taken back to our hotel at the beginning of the afternoon with the recipes which they took care to print in our language.
We recommend this immersion in Balinese cuisine.

We took the evening cooking class and the family was amazing. They normally pick you up at your hotel but we had already booked a yoga class and massage at the Yoga Barn. Wayan was early and picked us up and drove us to the family property where we cooked 8 different items. We were also blessed to make an offering which was quite moving. We felt like family the entire afternoon. They were the most gracious and kind family and if we had had our sarongs would have allowed us to go in their family temple. We left with a certificate and all the recipes we made. It exceeded our expectations and would recommend this experience as we felt like we were “living with locals”. Thank you Wayan to you and your cousin 🙏🏻o

As part of our trip to Indonesia, we were offered a cooking course in Ubud, which my wife and I booked instead of a bike tour through the rice fields. We were excited to see what to expect, whether we would be shown "only" how to prepare Nasi Goreng or Bami Goreng, for example.
We were not picked up from our hotel on time and picked up other course participants from other hotels. We were on the road for about 45 minutes before we met up with the rest of the participants at the Tegallalang market. The driver, a family member of the organizing family, spoke good English and explained a lot about the area, rice cultivation, culture and religion during the trip.
At the market, we were shown many classic ingredients of Balinese cuisine, and anyone who wanted could try one or the other. Since the market starts at 3:00 a.m., some products were no longer available or had been very carefully selected. Our driver told us that he and other family members had already been at the market at 4:00 a.m. and bought the ingredients for our cooking course.
We were warmly welcomed into a typical Balinese house with its own shrine. We were explained the construction and the ideology behind it and we learned how to make an offering to the gods, making the bowls ourselves.
The "cooking school" is under a shady open-air pavilion. We learned some classic dishes and prepared the ingredients for them in the classic way, using good old handcraft, using mortars and pestles. Some ingredients were already prepared, so there was enough time for us all to prepare the individual dishes (vegetarian and non-vegetarian) ourselves under instruction. In the end, we had a real feast that left us all more than full and happy!
If you are interested in cooking, you should definitely book here.

We were a party of 2 but there was a party of 3 girls and two other parties of 2. I cannot see it as an issue other than the maximum size of the group on the day. We went to the markets first in a mini bus followed by hands on preparation, cooking and eating. It was my favourite activity on the whole trip!
