About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- SethJ990 contributionsPollo bus sin pollosWe thoroughly enjoyed our time with Esteban! He was very informative and taught us a lot about Antigua within the first 20 minutes of the tour. He was passionate about his hometown and pround (and rightfully so) of Guatemala and its people. We never felt rushed and were able to see several nearby Indigenous communities. It's definitely worth the money, but we're still looking for the provided "snacks" and the chickens/turkeys on the buses :)Written March 18, 2025
- Monika G0 contributionsChicken bus rocks!Roberto was kind, funny and knowledgeable. It was great seeing the various villages and hearing his stories. He drove a mean chicken bus!Written February 24, 2025
- dvf8210 contributionsStreet food tour- needs more foods! My tour isn’t on this list, it was the street food tour. I have done many food tours in the past and this one missed the mark. The guide was really nice and luckily we were with another fun couple but the food was not abundant or very good. The food tour was $55 USD and I still went to dinner after! No pepian, no Kak Ik. It was fun to go to the market but should have went with a different food tour.Written February 24, 2025
- LouiseMO5030 contributionsIncredible Trip!Columbus Guatemala Travel Was excellent!!!! My daughter and I had JJ as a guide last year, we came off a cruise ship for the day. This was an incredible trip where we got to meet my daughters biological siblings for the first time who all live in Guatemala. JJ picked us up at the port, arranged a place for lunch with my daughters siblings, translated for us for hours, guided us around Antigua…. Took us back to port. JJ was incredibly helpful to us and was with us non-stop! I can’t say enough how great JJ was and highly recommend this company! Sorry it took so long to send this review. Thank you SO much JJ! You were great and will never forget our experience with you! Diane & EsaWritten February 18, 2025
- SunDestin5170 contributionsAwesome experience, tour guides could’ve done betterOur tour guide was great. He was very knowledgeable and told us all about Antigua and Guatemala and the volcanoes. But when we started the hike, they went very fast. It is a treacherous hike, I’m in my 50s and couldn’t keep up. There was a guide behind us, but he left. By the time my small group got to the stopping point no one told us what we were doing, we happened to see people eating their box lunches, so we sat and ate ours. We never got our second drink we ordered. So we only had the one bottled water the whole time. I gave three stars because they didn’t gather us and instruct us. We thought we were going to the very top, but that didn’t happen. They also should’ve had guides at the beginning and the end. Maybe if they would’ve given the boxed lunches and drinks at the stopping point and the water off the bus, then everyone would get what they were supposed to. The hike was beautiful though, and I’m glad I went!Written February 2, 2025
- jennQ1462QV0 contributionsGreat hike with amazing guidesThe guides are absolutely phenomenal. So friendly and informative, and they pack you a great lunch. The hike is quite rigorous, so keep that in mind, but the views are beautiful.Written February 1, 2025
- Explorer255784638030 contributionsWow!You can tell every single detail was well organized for us to enjoy all the time, a/c was good in the minivan, JJ the tour guide very informative, food was fresh (Guacamole off the charts) all the travelers you can see in their faces they’re happy bc of the views from Pacaya active volcano, thank you Columbus for putting all the pieces together for us to have this wonderful experience!Written February 1, 2025
- jmf1820220 contributionsThe best tour company, a fantastic experience from the very first email to our return home. Can’t recommend enough. When we contacted Columbus Guatemala Travel from our home in Massachusetts, we weren’t sure what to expect. This would be our first time returning to Guatemala with our children, now teenagers, whom we adopted from Guatemala as babies. We got more than we could ever have hoped for. The entire team listened to our needs, made recommendations that were spot on, and accommodated every request. They were the most responsive business I’ve ever worked with and their kindness was apparent from the very first communication. The guides became fast friends. Carlos, Esteban, Luis, and JJ were so knowledgeable and ready to share this amazing country with us. In just a week we saw Tikal, Lake Atitlan, and Antigua. We hiked a mountain for sunrise, horsebacked up a volcano, visited churches and markets and ruins, and took in the beauty of the people and the landscape. If you are considering using this business as your guide, don’t hesitate. It will be one of the best decisions you’ll make.Written January 3, 2025
- W4832FQbrianh0 contributionsExcellent 3 hour Street Food and Local Culture TourWe did an Antigua Street Food Tour with JJ at Columbus Guatemala. Fantastic 3 hours! Of course it was fantastic because Antigua is a wonderful place and the food and culture are amazing, but it was made even better with JJ's local knowledge, intelligence, and great attitude! I wish we had more time for more CGT and JJ's tours. Greatly appreciated!Written December 21, 2024
- 855arlenes0 contributionsAwesome tour of Antigua & El ParedónEsteban our tour guide for the week was not only professional, engaging and knowledgeable, but also extremely attentive to all our needs. Our group included 4 middle-aged adults, and 2 young adults/older teenager, of various activity levels. Esteban accommodated all our interests/needs with ease and provided multiple options so that we all had a marvelous time. We also went on several different tours, walking tour of Antigua with street food, Altamira, chicken bus tour & surrounding villages, Pacaya Volcano, and a trip to the black sand beaches of El Paredón on the Pacific coast. It was amazing to experience the different micro-climates. Would definitely go back & highly recommend Columbus Guatemala Travel!Written July 29, 2024
- rebeccamU4533FW0 contributionsWonderful Guatemala trip!I could write an entire paper on this amazing trip, but will try to keep it short. All the employees of this company are wonderful and friendly and made our trip smooth from the beginning to the end! My Spanish is intermediate and my 18 year old daughter and I decided to book with a company to ensure less stress and safety, and this company was definitely the best decision! Catherina worked with us to book our trip and JJ was our driver/tour guide. Both are amazing people. JJ taught us so much about the culture and history of Guatemala, helped me improve my Spanish, and kept the travel experience very smooth. We stayed in 3 different locations: Antigua, Monterrico, and on Lake Atitlan. All three were amazing but if I had to pick, Antigua and Lake Atitlan (Casa del Mundo hotel) were the best. All the activities we did were amazing. I'm waiting for my younger daughter to be old enough to travel internationally, and I'd love to take my entire family back and explore some more!Written July 22, 2024
- brandonr5120 contributionsTour from Antigua to ChichicastenangoWe had JJ as a tour guide and he was amazing! He was incredibly knowledgeable and was excited to share his culture with us. - Sue I0 contributionsDon’t miss the chicken bus tour of villages around Antigua!!We LOVED Esteban!!!!!! He is probably the best guide I have ever had in all my years in Antigua!! His enthusiasm and sincerity in making the tour successful are excellent!! He is so knowledgeable and really enjoys imparting this with his clients!! He went out of his way to make our day one to remember always!!Written April 1, 2024
- MattBilyard910 contributionsVery good tour, top guideThis was a very good tour, made into an absolutely great one by the quality of our guide, JJ - easily one of the best tour guides we can remember on any trip. Antigua itself is lovely but can feel a bit in its own world, so it was really nice to get out and see some of the surroundings. The stops were all interesting and different (for us, the first - weaving - stop was probably the best, closely followed by San Pedro). We learnt a lot from JJ and from the people at the stops. Totally recommend! Of course, it is cool to go in one of the buses... :)Written March 28, 2024

I am a female solo traveler and this company has helped me so much with assisting me with my itinerary that accommodated for my 6 day trip in Guatemala. All of the staff members were very responsive to all my questions and it easy to communicate with Catherine, the one who organized my trip. My trip included: guided historical tour with a very informative guide Esteban, who was amazing. I also went to a chocolate factory, volcano hiking trip, cooking with a local family, and village hopping in Lake Atitlan. Every staff member was helpful and friendly which made me safe as a solo traveler. Staff also spoke English so it helped me as I do not speak Spanish. Overall, it was a positive experience for me that I would recommend to others.

JJ toured us in Antigua and from there we went to Lake Atitlan with him with an excursion via boat to San Juan where we hiked to the view point, took a tuk tuk. He pointed out a delicious coffee shop and we enjoyed the Women’s cooperative. Throughout our journey, he was amazing; was sensitive to the pace we wanted, recommended great places to eat and had tremendous knowledge. He drove us back to guatamela city with a stop in chichi market. When he done us back to the airport, he took us in and explained everything.
The best part of this company was the help Catherina gave me in planning the trip and assisting me when our flight from to Tikal to Guatemala City was over 4 hours late causing us to miss our flight back home to NY. From the moment I said our flight was delayed until after 1am, she helped arrange a hotel, a car and looked into my trip insurance. AMAZING! HIGHLY recommend!

Wow. Esteban is an amazing tour guide and his English is perfect. I really love that he is actually FROM Antigua as well. When others didn't show up, I ended up having a private tour! He tailored the tour to my interests and provided so much detail about Antigua, he is a book of knowledge! We walked the streets and he pointed out many subtle details about the city which I thought was absolutely perfect. We also ended the tour with a complementary beer from one of the establishments, I'm not a beer drinker but it was tasty! He also gave me pointers about his favorite coffee shops and restaurants in Antigua. The tour lasted about 3 1/2 hours. I HIGHLY recommend this tour!

I was lucky enough to be the only tourist on my tour, so I had a personalized experience, but nonetheless I believe it would've been just as good with other guests. Esteban was professional, enthusiastic, and flexible in delivering his wealth of information and tailoring the walk to my pace, questions, and interests. His English was fantastic, and his familiarity with the city is evident by how many locals said hello to him throughout the 3.5 hours. The tour is a great way to see the city and understand it's rich history. I recommend taking the tour on your first day in Antigua so you can have a better awareness of all of the city has to offer with which to personalize and maximize your stay.

Antigua is a very nice place to walk around independently, but it was all the better to explore it with JJ - great guide, great guy! Learnt a load of things about Antigua past and present that we could never have picked up ourselves. As an aside, we also learnt a lot about Guatemala past and present from JJ, who gave us a load of refreshingly honest (I think) thoughts on a whole range of things, good and less good!

Columbus Guatemala is a great Agency, excellent staff. They put together a great trip for me based on my interests.
They were very involved in my everyday day experience and they make sure everything went as planned.
Jose Juan was my first contact from the agency when I first arrived to Guatemala, and it was very helpful, very knowledgeable about the history of his country.
Unforgettable trip.

Wonderful walking tour of Antigua and taste of the street food there. Felix was an incredible tour guide and taught us so much about the history of Antigua and the Mayan people, so the tour was informative as well as delicious! Highly recommend.
