San Blas Islands are closed due to Coronavirus, we had cancelled all our tours until Mid November. We are not sure how you have been able to book, we will check that flaw. Your full reimbursement has been done. Thanks

ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO DO (but know what you’re getting into)
Mar 2020
Like the articles say, you HAVE to go to the San Blas. So you get that already so you’re now reading about tour options and tour “operators.” If you’re like me you’ll be trying to save money so you research a number of sites and descriptions. Most seem similar but not exactly the same and the pricing varies right? Yep, that’s just how it is. The tour companies set it up, but ultimately local guides and drivers are your “hosts” for the day. I would just pick a cheaper option with a company that has decent reviews.

Full transparency, I went with “San Blas Adventures” but it could’ve been this one so I’m leaving the review here too. The whole experience was well...exactly that...an experience. From the morning pick up, the 2+ hour drive to the islands, the boat trip, etc - it was all an adventure, BUT ONE YOU SHOULD DO :)

So, this is not for the feint of heart or those excepting a 5-star resort treatment. These islands are NOT developed and that’s the point...to get away! Embrace that and you’ll be fine.

The drive to the islands is quite the treat. You’ll be picked up sometime between 5:30-6 and meet a random dude. He’ll get your bag loaded and then you’re off getting the others. At that hour everyone is pretty quiet, and probably wondering if similar thoughts - well this is not super organized.

You do let you shop about an hour into the drive. You have around 20 min to get your items for the day and then you’re back. My driver didn’t speak a lot of English, but he knew and spoke Spanish so we did some short conversations throughout the drive. If you don’t speak Spanish, you might feel a bit more disorganized.

The second part of the drive is AS DESCRIBED. See other reviews for detailed descriptions, but be prepared. IF YOU ARE CAR SICK, take Dramamine or whatever works for you. I was fine, but I was in the front seat. I found it more like a roller coaster ride than a car ride so that made it fun.

There is some confusion at the “port” - be prepared, who you go to the islands with ay not be the people in your car (different tours). But listen listen and follow what they tell you and you’ll be off quickly.

The boat ride...IS ROUGH - just read the other detailed reviews. FRONT OR BACK? That is a question. The back is arguably the better option as you don’t have the pounding and bumps like the middle/front, but there is a risk in the back....depending on how the wind is blowing, you will get more spray.

Lunch is pretty basis, the reviews are right. However, it’s as listed. Fish, Rice. Salad. None were that great. But that’ not why you’re paying...you’re paying for the islands.

SO ENJOY THE ISLANDS! Take that part in and love it. It is truly special. Take in the silence, serenity, and fact you’re in paradise. Relax, walk around, snorkel, SUP, it’s your choice. My favorite thing though was playing volleyball with the local guides at our last island. I guarantee the locals play every day (when they have the ~2 hours to wait). How often they play with tourists? I don’t know, but if you ask I’m thinking they’ll say yes to mix it up. Me and one other guy from my group played with them and it was GREAT! They are talented and it was competitive (and a work out!).

Same story on your return boat ride, port re routing of people, drive etc. All in all, it’s an exhausting day but so freaking cool.

Long review, but hope it helps set the stage. BOTTOM LINE TO ME - do this 1-day trip no matter what!

Yes, Book this Experience!!
San Blas was a Blast!! From the adventure filled, scenic ride through the mountains of the Gunas Nation (be prepared for the many potholes along the way), to the really fun speedboat ride hopscotching across the Caribbean from one stunning island to the next, not to mention the amazing natural pool; I couldn’t imagine a better way to spend a day on our Panamá Vacation.

Our driver Julio made the day even better, with his knowledge of the region, he shared points of interest both in Panama and the Gunas Reservation/Nation. He was also helpful as a translator for us throughout the day. Thank you for a fantastic day!!

Great Adventure
Feb 2020 • Couples
Beautiful Islands with soft white sand and warm waters - but getting there is quite an adventure. If you like wild rides, you’ll love this. After an hour on the highway, we spent the next 90 minutes riding on a winding road filled with potholes through the rainforest on a 4x4. Finally we reached the water. From there it is a 40 minute ride on a small boat, bucking 5-foot waves. We got totally soaked on the boat ride. The islands themselves are beautiful, with time for swimming, snorkeling or just relaxing on the beach. One of the 4 islands is a sand bar, with water knee-deep and starfish. Lunch was great - local fish, plantains, rice. Some of the local kids also performed traditional dances for us. If you have time, there are also overnight excursions - staying in cabins on the islands.

A great day at San Blas
They pick you up from hotel around 5:20AM and drop off at 7PM depending on traffic. Please be patient as your driver maybe a spanish speaker. It's ok as they provide safe transportation to the boats. Once on the boat they hop around 3 islands. Fruit snacks and lunch is included. I had a great time and will book with the company again. They do their job well. No mosquito on the islands. Keep your passport as it is mandatory for entry. Wear swim wear as you will get wet.

Beautiful islands
Feb 2020 • Couples
Overall we enjoyed this day. The drive up is a few hours and the roads have lots of potholes. We enjoyed the stop to take a break from the roads. Our tour guide was great and we loved the education. We also enjoyed the islands not being packed with people and had time to just relax and take in the beauty.

Tourless in SAN Blas
Feb 2020 • Couples
Pick up at our hotel was right on time and our driver very attentive and professional. It took 5 hours by car and boat before we reached the first island, Dog Island, where we were served 2 small slices of watermelon and 2 pieces of pineapple. Our guide’s English was very poor and we barely understood half of what he said. The first hour by car was not comfortable, but paled by comparison to the second part of the car ride on the world’s worst road! We were offered 1 hour on Dog Island + a ride to Pelican Island at extra cost or 2 hours on Dog Island, which was already crowded with other visitors and blaring music on the beach. Snorkeling was poor as many of us were swimming around an old sunken ship to catch a glimpse of a clown fish. The boat picked up the group of 20 people and took us to a lovely pool site in the middle of the ocean. That was very cool, despite the other four boats with 20 people each as well... finally, at about 1:30 PM, we arrived at our second island for lunch. Cafeteria style over cooked fish or dried out chicken were accompanied by rice that had been cooked hours ago and a handful of iceberg lettuce. Thank God, a single and solitary beverage was finally offered. After some 45 minutes on a beautiful beach, the indigenous dances began. These were disorganized and disappointing. Again, our guide spoke at length in “English “, but we only understood about half of what was said. Back to shore at about 4:30 and in Panamá City by 7:30 PM where we rushed to get a drink of water!

Dear client, Please remember you are traveling to an indigenous community. All food is prepared by them and that is what they eat everyday, the idea of the trip is also to inmerse in their culture and way of life, we cannot bring a Top Chef food for the islands because it will not be fare and legitime. Same with the language, we work to support the local people from the communities and they made an effort everyday to improve their English, but remember they dont have all opportunities as in developed countries and our team make their best to serve you. The traditional dance is new initiative exclusive of our agency, we have encourge young people of the most susceptible communites to dance, they are still learning how to present a show in public, remember they dance for them during their ceremonies and finally they agreed now to show a little about their traditions with the travelers, this has been already a big step. The people there lives from tourism, and this is why sometimes they extend their hand for tips, not to bother you but the majority are really poor. We understand San blas is not a destination for everyone, but for the people willing to open their eyes. Thanks!

Islands gorgeous, Snorkelling better than expected. Personnel all very professional and friendly.

It's a very long road trip. Border wait is weird, unnecessarily long, may be better if you do not go on weekend. Road up and down mountain bad. Also had a long wait getting there on Transamerica highway, apparently they were looking for a mass murderer.

Sun Blas island
Feb 2020 • Couples
In general we liked the trip, Very friendly people and did their best. But there is a potential for improvement. For example: we were ready for the long and bumpy ride, but did not expect to sit squished for 5 h ( 2.5 h each way ) , 7 people (including driver) in one car. Although the driver did a very good job driving through potholes. Would be nice to have a functional toilet on arrival.
The company should make some efforts to make that long ride more comfortable. It’s not 30’ but 5 hs in 1 day. The Islands are beautiful. We are grateful for this nice opportunity to explore them.
