We continue Our journey to Isla Marta to see Sea Wolves, Imperial Cormorants and hundreds of Southern Gulls. Then return to the pier and Punta Arenas.
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- benlin640 contributionsVery unhappy that they canceled our reservation the day before our tour.In November 2023, my family booked a tour for March 19, 2024 - four months ahead of time. They notified us on March 18, 2024, one day before our tour date that they overbooked and canceled our reservation. March 19 was our last day in Punta Arenas. We searched online and also contacted the TripAdvisor support team but was not able to find any other penguin tours for my family.Written April 15, 2024
- Richard K0 contributionsAbsolutely a terrible experience..I wish that I could give zero stars… That’s how bad the experience was. My wife and I were on the group that sailed on March 15. As the reviews have mentioned, the check-in procedure was chaotic but not dangerous. The bus trip over to the docks was disorganised but not dangerous. Having one of the red boats breakdown was inconvenient but not dangerous. Placing all 47 passengers on one of the yellow boats designed for 33 people Was dangerous, reckless and could’ve been catastrophic. It was only because the passengers insisted that after 30 minutes of sea-sickness and terror, the captain turned the boat around and head back to shore. Which potentially prevented a tragedy. Not only was the boat overloaded, there were not enough life vests available for everyone. The forward hatch was leaking water when waves would break over the bow and the crewmembers used a rope to secure it, cutting off our means of escape had the boat capsised. And on the way back to shore one of the engines quit because it had become entangled with kelp. To make matters worse, they were unable to credit the cost of the tour back to our credit cards and required us to come back to the office the next day to receive refunds in cash. It was an absolute disgrace of a tour operation.Written March 29, 2024
- xloganl13x0 contributionsIt was goodSo we did a couple different penguin tours around South America. What I liked about this one was you only had one hour on the island, but you didn’t have a guy constantly telling you to keep moving, you could stop and take pictures for a few minutes. I didn’t like how many people there were, I felt like we overpaid for how many people there was. Overall it was a great experience though and the island is big so the group kind of spread out. I would do it again in order to get to the island early morning. The guides were very friendly and spoke great English.Written March 25, 2024
- Beedij0 contributionsGreat day outSuperb, great day out lots of whales and sea lions a magical glacier and the staff were fun, friendly and knowledgeable. They even catch some glacier ice to put in your drinks.Written March 25, 2024
- deborahq1160 contributionsWhales and much moreWas not sure about doing this excursion given the price and early start. It ended up being amazing. We did have a delay in our start due to the fuel delivery not coming to the boat on time. We all went back to bed for a few hours and then they picked us up. Not optimal but seems out of their control. The boat was comfortable, the guide and information interesting and the views astounding. And the whales ... jumping and jumping and jumping. Was incredible. Also many birds, sea lions and the dramatic and beautiful glacier. We all had a great time with no regrets. The food is not good but I wasn't there for the food so didn't really care.Written March 8, 2024
- killagaga0 contributionsAwesome excursion! We were lucky to have good weather, and to be able to observe sea lions, albatros, and obviously the stars of the visit: Magellan's penguins! The 3 agency employees who supervised us were really very friendly, welcoming and very professional. Especially the guide, who in addition to the abundant and clear explications in English and Spanish, was really smiling, pleasant and engaged in discussion with everyone. I think everyone felt comfortable and was able to take full advantage of this moment of discovery of the fauna and flora of this area of the Strait of Magellan, thanks to him. Thank you again! And all this for a very fair price. So I recommend 200%! Francois and Flora (the frenchies)Written February 29, 2024
- carolfL6313BT0 contributionsIsla Magdalena and Isla MartaThe Check-in process could have been more organized but once We were on the bus everything ran smoothly. It was awesome to see the penguins. And the sea birds and to be in fresh air. I would have liked to spend more time viewing the sea. Lions, but that was an amazing experience as well.Written February 26, 2024
- jacobh9280 contributionsUnforgettable. Worth every penny.I could write pages about this tour. Keeping it prozaic and short: very good ship with good facilities, sympathetic crew (thank you captain Joshua (?) for your explanations!), adequate and functional catering (coffee was not bad at all). We were comfortable throughout. The weather was very good, sun, good visibility and calm sea (NB which will not often be the case). We had a very close encounter with a curious humpback who lingered around the boat for some 30 mins. The nature here is majestic and the impressions were, simply, overwhelming. All the photos of the world won’t be able to capture this experience.Written February 24, 2024
- Daniel W0 contributionsRoom for improvement 18/02/24Positives - we saw lots of Whales. Some were quite close and breaching, which was incredible to see. We also saw sea lions, penguins and birds. The boat is very nice; it's modern, fast and in a good condition. The guide was informative and gave interesting information about the Whales and surrounding area. The pisco sour with ice from the glacier was lovely. Negatives - $335 USD is really expensive for what you get. It feels like the company have a monopoly doing this tour and they are taking advantage. The food was dire and extremely poor considering the price you pay. They 'served' an attempted gnocchi which was actually just sludgey mash potato. The tour was 4 hours delayed, which we were only told upon arrival at 4am; no attempt was made to communicate the delay prior to turning up at this time. Apparently the delay was due to the boat or buses being filled with the incorrect type of fuel (communication was poor so it was hard to get an exact answer). There was no mention of the delay or apology once the tour started at 8am. Breakfast and lunch were included. Due to the delay we were supposed to return at 9pm (but we actually returned at 10pm when most supermarkets and restaurants were closed), which is past dinner time. Any respectable company would offer at least a snack later on in the day, but of course they didn't. The company feels all about the profit rather than any good customer service. The kayaking with the whales was offered for an extra $345 USD each to the price already paid ($335 USD each). This is also outrageous considering the value and what has already been paid for the tour. The kayaking group didn't manage to see much more than we did from the boat and missed out on going to see the glacier. A bit awkward considering the additional cost. A lot of plastic is used on the boat and more should (and can) be done to be more sustainable. Free WiFi should be included as they have it on board but it was not offered to customers. Coffee was bad quality.Written February 19, 2024
- Mike J0 contributionsAwesome once in a lifetime excursion.I loved this excursion! I was in Chile on business in Santiago and stole away on a long weekend and it was o worth it. The excursion start super early and lasts all day but was well worth it imho. The crew was superb, kept us safe, entertained and show us some incredible sights. We saw a TON of whales, a few penguins, sea lions, lots or birds and of course the Sarmiento Glacier. Fantastic time and I highly recommend.Written February 18, 2024

- Noodle4510 contributionsDon't miss itThis was the best thing to do even tho we had to get up at three in the morning. Don't miss it. So incredibly beautiful. Nothing like it. The boat was comfortable and warm inside, staff was great. Food was fine. The nature was AMAZing and as advertised we saw it all. Such a treat.Written February 12, 2024

The entire Solo team proved to be exceptionally friendly and helpful, providing us with detailed information about the areas we visited, the marine life, and the birds. They made extensive efforts to ensure that everyone had a fantastic experience, and they succeeded. I highly recommend this tour.Written January 29, 2024
- jlentz240 contributionsAmazing day!!!Wow!!! What a day! It’s expensive so definitely a splurge but loved it!! We saw at least 2 dozen whales, dozens of sea lions and penguins, lots of other birds and the glacier! The food and coffee station were pretty good and I liked the pisco sour or whiskey at the glacier! The guide was knowledgeable and the boat crew was excellent! Would definitely recommend.Written January 20, 2024
- manhk0 contributionsMaggallenic penguins on Magdalena IslandAmazing tour to Magdalena Island on a catamaran boat. It was very bumpy ride to the island, but the return trip was much smoother. We got to see sea lions and seals, plus an awesome close up view of plenty of Magellanic penguins and albatross. We went there on one of our cruise port, and booked ahead of time . The boat can only carry 150, and lasted for about 3 hours. It was totally worth it.Written January 19, 2024

We were asked to turn up at 6.10am for a briefing. What it actually was, was waiting around for over an hour for other people to pay and mill around with dozens of other people. Totally unnecessary and a waste of time.
We weren't given enough information, I asked if it would be cold and the lady in reception said she was warm because she lives here!
Not told that if you get sea sick to take pills. Watching the sea lions involved sitting on an uncomfortable metal roof of the boat with no seats. Not easy for 2 older ladies and we got told off for being in other people's way, but could not sit down properly.
The boat was filled with people and I was sat uncomfortably in a corner seat squashed in and unable to move.
The penguins were great though, the uncomfortable journey, 5am wake up and being uncomfortable for the rest of the time was totally worth it.

The review is not fully for the penguin tour to Magdalena island. Our tour was not able to depart due to weather conditions (especially wind gusts). Instead, they offered the wildlife tour option to view condors. It was an ok experience. I wouldn’t pay the same price for the wildlife/condor tour, but that’s what we picked so it wasn’t the best value for the price paid

The management of the activity by Solo Expediciones was very correct: they charged us once it was confirmed that the port had opened (activity subject to the variable weather conditions of Patagonia), and the excursion fulfilled everything included: one-way bus and return, coffee on board, and a bilingual guide (Rafael) who we would like to especially thank for his involvement, as he conveyed enthusiasm for his work and was a great expert on the marine fauna of the area, in addition to perfectly fluent in both languages. (Spanish and English).
The visit to the sea lions was, to say the least, curious: it is a chaotic community that offered us a noisy spectacle of movements in the middle of the Strait of Magellan. On the other hand, in the Magdalena Island penguin colony there was tranquility, and although we went at the end of the season, we were still able to enjoy the 3,000 most straggler penguins on the island.

This island, it is a must see.
We took a transfer boat to a brand new catamaran that took us to both Marta and Magdalena Islands. It was a beautiful day so the ride was even more smooth than would be expected from a catamaran. First, we idled off the shores of Marta Island, getting expansive views of the Sea lions, Cormorants, Skuas, Austral seagull, Antarctic pigeon and Sea elephants from the large open upper deck, perfect for photography.
Then we arrived at Magdalena Island where the catamaran went right up to shore and we walked off a ramp where we were met by a park ranger. She explained what we would see on our hour walk around the island and walked with us to answer questions we might have. While we were asked not to disturb the penguins and birds, we were able to get so close on the walking path that we could almost interact with the Magellan Penguins and seagulls and their chicks.
The crew was very knowledgeable as well as hospitable. They told us about what we would see on the way out and served us hot cocoa, coffee and cookies on our return trip.

Our adventure started at 6:30 am, we went to the agency where we met the group, we took the bus to go to the boats, this journey took 30 minutes. Then we took the boat, 1 hour to arrive at Isla Magdalena, it was cold and windy, I suggest a good windproof jacket and hat. On the island we had a fantastic experience, it was my dream to be among the charming penguins that parade from one side to the other showing off to the visitors, lots of photos, the penguins and albatrosses are very cute. We walked the entire trail until it was easy and then we went to Isla Marta and watched from the boat the sea lions about 50 m away, which make an incredible noise, the island is not very big and has no vegetation. The boat rocks a little, so if you can prevent seasickness, it could be interesting.

Better organization for loading the buses. They had a single woman checking in 150 people for 3 different bus tours which took over an hour before the bus even left. Poor reservation system, and cheaper in person than on this site.

Ten of us booked this tour during a port visit by cruise ship on January 5, 2023. Four of us were early and they put us in an earlier tour. The other six arrived 45 minutes before their tour time and were told that their tour was cancelled due to rough weather.
We left only 30 minutes before this and had no rough weather at all; in fact it was a beautiful day and every tour boat was at the island. So our six friends were left with no tour after pre-paying a month or more in advance. No excuse for lying to people.
Do not trust this company, their word is not to be trusted!

On the days that there is a cruise we have 2 departures, that day the second departure was cancelled, because the Maritime Authority did not allow the second departure, I am sorry that your 6 friends have had their navigation canceled, but I tell you that it does not go through us.

we (I estimate around 50-60 people) were summoned for 6:30 AM, but nothing happened until around 7:00, when we were told that the trip to pengiuns was cancelled by the naval authorities due to the weather conditions
as alternative we were offered, for the same price and time (i.e. until 12:00) an excursion to see condors (and other Patagonian wild animals, at least according to the announcements on the walls), and we and other 20+ people made the mistake of wasting our money on it
first we waited for another half an hour for a bus (even though they had this trip as a back-up, the bus they prepared was too small for the poor souls who believed in them, so another one needed to be fetched), then we drove for about 2 hours (a good part of which on dirt roads), got some miserable coffee and access to one of the dirtiest and stinkiest toilets I have ever seen, and went to see the condors
there they offered us binoculars, and the driver and local guide asked a tourist to translate into English the few words they had to say (the excursion should have an English speaking guide, by the way), and then we went to a place near a hill to see the condors
the condors are majestic birds, but, even with binoculars, they looked rather like flies, and there were only 1-2, maybe 3 in the air, and after staying there for 10 minutes or so we were asked to leave (when the condors suddenly decided to fly, all 7 of them!)
so, pay for this trip only if you have money to waste, because a correct price would have been maybe USD $30 per person, not USD $105 they charged
of course, they need to survive somehow when the weather doesn't play along, but nobody forces them to live here, after all Chile has lots of different places with a nicer climate where one can make an honest living without ripping off tourists
and there is also the issue of the starting time: who doesn't love to wake up at 5:30 during vacation in order to be at 6:30 sharp at the agency, only to learn around 7:00 that the excursion to the penguins has been cancelled? the agency has our phone numbers, they could have informed us by whatsapp about the weather conditions, and, moreover, if they get the info only around 7:00, then call us there at 7:00, because we are on vacation!

The trip itself was great. I was thrilled to see the penquins and I have no complaint. My issue is that I booked a trip via Swoop Patagonia, and I was charged $255 instead of the price of $103 online. It was by accident I found out how much Swoop was charging me (in general their pricing is not transparent anyways! )When I inquired. Solo Expedition said that it was for someone picking me up /dropping me off the hotel (4 blocks to the outfit) and it was early in the morning. How can they justify charging $150 for a 5 minute ride (RT to hotel )when the penquin trip itself costs $103. I find the outfit unethical and price gouging. I am disappointed that Swoop did not negotiate well with the vendor and did not warn me of a choice of booking it myself and saving $150.

This half a day excursion of Magdalena and Marta islands was one of the best tours that my family of 4 had while in Punta Arenas. One needs to get early in the morning to the office of Solo Expediciones, which is conveniently located close to the main square of the town. Departure was on time in a bus loaded with passengers. The bus which took the passengers to and fro was very comfortable. The guide on the boat was very knowledgeable, interactive and friendly. Luckily the sea was calm during our tour and do the boat journey was comfortable. When on Magdalena island, we got about an hour to walk around, to see the penguins up close in their natural habitat. Saw several penguins including a few baby penguins. Viewing the sea lions in their natural habitat on Marta island from our boat at a distance was also enjoyable. We returned back at the office of Solo Expediciones at the expected time. Overall it was a memorable experience. I would certainly very highly recommended this tour to any traveler in Punta Arenas and especially those who are fond of watching wild life.
