A wonderful way to get to know Colombia!

I've always thought there is nothing better than getting to know a country through its food and drink, and the Duran Duran tours proved this for me in Colombia! I was delighted to find out we would be hosted by the Duran family in their home. Maria, the daughter, led us through an extraordinary tour of the Bazurto Market, Angel was the ultimate guide, and our experience cooking in the family home was incomparable. Sra. Duran (also Maria) is clearly the queen of her kitchen and makes the experience even more fun with her singing! The market was a sight not to be missed and the day with the family a true joy.

My partner and I really enjoyed this cooking/market tour !

We were picked up in the AM by Angel and taken to the local market in the city. This place is huge! After we had juice and pastries for breakfast, we walked around and grabbed what we needed for our cooking class. So many different fruits, vegetables and meat options.

We then were welcomed into their home by Maria, who opened a bottle of wine and poured us coffee. We made the curry dish, that was a family recipe from Maria's mother. They also showed us how to make plantains and fresh juice.

We sat down at their dinner table and ate together as we talked about the history of their neighborhood and Colombia. Angel then drove us back to our air bnb and see said goodbye. The experience was a total of 4 hours.

The meal tasted incredible, the hosts were very generous and so friendly. We would recommend this tour to anyone!

Cooking in Cartagena

What an amazing experience!
Duran picks you up in his personal car, takes you to the local market to do shopping for the food you are going to prepare. He takes you to his home where his wife does the cooking. Maria, his wife was a gem as she does everything with such ease and makes you feel at home. I had coconut rice with shrimp and salad. EVERYTHING was better than any restaurant I visited while in Cartagena. I strongly suggest booking this tour with them as they made you feel at home and what can be better than having a meal with your new ready made family.

Best authentic Cartagena experience out there!

We were met at our AirBnB apartment promptly at 8:30 am by Daniela and a private driver. We hopped in the van and they whisked us to the Bazurto Market where we met our chef for the day, Maria. Daniela and Maria led us through the booming, winding market showing us local treats, eats, and new fruits and foods. We helped select our fixings for our meal and enjoyed browsing the booming market. After we finished our shopping, we loaded back up into the van and off to Maria’s beautiful home we went. Maria and Daniela made us feel at home and allowed us to get our hands dirty preparing our meal from our shopping trip finds. Lots of learning and laughs were had and then we all sat down to enjoy a true authentic Cartagena meal together. The food was delicious and this was by far the absolute BEST experience we had in Cartagena.

Angel Duran picked us up from our hotel and drove us to the Bazuto Market, we were joined by his daughter Daniella who is learning the business but is already very good. The market itself is chaotic but Angel was an excellent guide weaving us through the stalls, letting us taste various fruits and explaining how Colombians use them in their daily lives. All the while we were picking up the ingredients for the meal we would learn to cook.

Once all the shopping was complete, he led us out of the maze back to the car for the short drive to his house, where his wife Maria took over.

She is an amazing cook and a patient teacher. We made coconut rice flavored with Panella, a raw brown sugar that added a caramel flavor to the rice. We made a simple vegetable salad. The main course was fish stuffed with vegetables cooked in coconut milk. The second side dish was fried plantains. She also made us a drink that was a mixture of milk and one of the exotic fruits from the market.

The end result was one of the best meals we had in Colombia and a great time.

Wonderful Market Tour and Cooking Class

We had a wonderful time with Maria and Roger. The Bazurto Market is the real deal and you will relish the sights, sounds and smells of a vibrant working market. After completing our shopping, we went to Maria's spotless and comfortable home where we prepared our delicious meal of fish, plantain, salad, coconut rice and fresh juice.

This was a lot of fun and Maria is both a fabulous chef and a gracious host.

Wonderful day with Maria and Roger
My wife and I had a wonderful experience seeing, shopping, and trying numerous fruits in the market. We then went to Maria’s house where she led the group in cooking a Columbian meal with Cartagenan special Arroz con Coco Frito (not to be missed).

Without doubt one of our top experiences in Colombia. We loved our Bazurto Market experience which was way different than anything found in the States - packed with shoppers in narrow lanes with endless stalls of fruits, vegetables and everything else. It is enormous and a bit funky and chaotic. Maria Angelica and her mom patiently pointed out all the usual and unusual items. This is where they shop too. The following lunch at their house was fantastic. The food was delicious and we truly enjoyed our interaction with the whole family. Very warm and engaging people. If you like to submerge yourself in other cultures this experience is for you.

The Duran Family was friendly, knowledgeable, and so welcoming. We saw and experienced a Cartegena in ways other tours did not offer. From shopping in Bazurto Market to cooking and eating lunch with the Duran Family, we got to experience Cartegena food, culture, and spirit as an invited guest.

Bazurto Market Tour and Cooking Class With Maria and Daniela

We experienced the Bazurto Market Tour and cooking class in Cartagena with Daniela as our guide and Maria as our host and cook. This was the best tour we took in Cartagena. My husband and I had been wanting to go to the Bazurto market. It’s a good thing we decided to go with Maria and Daniela. We would not have been able to navigate the giant and crowded market on our own! Maria and Daniela led us through the market pointing out the fruits, meats, grains, fish, etc. After we picked out the provisions for our lunch, we went to Maria’s house where she taught us to make a traditional Columbian meal. We had excellent food during our stay in Cartagena, but the meal Maria made was at the top of the list! I’m not sure I will ever be able to make coconut rice like Maria, but I am excited to try to make the patacones and vegetable stuffed fish!! Maria and Daniela, and Maria’s neighbor we’re friendly, professional, and did an excellent job teaching us and making us feel welcome in their beautiful city, Cartagena! Way to go Duran Duran Tours!
