Fantastic once in a lifetime experience

Excellent well-run tour with very professional and kind guides. The food was perfect in both quality and quantity, better than others we saw, and with very nice extras. It was a very hard slog, especially getting to the top, but SO worth it. Don’t hesitate, book it now!

One of the single most amazing things I have ever done

My partner and I climbed achatenago with Balham tours. The hostel we stayed at hooked us up and the price was less than the tangerine option although the 2 company’s share the same view of volcano fuego.
Isaias was our tour guide and he is an absolutely legend. Such a lovely man, he kept us going right to the top and even helped out some other struggling hikers who were lost on their way to the summit on the 2nd day.
We were so lucky. My partner and I were along with Balham tours and 30 people were in the group with tangerine. We were always slightly ahead of their group and it felt like we had the mountain to ourselves. Isaias could not have been more helpful, he cooked us a romantic meal, served us some wine made us a fire, provided breakfast. It was so much more than we could of hoped for. We didn’t pay the special romantic couples tour price and just booked into a group tour, and as luck would have it, no one else was on our tour.
Also... the Balham loo, has a view 😉 the tangerine loo faces the campfire area of the Balham site and provides a lot of entertainment as the tangerine campers all discover to their horror they are sharing a mountain bucket loo with 30 other people.

I would recommend Balham tours to everyone! 9 hours up, 2 hours down. And a life time to enjoy the memory.

Worth every cent!

Loved going with Balam Tours to Acatenango. They had EVERYTHING you needed at the top of the volcano. If you are skeptical if you really need something they are suggesting, take it! My backpack was too small to carry everything and I was able to leave it with them and then take one of theirs that was larger. Our guides, Nelson and Tito, were awesome.

My friend was not able to make it past 20% of the volcano because of a bad knee and one of the guides stayed behind and helped her get down to the bottom. That being said, this hike is TOUGH. Go at the speed you need to and drink your water. I was the last person going down because I was scared of hurting myself and one of the guides stuck with me the whole time. He also saved me from falling a handful of times. Don't feel the need to run down if you don't want to.

It costs 500 quetzales to take a horse up to the base camp. 300 Q to take a bus back to Antigua if you leave early, like my friend did. And I believe it was 200 q to have your backpack carried by someone/have a horse carry it up to base camp.

Bring warm socks, a sweater or two, a scarf, and a rain poncho would be good too! I also found it most helpful to message balam tours through WhatsApp to get a response. Highly recommend!

Great experience, great guide. Hard work but worth it!
Balam picked us up from our hostel (70l bags and all) pretty much on time and drove us to the bottom of Acatenango to prepare for the hike. They ask that you bring around 4l of water each and request that you donate one for cooking when you arrive at base camp. I know some companies supply this for you but to be honest, when you've got 3l of water to carry on your back another one really doesn't feel that much different... They also provide woolly hats, gloves, walking sticks, thick warm coats, a thick blanket, packed lunch and even heavy duty 40-50l bags if after all this added paraphernalia yours becomes inadequate! There is also somewhere to safely store luggage if you don't fancy renting another night in a hostel.

I won't lie, the hike was hard - at lunch after the first 2hrs when it was hot and the terrain at its toughest I honestly wasn't sure if make it and my husband spent the break trying desperately to convince me otherwise. An hour later however, it was the other way round! It got easier for me the higher we went due to the temperature drop; for him altitude sickness became the enemy! Thankfully another of our group happened to have tablets to combat it and we later found out that the balam guys carry some too in case of such a situation.

Our guide was Jhonny (who had way too much enthusiasm and energy for a guy who hikes volcanoes all day every day!) and there was a runner bringing up the rear. Jhonny speaks pretty good English but was more comfortable using one of our group (who spoke great Spanish) as translator for the trickier explanations.

We were a group of around 12 and the hike to base camp took about 5 hrs - by which point we were all exhausted but happy with our achievements - We all struggled at some point but there was always someone else to cheer you along and Jhonny made sure there were enough rest stops for us all to catch up and have a quick break.

Basecamp consisted of a fire & BBQ as well as 2 very sturdy large tents incorporating several campbeds, sleeping bags and an extra blanket each. Don't bother taking pjs as you'll want to be sleeping fully clad. We also got marshmallows to toast and wine as a reward for making it there & the views were amazing. It's hard to describe the feeling of watching an active volcano up close but needless to say, it's worth it.

The hike to the summit for sunrise is around an hour and again, magnificent views. We were provided with head torches and took our extra blankets with us to sit and admire the sight. Then it was back down to base camp for breakfast and a 2 hr run downhill back to civilisation (I don't think you have to run, but we found it easier that way and Jhonny ramped it up to a kind of competition - the guy is fast as lightening!) - Most of us couldn't keep up but we all gave it a damn good try at some point!

Overall, it was an unforgettable experience and one that I'm sure we'll be telling the grandkids in 20yrs time so if you're looking for the adventure of a lifetime, call Balam Tours & "Vamos Chicos Vamos!"
