Good show very entertaining.. loved the start with the make up .. and the way it got the crowd involved show was the right amount of time .. we where there too early and had to sit around .. I think the start time should be advertised a bit more I struggled to find it

Go a bit later if you don’t want to see in the makeup session. Plenty to see and do around the theatre. Cafes, ferry and markets.

It was an experience of acting as I have never seen before. The commentator asked the main actor to express various emotions to drumming accompaniment. He was brilliant with eyebrows, rolling eyes and hand movements. Doing their makeup on stage was also brilliant. I enjoyed the first stages of makeup and demonstration more than the actual drama performance.

My friend and I toured Kerala for two weeks with a specifically organized travel plan for us by Expertise Travels based on our interests on nature and culture. We were picked up from the airport in Kochi and taken amazing care of for the whole trip by the agency and our drivers until we returned to Kochi. For the two weeks we got to visit beautiful destinations and experience the best things Kerala has to offer: serene stay by a river and visit the waterfalls in Athirappilly, sightseeing around Varkala and swimming in the Indian Ocean, relaxing on a private house boat while sailing the Alleppey backwaters watching birds and bats, enjoying the fresh air in the post card -like sceneries of forested mountains and tea plantations in Munnar, and visiting a spice garden and an elephant camp in Thekkady. Our longest stay was in the lovely Munnar, where we were thrilled to see a fusion show of local traditional dances of Kathakali as well as Kalaripayattu martial arts show. In addition, we went to an early morning jeep ride to see the sunrise on a mountain top and then other local sightseeing. I was also very happy to have a relaxing ayurvedic massage and visit a chocolate shop, a botanical garden, and a tea factory. Still, to me the highlights of our trip were our walk in Eravikulam National park seeing local flora and the endangered Nilgiri Thar, as well as night trekking in Periyar tiger reserve, where we were lucky to see an elephant in the wild together with Sambar deer, gaurs, and an owl. As nature lovers who also value space and calm, the agency had booked us lovely and tidy hotels with peaceful and green surroundings in every location. We were also always taken to eat in nice restaurants and cafes with delicious foods on the way and we never got sick from the food. Our drivers were true professionals who we could trust with everything. For the first three days we were taken excellent care of by Rajesh. For the remaining of our journey, we were safely driven and guided by Saji, who was always friendly, calm, and made sure we had everything we needed. We could always adjust the plan according to our wishes and did not need to worry about anything. Having Expertise Travels and the drivers arranging the trip made our first time traveling in India very easy and let us just to enjoy our unforgettable holiday.

The entire experience was great, an old art like no other that you can experience with the help of this cultural center. It starts with the painting part, then a demonstration of the expressions and an explanation of the kathakali , and the last part is a played scene. Highly recommend! The actors were amazing!

This was a highlight of our experience in India. We watched the dancers put make up on for a few minutes prior to the show, and we’re exhilarated by the colors, music and dances.

It was awesome the whole show from make up to the performance. Very punctual started and completed on time. Mind blowing experience.

We got there early to witness the makeup artists at work; it was totally worth it. As the performance has no words and thus requires facial emotions, they showed how effectively the eyes can be employed. The show was captivating and perhaps the perfect time for tourists. I really liked the drums in the music.

One of the best places to go if you only have a short amount of time to see the culture of Kerala. Here, you can see the tradition of Kerala in the form of dance and acting. They will prepare and put on their makeup in front of you so you can see how the fascinating dancers of Kerala do their makeup and look. This is a must-see location if you are in or near Kerala. It takes about two hours to learn about the culture and tradition of one of the oldest communities in India.

When the performers sit in front of you on stage, doing their makeup with tiny hand-held mirrors and the lightest of touches as they morph their facial characteristics, you are drawn into the show from the time you enter the theatre. After about 30 minutes, the dancers leave the stage to be replaced by the musician with his enormous drum, who then joins in with the presentation of the amazing eye movements and hand gestures used to portray the emotions that are continually changing during the performance. Immediately after that is finished, the dancers return to the stage fully costumed in their ornate costumes and make-up to bring a mythical tale of princes and demons to life. One that should not be missed!

A really essential experience for any tourist to Cochin, this fascinating and amusing evening! It's possible to arrive at 5 o'clock and observe makeup being performed, which is incredibly fascinating. A brief excerpt of Kathakali is then shown after a demonstration of the dance's symbolic connotations. A must watch!
