- cynno0 contributionsCooking for the family 5 out of 5A fabulous family activity. We took our 13, 11 and 10 years kids for the 5pm cooking class. The market visit to start with was informative and interesting. The class is structured perfectly to keep everyone engaged. Lance is a great guide. Would recommend this to anyone visitor area.Written December 1, 2024
- Traveler1608150 contributionsA wonderful experience for the whole family! We attended the cooking class as a family (parents + teenager boy). We can say that this was one of our highlights on our 14 day trip to China. Our guide Lance picked us up on time at the agreed meeting point. We then walked around a local market together. We particularly liked the many goods on offer. Lance went to a lot of effort to explain everything to us, as many foods and dishes were completely unfamiliar to us. Then it was time to cook. We really had a lot of fun and laughed a lot. It's really harder than we thought ! Of course, you get the recipe and the list of ingredients and we have already cooked the buns at home. Thank you very much for this wonderful day and best wishes from Berlin!Written November 20, 2024
- Eli G0 contributionsA very fun and delicious afternoonI had the pleasure of having Lance meet me at the metro station this afternoon. After taking me through the local market, we enjoyed some tea, and then got into cooking! I really enjoyed the whole trip, and being able to cook some authentic dishes, and then enjoy them afterwards is really worth the time. It was only made better by the fact that Lance is a very personable and friendly person, whom I enjoyed chatting with over the food we cooked at the end. Recommended to everyone, even if you aren't an amateur chef, the process let's you appreciate the Chinese food you enjoy during your travels through the country that much more.Written November 18, 2024
- F62OVjohnp0 contributionsInformative, fun and delicious!Booked this for my girlfriend and I on our first day in Chengdu. It was such a fun way to experience the city and food culture, Jerry was really informative and friendly. We had a great time cooking all of the dishes (which were delicious) with the chef and Jerry’s help and learnt a lot - would recommend to anyone visiting Chengdu!Written November 17, 2024
- TeRangaTang0 contributionsHands on. Stomach happy!Very educational and enjoyable experience. Perfect half day activity for adults wanting to learn more about the food culture in Chengdu and have a go at making some of it themselves!Written November 14, 2024
- JorgeJorgeJorgeJorg10 contributionsI finally learnt how to cook real Sichuan dishes! The most traditional Chinese Sichuan dishes in one morning. I enjoyed so much the visit to the market. Jerry is a super friendly and caring guide. He explained us everything about the products in the market. Besides he speaks wonderful English. Later at the kitchen he took care of everything, even the cleaning!!! After some cooking classes before in China I finally learn because Jerry told us the English names of every ingredients so we could find them at home Chinese shops. That was perfect! If you come to Chengdu I strongly recommend this class!Written November 14, 2024
- 734ollied0 contributionsEat how the locals eat! What an incredible experience. We learnt so much about Chinese cooking and local culture. Lance was so warm and hospitable. The food was delicious, and we were full of pride having prepared it ourselves. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to dig deeper into sichuan cuisine!Written November 13, 2024
- carlrG5156OV0 contributionsA German in ChengduWhat an experience! As a solo traveller in China this is all you can hope for: A knowledgeable guide, who has a true passion for food and cultural exchange. Lance did not only show me how to cook authentic Sichuanese dishes, but also helped me to buy some specialities from the local market and he taught me about everyday life in Chengdu. I had a wonderful time that felt more like dinner with a friend than your usual bland cooking class. Thank you Lance and everyone at Chilli Cool Kitchen!Written November 12, 2024
- M1846SZeleanorh0 contributionsOnce in a Lifetime Experience! We've never taken a cooking class before, but my Mom and I had so much fun! First we explored the vegetable and wet market and picked up a few things. Lance was amazing! He explained every ingredient we didn't recognize and taught us a lot of culture and history along the way. He also bought a few pieces of anything we wanted to try which was really nice. Then we went to the spice market and I picked up some rare spices for myself to take home. After our tea and snack break, we got to cooking. Our chef was a pro but made it very accessible for us. I learned a lot about ingredients and technique that makes me appreciate Sichuan cuisine so much more! If you want to escape the crowds and typical touristy stuff, then definitely give this a try. You won't regret it!Written November 11, 2024
- 392dorothyd0 contributionsGlimpse of eating like a Chengdu localMy girlfriend and I were greeted by Jerry who took us on a tour of the local market. Jerry was very knowledgeable and explained many of the vegetables and spices we were seeing as well as the rich culinary history in Chengdu. After the tour, we had tea and began the cooking class where we made 3 different dishes. The food turned out delicious. I would recommend this tour for anyone looking to learn more about local cuisine and want to gain a locals perspective in Chengdu. Instructions were very clear for an English speaker and we had no troubles communicatingWritten November 7, 2024
- P5012YRraquels0 contributionsBEST EXPERIENCE!!!One of the coolest experiences ever! Lance and Jerry were amazing. We had such a fun time going to the market & learning more about Chinese culture. Our cooking instructor was incredible. The dishes were delicious and it felt so good to actually eat the dishes we made ourselves. Highly recommend this group to everyone!Written November 7, 2024

This tour was amazing. Our guide Winter took us to the old town of Chengdu to see the local market. The photos we made there were just awesome, so was the experience and the guidesness. Winter is a wonderful guide, fluid in English and excellent in explaining local traditions and China’s culture. We tried all sorts of food there from local vendors: fresh spring rolls, rice wine, deliscious noodlles and even participated in rolling Chinese dumplings. At the market we saw so many Chinese specialities- the snake fish, frogs, different Sechuan spices, century eggs, sesame paste and so much more. Winter also herpes us choose a good and reasonably priced green tea at the local vendor. After the market we visited the Monastery and had lunch at the nunnary, which was also an amazing experience. And at the end we went to a local tea house and enjoyed the best green tea while watching the locals and listening to Winter explaining how to drink tea correctly. I would highly recommend this tour, definately an experience I will never forget.

We had an amazing day with ocean. The market tour was really nice and interesting and the lunch was great and a very interesting experience.
The best part of our day buy far was our AMAZING guide - ocean. She has the best English we met in china, her guidance was interesting and very well directed to our interests and she is a great person to sit around and chat with.
Even though we made a booking mistake and booked the day before we intended- ocean didn't do us any trouble or even mention it.
Well worth the money.
Very very recommended.
Don't forget to ask for ocean (:

We are a group of three people from Thailand. We all agree this was the highlight of our Chengdu trip as we got to experience so much local culture. The local market, which was hidden from the main streets, was full of interesting things to see. The lunch in a nunnery canteen was cool. We loved watching people there.
Our guide Winter is knowledgeable and showed us many things we would have missed if we went there by ourselves. He speaks good English and, surprisingly, Thai as well! We had a great time with him.

We have been living in Southern China and we are usually very wary of organized tours in China because they are often overly touristic, but this was not the case here! We loved our guide Ocean. She is smart, funny, and insightful. Her English is also really good. Her tour through the market was really interesting, even for someone who has already seen a ton of Chinese markets. Going through them with Ocean was really interesting, she explained and pointed out interesting foods and explains how they are made. The lunch at the nunnery was the most interesting experience. It is clearly not something done for tourists, as its you, the nuns, and a bunch of locals. it's a really authentic, local, experience. The tour is great for vegetarians, and, even for those with other allergies. I can't eat gluten, and Ocean was very helpful in identifying food that I could eat (there was more than I thought!) I didn't expect to eat at all and I was a bit unsure of how the tour would be if I couldn't eat, but she was so helpful. When making spring rolls at a local stall she had the woman put a bunch of vegetables and some sauces in a plastic bag for me to eat instead of wrapping it in the wheat wrapper. We couldn't have imagined a better tour. The tea was also a highlight! It's hard to even pick the best part! Highly Recomend it!
