What to expect
  • Tiwanaku is a ceremonial center constructed about 1,000 years ago. Not much is known about the pre-inca civilization but Tiwanaku is the greatest archeological pre- inca site in all South America and if you want to learn more about this culture, this is definitely the place to go. See the treasures in the museums in form of gold, ceramic and silver pieces and experience the mystic of the monoliths and volcanic stone- structures in the architectural site. The duration of this is approximately 8-hour starting at 8:30am with a pick up from your hotel and returning you back at 4pm. Once we pick you up, we'll drive for 2-hour approx. Our first stop will be a visit tot he Museums, then the Temple of Kalasasaya, the Gateway of the Sun and finally Akapana Pyramids and Monoliths. Please note that the weather in La Paz is very unpredictable, therefore we recommend you to prepare for a sunny day as well as a cold one. Bring sunscreen and warm clothes.

Good archeological site

Good place to go with a guide that has an understanding of the museums and the 2 sites. Interesting to learn about pre-Ican people in that area of the world.

Tiwanaku ruins with not much structure left
Kind of pathetic that the Tiwanaku ancient site has not much ruins left for viewing. The tour travelled about 4 hours from La Paz with one hour viewing. Hence, the effort vs what we see really disappointing. But nothing the tour can do as reconstruction effort is slow and difficult without proper guidance. I think this historical site was perished due to the past Inca, Spanish and locals not appreciating ancient sites and caused majority of the damage and missing stones and structures as per our tour guide. We can’t compare Tiwanaku with Machu Picchu which was found at later stage and not subject to destruction. Also due to its ancient period vs Inca period.

A less than enjoyable experience
Apr 2018 • Couples
We did this tour on April 9th. We have now been in South America for about seven weeks and this was the worst tour of many that we have done. We were the only people on the tour that spoke only English. On the bus to the site the tour guide chatted to all the Spanish speakers and this made us feel very left out. She offered no translation to us.

When we reached the site we said to her that we thought we must be on the wrong tour. She said that we were not and that this was a bilingual tour.

When giving explanations at the site the Spanish rendition was much longer than the English and when questions were asked in Spanish no English translation was forthcoming and the guide's English left a lot to be desired.

We chose this tour as our hotel was on a very steep hill and we wanted a hotel pickup and drop-off as my friend uses a walking stick and this was specified in the itinerary. When we arrived back in La Paz the guide said that the driver couldn't drop us back at the hotel as the traffic was too bad. We were turned out of the bus at the top of a very steep hill and told to make our own way to the hotel.

We would NOT recommend this tour.
