          Marelvy was fantastic!
We loved our Cartagena city tour with Marelvy. She speaks perfect English and knows local history and culture incredibly well. She also arranged a comfortable minivan to take our group of 5 from place to place. Perfect tour!

Getting to know Gabriel Garcia Marquez
We did the Gabriel Garcia Marquez Tour of Cartagena and it was wonderful . Ms. Pena is extremely well educated on the subject. She gave us an idea of what to read prior to the tour so we could benefit from it . Walking around Cartagena with her for the day was a fun and enlightening experience . Highly recommended for all of Baby’s fans and all readers in general .

          Ambassador of Cartagena’s Authentic Culture
Marelvy should be appointed as the official ambassador to all travelers in search of adventure, culture, food, and urban legends. She knows the back alleys and swiftly guides you through places off the beaten track where real Columbians live and work. She tells stories in ways that make history interesting, even inspiring teenagers to ask questions. She’s an author of a book in Spanish and English that documents the history of Pirates and the founding of Cartagena. Her magnetic energy, grounded wisdom, and friendly approachable attitude make the experience some much more than a “tour” — its really about connecting through time with one of the most special humans I’ve met in my 30 years of traveling around the world. I’m so thankful to have spent time with the one and only Marelvy.

Insightful. Thought-provoking. Comprehensive. Marekvy should be the public relations officer for this charming, historical and beautiful town. We felt privileged to have met her. A sensational guide.period

          Excellent walking tour
We did a 3-hour walking tour with Ester, and had a wonderful time. We walked at a leisurely pace but covered a lot of ground. Enjoyed a cool stop at the emerald museum, and Ester’s stories about growing up in Cartagena and the culture, politics and economy. Blending history with current topics was interesting. She also spoke fluent English. Excellent way to start our stay in Cartagena and get oriented.

          Private tour with Marelvy Pena-Hall
Marelvy greeted my family with hugs and open arms as we met this morning for our tour. Prior to our tour, she was extremely prompt in replying to all my queries regarding designing a custom tour day that included a drumming and dancing visit in La Boquilla combined with an afternoon city tour. Her knowledge and interest in the history of Cartagena is infectious and that is apparent even more so as she about to publish a book about the Pirates that invaded Cartagena del Indias. The visit to the drumming school was amazing and super fun, and the city tour took us to all the highlights of Cartagena. Marelvy has a mastery of English which made it easy to understand her and to appreciate all that we did today. We highly recommend using Marelvy to guide you through the city!!

Such a fun tour with a very lovely guide!
Was able to schedule a last minute private walking tour with Marelvy and I am so glad she was able to accommodate our last min request. We had a 3 hour walking tour of the Old City and it was absolutely wonderful. Marelvy is so sweet and very knowledgeable- we had a great time hearing stories, learning history, seeing the beautiful sights and having lots of laughs. Can’t recommend this experience enough. Thank you Marelvy! :)

          excellent friendly tour guide
We booked Marelvy for two half day tours after our cruise arrived in Cartagena. She communicated efficiently by mail prior to our arrival with good suggestions of how to structure the tours. She was waiting for us with the driver promptly on time at the exit of the port with a huge welcoming smile and hug. She was everything previous reviewers have said about her. Personable, knowledgable and super friendly and easily adapted to both our pace and desires. We learnt a lot about the destination and life in Columbia. A small but significant highlight was the break in a super original coffee shop in the old city. Her English was excellent. All in all a professional and personable guide - top notch, the best.

          Awesome Tour
Our group of 8 were cruising with Princess to Panama Canal. A friend in Las Vegas highly recommended signing up for a tour with Marelvy for our October 30th one day port stop in Cartagena. Marelvy was already booked and her associate Ester gave us the tour. Absolutely wonderful. A nice driver and air conditioned van. Ester is fluent in English and had the best personality and sense of humor. Not only did she show us Cartagena from the inside out but was so knowledgeable and we learned a lot of history as well as a bit of gossip! What a beautiful place to explore

Great way to see the city and learnt ghe!
My wife and I did the "Hidden Treasures" tour with Marelvy and loved it! Marelvy took us to several different parts of the city and aside from hitting the highlights, she showed us some cool places we probably would have never noticed. Marelvy is truly an expert on the city and really knows the history. Would highly recommend for anyone who just wants to familiarize themselves with the city and/or learn more about the history.

          Fabuloso!
The tour with Marelvy was perfect. In a few short hours we saw the old architecture, side streets with cafes & musicians and artists' work. La Popa was a very special place to see the city from up high and inside were amazing artifacts. Marelvy is so knowledgeable, outgoing and patient. Would love to do it again!

          Great walking tours
You can see so much more of the area by walking rather than by bus. Go inside the buildings, see the local artists and performers. Just so much better feel of the local life by foot. Highly receommended. Go at your own pace or get a tour. Great for little ones.

Not Just a Wonderful Tour of Cartegena
We loved our tour of Cartegena with Marelvy, not only because of what we learned about the Old City, but because of the interesting and informative conversation we had about Colombia, both past and present. Unfortunately, time passed by too quickly. We could have spent a few more hours wandering about this beautiful city with her, although I'm sure our endless questions were exhausting. We would not hesitate to book the same tour, if only to have a few more hours of conversation with Marelvy.

The best tour on our trip
We took a tour with two other guests, the price worked out cheaper than the ship’s tour which had about 40 in each group! An excellent tour from start to finish. Loved walking through the narrow streets. Lots of variety in what we saw. Marelvy was a great guide. Highly recommended.

          Frendly, personal, and professional!
Marelvy provided us a wonderful personal tour "Hidden treasures of Cartegana". Her driver Horsta (sorry - probably wrong spelling) drove us all safely in an air-conditioned vehicle. And Marelvy herself gave us a very informative and interesting tour. She's fluent in english, french, and spanish. We definitely recommend her for a tour!

I highly recommend Marelvy's walking tour of old Cartagena! My husband, adult son and I have just returned from a week in Cartagena and one of the highlights of this trip was our tour with Marelvy. Her historical and political knowledge is astounding and yet it is all presented in a very down to earth manner. My husband and I had lived in Colombia 25 years ago and we had a lot of questions about the positive changes we saw throughout the country- Marelvy was so patient about answering all of these questions. She also gave us very practical advice about where to eat, where to get the best juice, the best coffee etc. I can't say enough positive things about our experience with her and should we return to Cartagena we will definitely contact her again! thank you Marelvy for making our trip to Cartagena so memorable!

I was traveling to Cartagena on vacation and found Marelvy on TripAdvisor when looking into tour options. After doing two tours with her--one was a Gabriel García Márquez themed tour of the city (I enjoy his writing and some of his books are based in the city) and the other was a tour of the San Felipe fort, La Popa and La Manga--I can confirm that her high rating here is well-deserved. She is responsive, punctual, professional and very knowledgeable about the city's long history. Marelvy is also very personable and she clearly enjoys sharing her knowledge with others which makes the time spent with her very worthwhile and enjoyable.

My husband and I sailed on the Celebrity Equinox in March. When we first booked the cruise I wasn't enthusiastic about Cartagena at all. Colombia is not found on many garden-variety Caribbean itineraries, and information about Cartagena was not easy to find on Cruise Critic. Once I looked at Trip Advisor I started getting a little bit more excited. I found several reputable guides and sent inquiries. I heard back from Marelvy Pena-Hall almost immediately, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I ended up communicating with Marelvy for over a year and booked two separate tours with her. I shared both tours on my Cruise Critic Roll Call, and they were very well received. We ended up with 21 people on a Sunday evening tour, and more than 40 in several groups on a customized Monday Tour. I can’t recommend Marelvy highly enough! She was very easy to work with and provided one of the best experiences we have ever had in a port.

I'm not sure what I expected, but I was pleasantly surprised by the vibrant, clean, and beautiful city I found. My husband and I both thought Cartagena bore a lot of resemblance to the French Quarter of New Orleans. The main difference was that Cartagena was absolutely immaculate.

Marelvy's attention to detail was impressive. From a celebratory toast with local wine on the ancient city walls in the evening, to the local dance troupe secured to entertain us, to the excellent choice of local restaurant, everything went flawlessly and everyone enjoyed their tour, even those who explored with Marelvy's associates.

One of the highlights of the two days for me was our walking tour of Getsemani, an eclectic, authentic area of the old city that isn't overrun with tourists. I had asked early in the planning stages to include such a stop, and the request wasn't a problem at all.

I highly recommend Marelvy Pena-Hall when you visit Cartagena. She is professional, entertaining, and responsible. I can't imagine a better Cartagena experience!

On October 30 we visited Cartagena Columbia, originally we had reserved the standard trip offered by Royal Caribbean. We where informed by them a few weeks after that this particular tour was no longer offered. We then started to look on Tripadviser to see if the was anything available.
We came across “Tour in Cartagena with Marelvy Pena-Hall”. Reading the reviews we saw noting but 5 stars, we have traveled before to many parts of the world and are very sceptical of perfect reviews. I personally jump over them and go to the lesser one and see what people have to complain about. I used Tripadviser to contact Marelvy Pena-Hall directly to try and arrange a tour.
We got a quick response and were very please at the possibility of customising a tour to what interest us the most. After a few e-mail we booked her services for a half day. As agreed a pond she meet us at the gang way of the ship. We soon found out that the person with whom we had been exchanging e-mails with was a very gracious host. We had the luxury of a private vehicle that was clean and very comfortable. The head rest from the passenger seat had even been removed so that Marelvy could look at us face to face when explaining the different areas of the city and tour. The driver was also very polite and knows the city inside out, we did not waist or time in traffic jams.
Being a very experienced guide Marelvy took us to the most popular tourist spot first, this avoided the crowds from the tour buss that where arriving as we where departing. Being the type of people that are not into buying all the standard souvenir such as tee shirts and hats we had asked no to be taken to any such place. We did drive pass a building that was full of vendor but Marelvy explained to us the historical significance of this building but we did not stop and walk trough the wall of vendor, that was greatly appreciated and proved to us that she had listen to what we had said and in fact was giving us the tour we wanted.
We where very impressed with her knowledge of Cartagena and all of Columbia. There was not a question she did not answer to our full satisfaction. The nice thing is that since Marelvy had taken the time to find out our interest she also did not overload us with so much that everything became a burr.
I had also expressed my desire to maybe purchase a set of cuff links with Columbian emeralds. In the tour of the old town she pointed out a couple of jewellery store that maybe of interest to me. There was nothing that caught my eye and I could see Marelvy access my tastes. On the way back to the ship we stopped at a jewellery store that she said may have what I was looking for, she was right. I can tell you one thing unlike the stores recommended by the cruise line Marelvy was not on the take and she did not care if I bought or not just that I was happy with my visit.
What can I say more, this is a class operation and yes the 5 starts are all real….. I am a believer

Thanks to a cruise mate who had arranged a tour with Marelvy Pena-Hall in advance through tripadvisor.com, my wife and I enjoyed about five hours in both of Cartagena's new and old cities. The experience was most pleasurable, thanks in large part to Marelvy's observations and comments, in flawless English, about Cartagena and Colombia.

We chose Marelvy because of the many excellent reviews on TA and all 9 in our group were delighted with both the reception she gave us at the pier and the way in which she guided us through the highlights of Cartagena. We felt that in the small air conditioned mini bus we were able to visit the old neighborhoods where large tourist buses could not go.
Our tour began with Marelvy presenting each couple with a print of a painting which her husband had done for the Bicentennial of the independence of Cartagena. The painting was titled "A Touch ( or drumbeat ) of the Caribbean" oil painting by John Timothy Hall.
We then went to the summit of La Popa to both see the former convent and the magnificent views over the city and coast.
Another highlight was an extended walk of the Old City where we saw the main plazas old cloisters and lots of Spanish architecture.
Marelvy knew just the right shops where we could buy beautiful dresses for our grand daughters and of course emeralds for loved ones!!!
We were so pleased we chose Marelvy.

We were on the Coral Princess cruise through the Panama canal with an all day stop in Cartagena. We did a walking tour of old Cartagena, a visit to La Popa, the fortress of San Felipe and an air conditioned cruise through some of the neighbourhoods.
It was evident that Marelvy is knowledgeable and passionate about her city. She shared information in an articulate and intelligent fashion. Her warmth and friendliness made this tour a memorable experience for my wife and I. In fact, it was our favourite tour of the cruise.

We had private booked a tour with Marelvy Pena-Hall Cartagena Tours whom we found on Trip Advisor. She arranged to have six of us guided by her associate Esther.

As soon as we disembarked, the tour company had signs with our names and escorted us through the port entrance. Talk about your port entrance! It had a large outside pen with tons of peacocks, pink flamingos and black swans. We then wound our way through the gift shop, to enter into another tropical park with toucans and more peacocks.

At the exit, we met Esther and the other five folks on our tour. We got into a nice air conditioned van driven by Fregas, an independent hired by Esther's group. Traffic was horrible throughout the CIty, but Fregas handled it perfectly.

We first drove to the fort in the middle of the City. Esther explained about the fort and why the Spaniards built it (to fight off the French pirates). As we would come to expect later on the trip, we were hoarded tenaciously by vendors selling hats, trinkets, sodas, silver, etc. They were very persistent and annoying, but if you ignored them they soon went away. We took photographs then left and headed up the hill to the highest point in Cartagena - a restored monastery on top of a mountain overlooking the entire City. The views were spectacular although it was a little hazy from the humidity. We saw all of the new skyscrapers. - mostly hotels - built after the past president offered an incentive to revitalize the area. At the time before the incentive, the unemployment rate was over 40 percent. After the basically 30 year tax incentive to hotels, numerous companies came and constructed huge and beautiful buildings. Esther said now the unemployment rate is 8 percent.

Afterwards, we drove down the mountain to the old town section of Cartagena. A quaint area that reminded us a lot of the layout of the towns in Spain and Italy. We stopped at a local restaurant and had Epenanas for lunch. Bill was nice enough to treat us all. We then drove down by the fortress wall that surrounded the old town section and that had been built way back when to hoard off invaders.

We then drove a little more and stopped to walk around the old town. Esther was very informative about the various buildings and culture of Cartagena. She would point out styles of buildings, types of buildings and their uses, the government buildings and the various monuments scattered throughout this section. The group decided to stop for some gelato at a cute little ice cream shop, and they all enjoyed home made ice cream on old fashioned waffle cones.

We continued to walk through old town and stopped at a local jeweler who sold emeralds. Everyone looked but no one buyed. However the shop owner was very friendly and gave us all cold water bottles. We eventually found our way down to some old-time sailing vessels where we met Fregas and headed back to the ship.

We met Marelvy at the beginning and ending of the tour and she is a wonderful lady. She had already booked another group before we found her on Trip Advisor, but she hooked us up with Esther....I couldn't say more about Esther. Wonderful lady and guide.

Definitely go for this excursion if you are visiting this beautiful city. What a surprise!

My second visit to Cartagena while on a cruise ship and Marelvy's tour was by far superior to the first tour and port visit. Her knowledge of the city and history was just so informative. Her excellent manner of blending humor and history brought you back in time and you felt like you were really there living it all. Our tour took us to La Popa, the gold museum, a brief stop at the Fortress, a little shopping time, a photography exhibit and of course an Old City tour. It was just such a relaxful and enjoyable tour we didn't want the day to end. A wonderful tour!

On 11/15/13, a group of 16, joined Marelvy for a guided tour of Cartagena. From her website we had chosen the city tour. We were met at the pier by Marelvy and boarded a comfortable mini bus that was our transportation for the day.

From the onset of our tour Marelvy provided a detailed description and historical data regarding Cartagena. At the request of one of our group members, Marelvy made an in scheduled stop at a restaurant so that his family could taste arepas. Of course most of the group took advantage of the opportunity to try one of the many kind offered.

From there we proceeded to La Popa to get a panoramic view of the city with a great description of the various parts of the city by Marelvy. From this vantage point we saw the Old Walled City the port and the new areas of development. We then proceeded to the Fortress of San Felipe, and the Old Walled City with Marelvy providing a detailed description of these sites as we walked around. Our group declined shopping opportunities to have more time touring with Marelvy. We then toured the Bocagrande area.

Throughout our tour Marelvy continued to provide the background information with a wealth of historical data to enrich our experience.

Upon our return to the port Marelvy gave each of us a poster of Cartagena as a souvenir of our tour. It was a generous gift that we all appreciated as we did our time spent with her.
