- irvingzhang0 contributionsMust-do experience outside MedellinThis tour exceeded our expectations. We learned a lot about the history of coffee and how it started in Colombia. In addition, our guide Dani and Alexa taught us the process from planting, harvest, filtering, drying, roasting, and then tasting. We got to harvest our own coffee fruit in the hills and understand the art and complexity of the entire process. The lovely people at the farm cooked us a wonderful home-cooked meal where all the ingredients came from the farm. At the end, we did a tasting tour and tried various coffee - with the natural and honeyed our favorite. Highly recommend this tour, and shoutout to Dani for being such a fantastic guide. 5/5Written January 2, 2024
- W773YNtoml0 contributionsWonderfully full sensory experience of coffeeThe tour was enjoyable, educational, and experiential! Walter was our guide and he took us through a journey of coffee and of the farm. The context you take away from it will help you appreciate every cup of coffee that you drink from here on. Beyond the coffee itself, the farm and the farm house was an elegant walk back in time, and a living museum. There is also a great view of Medellin that comes with the tour. Well worth the visit, and it supports small businesses by cutting out the corporate middle men.Written November 22, 2023

- amandasQ3349NF0 contributionsBEST coffee tourAbsolutely go here. It's an amazing coffee tour and the staff are amazing, I only have praises to sing of this hacienda. It's stunning with great views, but that's only the start. This is a whole day tour and the tour guide was amazing (wish I remembered her name). You feel like you're part of the family! You get a little introduction to coffee production and then you get to don the proper attire and hike up into the hill to pick your own beans! Afterwards, you learn about the drying process and are shown around (including their sweet, adorable animals). Then they bring you through the stunning house and feed you the most amazing home-cooked lunch. After lunch you do a wonderful coffee tasting. You will learn so much! We brought some coffee back to the states with us and will definitely be ordering more. If you're interested in a coffee tour, don't bother looking at anything else. It won't be as good, I guarantee it. Plus, they send a car to pick you up and drop you off! Seriously. If you're in Medellin, book this tour NOW!Written August 21, 2022
- davett270 contributionsDelicious Coffee TourThey picked us up near our hotel and a driver took us on a scenic drive to La Casa Grande Coffee Hacienda. Our guide was Juliana. Our small tour group of about 12 people dressed up in the traditional poncho, hat, and coffee bean basket. We were given a sample of their coffee, told about the history of coffee and then it was time for a short climb to their coffee plants to pick our own coffee beans. The views of the mountains are spectacular. Then we were shown how the beans are processed and the differences between the different blends of coffee. We then sat down to a delicious lunch with Juliana and two of other ladies that were guiding us. After the delicious lunch and the good company, we tasted several different blends of coffee. The house itself is very old, colonial house that has been meticulously taken care of to keep its historic charm. The surrounding area is beautiful and the ladies attending our group were great. We would definitely visit again.Written July 19, 2022
- lauwsplace0 contributionsWell organized, beautiful location, very friendly people! They have there own transport but we took a taxi that brought us here, was easy to find with instructions of the kind hostess. It’s a beautiful location just outside of Medellin centre so nice clear air and superbeautiful nature! We learned a lot about coffee, picked our own beans and had a great Colombian lunch. Last part is a nice coffee tasting. First thing we will do when we are back home is trowing away our crappy-George-Clooney-coffee-machine, this was really a eye-opener and I would highly recommend this tour! Available in good English and Spanish.Written February 26, 2020
- OJodds0 contributionsVery good experienceReally enjoyed the guided tour at the hacienda. The guide Daniella explained everything about the production and showed how they choose the beans. The trip ends with a great lunch inside the hacienda, followed by coffee tasting. Good explanations both in english and spanish. Absolutely recommended to do this trip.Written December 18, 2019
- PatDP500 contributionsWonderful day!Our hotel booked this tour for us, (Hotel 574 - fantastic!), and we did not know what to expect. We thought we would be going on a bus but we actually had a driver pick us up and drive us up there. It was just the two of us that day and what a wonderful experience. The setting is beautiful, up in the mountains of Santa Elena. We had the manager/guide Elizabeth to ourselves. She is a lovely woman and being able to chat with her the whole time really added to the experience. We had to dress up in ponchos and hats, (I was a bit sceptical at first, but I got into it), and we walked through the whole process on the farm from start to finish - well almost, the beans are sent away for roasting. We had lunch in the house with Elizabeth and her father-in-law. That was delicious and really enjoyable. I'd love to know how they cooked the pork. It was divine! After lunch we had a coffee tasting and we got to taste the difference between the ways the beans were processed/dried etc. after harvesting. This was one of the best days out we had from Medellin. Elizabeth is a wonderful host and I would definitely recommend this trip as a 'must do'.Written August 8, 2019

- judykdiaz0 contributionsLooking for a coffee farm that's not too far from the center of Medellin?La Casa Grande Coffee Hacienda is the place! The casa grande family offers a special tour of their coffee farm and hacienda. The house has such history and the family has worked hard to keep it in its orginial form. Elizabeth and her father-in-law were very welcoming and friendly. Luis taught us about coffee and allowed us to have a hands on experience by showing us how to pick the coffee fruit and told us about what they do on the farm before the coffee bean is sold. The family also treated us to a delicious, home- made, family style lunch. At the end of the tour we participated in a coffee tasting while our 8 and 10 yr old children fed farm animals with Elizabeth. It was such a wonderful experience. We highly recommned it!Written July 17, 2019
- Selina P0 contributionsDon't miss this tour! :)I've been living in Medellin for 2 months and of all the tours I've taken, this is at the top of the list! It's a beautiful getaway in the gorgeous hills of Santa Elena. Just 20 minutes from busy Medellín, you can come here, breathe fresh air, learn everything you wanted to know about coffee, enjoy beautiful surroundings, and even an organic home-cooked lunch fresh from the garden with the sweet family who owns La Casa. This tour feels totally personalized and intimate - no cookie cutter touristy feel at all!! We all felt like friends being welcomed home :) Thank you Ellie and Luis and family!! I hope I'll be back soon!!Written July 2, 2019
- Ameryamery0 contributionsCoffee tourWe had SUCH an amazing time! Elizabeth was so lovely. The tour itself was beautiful and had a personal touch. we got to see how they grow and harvest the beans, plant some coffee trees and pick our own. There is also a little waterfall. Afterwards we got to try different kinds of coffee and have a delicious homemade lunch. It was incredible. You really felt like part of the family. Would 100% go again.Written June 7, 2019
- Ged_Ch0 contributionsGreat place, amazing experience.Just entering the place makes you feel like you are about to have an amazing experience! Words fall short to describe the views, the rooms, the learning experience, the staff and even their pets! We came for a trip and we left with both, a beautiful experience and a firm promise to come back... Thank you Elizabeth, for making us feel like home!Written May 28, 2019
- Cwazy G0 contributionsCome for the coffee, Stay for LolaLa Casa Grande has recently opened up the Hacienda for short stays and my friends and I were lucky enough to book the two biggest rooms while we were there. Our rooms (the principal and media) each had a queen sized bed, desk, and their own private bathroom. These rooms are also connected by a common room that serves as sort of a study with bookcases and desks. The media room also has a connecting door to another room with two single beds. The rooms were not originally built to be bedrooms (as it was a coffee house), so there are many doors and windows, the rooms. If you are someone who requires blackout curtains or complete darkness to sleep, no fear! The wooden windows and doors pretty much block out most, if not all the light. Great for hibernating. The beds are pretty comfortable, and they provide extra blankets as it can get a little cold at night. The bathrooms are pretty basic, and the hot water for the shower can get be a little tricky, but it was fine in fulfilling its intended purpose. I got the impression that toilet paper isn't typically flushed in South America, so something to take note of. In terms of meals, breakfast is included in your stay, and it is typically cooked by the lovely Marina, who always manages to surprise. Every meal was truly delicious, especially when you know that many of the ingredients (in particular the vegetables) are grown on the property or neighboring farms. Do not forget to try Don Pablo's 'secret' oil concoction that can be used at literally every meal! I have tried since to replicate it, but unfortunately I cannot seem to get the exact flavors. Lunch can be included at a small cost, and although dinner is not available, you have the option of using the kitchen to cook your own!. As the hacienda is up on Mt Elena, I would recommend doing a trip down into the city (or perhaps on your way back from a day trip in the city) to grab some groceries for the length of your stay so you are able to cook a meal when needed. Our hosts on the property have owned the hacienda for generations and the history shows. Everyone is very friendly, and the head of the house, Don Pablo, is always happy to talk about the history of the house. The family also live on the property, so in the event you have any issues or questions, they are easily and quickly addressed. Elizabeth was also great at providing recommendations and addressing all our logistical concerns. She effectively manages the coffee tours and touristy aspect of the house, and was our guide on the coffee tour - as you can imagine, she has great insight about the process, beans, and everything to do with the house as well. One night we even had a little dominoes party with the requisite Aguardiente! Anyone who stays here should expect to be treated like one of the family. What else? Well, those planning to stay should also be aware that the property has a bunch of pets - 4-5 dogs, 1 cat, a couple cows, pigs, and chickens! The farm animals are mostly out of sight, but the dogs and cats have reign of the property. In particular, Lola, the cutest little puppy runs about wherever she pleases. If you have allergies, you should be wary and be sure to have your antihistamines at hand, and be sure to give lots of love to the pups. The only downside of the hacienda were the mosquitoes or sandflies. They really come out at night, and the way the bites have stuck around I'm not convinced they're your average mosquitoes. There's plenty of bug spray around, but be warned! Between the view, fresh air, amazing hospitality, food, and relaxation, there's not too much more you could want. Love this place and can't wait to come back for another relaxing stay.Written April 30, 2019

My visit to La Casa Grande Hacienda was an unforgettable experience, and I can't recommend it enough! Our tour guide, Walter, was exceptional, offering the tour in English, which made it accessible and enjoyable for us. His assistant Liceth also helped to balance the tour.
This tour goes far beyond just seeing coffee plants. Walter provided a deep dive into the rich history, culture, philosophy, and science behind coffee production, both globally and right there on their farm. It was fascinating to learn about the intricate process of growing and brewing coffee, and how it differs from place to place. The coffee tasting session was a highlight, allowing us to truly appreciate the subtle and distinct differences among various coffees.
What sets this farm apart is the dedication to quality. The coffee produced here is a stark contrast to what you get from large, big-box companies. The attention to detail in every step of the process is evident in the taste of their coffee—each cup is a testament to their commitment to excellence.
If you’re passionate about coffee or just curious to learn more, this tour is a must. You'll leave with not just a great understanding of coffee, but also a newfound appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into creating a truly great cup.

This Bean to Cup Experience was a definite highlight of our group's trip. Our host, Julie was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and engaging. The tour felt very complete and well paced as we got to experience and participate in seeing the coffee go “from bean to cup."
Their space is beautiful, as we got to enjoy time both learning about their history, and interacting with the animals that they have on the farm (their dogs are extremely cute). At the end of the tour, it was fun to participate in a coffee tasting, where we were able to try 4-5 different samples from their farm. They were delicious, and we even bought beans to bring home.
The traditional Colombian lunch that the tour provided was everything that we could have asked for.
Lastly, this is a fun experience to do with other travelling groups as well.

This was a great experience, and I’m not even a coffee drinker! Danny and Alexa gave a great overview of how the entire process works from planting the seeds, tending the seedlings, harvesting, separating, soaking and roasting the beans (I’m skipping a lot!)
They bounced between English and Spanish easily, prepared an amazing lunch, and finished off with a tasting of all their different blends.
We connected with so many great people during our time there, and the entire experience was wonderful.
This is definitely a great tour to add to your itinerary, as coffee is one of Colombia’s great exports!

I chose this tour because it felt more authentic than many of the coffee tours in Medellín which are clearly artificial plantations designed for tourist entertainment (although I'm sure those are fun too!). Casa Grande is a 7th generation hacienda and genuine historic home, so while there's no "coffee spa" or swimming pool, it's beautiful, calm, and authentic.
I visited today for the coffee tour, booked directly via WhatsApp, and this was a perfect half day adventure. It's worth going for the views of Medellín alone, which are spectacular, but if you're remotely interested in coffee, you'll learn lots too (and enjoy the beautiful historic house, almost 200 years old). Our kind guide was very patient with the group's many questions and nothing was too much trouble. We learned the basics of coffee production, then went out into the plantation to pick some coffee cherries, processed them by hand, and visited other production areas, including drying and roasting to learn about the full process. After a lunch break, an absolutely delicious meal served family style in the house, we had the opportunity to taste several coffees and understand how the different processing styles affect the flavour. Say hi to the goat, dog and cats too!

The tour was incredible. Highly recommend if you want an immersive experience that has phenomenal views, education, delicious lunch, interesting information and top tier coffee. We had Alejandro as our guide, and hope we’re lucky enough to have him again when we go back. He was fantastic. He also went out of his way to translate for both English and Spanish speakers. 5 stars, 10 out of 10, two thumbs up, etc. Insert your favorite evaluative expression for a perfect experience and that’s both La Casa Grande Hacienda and Alejandro.

This experience was everything a coffee lover could ask for!
Julie and the Casa Grande team lead us through a rich and detailed account of coffee’s place in Colombia both historically and ecologically. Being able to pick coffee right from the plant while overlooking the endless green jungle was a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life! I learned so much about the immense amount of labour that goes into coffee production, and this experienced opened my eyes to new ways I can love coffee.
The provided home cooked meal in the historic Hacienda felt like I was welcomed as a guest of the family, and of course the provided coffee was nothing short of delicious.

What an amazing experience! I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this tour and I’m not even a coffee enthusiast. The hacienda is a beautiful 18th century house with a large serene property. We were greeted by Julie, our tour guide, who was so knowledgeable and kind. There are also a number of loose happy dogs on the property but they were very polite and honestly lovely.
I learned so much about the coffee plant, the harvesting process, and about how much labor goes into a cup of coffee! After walking around the property, we had some time to chill on the hacienda balcony porch and I just loved how peaceful it was. I never felt rushed and took my time enjoying the tour. We had a traditional family-style lunch and it was one of the top meals I has during this trip - amazing!
The tour finishes with a coffee tasting where we learn how flavours are added to coffee. They provided 5 espresso cups of coffee and I was so satisfied by the end of the tour. I ended up buying coffee beans and coffee tea. Without a doubt, I would recommend this tour to everyone I know.

From Poblado it took a 40 minutes ride to Santa Elena, a village in the east side mountains of Medellin. (about the same time to come back, plus a little extra for traffic. Beautiful landscapes within an immersive experience through the coffee plantations. There were a few surprises during the tour that I loved. No spoilers. We were served a traditional lunch with veggie options available also the juice was divine. You will taste and learn about different varieties and techniques to prepare the perfect cup while coffee tasting and paring dessert. I would suggest to wear long pants and covered comfortable shoes as you will be walking around the different areas. I was told to bring some bug spray, but didn't feel like I needed it. I do recommend sunscreen and sun protection. If you want to buy coffee from the hacienda bring cash or Venmo.
P.S. If you get Walter as your guide you are in for a treat!

As a bit of a coffee fanatic and a home roaster I have been wanting to visit a coffee farm for well over a decade. This experience did not disappoint. Elizabeth was an outstanding host and tour guide. Although I was somewhat familiar with the concepts of picking and processing coffee it was great to experience to see it live and I learned so much. I also enjoyed, with Elizabeth's guidance, tasting the various edible plants as we toured. I had never heard about half of those plants. I hope to find wasabi lettuce again one day.
The setting was beautiful and the home made lunch was delicious. Tasting the final product at the end of the tour was a great touch. The coffee is excellent. I am grateful to Elizabeth for sharing her knowledge and putting up with my multiple questions.
