- 370cassandraf0 contributionsUniversity of San Diego Colombia tripI recently went water rafting in Colombia, Medellín, with my peers from the University of San Diego grad program, and it was an unforgettable experience! Our guide, Didier, and the rest of the team were fantastic. Even though some parts of the rafting were a bit scary for some of us, the guides made sure the experience was fun and inclusive for everyone. They kept the energy high and ensured we all felt comfortable and safe. What stood out the most was how patient and approachable Didier and the other guides were. Even though I asked tons of questions throughout the trip, they never seemed bothered—in fact, they were always excited to share more and made the journey even more entertaining with their stories and tips. It felt like they truly cared about our experience. The communication with the guides was clear, and the safety measures were top-notch. I also felt incredibly secure knowing that we were surrounded by individual kayakers who helped ensure everyone’s safety. It gave me peace of mind, and I could really focus on enjoying the adventure. This experience not only allowed me to enjoy the beauty of Colombia but also brought me closer to my classmates, building trust and strengthening our bond as a group. We’ll definitely be talking about this trip for a long time. Highly recommend it!Written March 17, 2025
- samsF2483LX0 contributionsWebsite Misleading, Be Careful When BookingBe careful that you’re actually booking this tour! Despite this “small group” tour being the only tour to Guatapé listed on ExpeditionColombia’s website, some confusion during the booking process led to us being booked on another company’s tour bus of 40 people that included stops to a petting zoo with ponys on the way. This was a vastly different experience than we’d been sold on the site, and we left the tour early. When we asked for a refund, they refused, explaining that they actually offered three tours, and that we hadn’t booked the small group tour. Though the website lists this small group tour under the “Adventure” category (and lists no other Guatapé tours) apparently we’d been booked on the “Adventure” tour which is a completely separate and different option. Despite explaining this confusion, ExpeditionColombia blamed me for the miscommunication and was not willing to refund the tour, even though we departed from the tour group before even getting to Guatapé. Disappointing experience overall, be careful when booking with this company!Written March 14, 2025

- jessicasB5499VQ0 contributionsAmazing Waterfall TrekI had an amazing trek with expedition Colombia. Chris, our guide was super organized and very knowledgeable of the area. He kept us on track, together, and gave us great tips and facts about the area. He clearly cares about the land as he knows all the community members and picked up all the trash we saw. The waterfall was magical and such a fun hike. Totally recommend while you’re in the area!Written February 21, 2025

- kynnias20180 contributionsSuper green experienceOur view was amazing! We took lots of group and couple photos! Everything was green. We walked through the forest and were able to enjoy nature. The guides were helpful and friendly. We felt safe at all times. Also, it was our first experience eating by a river. It’s definitely worth taking this tour if you love nature and adventure.Written December 23, 2024
- Ben_Houghton780 contributionsGreat hiking, great guide, great choice.Brilliant morning! Picked up right on time by Marcos, English speaking Colombian, who proceeded to give me LOTS of information about Colombia and Medellin specifically. No topic was off limits and he was happy to give his personal opinions. I learned loads! The trek itself was great. Tough in places as it can be almost vertical but ropes are fixed which REALLY helps! Waterfalls were nice and Marcos knowledge continues with fauna and birding. We made good time, which probably explains why I was exhausted :) We didn't spend time at La Cathedral really though we walked through and you can see it. It's not really good etiquette to speak on Escobar so whilst Marcos was happy to, I decided to steer clear of the subject directly for long and instead discussed other aspects of Medellin. On the way back we stopped for freshly squeezed orange juice (much needed!) and I have to say the whole half day was like hiking with a friend. I'd recommend this as a good hike in beautiful scenery where you will learn a lot about Colombia.Written December 3, 2024

- Johnathanlcn0 contributionsMust-try rafting tour in MedellinI am a first-timer for rafting but totally enjoyed the experience. The tour started with a delicious homemade Colombian lunch prepared by our guide, who then took the time to explain the safety rules before we embarked on our journey. The entire adventure was incredibly fun and enjoyable, as we rafted along the river, taking in the natural landscape and learning about the culture and history of the area. The guides were very professional and took good care of all the participants, ensuring an unforgettable and safe experience. The tour is a 10 out of 10!"Written October 3, 2024

The Rio Samana Rafting Experience was the best time ever. It was filled with new experiences and packed adventure. The experienced guides, Jules and Didier were funny, friendly and made us feel safe and secure at all times. They provided our meals; never thought pasta by fire could taste so great. I’ve already shared this experience with so many family and friends. I will definitely do this again. I felt like Superwoman after I completed Day 2.

We went on a 2 day water rafting tour down the Samana. We had such a blast. Our guide Chris was extremely knowledgeable and extremely pleasant. Both Chris and Miles (both guides for our trip) cooked us dinner and set up our hammocks when we arrived to camp. They were both extremely pleasant and positive. They didn't risk any rapids that they thought our group couldn't handle. Safety was their first concern. Everything was excellent. Thank you so very much!

Spectacular! Amazing! Beautiful! Incredibly fun! We loved our overnight rafting trip with Expedition Colombia. This was, by far, the best experience of our trip to Colombia (and we loved all of Colombia) and our rafting trip ranks among the best adventures of our lives. We can't wait to go back.
The first thing you should know is that the folks with Expedition Colombia are great human beings who are dedicated to safety, environmental preservation, cultural protections and supporting ecotourism as a way of helping the people of Colombia. Of course, we loved the rafting and the beautiful river. The rapids were a blast. The waterfalls are stunning and our guides took us to splash around in one. Blue butterflies fluttered over the water. And swimming in the river was a blast.
We also expanded our knowledge of the Colombian people, learned more about their culture and unique plants only found in this area. In addition to leading great trips, the leaders of Expedition Colombia are working hard to fight dams on the beautiful free-flowing Río Samaná. If you raft or do other expeditions with Expedition Colombia, you not only will have a great time, you also will help support preservation efforts in this stunning area of Colombia. So, sign up and go on any trip these folks do. And we should all support their efforts to protect and save the river.
We loved the 2-day Río Samaná rafting trip. Sleeping in the jungle was a one-of-a-kind experience and two days of rafting was, of course, even better than one.
Here are more details. Our leader, Mael, is a world-class kayaker and an amazing person. You can trust him and the rest of the team 100%. Oscar and Jonatán piloted our rafts. All three of our guides were outstanding. Before our trip even began, Mael was keeping a close watch on the weather and strategizing about the safest plan for us. Since major rains were expected that could have caused flash flooding in the canyon where we originally planned to go, Mael wisely diverted us to a safe section of the upper Samaná. My husband and I are in our late 50s. Our adult kids are 25, 23 and 19. We're all good swimmers, but we only have a little rafting experience. So, I was nervous in advance of our trip. If you are like me, put your worries aside. You can trust Mael and the team at Expedition Colombia to take great care of you while also keeping the river pristine. In addition to putting safety first, they also set up a great camp and cooked delicious meals for us.
Here is some logistical information that might be helpful to you.
First, we are from Colorado in the U.S., where we have a relatively short rafting season that depends upon snowmelt. Colombia has a year-round rafting and kayaking season. Lucky them. The amount of water flowing through the rivers depends upon the rains. And, as you can tell by our experience, the folks at Expedition Colombia can plan safe, fun experiences whenever you visit. I think it's a little easier during the two dry seasons (in December and January and July and August).
Second, the water is warm compared to snow-fed U.S. rivers. You'll get splashed in the rapids, and that's definitely part of the fun.
Third, in the U.S., a lot of people where Tevas or river shoes to go rafting. I didn't understand why Expedition Colombia recommends closed-toe shoes. Here's the deal. You may do some hiking to put-ins and take-outs for your rafting trip. We hiked down to the water and there was some mud and there are slippery rocks. Hiking shoes or hiking boots with good traction are ideal. Also, if you're doing an overnight trip, closed two shoes are nice since there are some biting ants. (Yes, along with bug spray for mosquitos, you'll want spray to keep the ants away if you can find it.)
Fourth, pack light for your overnight stay, but be sure to bring a set of dry clothes to sleep in and to change into once you get off of the river. I assumed it would be really warm overnight in the jungle, but a light layer of down and a light rain coat would have been great.
