We enjoyed this tour but 2 out of 3 hours was spent on public transport including the cable car. During the cable car ride (which lasted around 45 min), Walter didn't share too much information to set the context about the place, Medellin, etc.
The tour itself was good, and Walter talked about the graffiti, significant past events in the area etc., but didn't go into as much depth as I would've liked, especially given that it's a paid tour focused on a small part of the larger Medellin city.

Walter took us on one of the greatest walking tours ever. He speaks perfect English and has done this tour over 3,000 times (!!!) so he knows his stuff...

His comments on the history of Medellin and Comuna 13, including the social aspects and the effects of the government in integrating the various communities were fascinating.

The cable cars have provided access for the poorer residents to come down from their hillside homes and have allowed tourists and gringos (like me) to visit places like Comuna 13.

The graffiti on the walls, the performing dancers, the boutique shops and the street life are not to be missed. You really feel this tour. You aren't just looking out some tour bus window or wandering around with other tourists going into churches, museums and overpriced shops and restaurants.

Don't worry, it is perfectly safe and the locals look to tourists to support their businesses and could not be friendlier.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring your camera.

And make sure to tip your guide well. What is usually a small amount of money to us (especially considering the overall cost of our trips) is a lot of money to them.... and they deserve it.

I highly recommend this tour! It was the perfect balance between fun and educational. Our guide Walter provided extensive insight into the politics and history of the Comuna and Medellín and was more than happy to answer any questions we had. I felt like I learned so much about the city and Walter expertly explained the meaning behind the murals of Comuna 13. Hearing the stories behind the art is something I will never forget and really helped me better understand the culture of the neighborhood, the City, and Colombia.

The views of the City from Comuna 13 are amazing and there is lots to be entertained by along the tour—including a rap battle that had everyone clapping and dancing. If you want to have fun and also learn a lot about the City, you have to book this tour (and ask for Walter if you can)!

Not worth the money - spend more time just using Medillin’s public transport than seeing comuna 13.

Normally I go on free walking tours funded by tips, but this was on a Sunday and the only tour I could find running that day. Would have had felt generous tipping half the amount it cost.

We had 14 people in our group, yet the tour was priced for a small group it seemed (90 mil pesos). We met at 3 with our guide who was from Chicago and spoke good English, but spent the first hour travelling on the metro to ride one stop on the cable car. It was only there that we could really hear some proper information from the guide after we got off - we were too many and couldn’t fit in the same cable car to chat on the way. After a brief chat we then took the cable car down, rode the metro and then a bus to comuna 13 and then walked up and back, before riding the bus again and the metro. In 13 there was barely any explanation about any graffiti except when we specifically asked (tried to refer to take another tour they offered). On the bus back asked about what we could do the next day and what would be open in Medillin as it was a public holiday, and only response got was a flyer for another tour he was pushing for cocoa, and he said nothing useful and cares too much about just trying to make money.

In hindsight, tour wasn’t worth much more than the bus/metro fares they paid.

Hello Andrew, we only had one guide available on Sunday because it was a holiday weekend AND the when the guide agreed to work there were 7 guests booked on the tour and 7 guests booked last minute for the tour. We have been hosting a local experience for 8 years which includes a ride on the metro, cable car and bus, which the vast majority of guests truly enjoy. There is no other way to get to the community unless you take a taxi or Uber, but that is not the experience tour companies provide to Comuna 13. As you mentioned, it was a National holiday the next day on Monday and most businesses are closed and we know many travelers arrive not knowing it's a holiday, many are left with nothing to do with many businesses closed for the day, the guide offered to work on the holiday, provided guests with information on what to do on Monday the holiday, 5 of the guests on the tour with you signed up for the tour on Monday and had a great time exploring another part of the city. We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the overall experience. Hope that you enjoy the rest of your time in Medellín.

We booked the Sunday morning trip to Comuna 13. Our guide Walter was excellent and provided a first class insight into the history, politics and communities of the Comuna, Medellin and Colombia.

The pace of the tour was well managed, with ample time for photo stops and questions. The Comuna was very busy on Sunday morning and had a lot of great energy, which Walter leveraged well.

I would thoroughly recommend this tour, which was also of good value. We did a similar tour back in 2018 which was not a patch on Walter’s tour.

what a great tour! We had Oscar as our tour guide abs he is excellent! He speaks great English Ave is very knowledgeable of la comuna 13. He gave an in-depth history lesson on the area, its resurgence, and the resiliency of the people of comuna13. It's a great walk up to the top, with lots of local shops, restaurants, galleries, and bars. Imagine a huge block party with art and music. Oscar our amazing led the way showing us the spectacular views from the top. The tour includes bus fare, metro fare Ave you even get to ride the metro cable to San Javier! very cool! Again I cannot tell you how much fun it was! We even stopped at a local spot on the way up to have drinks from the local fruits. I recommend maracauya (passion fruit) or Lulo. Overall, thank you to Oscar for his excellent service! Muchas gracias Oscar!!
P.S be nice and tip your tour guide!

We took a cab from our hotel and mat the guide in their local office. We walked with the guide to the base of the escalators. There were street dancers/acrobatic performers. It was lively, energetic and the murals on the walls and buildings were impressive. Our guide spoke English very well and he explained the meaning and symbolism of the murals. I highly recommend this tour!

Oscar is a very capable tour guide. He is as accommodating as he is well informed. We saw several areas of the city including the Botero statues in the central square, the cable cars with a view of the different corners of the city from high altitude, and we concluded by visiting commune 13. Oscar told the story of how the neighborhood was "liberated" by a bloody incursion by the Colombian government, a story that I didn't know before. So much of the art in the neighborhood alludes to the events of this massacre. Without Oscar's expert explanations, I'd have just thought they were colorful graffiti.

Definitely take this tour! So educational and extremely fun! Our guide Sebastian was excellent! He made the tour! He was so kind, accommodating, and had something special for everyone on the tour (for example my husband loves beer and Wu-Tang and he made sure to stop at this really cool bar that overlooked the area). It wouldn't have been the same experience without Sebastian because he knew all the stories behind the art and took us to local art galleries - not cheesy tourists stops. I highly recommend this tour and our guide was amazing!

Although it may be a little touristy Comuna 13 still has to be seen. Meeting point was Poblado Metro Station. After a short Metro ride and bus trip we were there. Walter was super guide explaining the history and showing us the numerous graffiti works throughout Comuna 13. After this was ride on the cable car to take in more incredible views of Medellin. Definitely recommend this tour.
