      Resourceful and skilled
We joined a group of divers to simply snorkel for the day. As it turned out, the weather became terrifyingly awful after we left the bay — massive waves swelling all around us, taller than our boat at times, requiring the crew to find an entirely different spot to anchor, and to return through the Dique river rather than ocean route. I am grateful for their resourcefulness, their commitment to safety, their unflappability, and their very considerate care for me as I was clearly deep in the throes of panicking. (I am not just a worrier — the mayor closed ocean and beach access that evening!) While I would have preferred a smooth trip and good snorkeling, these folks can’t be blamed for the weather and they deserve tons of credit for how they gracefully handled the situation. And the Dique was an anticipated and wonderful surprise!

Good scuba dive shop and prices ok
We did 2 dives in the morning. Waves are to strong most afternoon. Good: -Staff speak english and are really nice -Prices ok for Cartagena -Lots of nice diving sites -Provided a diversified assortment of fruits and threats to clients during the dive -Easy to book online Not so good: -Small boat, we hardly could move to get dressed with our gear -Diving gear provided not in a good shape/old…some broken altimeter, mold on tubas, old cylinder… -Our dive master was obsessed with killing lion fishes and we had to wait around him for a long while for him to put the dead fish in a special bottle…it took forever

      Paid for pictures, never received
Booked a private dive which also included pictures. It’s been nearly a month, and after several requests I have yet to receive pictures I paid for. Now granted, trip took 2 hours longer due to unforeseen circumstances. Dive operator was trying to charge me for the extra hours after it was settled and agreed with my private guide Ivan, who was amazing by the way. Seems like pictures are being held hostage by owner until I pay an extravagant unfair amount of $$ (nearly as much as the dives) due to a 2 hour delay, trying to take advantage of the situation. I’ve offered to pay a portion, but I was completely ignored and eventually blocked. Highly unprofessional.

Booking a private boat with them is absolutely the right way to visit the Islands.
Captain Eder was waiting for us with an ice bin and snorkeling gear and took us to several locations. As they said, boat is yours for the day so you decide what to do and where to go. This was the main reason for booking privately vs the alternatives. The boat was in good shape, had recliners on the front deck and Eder was very safe and skilled. We picked up Subway for lunch along wiht a bunch of drinks and off we went. Snorkeled in a few places including over the small sunken plane, hung out a beach which was very nice and had a number of food stands. It was the weekend and many locals were there. Going private was the right choice. Happy we weren't on someone else's schedule or need to stop somewhere and leave when the group did. Really a great day.

Buzos de Baru: THE dive company to see Cartagena’s sea life!
I would definitely recommend Buzos de Baru to anyone looking to get certified or to dive with while in Cartagena. Having read all the wonderful reviews, I bought my husband Buzos de Baru’s open diver course for his 40th birthday. Juan was amazing to liaise with. He got back to me quickly, was super professional, and he put together our itineraries flawlessly. My husband was able to complete his coursework from home in the States so that when we arrived in Cartagena, he got straight into the diving. His instructor, Alvaro, did an amazing job of teaching him all the fundamentals. Fluent in both English and Spanish, Alvaro made my husband very comfortable and safe during the dives. Now my husband is addicted to diving. I also joined a group of divers later in the week with dive master Santiago. Santiago did a great job of assessing each diver’s level and knowing how to make everyone safe while ensuring they had a great time. My husband and I also received photos and videos of our dives to remember them forever. Thank you Juan, Alvaro, and Santiago. Nos vemos pronto para bucear otra vez con Buzos de Baru!

If you want to dive certified or not, go with Buzos de Baru!
I (uncertified diver) went on this with my two friends (advanced open water/nitrox certied) and we all had such an amazing day!! They made it so ridiculously easy to book a dive with an unexperienced diver and experienced divers on the same boat. We did two dives, one at two ship wrecks and one at a reef. There were about 14 of us on the boat, and I was the only one who had never dived, so my day looked a little different than everyone elses. For start, my guide made me feel completely at ease even though I was terrified at first. He was so calm, accommodating, and a great teacher who made me feel so comfortable I was down at 12 meters swimming around the ship within 15 minutes of getting in the water! The pictures and videos he took of me are so high quality and captured how fun and beautiful diving is. He pointed out everything I should look at. My friends who were experienced also had an amazing day, and they loved their divemaster. He had all the info at the end of the day for logging their dive. My divemaster also provided excellent recommendations for where to go to lunch afterwards. 10/10 experience, and if I ever have an opportunity to dive again in Cartagena, I will do with Buzos de Baru! I unfortunately don't remember the names of our divemasters, but we went on Sat morning, April 15 2023!

Great place to try scuba diving for the first time!
This was my first time ever scuba diving and I am happy I ended up doing it here. Juan always responded quickly to my queries leading up to the activity, which I appreciated greatly. There is a short online theory to complete before the dives but don't worry it is very easy to understand. The instructor will also cover the basics before you do the dive. On the day of the dives my instructor was Albero and he was a perfect instructor for beginners. He had a calm demeanor which helped put me at ease. I was nervous since it was my first time and having Albero's calm presence helped keep my nerves in check. He checked in frequently during the dives to be sure I was fine. I felt like I was well taken care of by him. He also spoke very good English so I never had to worry about a miscommunication or language barrier. I was very satisfied with the experience. They are very professional here and if you are completely new to diving like I was it's a good place to try it.

      Incredible adventure experience!!
It was amazing from beginning to the end, I visited their office inside a nice hotel in Cartagena. The team was kind providing the information, I have requested and after providing my phone number. The booking, payment, short class, free pictures and video (after dive tour) were virtual. On the scuba day, the meeting point was on a local harbor with easy access, a representative welcomed me then a fast boat arrived with the instructors. We left to Baru island for an incredible adventure, the dive masters inform us on what was the program. They were very knowledgeable and patient. They offered personalize service they were focus on the safety of the group. I was a bit nervous after 20 years of not diving and my breathing pace was not helping. I had great time and I am definitely coming back for more. I would recommend it to anyone!

      An experience of a lifetime
I am still in awe of what I saw and the fact that I did this! Juan was extremely flexible with me when there was a misunderstanding regarding my cell phone number and Diego was an excellent teacher and guide. If you're on the fence, just do it! This will for sure be the highlight of my time in Cartagena. Tip: if you get a Colombian sim card while here, make sure to change your number on your account as this is how they contact you. If you don't hear from them by a couple days before, reach out to them.

Open Heel Fins! My feet thank you!
Great experience for sure. A very well run outfit. We were able to complete of all of registration online and asked to arrive at the dock at 7:00am. At 7:05 we hopped on the boat to head out to the dive site. Our rental equipment was already sorted out and attached to the tank waiting for us on the boat. This is a great treat. Also the BCDs had integrated weights. The most joyful thing though was that open heel fins and dive boots were part of the standard rental. NO Blisters! The diver sites were great and crew very attentive and professional.

The best equipped and trained diving operation in Cartagena
I have dived in Texas, Jamaica and off the coast of West Africa. This was the most interesting and satisfying dive I have done. We saw a variety of bright tropical fish, sunken boats, a sole fish hidden under the sand, a poisonous lion fish, several sunken ships and a statue garden. I believe that Buzos de Baru is the best diving operation in Cartagena. Jose, the owner has been diving since he was a teenager and is very well qualified. The wall of his office in the Hotel Caribe is covered in diving certifications and our dive instructor Alvaro was also excellent - casual, instructive and fun, but careful. He spoke good English as well. Naturally, all of the local diving operations dive in similar locations - we saw actually two other groups under water - so I chose Buzos because they seemed the most trustworthy. The gear was good quality (for example the BCD had integrated, easy-release weights, proper regulator cleaning procedures during covid). The boat was well-maintained. Alvaro took excellent pictures with a very nice underwater camera. I loved the dives, it was my favorite part of my trip. A few comments for future customers. There are not so many options as shown here. Basically you can take the class or do a two dive package or rent the whole boat. I have my cert so I did two dives. They do not ask to see your cert, but if you don't have the training, you're risking your health/safety to do the dive. For my return trip from the dock, I didn't want to hail a passing taxi for security reasons and I was not able to find the bus stop so I ended up walking further than I had planned. Also expect that you'll get the dive pictures from a link sent by email, but this may take several days after the trip, depending on how busy they are.

After researching a couple different diving companies, I ended with Buzos because they were recommended to me by my diving instructor from Santa Marta. And it’s been great!
I’ve done a couple dives with them & I love how considerate they are when placing you in the right group level. Due to my previous experience, I am able to use one tank for about an hour & with Buzos I’ve been able to stay for exactly one hour in almost all my dives.
They are also very friendly & they won’t forget a familiar face. They remembered my name the next time I came. They are fantastic & I highly recommend especially if you’re staying nearby the city center.
Their diving locations are wonderful 🤙🏽

We did a two dive 7am-12pm trip with Santiago and Alvaro on 15th November 2022. Booking, prepayment, waiver form filling must be done online the day before. We were a combined group of first-time divers who did a shallow discovery dive w Santiago and experienced divers who went with Alvaro to 18meters depth (56min and 52min). The visibility was quite bad due to a lot of recent rain but the reefs were nice and the presence of a shipwreck (Los Barcos divesite) and car (!) wreck (El Coche divestie) made up for the not so perfect conditions. We saw seahorse, crab, langoustine, barracuda, stonefish, smalleyed ray, featherworms. I normally always ask for a wetsuit which they offered but in the end I was fine without. The boat was on the smaller side but all the equipment was pre-loaded and prepared including weights etc. We really appreciated that long-sleeved diveshirts and openheel fins with boots were offered as standard part of the rental and included in the price. Generally the equipment quality was very good, nice masks, BCDs w/ integrated weights (no need for weightbelts, yay!). Generally, very good value for money especially if the pictures we're about to download (INCLUDED in the price, never seen this before with any other diveshop) will be of good quality. Thank you Santiago and Alvaro for a great morning!

PS: I was originally excited to see the 'underwater museum of sculptures by German Botero' which every guidebook tells you about so when booking we asked if we could see that. After the first dive to Los Barcos, Alvaro told us "that was it" and that the sculptures were not by Botero. I was quite confused as we only saw a few 'man-made' structures around the shipwrecks not resembling Botero's typical oversized figures. Alvaro mentioned that there are some more objects in shallower waters but we did not go to them as the visibility was very limited. So only after the dive I researched and found a video which explains the situation and the story (search for 'Colombia: Cartagena’s first underwater museum I WIDE') I guess that those sculptures (really by Botero but just very different from what you would expect) were the ones in shallower waters which we ended up missing.

Very unfriendly and very focused on pre-payment.
I had a reservation to go diving and filled in all the forms on my phone. This isnot easy, but that’s the way the want it.
In whatssapp contact I asked about the link for payment. No reply for a long time. When they did reply, they pushed me for the payment within minutes. As it turned out, they required also my passport details. As I did not have my passport on me all day, I had to go back to the hotel to get it. By that time they already cancelled my reservation and tild me I was too late. No payment afterwards, as usual in our scuba world, was accepted. Very unfriendly approach. There are better and nicer companies to choose in Cartagena.
