      Excellent Sichuan Cooking Class
My son and I are travelling together in China, and we were really looking forward to learning about the ingredients and preparation of Sichuan food. Chilli Cool, through our super-friendly guide, Lance, provided a great introduction. We started with a fascinating visit to the local market, which even included some hands-on wanton making. The cooking class itself was well run and was designed for a small group, so it was a pleasant and personalised experience. The ingredients we used were plentiful and beautifully fresh. We made five dishes, including true local specialties like Twice-Cooked Pork and Mapu Tofu, which we shared afterwards. As the class progressed, and we became more relaxed and confident, we were able to really start working with the pungency and flavour of our dishes. Lance was also very generous in the great selection of recipes he passed on to us after the class was over. The whole experience was great fun and very informative.

Great experience learning about and cooking Sichuan food
We had a really great time with Lance - first at the Spice Market and later cooking. Good introduction to the spices and ingredients used in Sichuan cooking. Followed by cooking a great meal with a very capable chef. The english was also really good making it an instructive experience. Definitely one of our top experiences in China.

An excellent, accommodating, and delicious experience with locals
I had such a great time at this cooking class where every effort was made to make me feel comfortable and ensure I was getting the most out of the experience. It was only me and 1 other person and it was a great bonding experience for us as well as the chefs and helpers. The food tasted amazing and it was the perfect balance of teaching to doing. I would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone coming to Chengdu.

      An excellent and fun experience!
The cooking class with Jerry and Leo is a perfect start in order to dive into Sichuan cuisine. After getting a detailed tour through the local market and being given the option to try anything you are interested in, the cooking class gives you a really good idea on how to approach cooking sichuan style dishes. The dishes taste delicious and being guided by Leo and Jerry is not only very informative but also a lot of fun. In addition Jerry is extremely helpful in getting you setup in Chengdu in order to check out some great spots for authentic dishes. We really enjoyed his company very much!

      Awesome, relaxed, great cooking experience
Spent a day with Lance and Jerry - and it was awesome. I was only going to do the morning (3 dishes incl. Mapo Tofu - which was great) , but had so much fun I tapped into the afternoon class too (BaoZi - Steamed Pork Buns). So they even threw in some Mahjong lessons too in between. They are seriously relaxed and fun guys to be with, great English, great at sharing local knowledge and culture (the markets etc.) and Jerry is great to work with in the kitchen - keeps it relaxed, fun, but useful and productive too (but always patient...). They've set up a great operation - totally recommend it 100% whether you're a novice or a skilled foodie these guys can make a great experience for you. I had never done a cooking class before despite travelling a lot.... so glad I decided i finally would since I had a free day - it really was awesome!

      Absolutely Fantastic Cooking Class!
We had such a wonderful time at our half day cooking class. We learned to make delicious Dan Dan noodles and what must have been one of the best Mapo tofu we've ever eaten. Our guide Lance was so fun and kind, and so helpful down at the market! He helped us with pronunciation and explained different ingredients to us. We had so much fun. Then back at the new kitchen Jerry took us through cooking the dishes and we learnt many special tips! Not to mention the best 13 spice to get! We loved our class it was a highlight of our trip. Thanks Chilli Cool China!

      Wonderful experience
I am so glad I decided to do this tour and cooking class during my stay in Chengdu! I did the 3 course class:) Lance was a phenomenal guide! He speaks good English, was very welcoming and friendly, and he had a lot of knowledge. He taught us about the different vegetables, fruits, meat and everything on the market. I got so much more out of the experience than I would have if I went to the market by my self. There was no pressure to buy anything, but if you wanted to stop and buy something, you could. It was fun to cook the food and learn how to prepare real Sichuan dishes. I also really enjoyd eating the dishes! They were delicious, and we could adjust how spicy we wanted it to be when we made the dishes, which also was nice. I would really recommend this tour if you visit Chengdu and want to experience the sichuan cuisine and food culture. Lance did a very good job!

Great day of food with lance
This foodtour was a great introduction to the sichuan cousine and culture! Lance was great and answered all our questions during the walk! There is a proper chef guiding the cooking in a really nice kitchen. We got to try to make wutongs, and tasted different regional delicacies!

      A fantastic cooking class!
We had such a great time with Lance teaching us about the Sichuan cuisine and cooking a delicious 3-meal dinner. We had a very interesting trip to the market, where Lance thought us about all the different meats and vegetables and how they are used. It was a wonderful insight in the Sichuan cooking style and way of life. We were introduced to different ways of using the wok for different types of dishes, which were both healthy and super delicious. Even though the fire at the wok could seem a bit stressful, Lance and our chef thought us well and turned it into a relaxing and social experience, just the way food should be. In short, a fantastic cooking class!

      Amazing Experience!
I was in China for a business trip and decided to squeeze in a cooking class before I left, and I'm so glad I did! Lance was a wonderful guide. He taught me so much about the Sichuan food scene during our market tour, and during our cooking class he took so many photos and was really encouraging as we learned to make new dishes. During the market tour we met many wonderful vendors, practiced a few mandarin phrases, and learned how to make dumplings from a local vendor. There were a few items the group was curious about that weren't on our grocery list like century old eggs, so Lance went ahead and bought them so we could try them. Between the market tour and the cooking class he served us a beautiful jasmine green tea and some snacks. The cooking part of the visit was amazing. I've taken many cooking classes abroad and sometimes they are too basic or don't let you do all the cooking yourself. During this class I got to do everything from chopping through cooking. If you are a beginner this class would work well too, as the chef was there to answer any questions or assist if you needed it. I was never a fan of pork belly or tofu, and after this class I'm a convert! Chengdu is know for spicy food, but this class allowed you to customize the spice level to your liking. I made my dishes more mild, while the other people in the class opted for more spice. So if you are worried about the food being too spicy, don't! After the class, Lance sent through all the recipes so we could make them at home, and he even walked with me to call a taxi so I could get back to my hotel. I had a great time, and would love to come back for their steamed bun class.

      This cooking class rocks!
Had a blast at this cooking class! Lance showed us around the local market, and his English was great. Lee, the chef, taught us how to cook the dishes, and they turned out awesome! Lance also answered all our questions about life in China and Chinese culture. If you're in Chengdu, don't miss this class. Thanks, Lance and Lee!

The excursion to the local spice market in a small group was a great experience and cooking together was great fun. Our guide was very charming and had lots of interesting details for us. The "treasure hunt" on the spice maket was a great idea! :)

Memorable, fun and educational cooking class experience with Lance and a local master chef! The tour was split into 3 parts: purchasing ingredients and trying local delicacies from workers' market; cooking Dan Dan noodles; eating! We were given little missions as well in the market which was great! We were a small group and didn't feel rushed and experience lasted 4 hours altogether. We saw different types of spices, eggs, chicken, frogs, snakes, mushrooms and other assorted exotic vegetables! We tried mooncake as it was mid autumn festival the same day, plum wine, cold spring roll, even made dumplings that we were able to have as a side dish with our main dish. We had a rest at the cooking place before cooking the noodles and ate our treats.
Lance interpreted for us while the chef instructed us and helped to take photos of us!!!!
End result was tasty Dan Dan noodles, a completion certificate and some chopsticks!!!!
You get the recipe sent to you too at the end. Thoroughly recommend this experience!!!!

I was keen on spending a few days at a Sichuan cooking school, and so after considerable research settled on Chilli Cool. Because of my dates I was unable to book a three day private class and so I spoke with Winter, the class organiser, who advised that I could take three half-day group classes instead. I booked (1) the three-dish, (2) the Baozi (steamed dumpling) and (3) the Dan Dan Mian classes.

On each day I was met by Lance, the guide and translator as well as assistant chef, at my hotel. He speaks excellent English and is a charming and very friendly young man. I am a fluent Mandarin speaker and he went to great lengths to help me learn market-specific and food-related vocabulary, so if you are learning Chinese you will get in effect both a cooking and a Mandarin lesson!

After he met me we would go to the market where we would be introduced to local ingredients. It is immensely interesting to see a Chinese market in full swing as it is a true microcosm of China’s bustling, intense and vivacious culture. Lance knows all there is to know about the food and points of interest and readily answers any questions. We would try everything from vegetable wraps to pickles to Chinese Bai Jiu (extremely strong liquor), and by the end of my three days I had got to know some of the stall owners - an added degree of immersion which I found very enjoyable.

After the market it’s time to go to the school, which is close to the stalls and consists of a traditional style courtyard with a kitchen annexe. The chef and teacher, Raohe, is a proper character and speaks almost no English - but Lance translates for those who require it. You are taught chopping techniques using the large square Chinese kitchen knife and the more fiddly ingredients are neatly prepped for you in small bowls to save time.

After cooking the dishes you settle down to a meal and wash it all down with a glass or seven of Bai Jiu or plum wine acquired in the market tour. Lance and the team have a great sense of humour, and every time my classmates were excellent company and very enthusiastic about China and its food.

Overall the experience was fantastic, something reflected in the fact that I went back three times. It is very cheap for what you get, and is of particular interest to a Chinese speaker looking to practise and immerse themselves in local culture, although having the language is absolutely not a requirement.

I look forward to going back next time I am in Chengdu 👍🌶🔥

I really like the dan dan noodles course I did with Ocean, Amy and the local instructor.

The spice market tour was very fun, especially when it became hands-on. I had to make ten chaoshou and learn the Mandarin to buy some. This was a lot of fun and I'm so glad that it was a part of the experience.

The cooking experience was also fun as well. Thankfully, it's not very complicated. They walked me through all the ingredients before we started. It definitely feels like something I can replicate on my own. And oh the noodles were delicious!

My family and I went on a half day class, while in Chengdu for a week.

We had visited some of the markets before we went with Lance. The market he took us to was one of the best and it was great to be able to ask him questions about the things we had been wondering about. The kids especially enjoyed the chilli cool challenges - which got them searching for the hottest chilli etc. The cooking class was also great, hosted in a szechuan culinary school, the facilities were excellent. I definitely feel confident I could make dandan noodles at home now.

Lance was a great host, all the chilli cool staff were very nice and it was a fun and interesting afternoon which we all enjoyed (even the four year old). Thank you!
