We booked this excursion off an arrival of a cruise ship port. The meeting place was not clear, and we were among so many taxi personnel and it was so confusing. We went inside a building to have someone that spoke English to call the tour company. We finally found two young women, very nice. But our tour leader did not speak any English and her friend spoke limited English. They did have our names on a small piece of paper, but they were late and did not hold it up when we were in the area. We think their names were Helen and Alex, not sure. No name badges representing the tour company. We did not get much out of the tour, and it was just ok. The Market is as you describe. Not for the "faint of the heart" but we did get to see how the locals survive on local goods and groceries.

This is a very authentic experience. As others have mentioned in their reviews, it is dirty and noisy but that is part of the experience. The variety of things to see and experiences as part of the tour (from the metal works to juice and fruit tasting to having a graffiti poster made) make this a really interesting tour. Our guide, Jesus David, was very kind and gave us a lot of information about the market, local neighbourhood and more general chats about life in Cartagena. I would recommend doing this tour if you have more than a couple of days in Cartagena and you want to see something outside of the more traditional tourist attractions.

This tour starts with a walk through the China neighborhood and then into the market. You get to try several fruits and have a smoothie of your choice, listen to champeta music, watch a local artist paint, walk through the main vegetable and butcher sections of the market, smell some regional medicinal herbs, and have a lunch in the market. Our guide was funny, knowledgeable, and asked for our input when directing the tour. Overall a great experience!

I do NOT recommend this plan with Insider Tours Cartagena. They confirmed the details of a bilingual lady-driver who would pick us up at 9 am in a SUV. A man calls me at 8:50 am to tell me that he will pick us up in a cab and a translator. I didn't think it was safe, so I didn't accept it. To calm me down that day, Insider Tour Cartagena representative told me that I would get my money back through this platform (tripadvisor). When I made the request, Insider Cartagena Tour denied the refund of the 130 USD. They cheated me twice: the day of the tour and they stole my money. In the end, going to Bazurto is nothing exceptional, we ended up going our own way. Dirty, messy. You don't miss anything remarkable going there.

Seguiremos creciendo y mejorando.

This was a fun experience that was informative as well as adventurous! Our tour guides, Jesus and Candice, were very kind, helpful, and knowledgeable! It was nice to get a more intimate experience and view of Cartagena in an area that I probably wouldn’t have known existed otherwise. All of the business owners who participated in the tour were very kind and personable, and I really enjoyed the experience! Make sure you wear your walking shoes because you’ll be on the move! I highly recommend the experience if you want a more intimate look at the every day lives of the local people and the city’s history and culture.

If you like your tours squeaky clean and artificial, this is not for you. BUT, if you want a glimpse of how life really happens for normal people in Cartagena, spend a few hours doing this tour! This huge central market seems chaotic at first, but then you realize there are a myriad of business ecosystems, big and small, all intermixed with each other. Fascinating! My guide Dayson knew his way around, and we visited a variety of artisanal stores and workshops, both selling and also making everything from remarkable exotic to everyday products, tools and even furniture on the spot. Tried a few good snacks along the way and finished with a delicious fresh meal in the midst of all the tiny restaurants. Felt very safe the whole time, but the streets can be wet and dirty, so I would suggest wearing closed shoes versus open sandals. Otherwise, not much you need to know, take water if you like, but you can also buy beverages along the way.

We met Paola and Daison and had the best tour of our lives. It was an intimate tour just two couples and we explored all of the market and some of Getsemani. Paola was our main guide because we do not speak much Spanish and she was exceptional. It was fun, engaging and just the best way to spend our third day in Colombia. We highly recommend this tour, especially with Paola. Thank you for a fantastic day. It’s been the highlight of our trip

Great tour of the market and surrounding neighborhood. We got lucky with 4 guides (2 in training) and loved the different stops on the tour, the tastings, and the authentic experience!

Cristina is very knowledgeable and she knows exactly where to go! She took good care of me and made sure I was having a good time. I definitely would recommend newcomers to take this tour to Bazurto market. Wear sturdy shoes--the pavement is uneven. 😄

Incluido:
• GuÃa bilingüe (Inglés, Alemán, Español)
• Traslado: Hotel - Mercado Bazurto - Hotel (en autobús o
taxi)
• Visita guiada por el mercado
• Degustación de frutas
No incluido:
• Seguro de viaje o accidente
• Bebidas
• Gastos personales
• Propinas
y varia según la cantidad de personas.

I would like to know if they can pick you up at the pier. How long does it take from the pier to the area of the market. How long will we spend in the market.? We are seniors in our 80s and do a lot, but we would need to stop and rest, have a soda from time to time. Do you think this is too strenuous. We would like to spend about 2 hours in the market, see the highlights and return to ship. Is this possible:
Since you are a hotel, would you recommend a tour guide or company?
How much would this cost?

We were staying in Cartagena for several days and met our guide at the Volunteer Hostel and took a local bus there and a taxi back, as was our choice. However, I think Cartagena Insider Tours by FEM can arrange for private transport or a taxi both ways. You would need to contact them directly to find out but if there is a way for them to accommodate you from the pier, I think they certainly would! I'd say the walking tour itself was about 75% standing and walking but it was at a very leisurely pace with several stops for artist/workshop demonstrations as well as beverages, snacks, and lunch. We had a fantastic lunch in the market at Cecilia's stall, took ALOT of photos, and asked ALOT of questions throughout so I think our particular tour was longer than most. I think the standard is about 3 hours so if you only have two hours, you would probably have to eliminate lunch, but check with the tour company directly to confirm. If you can allow some extra time, I highly recommend the lunch stop. The local food was fantastic and Cecilia was featured on Anthony Bourdain's show. I hope it works out for you! It's great to know you are still able to travel and explore the world in your 80s. All best and enjoy your trip!

This is a tour through the local market of Cartagena, exploring several stalls selling metal goods, posters, music, medicinal herbs and freshly killed beef and pork. It is very dirty and there is a lot of poverty apparent. The tour guide we had was excellent and the profits from the tour went towards education. My husband and I enjoy local connections and seeing local ways of life, we are traveling on our own sailboat, but this would be an eye opener for the average tourist. I think it would be an excellent educational experience for the youngsters, but it would depend on their maturity and interest. It is in sharp contrast to the tourist areas of Cartagena, and you get to interact with some local people and see day to day life. To get to the market, you walk with the guide through a typical Colombian neighborhood, which is also very interesting. You have a local lunch at the market, which is unlike what you would typically eat when traveling there, but you are are eating with all the local shoppers and stall owners.
Hopefully this helps make your decision, but the tour is worth the cost and very interesting. It just would depend on the interest levels of the youngsters. It is real life, not Disneyland.....
