- Introduction to Cambodian Cuisine
- In Khmer “Niam Bay” is the word for eating but the real meaning is “eating rice” showing how important rice is in Cambodia. Almost every meal is eaten with a bowl of rice. A big variety of rice seeds are grown and displayed at the local markets.
- Cambodian food is a over thousand-year-old tradition and has expanded its variety thanks to the influence of its neighbors. The steaming method and noodles have been brought by China whereas the curries come from India. And the delicious baguettes are a legacy of the French.
- The two rivers of Cambodia – the Tonle Sap and the Mekong – provide abundant fresh fish. Fish prickled in wine, salt fish, dried and smoked fish are also widely available to provide essential proteins all year around.
- Coconut milk is the main ingredient of many Khmer curries and desserts. Cambodian cuisine also widely uses fish sauce in soups and stir-fries cuisine.
- Cambodian dishes have a unique and distinctive taste rather mild compared to neighbors Vietnam and Thailand.
- Essential Khmer Ingredients

- Sunshine7900690 contributionsGreat service for private transfer to Phnom Penh airportWe booked the private tranfer for the family group of 6 private transfer from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. I was looking for something reliable to make sure to get on time for our departure flight and this company met my expectations and was a very good experience. Well recommended if you ever need a drive between the two places - it’s really worth doing to see more of Cambodian landscape too.Written November 7, 2024
- D69BUnatalieh0 contributionsWonderful peaceful day on the lake watching daily life. What we loved about this trip was it was a less touristed village so you got a glimpse of actual life: children taking boats to/from school, young boys practicing boat racing for an upcoming festival. In the town center listened as locals participated in recycling education and later heard chanting. On the water we passed boats that were gathered on the water to sell their fish and finally just sitting on the boat in the lake talking with our guide, Nak, who was very happy to teach us about his culture and was open to our many questions. Lunch at the home stay was delicious and filling. It was a wonderful opportunity to see inside a stilted home and after lunch enjoyed a brief rest in the hammocks and watched the world go by while soaking in the perfect weather.Written November 7, 2024

- Mark D0 contributionsPhnom Penh TourI took a tour of the Killing Fields and several locations around Phnom Penh, and it was an incredibly impactful experience. Our tour guide, Oung Syphat, was outstanding—he explained everything thoroughly and clearly, making the history and significance of each site really resonate. The tour ran from around 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with multiple stops. The guide highlighted important details as we traveled between sites, adding so much to the experience. I’d highly recommend this tour, especially the private option, as it allows for a much more personalized experience with ample opportunity to ask questions. Overall, it was a well-executed tour that I’d recommend to anyone interested in learning more about this vital part of history.Written November 6, 2024
- amandajZ6346BP0 contributionsTerrific Tonle Sap! Ask for Nak!!!!!From start to finish Nak , our tour guide, was both professional and friendly giving us much information throughout our tour. It was a humbling experience seeing how the lovely, hospitable Cambodian people live and work! Seeing the bustling life in one of the stilt villages was something we will remember for a longtime especially the smiley school children , the sights , smells and sounds of the food market and the tranquilty of our canoe journey through the ' mangroves ' !Written November 5, 2024
- F7159EAamye0 contributionsAnother great experience from Green EraOur guide Mr. Nak and driver Mr. Pheap were prompt and courteous. Our Tonle Sap tour was affected by late season rains but they worked hard to find other interesting sights along the way and gave us insights into the local way of life. Mr. Nak spoke excellent English and also provided translation for conversation with the local boat driver. It was another great experience from Green Era.Written November 4, 2024

- samanthagT1251OY0 contributionsSeamless experienceWe decided to take a car rather than a plane from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh so we could see the countryside and not have to deal with yet another airport on our trip. It didn’t disappoint!! The car was well appointed and very comfortable, in particular the recliner leather seats. You couldn’t get this on a plane! Our driver was friendly, hospitable and practiced safe driving. A pleasant way to get from A to B.Written November 3, 2024

They prepared our passes for Angkor Wat, delivered them to our hotel beforehand, and picked us up promptly that morning. The guide and driver, Sath and Mr. Kompong, were friendly, knowledgeable, and accomodating. They spoke excellent English, we learned a lot, and we had a fantastic time.
