Overview
Immerse yourself in the culture of the Emberá, one of Panama's indigenous groups, during this 8-hour tour from Panama City. Interact with some members of the tribe and learn what their daily life is like in the rainforest. Ride through Lake Alajuela to the tribe's village aboard a 'piragua', a traditional canoe, passing a spectacular waterfall on the way. See some traditional dances, take a trail walk through the forest and purchase some traditional crafts as souvenirs. Upon departure, receive a traditional shamanic blessing for good travels. Lunch, national park fees and round-trip transportation from Panama City hotels are included.
What to Expect
We will come to pick you up at your hotel around 8:00 AM and drive for about an hour to a boat ramp on the shore of Lake Alajuela, part of the Panama Canal watershed, where the Emberá meet us with their dugout canoe. Then we head across the lake  and then upriver for about 45 minutes or so (depending on the level of the river).  Along the way you have the option to stop by a beautiful waterfall (based on natural conditions and accessibility) where you can take a refreshing dip in the cool water. Upon arrival in the village you receive a traditional greeting of music and all the villagers welcoming you to their community.  After about 10 minutes to wander around and explore the village on your own, you are given a short presentation about the Emberá culture and traditions and their crafts.  After lunch you can take an optional short hike in the jungle with one of the village elders to learn about medicinal plants. You are given more free time to wander around, purchase any of their exquisite crafts or receive a temporary tattoo or have a conversation with the Emberá people. Finally the villagers perform some of their traditional shamanic and celebratory dances and music before we climb back in the dugout and head back down river and return to Panama City. This is a group tour, there may be others joining you for this unforgettable experience with the Emberá.

If you believe this is the real deal, guess what.. it's not! To truly see the Embera Village people in their natural habitat, you must travel a great distance. Do your research! This was an exploitation of the people of the village for the Princess...More

Great, authentic experience

We thoroughly enjoyed this day trip. We were picked up at our B and B in Gamboa and traveled by van, with another family, for about an hour. Then we were met by Embera boatmen in a dugout canoe. Traveled another 45 minutes through lake...More

Do this tour if you're visiting the Emberà

Everything about this day was fantastic. Jorgé is a wonderful guide, the trip in the dugout canoe up the river and across a lake was amazing, and the day with the Emberà was life-changing. There is something magical about this place, and this outing...I can't...More
