About
We will shuttle 30 minutes outside Antigua through the town of Parramos and the small village of Chirijuyu to meet our trailhead. From there we begin an introductory climb followed by a 3km jeep track descent through coffee and avocado plantations. We will ride smooth trails through agricultural operations and then cross the rustic town of San Andres Itzapa. From there we will start our second climb (4km) up through the town on paved and cobble stoned roads before entering a pine forest at 1900m (6,400ft). Crossing a small ravine
will bring us to a smooth descent and fast singletrack through pine trees. This will exit into the plains of Parramos crossing fields of corn, fruit, beans and greenhouses as you wind along agricultural singletrack. The final descent follows 500+ year old trails that have been eroded into tunnels of tight twisty fun. Exit in the town of Pastores and cycle the gradual paved downhill back to Antigua!

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- adrie_enne0 contributionsBeautiful views, fabulous hikeWe had a fabulous tour with Old Town Outfitters of Pacaya volcano. It was a great hike to get us warmed up for the overnight Acatenango hike the following day. The scenery is gorgeous and we really enjoyed learning about different plants along the way. The guides are so friendly and knowledgeable and took great care of us. We loved the unique experience of roasting (steaming) marshmallows in a dried lava field and having lunch with a fabulous view. Highly recommend this tour and Old Town Outfitters for any other tours you’re interested in! They’re excellent.Written September 13, 2024
- bharatm123450 contributionsMust recommend trek - Acatenango overnight with old town fitters! One of the best tours I ever had was the overnight tour trek to acatenango volcano! Old townfitters were really good. Bini is very knowledgeable and made great meal at the base camp! Highly highly recommend them over other operators that charge less but also provide a very mediocre experience. What I also loved is they respect nature and ensured we’d didn’t pollute with plastic bottles and stuff. So total respect. They are premium and rightfully are amazing!Written July 10, 2024
- 213aydint0 contributionsGreat experience thanks to Rudy!Had an amazing time doing the Acatenango Volcano overnight stay and even hiked over to Fuego as well. The whole trip was well organized and Rudy (our guide) made the biggest difference — he was friendly, thoughtful, and fun to hang out with. He also prepared delicious meals for us! We got to see some amazing views of Fuego from the base camp. The tents for the stay were spacious and the pads and sleeping bags provided were extremely comfortable. Would highly recommend doing this trek with Old Town Outfitters!Written May 27, 2024
- S6482LFjeffreyc0 contributionsAmazing experience! What an amazing experience! My partner and I did the Lake Atitlán Kayak & Hike Day Trip with Vini, who was an amazing guide! He was super friendly, fun, positive, knowledgeable, professional, and accommodating. Honestly, he was possibly the best tour guide I have ever had. And T=the activities we did with him were super fun and physically challenging (in a good way) for occasional hikers like us. Antonio, the driver, was also great. Overall, I would absolutely recommend going on an adventure via Old Town Outfitters (and ask for Vini)!!Written May 25, 2024
- Luis R0 contributionsAcatenango Volcano overnight experienceExcellent visit to the Acatenanco Volcano (stay overnight). This is an excellent activity that involves walking through beatiful Guatemala landscapes. Our guide was excellent and did a great job not only in the preparation of the activity itself, transportation, cooking, guiding, telling us interesting volcanos facts, etc, but also to take us to the summit in a safe way. I strongly recommend Old Town Outfitters. Personnel is very friendly, reliable and helpful. I did not have enough clothes for the trip, and they kindly provided me at no extra charge a jacket and gloves. Making this trip enjoying such nice landsacpes and enviroment, is a life-time experience. Thank You for everything.Written May 21, 2024
- trevorbona0 contributionsAmazing Volcano Fuego/Acatenango overnight campThe most memorable 2 nights of our 3 week tour through Central America! Diana our guide was incredible from start to finish. She was knowledgeable, friendly, and so very helpful throughout our stay! Magical experience that included a sunrise and sunset hike, wonderful accommodations, and really good meals! I would highly recommend this adventure to anybody attempting to witness an active volcano at 3,000 meters! Thank you Old Town, we will surely be back!Written May 11, 2024

- 860hunterr0 contributionsBest volcano tour in the area.Old Town Outfitters was the best tour to book for the Acatenango volcano tour. I booked them as a referral from a few friends that had gone with them earlier this year and it was the best decision for my trip to Guatemala. Their office was extremely easy to work with and having a shop in Antigua really came in handy. I had made a booking error when I originally reserved but their receptionist Tamy was extremely supportive and helpful in making sure I took the right trip. It was also nice being able to purchase some items I missed in packing from them directly. My guide Luis was extremely knowledgable about the volcano and showed us areas that other tour groups weren't privy to. He made great meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and even made sure we had a secluded and scenic area to enjoy our lunch. Other tour groups tend to be 30-60 people and as a group that's capped off at 8 he knew exactly where to take us to avoid these rowdy groups and enjoy the scenery around. He took some of the best photos of me that I'd gotten my entire trip. Last their camp is unmatched. There were few other camps in groups I had talked to that had such a straight on view of the volcano. All of the equipment was grade A and made for a comfortable experience despite camping and going through so much physical activity leading into the night. Book with them you won't regret it.Written April 15, 2024
- JulieBIngraham0 contributionsFamily Trip based in AntiguaOld Town Outfitters planned a week-long vacation with our family of 6 - me, my husband, and our 4 kids ages 11-15. We explored Antigua, took a day-trip to the Mayan ruins at Iximche, toured the towns surrounding Antigua, but the highlight for our family was a hike up Pacaya. OTO took care of transportation and provided us with the best guides - very knowledgeable, very friendly, and part of the family by the end of the week. We made the best family memories, thank you Old Town Outfitters!Written April 9, 2024
- 791michelley0 contributionsGreat hike with bonuses!Christa was amazing as our guide and our entire family enjoyed this hike! Especially our son who didn't hike at all but rode a horse which he thought was the greatest. We got to roast marshmallows using the heat from the volcano and volcanic rock enclosures which was really cool and Christa made us a fabulous picnic to enjoy before descending back down!Written April 8, 2024
- RyanM33050 contributionsEasy to work with, reasonable price and no stressI first booked with Old Town in 2014 for a trip to Tikal which was spectacular. I decided to go through them again for a tailored tour of Lake Atitlan (not listed on the offerings). The van arrived 5 minutes early and the rest of the day was pretty magical. We had Diana as the guide for part of the group that went to San Juan de la Laguna, and Josias for the others that did kayaking and hiking. Each couldn’t have been better - both guides were very attentive to adjusting the pace if needed and helping translate. They explained each important aspect along the respective tours, from the names of native plants to the history behind landmarks to the art of hand weaving clothing and tapestries. After ironing out details of the tour (which again they customized), all we had to do was make sure we showed up ready to go; the rest was taken care ofWritten April 5, 2024
- Aven W0 contributionsWe had a great time!Chris and the team at Old Town helped me plan a Guatemala trip to remember! My son and I did an overnight volcano tour. It was amazing! Watching Fuego volcano explode was one of the most magical things I’ve ever seen. Our guide was very knowledgeable, friendly, and lots of fun to be around. He also took great care of us in camp. The meals he made and snacks he provided were all delicious! Chris and old town also arranged for us to go to Tikal and see the ruins. OTO took care of airfare, tour guides, and transfers. A spectacular way to end our time in Guatemala. I highly recommend OTO!Written March 20, 2024
- 570tinal0 contributionsOkayI did the Acatenango overnight hike with Old Town. It was good and nothing was wrong but my tent was not great and the food was not great. Old Town cost a lot more then others so I thought it would be better. I also booked an English speaking guide and my guide was LOVELY but did not speak English very well.Written March 5, 2024
- andrea s0 contributionsCompany not recommendedMy husband and I did a three day bike, hike and kayak tour. It was supposed to be private but two people were added a week before the trip began. No reduced cost to us. We booked 4 months previous. Itinerary was not at all as described. Easy Mtn biking was going to be no Mtn biking at all or expert level. The couple who joined especially wanted Mtn biking so we did expert trail. Guide fell and broke ribs. Best hotel on Lake Atitlan, Casa del Mundo had been the intended place but no more room with the added couple so changed to second rate hotel. We were informed the night before we left that the included shuttle transport from Antigua hotel to airport for 10:30 am flight would no longer be 5:00 am departure ( 5 hrs to allow for horrendous traffic) but at 3:00 am. We were told needed to be because of traffic but learned it was because chauffeur had another job after drop off. Sebastian, the Outfitter’s contact person, had been helpful with booking but after that unreliable, incorrect information and not helpful. He was the one planning this ridiculous time for shuttle and would not find an alternative. We set up taxi on our own at 5:00 and arrived at 8:00. I do not recommend using this company.Written February 26, 2024
- lalaland520 contributionsGreat way to experience PacayaTour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about the landscape and volcano. It was nice to be in a small group of only 4 people. Would definitely recommend! -1 star because one of the other participants in the group was quite slow and they probably should have encouraged her to use a horse so that we wouldn't be late getting back to town. However this isn't completely the tour guides fault and hopefully when you go you'll have better luck!!Written February 11, 2024

Will is a good guide, i enjoyed his company. The bike provided was too small. With the seat raised to the max, it was too low by a couple inches and this wasn’t discovered till we were at the ride start. I assumed providing my height on the registration form would get me a bike of sufficient size to adjust the seat to the proper height.
Also, the difficulty is underrated. I can’t imagine a beginner handling the technical sections of the ride. The physical demands are also probably well beyond a beginner. The climbs would be too long and hard for a beginner because of the altitude starting at 5,000 feet and gaining about 1,000 more.

What a great morning. We drove about 30 minutes out of Antigua into the hills. David was a great guide. He helped set my bike up. I brought my own pedals. It was As much a tour as a great ride. Lots of single track downhill with stops to learn about the culture, agriculture, we even stopped at a church to see the blend of Mayan religion and the Catholic religion. We ended the ride through Antigua. I highly recommend this trip and old town.
