- 496shutingl0 contributionsEnjoyable and informative activity! My friend and I enjoyed the whole event very mush. It’s 30mins driving from Ubud Sayan(Naya Ubud) and they offer pick up service. The chef Dewa gave us a very informative and interesting tour of their village which is beautiful, well maintained, and ecofriendly. You get to learn the life of traditional Balinese people. The cooking class starts after the tour. I’d suggest find at least 2-3 people to join the class together as the food will be too much for one person. Lastly, the food was 100% amazing! Highly recommended!Written October 18, 2024

- c0cktailg0 contributionsAmazing food and a brilliant family experience! This was a brilliant experience. We took a tour of a market place first, learning about the many different local ingredients, then went back to the farm to cook. The course was really great for a family activity - there were many different courses to prepare so everyone was involved. Our host was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, inviting us into her home and showing us the workings of a typical Balinese farm. And the food we made together was absolutely delicious! My only regret is that I'd eaten breakfast beforehand (still we are able to box up the copious quantities of food we didn't eat there and are looking forward to having them later!)Written August 4, 2024

- elizabethbF2031DN0 contributionsBest experience in Bali! This is NOT a ‘tourist’ trap. This is the real deal. We learned (and then ate) a 4 course meal made with fruit, herbs and veggies from the garden, fresh chicken (from their chickens) - and let’s not forget the best green beans of my life, and (of course) rice from their farm. Everything was cooked in home made coconut oil made by their neighbor (ummm yes I’m bringing a few bottles home with me). That was just the tip of the iceberg! We were given a tour of the family compound and had all the temples and lifestyle explained to us. A tour of the garden - and then were given a treat of a traditional Balinese dance from her niece and experienced her ‘hobby’ which is weaving with the hand died yarns from her garden (yes I bought one of these exquisite pieces to hang in my house). I experienced Soooooo much love and warmth and generosity. This is the best thing I have done in Bali so far! Do this first so you can then approach the culture with a foundatiinal understanding as you move forward with your days. Oh, and they have a super cute brand new guest house with an infinity pool overlooking the rice gardens. I’ll definitely stay here in the future.Written June 22, 2024
- clairelO8731FT0 contributionsWonderful experience, fun night had by all!We had a wonderful evening with chef Santika! I would highly recommend this experience to anyone! He picked us up at our accommodation and drove us to his village about 20 minutes from Ubud and was happy to answer all our many questions along the way. Santika’s place is very scenic (he also has accommodation available there which looked great) and the kitchen fully equipped. The cooking class was very interesting, informative and fast paced. We learned how to make lots of dishes and I actually feel confident I could make them again at home. They all tasted AMAZING! It was a real privilege to get such hands on instruction from such an experienced chef. For anyone with food allergies just remind Santika beforehand and he can cater to your needs. For kids, be careful, the knives are extremely sharp!Written June 21, 2024

Very authentic Balinese cooking experience. Putu picked us up and dropped us off to our accommodation. We prepared about 6 dishes and she and her family were very supportive and helpful with my 3 children in the kitchen (aged 6, 9 and 9). The dishes were all delicious and there was way too much food for us to eat.
She also showed us how rice grows and was very knowledgeable of the local area.
I would highly recommend this cooking class as an authentic Balinese experience.

We spent a great cooking evening with Putu! The package includes transportation to and from the accommodation and a tour of Putu's home with garden and temple. Very interesting and authentic to learn about the life of a local Balinese family. The ingredients for cooking were mostly from Putu's own garden! We have prepared various traditional Balinese dishes and learned a lot about the preparation process. The food tasted fantastic and was by far the best food we had eaten so far! If you want to experience an authentic cooking evening, we can definitely recommend Putu's cooking class. Suksmā Putu!

This was a highlight of our trip to Bali! We were welcomed with such hospitality and generosity. The class was private and did not feel rushed at all as Putu walked us through the 5 recipes and showed us the garden where all the ingredients were grown (even the rice was grown there). The food was plentiful and delicious and Putu catered vegan for me and normal for my boyfriend.
I would recommend this experience to anyone it was truly a great taste of Balinese culture and a special time shared!

Amazing experience, Putu is so friendly and takes the time to explain how her lovely traditional Balinese home is laid out and what each one of the buildings and temples is for, and greets you with an amazing fruit selection and a refreshing coconut. She shows you around her garden as well with all the crops that they produce before starting the cooking class and then take to get started! She leads you so calmly every step of the way and makes recommendations on salt/sweet/spice to suit your palate! One of our best experiences in Bali, we would highly recommend and will be back to visit Putu in the future!

TLDR: Spend that extra money to have a personal cooking with Putu. It is your party and your party alone. She is friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and a fantastic cook.
I booked the 11AM cooking class with Putu and she makes it an effort to contact you a few days before your cooking class. If you are staying out side of Ubud, like I did in Jimbaran, you can take a Grab (Uber) or private driver to a meet up point. There she will pick you up and take you to her home! She gave us a tour of her home and gave some refreshments. I suggest you get to know her because she ask a lot of questions about you and where you come from. During the cooking, she will show you the ingredients and ask you to prep them and cook them. Every dish we made was delicious! Keep in mind that Balinese people do like their food spicy to let her know in advance if you cannot handle spicy food. In the end, drove me back to my pick up location but stopped by a few shops to help me but good such as a sarong! I definitely recommend her service. Thank you Putu!!!

I had a ton of fun learning to cook from chef Putu. She’s patient, motherly and very experienced. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn more on Balinese cooking and culture! Yes, it’s not just about the food. Putu goes the extra mile and teaches you about her home, her village and the culture from the very moment you get into the car. She and her family are all so very approachable and welcoming, and entertained the many questions I had with the warmest of smiles. On top of that, we had kids in my small group and she even taught a six year old how to properly cut vegetables. The only downside of the tour was that the food was so good, it had set the standards for every other meal I had in Ubud after ;D

We did this class as part of our honeymoon and really enjoyed it. Putu’s English is excellent and she was really clear in her explanations. She’s an incredibly impressive woman who has built a business from nothing, and it was amazing to hear her story too.
We were shown around her house and family temple, learning a lot about Balinese culture and religion, as well as getting to try new fruits and herbs. Most of what you cook with is grown in their own family garden, which is really nice.
The food was plentiful. We made five savoury dishes - rice with sweet potato, fried tempeh, a salad, satay and corn cakes. We left incredibly full and with takeaway boxes! I don’t eat chilli but my husband did, and this was catered for, which was the big plus for us over a larger group cooking class where food is shared. She also sent us really thorough instructions via WhatsApp to recreate everything we’d made at home.
Ladies - to note, you will be asked if you’re menstruating before you enter the family temple (as it’s not permitted by their religion for women to enter on their period) which I wasn’t expecting! Not an issue, but just something to be aware of.
The class is expensive for Ubud and there are plenty of cheaper options, but it’s absolutely worth it.

If I sound like I’m gushing it’s because I am! This was an outstanding experience and window into family life in Bali.
Right from the moment of our hotel pick-up Putu & her husband Pastor displayed warm hospitality, sharing local knowledge on the way to their family home. After touring their compound and gaining an understanding of family/village living and their Hindu faith our cooking class commenced. With most of the ingredients sourced directly from their property their was no doubt we were about to feast on quality and delicious Balinese cuisine.
The cooking process was enjoyable, informative and relatively simple (I think we’ll be able to tackle most of the recipes at home) and the fruits of our labour were sensational.
If you are looking to experience true Bali, then this is an activity you should absolutely do.
I give it 10/10!
Big thanks ro Putu and her whole extended family for making every moment from pick up to drop off enjoyable.

Great one on one experience with a wonderful family just north of Ubud.
We got picked up from our accommodation in Sanur by the hosts for an extra small charge but if you are in Ubud it's included. On arrival we got a tour of the house and the garden and then got on to the cooking.
We were allowed to try all activities at our own pace and got to eat as we went. The cooking was in a lovely outdoor setting and aprons were supplied.
Putu was so generous with her tips and knowledge. Local life went on around us with next doors ducks trying to come and get food and roosters in the background.
And then we got to eat all the food we had made enjoying the peace and quiet of the local village. Each dish was exceptional with the long bean dish declared the favourite.
A great way to spend a few hours with a local family in a private experience you won't forget.

We had Putu all to ourselves for our cooking class, and the pick up and drop off from our hotel in Ubud was smooth even though our hotel wasn't listed. Putu told us about her village and their farm which provides the majority of the food for her entire family, including rice. She showed us around her home and took us through the family temple explaining what each aspect meant to them.
Her outdoor kitchen is very well organised - cooking is done in an aluminium kettle over a fire, a wok with gas burner, and a small charcoal griller. We were presented with a fresh coconut juice from her farm on arrival. We had a special request to be taught how to make sambal and Putu was very happy to oblige. We made chicken satay, tempeh manis, rice with sweet potato, corn fritters and urab. Putu watched us closely to assess our chopping and cooking skills, then gave clear instructions demonstrating correct techniques when needed. The food was delicious and Putu answered our many questions - like why is Balinese tempeh so much nicer than Australian? (Because it's made fresh).
It is very good value for money given the outstanding experience, and delicious food that we can now make ourselves. We will go back for more classes next time we visit Bali.
Terimah Kasih Putu and family!

Hello! Where are you located? We would be travelling from uluwatu. Do you have any spaces this week Wednesday or Thursday? Thank you!

Hi Kristina, I suggest booking directly on Tripadvisor, it will show the dates available and after your booking it will allow you to exchange messages with the host directly.
Putu's home is in a small village not far from Ubud, so quite a ride from Uluwatu. Just leave with some time to spare as traffic can be intense, depending on the time of the day.
Hope it helps
